Some Americans fear the Federal Constitution falls short in addressing democratic threats, yet it's long been revered for its ideals of liberty and equality. Join us at Town Hall Seattle for a discussion with Aziz Rana, Michael Hardt, and Jaleh Mansoor about Rana's book, The Constitutional Bind, exploring how this flawed document gained mythic status and its impact on society. Rana contends this reverence emerged in the 20th century alongside US global dominance, shaping both domestic and foreign policy. Discover how this cultural phenomenon has hindered meaningful change while silencing an array of movement activists — in Black, Indigenous, feminist, labor, and immigrant politics — who struggled to imagine different constitutional horizons. Gain insights into alternative constitutional futures at this thought-provoking event in collaboration with Red May. Aziz Rana is an American legal scholar and author who currently serves as Richard and Lois Cole Professor of Law at Cornell University specializing in American constitutional law. Michael Hardt teaches political theory in the Literature Program at Duke University. He is co-author, with Antonio Negri, of the Empire trilogy and, most recently, Assembly. He is co-director with Sandro Mezzadra of The Social Movements Lab. Jaleh Mansoor is an associate professor of art history at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, where she teaches modern and contemporary art history with an emphasis on Post WWII European art. Jaleh Tavakoli and I went to Israel for a week as part of a delegation of people from across the Middle East invited to join a group called Sharaka. Sharaka means "partnership" in Arabic and the NGO is a partnership between the UAE and Israel that was inspired by the Abraham accords. Their mission is to "Shape a New Middle East- Together".While we were there we visited Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Memorial, as well as the Nova Forest, which holds an Oct 7th memorial. It was the first time for both of us - Jaleh with roots in Iran, and me with roots from Gaza and Israel. We discussed what surprised us, what enraged us, what our favorite and least favorite parts were and so on...Follow Jaleh on X: https://twitter.com/JalehTavakoli

Before you proceed, I want to warn you, that this episode does contain graphic content that some may find disturbing.Vivace is a very bright woman who received her undergraduate and graduate degree in Biology from Cornell University. She worked in the medical field for twelve years before becoming a speaker and life coach. My guest explains that "my mother was my BFF and she lives for her children." This was all terribly hard because Vivace always wanted her mother "to feel valued and honored yet she was at the bottom of everyone's totem pole."Unfortunately, the abuse toward she and her mother started when Vivace was very young and continued until both women left the family, leaving behind the two sons as they chose to remain with their father. Yet, Vivace recalls asking her mother on a regular basis "can we leave today, can we leave today" but it was years before they left. From a young age, Vivace would confront her father verbally about the abuse, but her bravery came with a price. With $100 in their pocket, both women left the horrific beatings behind and found shelter with family members who unfortunately knew of the abuse, but never came to Jaleh's rescue.Through many years of depression, pain, anger, resentment and a planned suicide, Vivace began her healing process through therapy, research and seeking the truth. She uses her past experience as a tool to help her clients improve their self worth and confidence through compassion and understanding. Ultimately, the client has to realize that the possibilities are limitless. “It's positioned as empowering for the consumer to ‘do their research' on ingredient lists, but I actually think it ends up being disempowering. You need an advanced degree in chemistry to keep up with the ingredients, formulas, and latest research. How can we expect the average consumer to do that?” says Jaleh Bisharat, founder of beauty e-retailer NakedPoppy. “And unfortunately there's just not as much independent research as we need. There's a lot of data holes.” In this episode of Clean Beauty School, mindbodygreen beauty director and host Alexandra Engler chats with Bisharat about how machine learning can improve the beauty shopping experience, why the consumer shouldn't need to be “armchair chemists” to shop smarter, and leaving the world a little more beautiful than you found it. Plus, we get into the backlash against the “clean” beauty movement. Jaleh Bisharat co-founded NakedPoppy in her late 50's! She's a marketing powerhouse. A Harvard graduate, she began her career as a consultant, and went on to lead the marketing teams as VP or CMO at Amazon, OpenTable, Upwork and Eventbrite. Jaleh shares her story and ideas on how to become successful by staying positive and having a can-do attitude, even during the most difficult times in life.
There's the not-unfamiliar route of a fine arts education preceding a media career. And then there's Jaleh's path: an MS in digital media turned visual artist who's amassed over 200k followers on TikTok, and 115k+ on Instagram, since she started painting in October 2020 (!).But overnight success narratives are rarely that simple. Or sudden. Jaleh's art is the result and reflection of 10+ years building and serving communities in the nonprofit world, along with creating and advocating for opportunities where none existed. When she was ready to strike out on her own, Jaleh leaned on the media savvy she picked up in undergrad and grad school (and along the way) to share her work and find an audience. And she's continually developing new art-adjacent income streams to complement her painting sales. Susan Taylor, Essence Magazine Editor-in-Chief said in her 1993 book, In the Spirit: "There is a wisdom that is as much a part of our being as our flesh and blood and bones. Intuition, the deepest knowing. It is alive in us as children as simple faith in our feelings. But as we grow up and the outer world begins to matter more, the channel to intuition narrows. Western culture stifles intuition, dismissing what can't be explained logically and scientifically, and discouraging reflection and feeling. It offers no real answers to how life should be lived. But life is more than the physical, biological, and mechanical---more than what we can see and prove. Intuition is a higher form of mind than rational thinking. It's the synthesis of the heart, mind, and soul working to expand awareness and understanding, Intuition is the wisdom of the spirit within us, coaxing us to be fair, to do the right thing to embrace change as a natural and essential part of life. Intuition is the voice within that is forever pressing us to stretch ourselves, to take risks, to keep loving and giving birth to a new self. Trusting the inner voice is a particular struggle for women". Jaleh Moslehi, Chairperson of the Board, for The Center for Improving Women's Lives (CIWL), engages us in an intuitive, inspirational, and educational conversation about how CIWL has become a lighthouse for women embodied in this struggle. Growing up in pre-revolution Iran, Jaleh Misaghi dreams of becoming a race car driver. So strong is the pull of rubber on the road, she glues herself to the TV, watching Formula 1, practicing her moves and yearning for the speed of the track. But after the Iranian revolution, Jaheh's driving quest is shattered – she can't even get her licence. With the regime cracking down and a young daughter to care for, she must decide on a new road, one that ultimately brings her to Australia and, finally, behind the wheel.
