The discussion covers diversification, portfolio volatility, and why private investments can help reduce exposure to market swings driven by geopolitical events and investor sentiment. Dr. Lim and Josh explore the risks and realities of private equity investing, including liquidity constraints, due diligence, and concentration risk. They also detail the importance of working with experienced fiduciary advisors. Josh explains the differences between public and private markets, why top private equity funds can outperform traditional markets over time, and how investors should evaluate opportunities carefully. The big sell is on. Prime Minister Mark Carney's government has promised to raise $500-billion dollars of private investment over the next five years to reposition Canada as an important player in international business. The goal is to capture billions in foreign investments by selling, in Carney's words, “what the world wants” – energy, critical minerals and an educated workforce. And a government-led summit this year to bring wealthy investors to Canadian soil will be the site of their biggest sales pitches yet. James Bradshaw, The Globe's Institutional Investing reporter, explains why Canada craves foreign investment, how those funds could help the economy and whether Carney and other Canadian leaders can woo billions in business. This week, I sat down with Mathieu Elshout to explore the journey that took him from environmental sciences into institutional real estate investing, and how he is now helping build the European property platform for one of Australia's fastest growing pension funds. Mathieu is Head of European Property at Aware Super UK. Before joining Aware Super, he spent more than a decade at PGGM managing European real estate investments through the Global Financial Crisis and subsequent recovery, and later worked at Patrizia where he helped develop the firm's sustainability and impact investing strategy. In this conversation, Mathieu shares how his early career began in environmental consultancy before gradually transitioning into the real estate sector. That background continues to shape the way he thinks about real assets today, particularly the growing importance of sustainability, long term value creation and the role real estate plays in the wider economy. We discuss his time at PGGM and the experience of managing institutional real estate portfolios during the Global Financial Crisis. Mathieu explains how those years shaped his perspective on leverage, liquidity and market cycles, and why some of the most valuable lessons in investing are learned during periods of stress. The conversation also explores his move to Patrizia and the development of its impact investing strategy. Mathieu explains how sustainability evolved from a niche topic into a core investment consideration, and why institutional investors increasingly see environmental and social outcomes as aligned with long term financial performance. Finally, we discuss Aware Super's growing presence in Europe and how the Australian superannuation model is creating some of the largest and most influential pools of capital in global real estate. Mathieu explains how the fund is building its European portfolio through partnerships and platforms including investments in UK residential, Spanish rental housing and hospitality, and why alignment with operating partners is critical when deploying long term capital. Key Topics Covered in This Episode ✅ From Environmental Science to Real Estate Mathieu's path from sustainability consultancy into institutional property investing. ✅ Lessons from the Global Financial Crisis What managing real estate portfolios through a market downturn teaches investors. ✅ Sustainability and Impact Investing How ESG and impact strategies became central to institutional real estate investing. ✅ Building Aware Super's European Platform Why the Australian pension fund model is expanding rapidly into global real estate. ✅ Investing Through Partnerships Why alignment with operating partners is essential for long term capital. We discuss how government regulation (and attitude to risk) can hamstring investment opportunities and what can be done to avert this. Ian explains Tontine Trust's potential to disrupt the annuity market by offering income for life with better returns. Ian also stressed the importance of networking, mentorship, and entrepreneurial spirit, advocating for a cultural shift in the UK to foster innovation and risk-taking.Series 5 of 2025 is kindly sponsored by Diamond Hill. On this episode of the FEG Insight Bridge Podcast, CIO Greg Dowling welcomes Max Belmont, Portfolio Manager and Senior Research Analyst at First Eagle Investments. Max discusses the growing interest in gold amid global economic uncertainties, exploring its role as a potential hedge against inflation and currency devaluation. The discussion also covers the dynamics of gold mining investments, the impact of central bank policies, and the comparison between gold and digital assets like Bitcoin.Tune in for key insights on the enduring allure of gold and exploration of its strategic importance in today's investment landscape.Key TakeawaysGold is prized as a potential safe haven due to its stability and limited supply. Unlike other commodities, gold does not corrode or degrade, maintaining its value over long periods. This makes it a potential hedge against economic instability and currency devaluation. The historical context of gold, including its role during periods of hyperinflation and economic turmoil, has influenced its perception as a stable investment. Central banks have shifted from being net sellers to net buyers of gold, especially after the 2008 financial crisis and recent geopolitical tensions, such as the Russia-Ukraine conflict. While both gold and cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin are seen as alternatives to traditional financial assets, they behave differently. Gold is a "risk-off" asset, providing stability during market downturns, whereas Bitcoin is more volatile and behaves like a "risk-on" asset, similar to growth stocks.First Eagle's approach to investing in gold includes holding physical gold and investing in gold mining companies. The investment strategy focuses on valuation, resilience, duration, and optionality to ensure a margin of safety and long-term value. You can find every episode of FEG Insight Bridge podcasts in one place and sign up to receive our other publications here.
