NASH-TAG 2023 proved to be a watershed moment for Fatty Liver disease as exciting drug development readouts, powerful academic work on non-invasive tests and the willingness to dive into the toughest questions aligned in Deer Valley, Utah. In this weekend's conversation series, Surfing NASH reviews its diverse coverage of the conference by showcasing key excerpts across six recordings with various KOLs, patient advocates and stakeholders. This conversation features our patient advocate discussion with NASH kNOWledge founder, Tony Villiotti, and Fatty Liver Alliance Founder and CEO, Michael Betel. Tony and Michael begin by describing the high levels of enthusiasm that began at AASLD and carried through to NASH-TAG as it became clear that there are drug trials appearing to meet all criteria for approval. Louise Campbell extends this sentiment further, commenting that new medications combined with greater awareness of the breadth of integrated metabolic disease is leading to a surge in collaboration with other specialists. Specifically, she refers to the involvement of cardiology and endocrinology specialists as a “game changer.” Mike shifts focus to the idea that patients with diabetes and/or obesity might be taking GLP-1s or dual glucagon agents for those diseases. He points out that should new NASH drugs be approved, this might lead to de facto combination therapy. Louise suggests reasons why this might be a double-edged sword. The remainder of the episode focuses on things we do not know about the drugs – how they interact, how long they will work and what downsides may be. Louise offers a final thought which emphasizes the importance of providing professional and patient education and training to make sure the new medicines are used properly.

Dual certified SLP-BCBAs are rare in our therapist community, so many providers find it very difficult when collaborating with other professionals who overlap the scope of care. I am discussing a great professional article that tackles this hot topic with my former supervisee and fellow SLP and BCBA, Eleyonzettah E. Bonilla. The article, Interprofessional Collaborative Practice Between Behavior Analysts, and Speech-Language Pathologists, is available on ABAI.For many SLPs or BCABs, it is difficult to see when other people are doing what you are trained to do. It can often feel like you're being encroached on. This is bound to happen when many times the care requires an overlap. Eleyonzettah and I talk about how crucial it is to embrace this overlap. The article actually discusses the importance of highlighting the strengths of the different providers. When working with two providers who have knowledge about multiple different points of care, you have an advantage.Training can be a great aspect of collaboration. When working with other providers, you can facilitate role extension and role release. While you may not ask another provider to teach a skill from scratch, you can release an extension of practicing a skill by training the other provider on what you need from the learner. We do not own these skills, the skills are there as points for teaching. When facilitating a collaborative relationship, professionalism is key. Eleyonzettah and I both relate to having poor encounters with other professionals. We feel that many other SLP or BCBAs also encounter other professionals they do not care for, this does not mean every encounter has to be negative. It is important to keep language and communication clear and productive. When you're speaking with another provider during collaborative work, the patient should be first. You are a team with the goal of helping the learner.Discussing this secret problem in the ABA community, Eleyonzettah and I kept coming back to a common theme. The child, learner, or patient comes first! Our job is to facilitate learning and quality of life for our learners and collaborating with other professionals can sometimes be the only way to do that!I enjoyed this discussion with Elenyonzettah greatly and it is my hope that you found some tips or beneficial information in today's episode that you can put into practice right away! What's Inside:SLP and BCBA Collaboration. How to work with people from different fields and expertise.Translating research into everyday practice.Putting the child or learner at the forefront of the work.

Want to learn more about Kaiser Permanente's highly competitive tuition-free and lecture-free medical school program? [Show summary] Dr. Willies-Jacobo describes the foundational values that are woven into the culture at Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine which accepted its first class in the midst of the pandemic. She also shares the challenges and adaptations that have come as a result of establishing a new program during the tumultuous past year.  KP Tyson: A unique medical school with a dedication to social equity and an emphasis on small group learning [Show notes] Our guest today is Dr. Lindia Willies-Jacobo, Senior Associate Dean for Admissions and Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity at the Kaiser Permanente Bernard J. Tyson School of Medicine, which welcomed its first class in the summer of 2020 and in the midst of the pandemic. While the Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine may be new, Dr. Willies-Jacobo is not at all new to the field of Med School Admissions.  She earned her MD at UCSD and served as a professor of pediatrics from 1992-2019. For 22 of those years, she was also the Assistant Dean for Diversity and Community Partnerships and Director of the program in Medical Education, Health, and Equity. Can you give us an overview of the Kaiser Medical School curriculum, focusing on the more distinctive elements? [1:55] Absolutely, happy to do that. We just welcomed our inaugural class a year ago, last July, in the midst of a pandemic. We certainly did not anticipate that, but I think in terms of some unique features of the school, I think perhaps the most distinct one would be that we are a non-lecture based school. So we perhaps are, if not one of the only ones, the only school whereby all of our learning takes place in small groups of eight. Because we welcomed 50 students, there is one group of 10 students. So it is non-lecture-based, problem-based learning. It's all integrated. As prospective students may have read, we've decided not to go with the sort of typical departments as there are at many schools. But instead, we have three pillars, our Department of Biomedical Science, our Department of Clinical Science, and our Department of Health System Science. So all learning is integrated across all three pillars. The other couple of distinct features about our school is that we were really built on kind of the foundational principles of equity, inclusion and diversity, which means that it is fully baked into the fabric of the school. We also are teaching anatomy in somewhat of a future facing forward thinking way. We are not using, the students will not be or have not been, dissecting cadavers, but instead we're leveraging technology so that anatomy is being taught by way of augmented and virtual reality. And then I'll just close by saying that our school has curricularized well-being. So we have a pretty significant and robust well-being curriculum. It's called REACH, which stands for Reflection, Education, Assessment, Coaching, and Health and Wellbeing. So every medical student is actually paired with a physician coach, who is helping them along their journey in terms of developing their professional identity. So those are a couple distinct areas.  In preparing for the call, I saw the three pillars. I also saw that there are four threads woven throughout the curriculum. According to the website, they were Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity; Health Promotion; Interprofessional Collaboration; and Leadership. Can you kind of unpack that? And I know you said that the three pillars are throughout the four years, how do the threads and the pillars come together? [4:20] What we have done – and they really are threads, meaning that it is threaded across all four years – it's also threaded across our three pillars that we've just described. So the equity, inclusion, and diversity thread, for example, that's where students come together in somewhat of a didactic seminar, style,

Today we are talking all about the DNP “Clinical” Hours.Welcome to the DNP Project Podcast where we share tips, inspiration, and more! Exactly what are the DNP “Clinical” Hours? Are they like regular see patients kind of hours? Are they spent shadowing? Is it the time you spend doing your DNP Project? -- We need some clarity! In previous episodes we have talked about the fact that the DNP is a degree, it is not a role. However, this degree is based on the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) DNP Essentials. At the time of this writing, the DNP Essentials are being revised. We anticipated release in early 2020, but also as of this writing we predict the COVID-19 Pandemic will impact or at best delay their publication (just my speculation). But these essential skills are the things we think that all practice-focused, doctorally prepared nurses should be able to do, regardless of their role. So that idea requires at least 1,000 hours to ensure competency. Work hours do not count. The hours have to be part of a supervised academic program, otherwise we can't be sure that what you are doing relates to the larger goal. The three main, larger goals:Hours spent to teaching you a new, “advanced-practice” nursing roleLACE ModelLots of confusion on the term “advanced-practice”Most traditional idea, time spent learning patient-care / leadership rolesHours spent ensuring that you achieve competency of the DNP EssentialsI. Now more than ever, it is important for Certified Athletic Trainers to promote wellness and injury/illness risk abatement in our communities. This is a powerful way to showcase our expertise in a way that educates, outside of the normal "setting" we are typically seen in.  Doing so increases brand awareness of our profession, our employer, and ourselves and helps to showcase the value you bring as an AT. A key way to do this is via interprofessional PR collaboration on media platforms such as social media videos, podcasts, radio interviews, and tv interviews.  This throwback episode serves as a thought-provoking example of how Steven Weintraub, DO and I collaborated for the RWJBarnabas Health "RWJ Health Talk" show.  This audio was taken from our January 2018 TV interview (media is property of www.rwjbh.org). Steven Weintraub, DO: Dr. Weintraub is a board-certified physician specializing in sports medicine.
