Among all the things Jai Rodriguez knows how to do well, not punching down is at the top of the list . Sharing his journey from going to Broadway to landing a role in the groundbreaking TV series, “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy”, his grit and talent took the stage by storm, playing in shows like “Rent” and “The Producers”. He shares how he got started by going to his first audition at the age of 12 – a funny but inspiring anecdote on why you shouldn't take ‘no' for an answer easily. Jai also recounts his “Queer Eye” audition, the success of the show, and the overwhelming response they received early on. Despite the external glamor, Jai reveals his financial struggles during the press tours. He also gets real as he talks about a pivotal moment in his career during a meeting with agents, and how he was told that he may not be castable due to his identity – an untrue trope that stayed with him throughout a lot of his career. While it may have affected him deeply, Jai did not let it stop him from taking up space in the industry by rephrasing “you can't do it” as “it's just never been done before”. Jai Rodriguez is an actor and musician best known for his role in the original Fab Five 'Culture Vulture' in the award-winning show “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy”. He had his Broadway debut at the age of 18 when he was cast as Angel in the critically-acclaimed musical, “Rent”. His other credits include the long-running musical, “The Producers”, “Zanna, Don't!”, and an off-Broadway hit, “Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man”. He has a web series, “The Horizon”, which is the most-watched LGBTQ web series in the world. You might recognize him as the original 'Culture Vulture' from the groundbreaking show “Queer Eye For The Straight Guy,” but there's so much more to this incredible soul. Meet Jai Rodriguez, a force of creativity and passion who has been shaping American culture for nearly two decades. Jai is most well known for his role as a member of the original Fab Five in Queer Eye For The Straight Guy and we get so many great stories from his time on Queer Eye in this conversation but his journey is rich and beautiful. This is such an inspiring, heart-centered conversation that is sure to fill your emotional cup! Jai's journey began at the young age of 12 when he embraced chance and went to his first audition, followed by performing arts high school. Then at only 18, Jai graced the Broadway stage as 'Angel' in the critically acclaimed musical “RENT.” From there, he took the theater world by storm, appearing in iconic productions like “The Producers” and creating the unforgettable role of ‘Zanna' in the off-Broadway sensation “Zanna, Don't!”. But that's not all - he even headlined a Las Vegas residency with the hit show “Sex Tips For Straight Women From A Gay Man.” Jai shares behind the scenes from many of his theatre adventures in this episode. Set to make his debut at 54/Below on Oct 26-28, for his latest cabaret show “A Thousand Sweet Kisses” which promises an unforgettable performance filled with love, laughter, and personal stories, and it's a little bit naughty in all the right ways. Get your tickets to Jai's show “A Thousand Sweet Kisses” at 54/Below (there is even a virtual option!) and be sure to connect with Jai on Instagram, Threads, TikTok, Website. Make sure to follow this podcast everywhere you find podcasts, leave a rating and a review, and slip into our Instagram DMs at @wasitchance. A precious kid who was always finding a way to perform, Jai was always a theatre kid. 12-year-old Jai took intentional risk and called the first casting director to see if he had been cast in his first show. He was! After attending a performing arts high school, his mother refused to support a performing arts education for college. He snuck into the city to audition for an agent and instantly got signed to play Angel in RENT! You may never be the best at something but it's your uniqueness that sets you apart. Always be yourself and believe in yourself. RENT was Jai's “Waiter gig” in NYC. Jai took a 6-month leave of absence to do Zanna Don't and only making $400 a week (which was a massive pay cut) when he was asked to audition for Queer Eye For The Straight Guy. He was instructed to fabricate his backstory in order to be cast in Queer Eye. They aged him up and gave him a degree! This is the 20th anniversary of the original The Fab Five Jai's approach is to never punch down. Queer Eye was originally intended to be a comedy, no one expected it to be so heart-centered. Jai's show “A Thousand Sweet Kisses” at 54/Below is funny, honest, and racy! Audience members will include Queer Eye cast members and other celebrities. Learn more about your ad choices. “Trail blazers very rarely get to reap the benefits of the very trail they helped blaze.” This conversation with Jai Rodriguez is a perfect conversation when it comes to being a multi-hyphenate. What happens if we get pigeon holed into one thing? Jai had a tough time breaking out of what people thought they knew about him or what he could do after Queer Eye. So how did he lean into the full rounded multi-hyphenate he is now? In this episode we discuss… How he landed the original cast of Queer Eye on Bravo. The multi-hyphenate life he was leading while being a TV star. How he broke out of what people thought they knew about him. Gatekeeping. Understanding the type of life and career you want to exist simulatenously. Avoiding bad professional relationships. Jai's upcoming 54 Below show, A Thousand Sweet Kisses Emmy Award winner and Broadway veteran Jai Rodriguez returns home to the NYC stage after 17 years, with his new cabaret show A Thousand Sweet Kisses, chronicling his hilarious journey through love, sex and relationships. Purchase tickets here. Best known as the “Culture Guy” in the groundbreaking original “Queer Eye,” theater audiences first met Jai at the age of 18 when he played Angel in RENT, making him the youngest person ever cast in a leading role in that show. While in NYC, Jai appeared at Lincoln Center in Spinning Into Butter, as Carmen Ghia in The Producers and as Zanna in the cult classic Zanna, Don't! While performing eight shows a week, Jai became a fixture in nightlife with his popular post modern pop cabaret night at XL called Twisted Cabaret. Since then Jai has become a regular fixture in TV and film guest starring on shows like “Grey's Anatomy,” “The Rookie,” “The Magicians,” “How I Met Your Mother,” “Fantasy Island,” and as the scene stealing Geoffrey in “Malibu Country” opposite Reba and Lily Tomlin to name a few. Most recently Jai was in the Judd Apatow film BROS and is in “Uncoupled,” which is about to shoot its second season. A Thousand Sweet Kisses is a hilarious and touching musical cabaret featuring Broadway and pop classics as well as never before told behind the scenes stories. Thom Filicia steps Behind The Rope. Having just had Jai Rodriquez on the Pod, we figured it was a great time to continue our trip down memory lane from the early days of Bravo and share this epic chat we had with Thom. Queer Eye For the Straight Guy. Bravo Royalty. Thom takes us back to the beginning of how he got cast for Queer Eye by getting stuck in an elevator. Thom talks about the behind the scenes filming, producer involvement, and what he thought about the finished product once the show aired. He talks about how life changed once Queer Eye came out and catapulted him into the public eye. Of course we discuss cast mates Carson Kressley, Jai Rodriguez, Ted Allen and Kyan Douglas. We discuss what Bravo was like in those early days, the evolution of the network, and Andy Cohen. Thom tells us stories from the vault about designing projects for celebrity clients such as JLO. Thom also chats RHOBH, RHONY and more Housewives! Of course, no discussion of Queer Eye would be complete without a nod to the current Netflix series and Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Ness, Karamo Brown, Tan France and Bobby Berk. @thomfilicia @behindvelvetrope @davidyontef BONUS & AD FREE EPISODES Available at - www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope BROUGHT TO YOU BY: IQBAR - TEXT VELVET to 64000 (Get 20% Off All IQBAR Products Plus Free Shipping) ROCKET MONEY - rocketmoney.com/velvetrope (Cancel Unwanted Subscriptions & Manage Expenses The Easy Way) FACTOR - factormeals.com/velvet50 (Use Code VELVET50 To Get 50% Off Your First Box) BRILLIANT EARTH - brilliantearth.com (Check Out All Of Their Beautiful Pieces) ADVERTISING INQUIRIES - Please contact David@advertising-execs.com MERCH Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 Learn more about your ad choices. SoCal audiences have known comedian Jason Stuart for a long time. Popping up at gay events, emceeing Prides, performing stand-up at comedy clubs for gay and straight nights, making jokes on red carpets, stealing the spotlight at house parties, and flirting with boys at the bar is just a normal week for Jason. His comedy is just a part of his wildly colorful career. As an actor, he has over 265 film and TV credits to his name, from playing that funny character that always gets the zingers, to serious and even (gasp!) straight parts in films like The Birth of A Nation, to David E. Kelly's Goliath (starring Billy Bob Thornton). You never know where his signature expressions will pop up next, he is just as home acting for a major studio as he is supporting an LGBTQ web series. His co-star celebrity list reads like Entertainment Weekly's Who's Who with names that include George Clooney, Angelina Jolie, J.K. Simmons, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Angela Lansbury, Damon Wayans, Jai Rodriguez, and on and on…always holding his own.As an openly gay actor, Jason is a trailblazer for the community who, this Pride season, celebrates the 30th anniversary of his coming out publicly on the Geraldo Show declaring to the nation: “I'm gay, deal with it!” Long before even Ellen came out, there was Jason, setting the stage for entertainers to come out publicly, even at the risk of limiting his blossoming career. Recently he has received accolades and rave reviews for Smothered, now in season 2, about a Jewish middle-aged couple trying to salvage their relationship because they can't afford to get divorced. On this episode of US of Gay, we chat with Jason about the gay culture when he was growing up, why he came out on national TV, the evolution of LGBTQ in the media, his stand-up comedy, what he's learned from life, all about his current hit Smothered, finally getting the recognition for his work, and much more! Hosted by Alexander Rodriguez.Check out our in-depth chat with Jason in the Pride issue of GED Magazine, available on newsstands or at GEDMag.com

Queer Eye for The Straight Guy was an instant hit in 2003. Oprah, Jay Leno, even President George W. Bush were talking about the Fab Five. They were promoted as gay superheroes, who came in and made over a straight man’s life – but we never really got to know them. The Netflix reboot, out in 2018, changed all that. Today's Fab Five shares their struggles and opt for “make better” over “makeover.” In his episode, host Mariah Smith talks to OG culture guy Jai Rodriguez, interior design guy Bobby Berk and superfan Tobin Low. We celebrate New Years Day by launching our 1st episode of 2021 with no other than the OG Queer Eye Culture Expert and Actor, Jai Rodriguez! Jai was a delight to share our time with as we dove deep and Jewcy into his background in television, film and Broadway. He was also very open about being of colour working in the "Biz" in an age where this quality was not fairly represented or recognized. Within Queer culture itself the progression has rapidly evolved over the last 20 years in mainstream inclusivity and diversity for all walks of life.We also debunk the processes of pre and post production for Queer Eye on Bravo and Jai talks about how he started his musical theatre career with RENT in NYC and in Canada. He gets candid about his story growing up, through the decades of his life and to current Covid times. Jai's had many plot twists thrown his way. He now has his very own platform and budding community, Jai's World! This episode is full of raw dialog, which we're so thankful to have had with Jai. For someone that gets put on a pedestal in his industry, you'll get to learn about who the real Jai is. We continue to pull the mask off of "celebrity"... one human at a time. **Sound is kinda wonky with Jai until about 23:40... Keep listening! It gets really good!**Jai's LINKS:WebsiteInstagram (@jairodriguez)Twitter (@jairodriguez)Getting Jewcy Links:Watch This Episode on YouTubeInstagram (@getting_jewcy)Facebook (@gettingjewcy)

Emmy winner Jai Rodriguez is no stranger to representing our community from his early days on, a then brand-new network, Bravo TV in Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Jai went on to appear on Broadway (and in the film) in The Producers, in Reba McEntire's Malibu Country for ABC, Lady Gaga's Telephone music video, and Kingdom with Nick Jonas, as well as critically acclaimed guest spots on Nip/Tuck, Bones, and Harry's Law, and a list of hosting gigs for numerous TV projects, including the Dance Moms reunion special. He has appeared on stages across the country with his solo concerts that feature songs from his theatre career, including his time in Broadway's RENT, and stories from his extensive career. We talked with Jai about his most recent role in HBO Max' docuseries Equal – as activist Jose Sarria (aka the Widow Norton), as well as activist fatigue, cancel culture, singing during Quarantine, and our hope for the future. We also heard a very interesting behind the scenes story about Jai's performance in RENT and where Joey Fatone put his fingers...oh myyyyy

Thom Filicia steps Behind The Rope. Queer Eye For the Straight Guy. Bravo Royalty. Let us just take that in for a hot second. Thom takes us back to the beginning of how he got cast for Queer Eye by getting stuck in an elevator. True story. Thom talks about the behind the scenes filming, producer involvement, and what he thought about the finished product once the show aired. He talks about how life changed once Queer Eye came out and catapulted him into the public eye. Of course we discuss cast mates Carson Kressley, Jai Rodriguez, Ted Allen and Kyan Douglas - what they were like back then and the current status of his relationships with each today. We discuss what Bravo was like in those early days, the evolution of the network, and Andy Cohen. We also discuss how Queer Eye helped change the landscape for LGBTQIA representation on television. Thom tells us stories from the vault about designing projects for celebrity clients such as JLO. Speaking of celebrities, we discuss how many want “stuff for free” (cue Bobby Berk and the infamous unnamed RHONY) and discuss how Thom recommends handling business situations such as these. Thom also tells us about that one time he was backstage with Kyle Richards at WWHL where the discussion turned to all things Puppy Gate and Lucy Lucy Apple Juice and the many nights he has had out with his ex-boyfriend’s BFF, Dorinda Medley. Of course, no discussion of Queer Eye would be complete without a nod to the current Netflix series and Antoni Porowski, Jonathan Van Ness, Karamo Brown, Tan France and Bobby Berk. @thomfilicia@behindvelvetrope@davidyontefBonus Episodes Available On Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetropeMerch Available at - https://www.teepublic.com/stores/behind-the-velvet-rope?ref_id=13198 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

JAI RODRIGUEZ joined The Take On to discuss his experience playing Angel in Rent and being on one of the most famous shows EVER, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy….a show that changed Jai’s life, but also showed him the frustrations of being brown man in Hollywood. More about Jai Rodriguez: Jai Rodriguez has lent his voice to various projects in television, film, theater, and music, as well as social issues near and dear to his heart. Jai Rodriguez from the original Queer Eye For The Straight Guy steps Behind The Rope. Bonding over quarantine life, Jai and David share how they have been getting though the past few months during their time at home. Of course, the conversation quickly turns to Bravo and what it was like, in 2003, to be the very first reality show to ever exist on this now very famous network. Jai discusses how he was cast on Bravo’s original reality show, why he almost wasn't cast, and what working with Andy Cohen was really like. Once the show aired, Jai explains how life quickly changed as a result of this ratings blockbuster and the opportunities, or lack thereof, that followed when the show had ended. Those opportunities, in part, included a series regular role on Malibu Country with legends Reba McEntire and Lily Tomlin plus parts of epic television shows such as Grey’s Anatomy, Grace & Frankie and The Rookie, to name a few. Jai discusses the challenges of transitioning from reality TV to scripted roles and how he was able to make that transition successfully. Speaking of Queer Eye, no conversation of the ground breaking series would be complete without a nod to the current Netflix “reboot”. Just in time for Pride month, David & Jai discuss the cultural significance of The Queer Eye Legacy and what is next for Jai in his career. Tune in now to hear all of this plus Jai’s current relationships with both Bravo and Netflix’s Queer Eye casts. @jairodriguez @behindvelvetrope @davidyontefhttps://www.patreon.com/behindthevelvetrope See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Jess welcomes an actor/singer/performer she has admired and loved for nearly twenty years — Jai Rodriguez — well-known as the Culture Guru on the OG Queer Eye on Bravo. Jess fell in love with Jai years prior, when he was starring on Broadway as Angel in RENT and doing cabaret "after shows" singing early JT & Kelly Clarkson. We chat about his experience playing Angel, the HIV+ beloved drag queen before he was even out in his own life, making a name for himself in the NYC nightlife scene to his eventual big break on Queer Eye/Bravo. We also discuss his role in the Gaga/Beyonce video for "Telephone," starring in "Sex Tips" in Vegas and the kooky connection to Scheana Shay & Camille Grammer. Sharon Gless Emmy and Golden Globe winning actress talks with Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ about her reunion with Tyne Daly at the Richmond Ermet Aid Foundation’s Silver Anniversary Gala event “Help Is On The Way 25 Celebrating Broadway” that takes place on Sunday August 18th with a concert and gala that benefits Meals on Wheels of San Francisco and Raphael House at the Herbst Theatre 401 Van Ness Avenue in San Francisco, California. Gless will be reunited with her “Cagney & Lacey” partner Tyne Daly in a reunion performance not to be missed. Also scheduled to appear will be Eileen Bourgade, Carole Cook, Franc D’ambrosio, Sam Harris, Kimberley Locke, Constantine Maroulis, Jai Rodriguez, Del Shores, Lisa Vroman, Bruce Vilanch, Paula West and the cast of the National Touring Company of “Hamilton”. Carole Cook a protégé of Lucille Ball who has starred on stage and screen for over 70 years will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award at Help Is On the Way 25. For over twenty years the Richmond Ermet Aid Foundation has raised millions of dollars by producing Broadway quality entertainment events and galas to advance HIV treatments and support AIDS services until there is a cure. Since 2015 REAF has expanded its fundraising focus to the Bay Area’s growing demand for two new areas by providing food for the needy and programs that support homeless, disadvantaged and disenfranchised youth. We talked to Sharon about this tremendous organization and as a fierce ally her spin on our LGBTQ issues. Sharon Gless has entertained TV viewers worldwide as the iconic characters she has brought to life over the last five decades. However it was her breakout role on the CBS hit TV series Cagney and Lacey that won our hearts as over 30 million viewers each week watched Gless as NYPD detective Christine Cagney in the first hour-long drama to feature two females in the leading roles that ran for six Emmy-winning seasons from 1982 until 1988. Then another generation of viewers fell in love with Sharon’s portrayal of Debbie Novotny the outspoken devoted mom of a gay son and confidant and loyal supporter to his gay friends for all five seasons of Showtime’s daring smash series Queer As Folk. We also talked to Gless about the possibility of a Queer As Folk reunion. The Richmond Ermet Aid Foundation was founded by the late Barbara Richmond and Peggy Ermet in memory of their sons John Richmond and Doug Ermet who both lost their lives to AIDS. In 1995 the two women decided not to get mad but get even when they launched a musical AIDS benefit to honor their sons by raising funds for AIDS service organizations. "Help Is On The Way 25" is Northern California's largest annual benefit concert benefiting HIV/AIDS and hunger programs. It's an elegant evening of wonderful music, delicious food and beverage tastings and most of all fun.For More Info & Tix: reaf-sf.org LISTEN: 500+ LGBTQ Chats @OUTTAKE VOICES

Queer Eye for the Straight Guy star and co-star with Scheana in Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man…Jai Rodriguez joins in on the Scheananigans! He’s talking about his time on Queer Eye, how his career began almost by accident, his one man show, portraying himself authentically and not just who people tell him, and his radio show!
Recorded LIVE at the Hollywood Improv in front of a sold out crowd, we had an amazing lineup of guests, starting off with a Starship Troopers reunion on stage of Casper Van Dien and Ed Neumeier. Next up was Jai Rodriguez, star of Rent on Broadway and Queer Eye For the Straight Guy, with an amazing story about a date he had with a co-star. We then chatted with Milana Vayntraub, best known from her AT&T commercials, and we learned that she is unable to help you with your bill. Jamie Campbell Bower from Twilight and Harry Potter stopped in, and made the controversial statement that between the two, he prefers Twilight. We capped off the night with a Glee-union with Kevin McHale and Jenna Ushkowitz, who played a best friends game so we could see just how well they know each other. This one is jam packed with fun- it's THE NIGHT TIME SHOW!
A discussion with Jai Rodriguez, actor most recently from Fox's The Resident, Grey's Anatomy and also Queer Eye for the Straight guy alum.
Jai Rodriguez ("Queer Eye for the Straight Guy," "The Producers," "RENT") and Kendra Wilkinson ("Kendra on Top," "The Girls Next Door") chat about their new production of the hit off-Broadway play “Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man” coming to the Las Vegas Strip this month. The play is good, clean, naughty, interactive fun, so what's not to like? I talk with Jai and Kendra about the play, what audiences can expect, why gay men and straight women make such great team mates in life, plus with 2017 being the 10th anniversary of the finale of "Queer Eye," I ask Jai his thoughts on the newly announced Netflix reboot of the iconic Emmy Award winning show.
