Get 50% off your Brain Map at Peak Brain with code ANGELA at www.peakbraininstitute.com In the first of a two-part conversation, Angela talks to Dr Andrew Hill, a brain mapping expert, to explore the intricacies of brain mapping and its implications for optimising mental performance and overall well-being. They discuss the science behind brain waves, the importance of sleep quality, and how various lifestyle factors, such as diet and exercise timing, can influence cognitive function. Andrew shares insights on the significance of deep sleep, the role of nutrition in brain health, and the effectiveness of sleep trackers, while debunking common myths about circadian rhythms and light exposure. KEY TAKEAWAYS Brain mapping involves measuring the brain's resting resources using EEG to analyse brainwave patterns. It helps identify tendencies related to attention, stress, sleep, and cognitive processing, rather than specific thoughts or feelings. Quality of sleep is crucial for cognitive function and overall health. Poor sleep can lead to issues like memory difficulties and cognitive decline, but improvements in sleep quality can lead to quick recovery in brain function. Eating patterns significantly influence circadian rhythms. Fasting before bed and timing meals appropriately can enhance sleep quality and metabolic health. Morning activity in a fasted state is also beneficial for regulating circadian rhythms. While sleep trackers can provide insights into sleep duration and patterns, they may not accurately measure the quality of deep sleep or REM sleep. Self-reporting on sleep quality can be just as effective as using these devices. BEST MOMENTS "Brain mapping is measuring the patterns, the resting resources in your brain... it's mostly picking up how you tend to be. The resources in terms of their general way of being." "If you have a habit of eating before bed, you're going to chronically be under-rested because you're not getting into deep sleep." "I think humans are ultimately quite adaptable... people that think they're night owls are people that have dysregulated circadian rhythms." "The most sophisticated sleep trackers are no more accurate than self-report after a month of self-report." Today, Dr. Andrew Hill from Peak Brain Institute discusses brain mapping and the services offered at Peak Brain Institute. "At Peak Brain, we like to think of ourselves as a gym for the brain, helping individuals overcome cognitive challenges and reach their peak performance goals. Our training protocols include Quantitative EEG "brain mapping" assessments, neurofeedback training, heart rate variability biofeedback, and mindfulness meditation. We have a team of EEG technicians and mindfulness facilitators who work with clients as their personal brain coaches. Our brain mapping assessments, also known as Quantitative EEG, provide a detailed understanding of an individual's brain function and activity. This information is then used to create a personalized training plan for each client, utilizing neurofeedback, biofeedback, and mindfulness practices. We offer alternative interventions for a variety of cognitive and mental health issues, including focus, attention, creativity, traumatic stress, mood, sleep, migraines, hyperactivity, rumination, impulsivity, perseveration, seizures, alcohol recovery, test preparation, concussions, and traumatic brain injuries. We believe that by understanding the unique functioning of an individual's brain, we can provide targeted and effective interventions to improve cognitive and mental health. Dr. Andrew Hill is a cognitive neuroscientist and the founder of Peak Brain Institute, which provides brain mapping and neurofeedback services specifically designed to reduce stress, improve focus, and enhance performance. Four years ago, I sought Andrew's advice on recovering from concussions, and recently I took part in an at-home brain mapping session which allowed me to compare my current data with my earlier results. So, in this episode, we talk about training the brain, and Andrew explains the effects of caffeine and intensive early morning exercise on mental focus and performance. Support the show

Can you train your brain to improve your sleep, better your health, and possibly abolish your tolerance for alcohol, drugs, or other things you might be struggling with? According to today's guest, Dr. Andrew Hill, peak performance coach and the founding director of Peak Brain Institute, one of the most insidious things about brain and mind-stuff is that we feel like things are not going to change, and that is just not true. The brain shift happens – it's not a question of if, but how. Peak Brain Institute is a gym for your brain. It is a brain optimization company across life stages for some people. Neuroscientists help people take control of their own neuroscience the same way your favorite personal trainer at your gym helps you learn how to move through transformation goals. Also known as brain training, most forms of neurofeedback are a passive form of operant conditioning, but in an involuntary form. It's essentially taking something you're not usually aware of. For instance, they're raising information from the brain waves or blood flow up to a level where the brain can interact with it. Dr. Hill emphasizes the use of the brain, not the mind. Hence, it's different from the classic biofeedback techniques such as the use of relaxation therapy. Neurofeedback is an option for you to help with your brain, and studies show its positive impact on people dealing with issues pertaining to anxiety, stress, alcohol use, and drug use. On this episode, Dr. Hill talks about what's going on and what's happening in the brain as this process is unfolding so you can gain a better understanding of your brain, what makes up who you are, and how you can change or improve that. In this episode, you will hear: Biofeedback versus neurofeedback How your brain is trained to achieve your goals How brain mapping works The differences in results with eyes closed versus eyes opened The impact of brain training on physical fitness How neurofeedback impacts people with alcohol and substance issues Key Quotes: [04:46] "Neurofeedback is biofeedback, or a form of control, shaping, or exercise of stuff in your brain.” [04:55] - "All neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback, but not all forms of biofeedback are done in the brain." [07:53] - “It's mostly involuntary because you can't feel your beta waves or your theta waves. But after about three or four sessions, you get this lingering effect that tends to show up for a couple of hours to about a day. It tends to impact the resources you have trained like your sleep, stress, and attention, and you get noticeable changes." [10:00] - "Your brain is mostly an electrical and mechanical machine... and the resources of your brain are roughly the same." [11:35] - "There are some things that emerge in the EEG that are almost diagnostic, or that are at least useful." [21:41] - "Other brains with similar complaints and similar goals don't respond the same way when you start doing neurofeedback. And so, you have to be very aware of the actual person's experience." [32:08] - "If you do a few weeks of neurofeedback, you abolish the tolerance for cannabis." [39:21] "One of the most insidious things about brain and mind-stuff is that we feel like things are not going to change, and that is just not true. The brain shift happens... It's not a question of if, it's how." If you really enjoyed this episode, we've created a PDF that has all of the key information for you from the episode. Not so good at sinking into the sweet spot, where the arousal level, the creativity level, the focus level, and the activation level are all dialed in perfectly and you have control over a present set of resources. Because that requires internal maintenance in some way, you have to keep yourself in a zone, in a mode. The issues with flicker and color temperature in commercial light bulbs. Incandescent is a solution if they’re under 100 watts (otherwise, there can be stress-inducing flickers). Waveform Lighting offer full spectrum bulbs. BLUblox Lumi Sleep+ bulbs are great for slipping into a relaxed mood at night Wear blue-light-blocking glasses when the sun goes down. BLUblox, Ra Optics have some fashion-forward options 10:58 —Jonathan asks: what are your best natural remedies for symptomatic pain relief? Start with your diet! Remove inflammatory foods such as grains, lectins, and sugar. Take ice baths every day. I just had my Morozko Forge installed, which is fantastic because you can set the temperature, the water is self-cleaned with O-zone, and it has zero EMF. For supplements, the best thing is Kratom from superspeciosa.com and super clean. I just take 2-3 capsules if I’m in pain. It’s potentially addictive (although I’ve never found it to be the case). I’ve done a lot of research on this and have interviewed many world experts, and I don’t believe you can make it at home. Dry fasting and Keto can help your body deplete deuterium levels over time. The best way to decrease deuterium is with drinking water like Litewater. A monthly subscription is $300 but it’s worth it. Live Spring Water in LA, if you’re out there. Most retail is completely toxic - non-stick Teflon is the worst! Stainless steel is a marketing lie, with most made from aluminum and nickel - both of which are very toxic. I love the natural and organic feel of Xtrema ceramic cookware. All glass kettle for boiling water. Today Dr. Andrew Hill from Peak Brain LA joined us to talk about all aspects of brain health. He deals with all manner of neurological dysfunctions in some very unique ways. Here are some of the brain issues he deals with, focus, attention, creativity, traumatic stress, mood, sleep, migraines, hyperactivity, rumination, impulsivity, perseveration, seizures, alcohol recovery, test preparation, concussions, and traumatic brain injuries. Here are some of the unique tools and protocols he uses to reverse some of these issues Quantitative EEG "brain mapping" assessments, neurofeedback training, heart rate variability biofeedback, and mindfulness meditation. In today's talk with Dr. Andrew Hill we discussed addiction and how to deal with addiction. Is it possible to completely reverse somebody's addictive behaviors? Dr. Hill says yes. We also discussed the impact of sports and concussions. Did you know there have been studies where high school football players are already showing signs of traumatic brain injuries? It's pretty scary. We also discussed the role of games, websites like Luminocity and playing games like chess and bingo can help the brain. Dr. Hill says that these games don't necessarily help which was quite interesting. If you are having any kind of brain issues, Peak Brain LA is the place to visit. Thanks for listening. bengreenfieldfitness.com/peakbrainpodcast Special Announcement: In the beginning of this episode, I describe how I got COVID and what I did about it. Enjoy! Back in 2017, I visited the Peak Brain Institute in Los Angeles, California for a special type of advanced brain scan and brain mapping system called a quantified electroencephalography, or “QEEG”, and I was shocked at what they discovered in my brain. Dr. Andrew Hill, my guest on today's show, oversaw the entire mapping protocol. Dr. Hill, a UCLA trained cognitive neuroscientist, lecturer, discovered what he described as some pretty severe patterns of excess stressful beta waves, excess theta waves, and excess delta waves in my brain. What's that mean, exactly? Basically, it suggests that I had some history of concussions and traumatic brain injury (which I indeed have had, in everything from football to mountain biking to kickboxing), as well as built-up deficits of attention, increased distractibility, limited sleep potential and less-than-optimal cognitive performance from life, travel, toxins, head injuries and beyond. Two months after the scan, I hopped on a plane back to LA, and ventured back into the Peak Brain Institute for three days of intensive training to fix my brain, returning to Spokane with a briefcase packed with a laptop, electrodes, conducting gel, and everything I needed to use neurofeedback to fix my brain. The next three months I trained for 30 minutes every other day using a style of neurofeedback I can best describe as “meditation on steroids”. Mostly, my protocol involved flying a spaceship with my mind. Each time my brain subconsciously shifted into brainwave patterns considered to be unfavorable, the spaceship would stop flying and the music generated by the neurofeedback software would fade away, very much like a cognitive “slap on the wrist”. So how exactly does neurofeedback work? Technically, it’s a non-invasive form of what is known in the medical industry as “central nervous system biofeedback”. It trains the brain to develop new resources by encouraging certain areas to raise or lower the amplitude and ratios of particular brainwaves. To a very large extent, and unlike peripheral biofeedback such as practicing a physical exercise like a handstand, neurofeedback is an entirely non-voluntary process in which you are shaping the brain giving the brain feedback only when it’s doing certain things. Professional clinicians report that about 90% of users notice a significant positive impact from this style of training, and it can be used for everything from decreasing anxiety and stress to inducing faster sleep onset to even resetting tolerance to marijuana and alcohol. Neurofeedback training simply involves the placement of electrodes on the scalp, which produces a signal then picked up by an EEG amplifier. These signals are fed into software that then sends back to the user some form of visual and/or auditory “feedback” or reward. This reward stimulus is given when the brain produces desired brainwave changes in amplitude or frequency. Unlike many books and magazines would have you to believe, this type of protocol is slightly risky, and not just something you download a free neurofeedback app to do. Neurofeedback is a powerful tool and every brain is different, so the single most crucial aspect of neurofeedback training is selecting the proper protocol. Although the QEEG provides crucial information about one person’s brain, the training plan itself needs to be adaptive and iterative, based upon how someone responds to the training, which is why it's important to have the entire testing and training process overseen by a neurofeedback practitioner. Heck, when I did my three months of training with the Peak Brain Institute, Dr. Hill and I were text and email buddies nearly every day. Neurofeedback can produce side effects, although they are generally minor and short lasting – and also informative to a neurofeedback practitioner. If you get adverse effects, protocols can be adjusted to steer the brain in a different direction. But if you are training yourself with no supervision and no sense of what’s actually happening in your brain, you can easily produce negative side effects and if you keep doing it you can cause these negative effects to become permanent. So proceed with caution, but with the understanding that neurofeedback is one of the more powerful pieces of headgear that can be used to enhance or change your brain. During our discussion, you'll discover: -A brief overview of the Peak Brain Institute...8:36 -Why a home device isn't enough for optimal brain performance...11:18 -How close we are to a "god cap" that can track brain waves without gel, electrodes, etc...25:35 -How the Peak Brain Institute tracks individual's brain waves virtually...35:45 -How diet affects a person's neurofeedback...42:40 -Nootropics or smart drugs that promote neurofeedback...1:01:45

Any tips on staying grounded spiritually during this ridiculous time? I’m a new mom and I find myself worrying about different things that could happen to my daughter as a result of whatever the heck is going on right now (i.e. forced vaccinations, lack of human connection, a masked society, etc) Limit doom porn exposure, especially the news, whether that’s mainstream or alternative. Meditate. I like to use the Joe Dispenza meditation tracks. NuCalm BrainTap Apollo Stress Relief Wearable Device The Rasha Kundalini yoga: RA MA TV, Nine Treasures Yoga Breathwork - Wim Hof Method Mobile App Get outdoors, get sun, especially at dusk and dawn. Avoid blue light at night to keep your neurotransmitters balanced. Focus on gut health for the same reason. Make quality sleep a top priority. Use the ChiliPad or OOLER and track your sleep with the Oura Ring. 22:38 — Samantha asks: Hello smart people. I’ve been diagnosed with long term Lyme and am looking for ways or products to help me detox without ingesting supplements (already doing that). Any suggestions? Thanks! Use energy medicine: The AmpCoil - I talk about this in episodes 98 and 173. If you can’t afford one, find a practitioner or healer in your area. Dr. Rashid Buttar’s clinic in North Carolina Dr. Frank Shallenberger in Reno, Nevada The Rasha in Reno or find a practitioner who uses one 30:46 — Carly asks: Luke referenced eye drops that he used to help his vision when he was having problems with it and I can’t recall what they were. Does anyone know? I’m in need! I was doing some peptide drops from Russia but I found something way better! I fill up an eyedropper with Quinton sea mineral solution. The isotonic version, NOT the hypertonic. This seawater solution is collected from plankton blooms deep in the ocean and purified. It has all the trace elements and minerals essential to all life on earth. Future podcast guest Robert Slovak taught me this trick. He’s a water genius, and we do a deep dive into Quinton minerals. They are also incredible for fertility and many other applications. 38:54 — Erin asks: Does anyone have good info or resources for children with ADD? The most effective natural treatment I’m aware of is neurofeedback. I’ve done a lot of this at Peak Brain Institute in west LA, and you can learn about it on episode 30 with Dr. Andrew Hill. Peak Brain does remote training, and there are other practitioners all over the world. This modality has been a huge part of my brain healing, including a week-long training I did at 40 Years of Zen, Dave Asprey’s clinic. Neurofeedback is a non-invasive way to retrain your brain to manage brainwaves. You teach your brain to behave the way you want it. Great for PTSD, ADD, ADHD, focus, memory, high performance, and more. 43:05 — Penelope asks: I had a B12 shot at the pharmacy yesterday and usually I feel great after. I feel like they gave me the flu shot instead. The receipt says b12 but this feels really crappy. Has anyone else experienced such a thing? I’ve never had an adverse reaction to injectable nutrients. Bodies are sensitive though, not only to physical molecules but also to energy, and the world is insane at the moment. Could be anything. I wouldn’t blame it on the B12. 45:18 — Maggie asks: Does anyone remember the books Luke often mentions about the concept of "surrender?” The #1 book on surrender is “Letting Go: The Pathway of Surrender” by Dr. David R. Hawkins. It’s about learning how to fully experience all emotions without fighting them. The other is called “The Surrender Experiment” by Michael Singer. Amazing book! It’s more of a life story about how surrendering to everything and anything led him on an incredibly successful life mission. I also did a solo show from a live gig at Aspen Shakti on episode 115, where I talked in great detail about my 24-year journey into deep surrender. 58:32 — Elisa asks: What is the best at-home colon cleanse? I’ve been a fan of Gravity Colonics for 20+ years. They are the most thorough, gentle, and natural. You can get something called a Colema board online at colema.com. There is also a colonic clinic/retreat spot on the big island called Angel Farms, which I went to 20 years ago to detox drugs. It was incredible! Do that, then just do maintenance at home. 01:05:45 — Stefania asks: Hi! I feel like this group may have the guidance I am looking for. I am deciding on an apartment that has power lines running close behind the bedroom windows and balcony area. Is this dangerous/EMF producing? There are three big power lines close to the windows. Your best bet is to have a building biologist test them. Sometimes they’re really bad, other times not so much. You can test the magnetic field yourself with a tri field meter to get an idea. I have some about 20 feet away from my house and they’re not that bad. Take the EMF Masterclass to learn all the tricks. 01:09:41 — Tana asks: Does anyone have natural remedies for ringing in the ear? I wish! Everyone, please let me know if you hear of anything. The only solution I have found is to 100% ignore it. 01:12:53 — Caleb asks: Has anyone here supplemented with shilajit as a mineral supplement? Seems really interesting and I am curious to try it for my mineral supplementation. I’ve been on shilajit for 10 years or so just about every day PristineHydro makes a great powered version Shilajit Powder with Triphala: Shilajit Powder is composed of 84 Organic Plant-Based Minerals, Fulvic, Humic, and Ulmic acids, blended with Triphala, which is one of the most popular herbal remedies in the health food industry that promotes bowel movement. The reason Triphala is added to Shilajit is quite simple since a very common problem for so many individuals is constipation and bowel irregularity. I bought a few kilos of the tar a few years ago from a private source in Siberia, and it lasted me forever. It is said to be a great source of minerals, and even more so fulvic acid. If you want minerals, get some of the Quinton sea mineral solution I mentioned earlier as well. It’s not about how many minerals you eat, but rather what you assimilate. I prefer plant-based minerals over synthetic, but for magnesium, you can’t beat Magnesium Breakthrough, which has 7 different forms. It’s incredible. 01:17:03 — Bret asks: For those of you not on city water, do you prefer well water or rainwater harvesting? for such reasons as drinking, overall health, bathing (skin, hair), etc? This is a huge topic and could be a whole solo show I would have both types of water tested before considering drinking. Rainwater is full of acids and chemtrails. Well water could have any number of metals or other contaminants. For bathing I would say anything is better than city/tap water, but for drinking, this requires a solid strategy. Listen to the 6 hours I did on water starting on episode 129 with Daniel Vitalis. Download the Ultimate Water Guide at lukestorey.com/129 ...or TEXT thewaterguide TO 44222 01:20:41 —Macy asks: Hey gang! Did we ever get to the bottom of a low EMF air purifier? Did a quick group search but looking for some quick clarity. I live in Denver and due to the fires we currently sit at #5 worst air quality in the WORLD! Also, any advice on maintaining good respiratory health is greatly appreciated. The whole household is feeling super blah. Listen to episode 260 where I discuss air filtration. I’ve been working on the air purifier thing for years. It’s so hard to weed through the BS. I have a couple of Austin Air HEPA filters downstairs for big particles. In the bedroom, I only use the Air Doctor which I love! Easy to clean, has an auto mode, and even a blue light button. It filters mold, bacteria, viruses, and more. As for EMF, as long as it doesn’t have Bluetooth or wifi it’s not an issue. I keep mine across the room, way farther than a magnetic or electric field could ever reach. No matter what it is, never keep anything plugged into power near you, especially while sleeping More about this episode. Watch it on YouTube. JOIN MY NEW ONLINE EMF HOME SAFETY MASTERCLASS! Our brains are incredible organs but sometimes we need to give them new programming. That’s what Dr. Andrew Hill does with his patients. He has spent his life and career understanding the brain’s patterns and the best way to help undo the unwanted ones. Using brain mapping along with neurofeedback stimulus, Dr. Hill has helped thousands of people overcome addiction, trauma, and a host of other neurological problems. Everything from experiencing early age trauma to the repercussions of ADHD and OCD has been able to be corrected through his program. First, he completes a thorough history and checkup. Then you go through the process of brain mapping. The brain map itself is not a diagnostic, but when used while asking deeper questions, several brain patterns can be found. The next step is retraining the brain through neurofeedback. Listen in as we chat all about the brain and why you might need or want to look into brain mapping and neurofeedback. Dr. Hill also shares some of his key pointers for getting better sleep. In This Episode: [01:45] What is brain mapping and why should we do it? [04:57] How to interpret the brain scans. [09:06] Learn more about the process of having a brain map done. [13:05] Nothing found necessarily means that there is something wrong with you and brain training can help increase deficits. Today we’re looking at how jacked up my brain is — and how I'm going to fix it. A few weeks ago, I traveled to the Amen Clinic in Orange County to work with Dr. Daniel Amen, one of America’s leading psychiatrists and brain health experts. My visit started with a SPECT scan of my brain, which is an imaging test used to get 3D images of internal organs. Then, we sat down for this interview to talk about my results and what I can do to improve my brain health, as well as what everyone should be doing to maintain cognitive health. I was actually a little shocked and disappointed to learn that my brain has some fairly serious issues with brain flow. But if I’m going to get that news from anyone, at least it was one of the world’s foremost experts, who was able to provide some clear and concise directions for reversing the damage. If you normally listen to the podcast, you might want to watch the video for this episode. We recorded the whole thing, and you’ll very literally get to take a peek inside of my head. 11:55 — What is a SPECT scan? The 3 main things that SPECT results can tell you about your brain Putting the scan into the context of your life 14:00 — The results of my SPECT scan Irlen syndrome, a visual processing issue as a result of traumatic brain injury My brain is good at sustained attention and processing speed, not so good with flexibility or executive function How addiction has affected my brain What a healthy brain looks like vs. an unhealthy brain Programs you can do to activate your cerebellum, such as Zing Performance The benefits of coordination exercises (and why people who play racket sports live longer than everyone else, even table tennis) How Kundalini Yoga affects your brain The long-term effects of trauma on your brain “Brain Envy” How maintaining good brain health as you age can extend your cognitive life 20 to 30 years Can you trick a SPECT scan? It is Neurofeedback and top Performers such as Tony Robbins, Ben Greenfield, Dave Asprey, etc have utilized it. I there got an expert on the field for an interview. And he actually did an image of my brain. Luckily it didn't look that bad :) Andrew Hill is an expert on neurofeedback, he has trained Ben Greenfield’s brain. Andrew is the founder and director of Peak Brain Institute. He's been a lecturer at the University of California UCLA for almost 13 years. And then, of course, he has a Ph.D. in cognitive neuroscience. So I'm really excited to have Andrew here with me today. Find the podcast at www.growthisland.io or in your podcast app under Growth Island “Neurofeedback essentially is operant or instrumental conditioning that is involuntary and produces implicit learning.” – Dr. Andrew Hill FINAL RECOMMENDATIONS FROM ANDREW HILL: You have to rely more on the feeding, more on keeping your sleep habits tight more activity because those things will override a wonky light cue. This week sees Angela in conversation with Dr Andrew Hill, the founder of the Peak Brain Institute, and an expert in Cognitive Neuroscience, attention and neurofeedback. Dr Hill joins Angela today to talk about how to optimise your brain for high performance, how to access different brain wave states, and how to cure conditions such as insomnia, ADHD and PTSD. KEY TAKEAWAYS Taking control of your brain performance is almost like going to a gym. By following a workout routine, you can achieve physical goals. It’s the same with brain performance, and each “workout” is tailored to your optimal goals. ADHD sufferers rely on the environment they’re in to cue which mode their brain is in. In a high stimulus environment, they are generally more focussed than average. This is why they can play video games for hours, but cannot seem to concentrate in a classroom. If you drink alcohol every day, even small amounts, then coming away will leave your brain wanting Gaba, a chemical messenger in the brain that is supplied by drinking. The longer you drink, the more stuck you become in that need. One of the most common misconceptions with alcohol is that a glass of something will help you sleep, when in fact it disrupts the formation of deep sleep, and causes toxins which disrupt sleep. Before age 12, your children will identify with the values and socialisation that you bring them up with. From 13 through to late teens, there is a common dis-identification from parents and a rededication with peer. This is usually the phase in which the child will rebel, or seek to establish an identity separate from the family unit. The biggest driver we have for circadian rhythm is not light, but when we eat. To keep ourselves in that rhythm, we need to not eat at the end of the day. It’s the most important rule. Don’t eat before you go to bed. Don’t eat as soon as you wake up. Exercise in the morning before you eat. These are the cardinal rules for circadian reinforcements. The best way of losing weight is to sleep at the right time. You can literally sleep yourself thin. Getting the right amount of sleep actually helps you to gain muscle mass. BEST MOMENTS ‘Hire a doctor and they give you answers. Hire a scientist and they give you questions’ ‘You shift through neutral in and out of gears’ ’There are no benefits to alcohol’ ‘People are variable and it’s a complicated formula’ ‘If you’re living with signals that don’t make sense to your brain, then you get depressed and tired' VALUABLE RESOURCES The High Performance Health Podcast – Omny Peak Brain Institute - http://peakbraininstitute.com Dr Andrew Hill Twitter - https://twitter.com/andrewhillphd ABOUT THE GUEST Dr. Hill is one of the top peak performance coaches in the country. Dr. Andrew Hill~ Founder of Peak Brain Institute ~ Current Series ~ 100 Interviews with 100 Major Influencers Do you really know if you have a healthy brain? Most of us would like to think so, but how can we really tell? We know if we have a healthy body, we know if we have healthy habits. So why don't we know if we have healthy brains? One reason why is because society associates unhealthy brains with mental disorders, and if we don't have a mental disorder then our brain must be healthy. Right?....Wrong! We could actually have problems with our brains for years before it shows signs. Brain health is on the cusp of becoming a really big movement and Dr. Andrew Hill is one that helping lead that movement. Andrew is a neuroscientist, entrepreneur, and biohacking advocate. He holds a Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience from UCLA, and is best known as an expert neurofeedback practitioner and brain fitness coach. With an extensive history working in mental health, and as a university lecturer and researcher, Dr. Hill founded Peak Brain Institute in 2015. Peak Brain Institute a community-oriented company whose mission is to expand understanding and accessibility to brain-hacking technologies. Peak Brain Institute and Andrew's main mission is to make more brain gyms, where people can learn about and exercise their brain, without it being a mental issue. On the show today we chat in depth with Andrew about how our brains actually operate. We talk about how scanning brains can prevent many mental disorders, flow-states and the effects of alcohol and drugs on our brains. We also discuss the importance of meditation and how it is really changing brains for the better, and we discuss the many benefits people with healthy brains can get by scanning and continuing to exercise the brain regularly. 02:06 Who is Andrew Hill? 04:55 Sleep Training Across Time Zones 10:16 The Journey to PeakBrain 12:43 Is my Brain Healthy? 14:40 Brain Scanning vs Brain Mapping 21:10 The NeuroFeedback Process 31:08 Can High-Performers Benefit from NeuroFeedback? 35:26 Andrew's Tips on Marketing Automation & Service Delivery 37:56 A Deep Dive Into Brainwaves & Flow-States 51:58 How Meditation Affects the Brain 57:29 Basic Meditation Practice 1:00:24 Effects of Drugs & Alcohol on the Brain 1:06:57 Where to Find PeakBrain Contact Info: http://peakbraininstitute.com/ Social Media: Twitter: @PeakBrainLA Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/PeakBrainInstitute Instagram: @PeakBrainLA YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCtWM4uaH6IXx_HbLRd9ctHg LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/andrewhillucla/ Promo: Listeners that mention this show will receive 10% off services at Peak Brain Institute (excludes equipment purchases)

Even just a few decades ago people thought that the human brain doesn't change after a certain life stage - that you're pre-determined to be a certain way for the rest of your life. Nowadays we know that the brain is actually plastic and it's always changing based on the input it receives. Welcome to the Body Mind Empowerment Podcast I'm your host Siim Land and our guest today is Dr Andrew Hill. Dr Hill is a cognitive neuroscientist, speaker, and founder of the Peak Brain Institute. He’s one of the leading neurofeedback practitioners in the world and he helps people improve their cognitive performance and brain health. There are exercises that make your body strong, and there are exercises that help your brain work better. In this episode, Bottom Line President Sarah Hiner is joined by Dr. Andrew Hill, founding director and lead neurotherapist at Peak Brain Institute, to talk about neurofeedback, which he describes as “exercise and therapy for the brain.” Neurofeedback has been proven to help with mood regulation, improved sleep, increased energy, stress relief and even migraines and seizures. No drugs involved. No dangerous side effects. According to Dr. Hill, the power of neurofeedback and how it retrains the brain eliminates the need for medication that theoretically “fixes” the brain. Neurofeedback has helped thousands learn to be in control of their thoughts, moods and overall effectiveness. Listen in to see how it can benefit you. The stigma surrounding ADHD is false. “It’s not an ailment…it’s a superpower”—says Dr. Andrew Hill, lead neurotherapist at Peak Brain Institute and also an ADHD patient himself. Much of ADHD’s roots may be pathological or genetic, but that doesn’t mean that the proper solution is medications to fix what’s broken. Dr. Hill joins Bottom Line CEO Sarah Hiner to discuss the inverted views of ADHD and how he so successfully manages his own ADHD and treats thousands of patients with education and neural feedback. Other topics explored—strategies to help with ADHD…signs your child has ADHD…and how parents should approach the issue with their kids and doctors. To learn more, visit http://peakbraininstitute.com. Neurofeedback http://learntruehealth.com/neurofeedback/ Neurofeedback: Unlocking The Brain The brain is such a powerful tool yet there are secrets to its power that we have yet to unlock. Hence, my guest, Dr. Andrew Hill is here to teach us how to make our brain function optimally. He will also explain what neurofeedback is all about. How It All Began Dr. Andrew Hill has been involved in clinical work for more than two decades. In college, he worked in a residential facility for developmentally disabled adults. Because these people were primarily non-verbal, Dr. Andrew Hill had to learn different techniques on how to understand them. “The verbal challenge in these individuals was so profound. I had to communicate with people in a very different way,” recalls Dr. Andrew Hill. Incidentally, the state of California and Massachusetts tend to lead the way in progressive health care reform in the United States. This piqued Dr. Andrew Hill’s interest to work with different populations. Dr. Andrew Hill was working in in-patient psychology when he first heard about neurofeedback. He eventually went on to graduate school to learn more about neurofeedback. What is Neurofeedback? According to Dr. Andrew Hill, neurofeedback is a form of Biofeedback in the brain. It was invented about 50 years ago. Neurofeedback was developed through the work of Dr. Joe Kamiya at the University of Chicago in the 1950s. It was eventually followed by Dr. Barry Sterman’s work at UCLA in the 1960s. Primarily, neurofeedback trains the brain to efficiently function. It is also known as EEG Biofeedback based on the EEG or electroencephalogram. The EEG is a test to monitor the electrical activity of the brain. Neurofeedback Through the Years During the 70s, neurofeedback was seen as a formed of spiritual development. It became known as a meditation or spiritual tool. There were conflicts in religious beliefs and limited medical findings at the time. Hence, people were skeptical about neurofeedback. However, because of constant research through the years that followed, neurofeedback was eventually used to treat patients with ADHD, psychological, and central nervous system disorders. It can also be used for treating stress and other emotional conditions. Dr. Andrew Hill, in fact, worked at the Neurodevelopment Center in Providence Island years ago, before opening his practice. The center specialized in addressing autistic spectrum disorders. “I witnessed autism symptoms getting reduced. Traits like obsessions, anxiety, over-arousal of things, eye contact, sense of humor and language significantly improved,” Dr. Andrew Hill said. He also said that the limits on real neurofeedback research are therapy. This is because you can’t patent it. Furthermore, it’s hard to get funding for large studies. According to Dr. Andrew Hill, the reason studies need to be large is because each person needs 30 to 50 sessions each. In addition to that, each treatment is tailor-made to the client. Techniques of Neurofeedback Mental Health professionals perform neurofeedback by placing a lot of wires called electrodes to the scalp. This allows them the ability to monitor brainwave activity through a special computer software. Though the software has some limitations, it aids a person into changing brain activity to a recommended level. Consequently, the brain is being molded into operating on a more regulated performance. Peak Brain Institute Dr. Andrew Hill’s Peak Brain Institute offers QEEG brain mapping, wherein every treatment is tailor-made for the client. The length of the program varies, and a qualified Peak Brain neuroscience team ensures follow-up sessions after your program is done. Clients are likewise taught how to monitor their brain activity on their own. But there are a lot of EEG headsets that are unreliable. Hence, Dr. Andrew Hill said it is best to get some assistance with a qualified neuroscience team. “I don’t think the most elaborate neurofeedback approaches are better. It can be misleading and they don’t do the work,” said Dr. Andrew Hill. “Our offices helps patients for first three months. And then we adjust protocols.” Role of Diet and Nutrition Dr. Andrew Hill says people with conditions like ADHD improve within 4 to 5 months of training. However, aside from the treatment, diet, and nutrition plays a significant role in making sure our brain is healthy. “The right diet significantly improves your brain’s health. Consequently, one should minimize sugar and maximize healthy fats,” advises Dr. Andrew Hill. The Best Intervention Many ask if neurofeedback is a cure. It is not. However, there have been numerous success stories attesting to the fact that neurofeedback significantly improved their health condition. In this regard, Dr. Andrew Hill likewise highly recommends people to learn the power of meditation. According to him, meditation is the process of anchoring or learning to stabilize your condition effortlessly. Dr. Andrew Hill believes that people can get good at meditation over time. Ideally, meditating at least 20 minutes for 10 to 15 days in a row can produce significant results. “Adhere to the process of evaluating what’s going on. Be curious, not judgemental,” said Dr. Andrew Hill. “Especially in meditation, you become flexible. Being healthy is not something you do in the gym. It’s what you do in your life.” Dr. Andre Hill is one of the top peak performance coaches in the country. He holds a Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuroscience from UCLA’s Department of Psychology and continues to do research on attention and cognition. Research methodology includes EEG, QEEG, and ERP. He has been practicing neurofeedback since 2003. In addition to founding Peak Brain Institute, Dr. Andrew Hill is host of the Head First Podcast with Dr. Hill. https://bengreenfieldfitness.com/andrewhill Six months ago, I visited the for a special type of advanced brain scan and brain mapping system called a quantified electroencephalography, or “QEEG”… …and I was shocked at what they discovered in my brain. Dr. Andrew Hill, who oversaw the test and who you may remember from my podcasts “” and “” (and who you also may have seen on , the and beyond) discovered some pretty severe patterns of excess stressful beta waves, excess theta waves, and excess delta waves in my brain. What's that mean? Basically, this suggests that I have had some history of concussions and traumatic brain injury (which I indeed have had, in everything from football to mountain biking to kickboxing), as well as built-up deficits of attention, increased distractibility, limited sleep potential and less-than-optimal cognitive performance from life, travel, toxins, head injuries and beyond. Dr. Hill actually explored much of this in a follow-up article he wrote after my scan, entitled "" After that initial scan, I hopped on a plane to LA, and went back to the Peak Brain Institute for three days of intensive training to fix my brain, and then I returned from LA with a tiny suitcase full of every piece of neurofeedback technology necessary to transform and rewire my brain. In today's episode with Dr. Andrew Hill, who is one the leading neurofeedback practitioners and peak brain performance coaches in the country, a UCLA trained cognitive neuroscientist, lecturer, entrepreneur, avid biohacker, and host of the soon-to-be released podcast – Head First With Dr. Hill (stay tuned as one of the first episodes is with yours truly)… ….you're going to discover exactly what happened to my brain over my 4 months of over 60 sessions of neurofeedback training, how this method of brain fixing blows any other form of electrical brain stimulation out of the water, and how I felt while going through what is essentially like “meditation on steroids”. During our discussion, you'll discover: -What Andrew discovered on my initial brain scan...[9:25] -How I was able to engage in neurofeedback while simultaneously watching Shark Tank...[14:10] -The difference between a "one channel" design and "two channel" design when it comes to how much you're asking of your brain...[25:50] -How you can be "doing other things", like typing, and still also at the same time doing neurofeedback and training your brain...[31:00] -One of Andrew's favorite "kitchen sink" neurofeedback protocols for sleeping like a baby, improving mood, and increasing focus...[33:00] -How to use neurofeedback to reset alcohol and marijuana tolerance with just one single session...[42:20] -The shocking results of the second scan that Andrew and I did...[50:15] -And much more! I've long been super suspicious about smart drugs, so I'm going to take some convincing. Is my guest on this podcast the man to prove it? Because today on the Zestology podcast, I interview a guy who's made it his mission to get us into 'peak brain state' more often. Covered on this episode of Zestology Are 'smart drugs' safe? Is there a drug that can make us smarter? How do we get into peak brain state more often? What legal supplements and stacks could we take to improve our brain function? Dr. Andrew Hill runs the Peak Brain Institute, and also leads the team of TruBrain neuroscientists that have put together some interesting and groundbreaking supplement products. They say they have helped CEOs, hedge fund managers, and artists achieve new levels of performance by using advanced neurotech devices to measure their brainwaves data when they were deep in thought, managing stress, juggling distractions, and thinking on their feet. Dr. Andrew Hill is one of the top peak performance coaches in the country. He holds a PhD in Cognitive Neuroscience from UCLA's department of Psychology and continues to do research on attention and cognitive performance. Dr. Hill is the founder of Peak Brain Institute, host of the Head First Podcast with Dr. Hill, Lead Neuroscientist at truBrain, and lectures at UCLA, teaching courses in psychology, neuroscience, and gerontology. I went in to the Peak Brain Institute of Los Angeles to meet with Dr. Andrew Hill having literally no idea what I was getting myself into. I had agreed, in advance, to get what they call a Quantitative EEG “brain mapping” assessment, and then have Dr. Hill go over the results with me live on the podcast. Easy… and fun. I was about to learn about how awesome my brain function was… or so I thought. For the test, they put a web of electrodes over my skull and watched my brain waves for about 20 minutes, after which they made me go through a nauseatingly boring number sequencing test. The only hard part of either was keeping myself from drifting off to sleep. Simple, right? Super fun. Piece of cake. Until hearing the results - live on the podcast. Turns out, I’ve got some brain issues. See that picture below? The one where the map of my brain looks bright red? Those are my Theta waves… and the bright red color indicates I’m 3 or more standard deviations away from normal (which is a lot in statistical talk). YIKES! For the full rundown of what this all means you’ll have to listen in on the podcast. But don’t fear, it’s not all bad. The point of the testing is not just to find out what’s wrong, but to actually do something about it. Dr. Hill said that with regular training, conditions like mine that can affect my sleep, attention span and ability to focus are fully correctable. I’ll be doing at least a month’s worth of brain training to find out just how much of a difference it makes - so look for the follow-up episode! Enjoy!
Is your brain broken? How would you know if it was, considering you would have to use your broken brain to assess your broken brain? And what do I mean when I say ‘broken’ anyway? By broken, I mean that there may very well be parts of your brain that are inactive or contrarily overactive, that are impairing your ability to handle stress, be creative, sleep, solve problems, and function at your peak potential. Thanks to a technology called ‘brain mapping’, we can quite literally see how well our brain is functioning. Once issues are identified, neurofeedback training can then be applied to correct it. Neurofeedback gives you the the ability to ‘read’ your brainwaves, in order to accurately assess your brain's health. This amazing treatment is used to treat everything from PTSD to addictions, and has an impressively high success rate. In this special ‘field recording’ episode, I travel to Peak Brain Institute and interview one of the world's leading experts in Neuroscience, Dr. Andrew Hill. We started the interview by doing a scan of my brain, and during the show our guest shares some pretty disappointing results with me. Thankfully, I also learned that I can probably fix it using a combination of neurofeedback, smart drugs, and proper supplementation. Peak Brain Institute founder and lead neuroscientist Dr. Andrew Hill on brain optimization. We talk about sugar & brain dysfunction, the link between insulin resistance & Alzheimer's (likely a lifestyle disease) and brain waves for focus & attention.
Focus is about the ability to attend at will. And to do so in the presence of distractors. And focus ends up becoming then a balance of continuous resources against transient resources. Transient resources, things where you're being alerted or oriented to new stimulus in the environment and sort of vigilant as a sustained attention piece where you're able to laser like focus and also be flexible enough to pull things out of your mind. Not stay so focused on something in front of you that you can't think. It's actually not just more. Performing better is not simply more attention, more focus, it's about control over these things. – Andrew HillAndrew Hill, PhD. I did this interview with Dr Hill prior to my trip to LA & then was fortunate enough to catch up with him when I was there last year for Dave Asprey’s 2015 Bulletproof conference made a special little visit to his new clinic – the Peak Brain Institute. I was lucky enough to get hooked up with the latest technology (see below). A wireless neurofeedback machine & it read my brain waves…ummmm…not so good!! What long term positive effects can nootropics give to our busy lives? Can new breakthroughs in cognitive neuroscience help us attain the focused state of attention to meet the demands of our busy modern world? Andrew Hill, PhD, is a lecturer, scientist, explorer, and also the lead neuroscientist at TruBrain. Today on the show, Dr. Hill and I discuss everything from frontal lobes to biofeedback, and more. Focused Attention Improving focus and efficiency is the greatest weapon for ambitious people looking to accomplish more. In today’s connected 24/7 world, clocking more hours in the office no longer provides the same unique advantage that it used to. To become more efficient, you first need to understand your equation for productivity. This equation starts with the human brain and how your brainwave states dictate your output. Because we measure brainwaves, we can actually quantify what happens in the brain when someone is in a focused state. Want more focus? The safety of today's nootropics The role of caffeine in your regimen How to make coffee work better for you How Nootropics differ from legal and illegal stimulants How to get better brain performance overall.
