In this episode of Life After Corporate, host Deb Boulanger sits down with Jen Coken to unravel the complexities of imposter syndrome and authentic leadership. Jen's journey from a political career to becoming an acclaimed coach provides invaluable insights into overcoming self-doubt and embracing genuine authority. Together, they explore how early-life experiences shape our professional lives, the challenges of transitioning from corporate to entrepreneurial worlds, and practical advice on mindfulness and self-discovery. Tune in to discover how to transform imposter syndrome into your superpower and leave a lasting legacy, no matter where your journey begins. [00:05- 14:54] Legacy and Authenticity in Leadership Jen Coken discusses the importance of leaving a legacy, stressing that it doesn't require fame or vast impacts. Authority is defined as confidence and authenticity, not merely power or status. Coken brings attention to the pervasive nature of imposter syndrome, comparing it to a pandemic that leaders face. Jen shares a story of a woman who lost her identity by conforming to traditional expectations in a male-dominated industry. [14:55 -22:19] Imposter Syndrome and Corporate Challenges Imposter syndrome is described as a phenomenon involving an amygdala hijack, leading to reactions like fight or flight. She advises leaders to be curious rather than assume, particularly in meetings and professional settings. Strategies include asserting oneself and sharing personal context deliberately and strategically. Jen recounts her personal pivot from corporate life, illustrating her initial struggles with visibility and imposter syndrome. [22:20 - 33:14] Mindfulness and Personal Development Mindfulness is highlighted as a tool to observe rather than control emotions, aiding in rewiring neural pathways. Coken speaks about the 6-year-old self's influence on present-day decisions and behaviors. The power of being an observer of emotions to foster new ways of being is underscored. Jen Coken shares insights on transforming imposter syndrome into a superpower and embracing it as a driver for success. [33:15 - 39:02] Communicating and Dealing with Insecurity Coken suggests recording and analyzing thoughts to separate fact from fiction, a method she calls "The Power Code." Emphasizes the significance of owning one's stories and making bold decisions despite uncertainties. "Fake fear" vs. "real fear" is a concept discussed to manage internal insecurities. Utilize self-acceptance and authenticity to combat self-doubt in crowded markets. Today's Guest: Jen CokenThis is the part where I share my life story, right? If it's okay with you I'd like to go about this another way. (Or if boring is your thing, check out my LinkedIn!)Rather than give you a TEDx-worthy rendition of how I found my way to coaching executive leaders and their teams for the past 20 years, I want to share a few of the things that make me tick. To me, work and play are one. When you're juggling a tangle of responsibilities or wading your way through a full-stop crisis, life can seem so serious. Embracing the ridiculousness of life is what keeps me afloat. Humor and playfulness are what make me feel less alone and help me “get it all done."Questions are my best friends. And listening? We gab over chips and guac every Tuesday night. My point is, I love discovery and looking at circumstances with new eyes. And: I whole-heartedly enjoy pushing boundaries and throwing bias to the side. It's how we get into uncharted territory (and how I survived 30 years as a grassroots organizer in politics). Others just call me “The Sledgehammer.” I tend to cut through the crap and I've got a serious thing for authenticity. My vision is a world where you are free to be yourself, grounded in who you are, and achieving your soul's purpose, but arriving there begins with getting real about why things are the way they are — in a judgement-free space, of course. From the Episode:"If you're allowing imposter syndrome to rule over your life, you're not expressing yourself." -Dr. T"When I started creating boundaries and saying no gracefully, my productivity went through the rough." -Jen CokenContact our Guest Jen Coken: https://www.jencoken.com/If you know anyone that needs to hear what we talked about today, please subscribe and leave us a review or go to https://heart-hustle-and-humor.simplecast.com/

Business Unveiled: Expert Tips and Secrets from Top Creative Industry Professionals
If you’re a business owner who feels like you’ve lost your power, our guest today is going to come in and shatter all of your doubts. She’ll help you embrace your genius and own your success! She’s really going to be your personal wrecking ball, pulling down all of the fears that are keeping you from the life you want. Our guest is Jen Coken, an expert on imposter syndrome, and we’re talking about how you can get out of your own way and gain the success you want! I’m sure you all know what imposter syndrome is, but maybe it’s difficult to see it in your own life. There are a few different types of imposter syndrome that Jen talks about, which may help you figure out if and how you are affected by it. What they all have in common is this moment in your past, usually a small experience, that made you feel like you weren’t enough. Unfortunately, this little experience may still be stuck with you and affecting your mentality. To overcome this, you’ll need to examine this experience and how it is affecting you and move past it. If you’re a high achiever, (and I know you are because you are even reading this) then imposter syndrome may be a bigger problem for you than for most people. The more you want, the more you have to overcome. You’ll face more doubts because you have a lot more that you are working towards. So if you have lots of goals and lots of doubts, don’t worry! It’s natural. The type of people that don’t get pulled down by their imposter syndrome are the kind of people who love solutions. We’re the solution people, the people who make things work even when they aren’t going our way. So if you’re struggling with doubts, focus on solutions. You’ll get somewhere, I promise, and it will be good. Imposter syndrome is a big problem for a lot of you because I hear you talking about it all the time. From both Jen and I: we know you can be the powerful and successful women that you want to be. Don’t get in your own way! Take the success and profit you want! If you want to hear more on this topic, listen to the podcast! Watch out for another episode in the next few days! Main Topics: Imposter Syndrome Why High Achievers feel more doubt The type of people that overcome Imposter Syndrome Key Takeaways: “We’re always trying to be like other people, fit into other people’s idea of who we should be, fit into some other mold. You know what: do it your way because when you’re doing it your way, people are attracted to you.” “If you don't have imposter syndrome, you are not playing a big enough game.” “The only person in your way is you. So get out of your dang way!”

Jen Coken is an executive coach and recovering stand-up comedian. Jen at an early age knew that she had to be the funny one because she never fit into the traditional archetype of the ‘pretty girl.’ She went down a journey of self-discovery a few years ago and discovered all of this was a byproduct of imposter syndrome. Today’s episode covers what is imposter syndrome, why everyone has it, and how to overcome these thoughts that are weighing you down. Key Takeaways What is imposter syndrome? When our brain feels a signal that we’re threatened, we start to develop coping mechanisms to help us overcome them. Jen learned early on that she was going to be the funny side-kick. She didn’t fit into the model of the ‘pretty one.’ Everyone has imposter syndrome. Jen takes the lead and begins to coach Michelle on her own show! Men struggle with speaking out just as much as women do. However, they’re not as verbal about it as women are. When Michelle’s in a meeting, what is she afraid of? Don’t let your inner upset eight-year-old ruin your entire life. It’s only natural that we develop brain patterns to protect ourselves and to play it safe. If you didn’t have these thoughts holding you back, what kind of person would you be? What we see in others, a lot of times, is what we see in ourselves that we don’t like. What you can’t be, robs you of your power. If we are angry and reactive, our power gets robbed from being proactive. How do you get your power back? You look within. Jen shares a childhood story about anger when she was 15. The desire to help women overcome imposter syndrome and the framework to empower women started a long time ago for Jen because of what she had to overcome. Resources Jencoken.com Jen on LinkedIn Impostorsyndrome.com The Artist’s Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity, by Julia Cameron Quotes Michelle’s quote: “As you further yourself on the ladder of success, the better chance you have that you will struggle with imposter syndrome to a greater degree.” “If you feel like you have to do it alone because if you asked for help, people would know you really didn’t have what it takes — that’s imposter syndrome.” “She is looking for people to be critical of her, which is completely shutting down her voice.” “If I wasn’t having all of these stupid thoughts questioning myself, who would I be?”

Todd Wilms co-wrote [with Jill Soley] Beyond Product, a guide for business founders and entrepreneurs on how to take their big idea and turn it into a successful company. Todd is a huge fan of Emperor Palpatine (though not in a whole “dark side, kill rebels” kind of way). The Empire in its infancy was a startup and Palpatine, as a founder, was not only charismatic; he systematically took over…everything. Taking control of the Galactic Senate was a huge marketing coup orchestrated by a startup and completed with perfect execution. As a CMO-turned entrepreneur who loves a challenge, Todd created foundersplace.co as a champion of dreamers, trailblazers, and visionaries. He understand what it’s like to have an idea and love working 18-hour days. "The joy of seeing a concept come to life is simply indescribable." Founders, entrepreneurs, and startups can’t afford missteps with 50% of all new companies failing. That is where Todd comes in.
