Have you ever felt like an imposter in your career or struggled with leaving a meaningful legacy?  In this episode of Life After Corporate, host Deb Boulanger sits down with Jen Coken to unravel the complexities of imposter syndrome and authentic leadership. Jen's journey from a political career to becoming an acclaimed coach provides invaluable insights into overcoming self-doubt and embracing genuine authority. Together, they explore how early-life experiences shape our professional lives, the challenges of transitioning from corporate to entrepreneurial worlds, and practical advice on mindfulness and self-discovery.  Tune in to discover how to transform imposter syndrome into your superpower and leave a lasting legacy, no matter where your journey begins.    [00:05- 14:54] Legacy and Authenticity in Leadership   Jen Coken discusses the importance of leaving a legacy, stressing that it doesn't require fame or vast impacts. Authority is defined as confidence and authenticity, not merely power or status. Coken brings attention to the pervasive nature of imposter syndrome, comparing it to a pandemic that leaders face. Jen shares a story of a woman who lost her identity by conforming to traditional expectations in a male-dominated industry.     [14:55 -22:19] Imposter Syndrome and Corporate Challenges   Imposter syndrome is described as a phenomenon involving an amygdala hijack, leading to reactions like fight or flight. She advises leaders to be curious rather than assume, particularly in meetings and professional settings. Strategies include asserting oneself and sharing personal context deliberately and strategically. Jen recounts her personal pivot from corporate life, illustrating her initial struggles with visibility and imposter syndrome.     [22:20 - 33:14]  Mindfulness and Personal Development      Mindfulness is highlighted as a tool to observe rather than control emotions, aiding in rewiring neural pathways. Coken speaks about the 6-year-old self's influence on present-day decisions and behaviors. The power of being an observer of emotions to foster new ways of being is underscored. Jen Coken shares insights on transforming imposter syndrome into a superpower and embracing it as a driver for success.   [33:15 - 39:02] Communicating and Dealing with Insecurity   Coken suggests recording and analyzing thoughts to separate fact from fiction, a method she calls "The Power Code." Emphasizes the significance of owning one's stories and making bold decisions despite uncertainties. "Fake fear" vs. "real fear" is a concept discussed to manage internal insecurities. Utilize self-acceptance and authenticity to combat self-doubt in crowded markets.   Connect with Jen Coken Email:  jen@jencoken.com Website:  Jen Coken Coaching - Author | Lifestyle Coach | Comedian LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/coken/ Instagram: @jencoken Facebook: Jen Coken Coaching Jen's Books “Make Imposter Syndrome Your Superpower”   www.jencokenbook.com “When I Die, Take My Panties”  Amazon.com: When I Die, Take My Panties: Turning Your Darkest Moments into Your Greatest Gifts eBook : Coken, Jennifer: Kindle Store   Barnes & Noble Link If you buy the book PREsale from Barnes & Noble, you'll receive a special gift from Jen: Make Imposter Syndrome Your Superpower: The Ultimate Guide for Women in STEM to Lead with More Authority, Influence, and Impact by Jen Coken, Paperback | Barnes & Noble® Go to https://lifeaftercorporatepodcast.com/ for all episodes 169. In this episode I interviewed Keith Blackmore, who edited Philip Gould's book When I Die, which was published after Philip had died.Philip was one of the architects of New Labour, but in 2011 he had cancer. Keith, then the deputy editor at The Times, started serialising an essay Philip had written about his experience, which later formed part of the book. A few months later, Philip died, after which his family asked Keith to edit this book, When I Die.In the interview we talk about how Keith became involved and the way newspaper editing can make for gripping narrative, but mostly we talked about how he gathered all the words Philip had left behind, Philip's writing style, and how Philip documented his death so beautifully. You can buy the book here:https://uk.bookshop.org/p/books/when-i-die-lessons-from-the-death-zone-philip-gould/1858616?ean=9780349139111 Keith also recommended A Death in Malta by Paul Caruana Galizia . Rundown -   Jane Feldman in the Inner Sanctum of Craig's Lawyers' Lounge - 49:25   Troubadour Dave Gunders - 01:53:58   "When I Die" by Dave Gunders - 02:08:44   Sordid Lauren Boebert incident at the Denver theater is thoroughly reviewed. So is the reaction by members of the Colorado and national media. Remember how Boebert went on Caplis Show to unveil bogus October 2022 surprise claiming her opponent had adulterous sex in a storage trailer in Aspen, a claim later discredited. We do.   We've got the sound of Caplis' reacting to the Boebert incident this week where he goes after the media for letting Dems like Polis and Biden get away with worse. The double standard is real and we use sound to show where it actually exists - on conservative media. Kyle Clark is part of this soundbite story.   Listen to Boebert reading a Caplis-approved script and flubbing it badly. Abortion opposition is a prop for BoBo and many of her fellow travelers, but it works to get some people on her side. And that's all it takes. https://twitter.com/RonFilipkowski/status/1705009115049648439   On the eve of Yom Kippur and G-d knows what else, we bring you both a spiritual and prosecution oriented show. Being Jewish may seem obvious if your name is Feldman, but there's always a little more to the story. The Feldmans were connected to the upper echelon of Manhattan politics.   Jane Feldman's father was a prominent NYC attorney close to the famous Morgenthaus, the most prominent Jewish family in American politics for years. We do a lot of name-dropping, including Kennedys, Roosevelts and celebrities Jane Feldman knew growing up in NY. Jane went on to be a prosecutor for the NYC DA's Office where she served 8+ years.   Jane Feldman also worked as Assistant AG in Colorado. She's in her fifth decade of legal practice now, meaning she enters the INNER SANCTUM reserved for Craig's Act Five Attorneys, now in their fifth decade of practice. Such lawyers are fearless and opinionated. Jane comes through.   An outspoken MAGA critic, Jane is known by Congressman Joe Neguse and others as a great sharp-tongued, fact-checker of MAGA on social media. Feldman calls out conservative disinformation and stands up against Jew haters. We talk about MAGA and bigotry – and how best to react as lawyers.   We analyze the various Trump trials and tribulations. This drama has many NYC components such as Trump and Rudy Giuliani. Go behind the scenes with this NYC connected guest with sharp analytical and prosecutorial skills. Jane Feldman is wise.   Show Troubadour Dave Gunders is great at contemplating the big issues that go with Yom Kippur. It is the day Jews confront their mortality. Gunders does that straight on with his amazing song titled, "When I Die." Is it metaphorical or literal when he says he wants to be laid down in the muddy water of the Mississippi? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbfXJaVSCrI

I launched my webcam, put on headphones and sat behind the microphone to record "An Oral History." Parts 1 and 2 were recorded on March 11, 2011. Part 3 was recorded on January 16, 2017. Part 4 was recorded on June 23, 2022. I gave my children copies of Parts 1, 2 and 3. I haven't yet shared Part 4. Fifteen to twenty years ago I first crafted a document I named, "When I Die." In it, I outlined, in some details, what I most wanted to happen when I die. I would regularly change and edit the document, often driven by the death of somebody. The deaths of close friends would spark greater editing. Life events then began to dramatically impact the document. As my life changed I'd edit the document. I changed the document drastically in the fall of 2018 when I went through some dark times. Since then I've changed it more slightly - tweaking it. I just finished making minor refinements to it this morning, sparked mostly because of the death of "the last man standing." I made this post on Facebook on July 10, 2023... The Last Man Standing He was among a select group of older men who helped shape, influence and challenge me to become better. Always better. Johnny Elmore, Ronny Wade, Barney Owens and Don King were the giants in my life. Trusted advisors I could call about anything. Everything. And I did call them. I leaned on them because they were stalwart men I could count on. The Lord's work was always their top priority. My spiritual best was unquestioned. For wise counsel, caring challenges, or correction, I found none better than this group of men. They knew God's Word and how to apply it to our lives. They hopefully saw me at my best, but most importantly, they helped when things were at their worst. Loving the Lord and His Church was THE common bond, but all four shared a wit, wisdom and humor that resonated with me since I was very young. They were fun. Funny. And it mattered. Men who could laugh at themselves, and others. Men who were slow to "should" me ("you should do this or that"). Instead, they were men open to question. To question the answers we may have thought we already knew. To answer the questions we may have not yet dared to ask. Truth seekers, each one of them. Truth tellers, all of them. I loved them all very much. For their knowledge, experience, insights, wisdom and candor. Don was the last man standing in my small, but vital circle of influence. At Ronny's passing I told him so. We talked about how as life rolls along we lose our mentors. I told him I may have to "get younger at that position." But there's no getting younger at that position. There's only the acknowledgement and gratitude that I had them for as long as I did. And I tried to make the most of it without being too intrusive. I came of age under the tutelage of these men. They were watchful protectors over every significant event and decision I made. In just a matter of months three of them were gone. Barney. Johnny. Ronny. I told Don I hoped we'd have many more years together in the journey. I said, "I'm unprepared to go it alone without at least one old man in my life...tag you're it!" We chuckled...unaware of how little time we had. But in spite of his health challenges in recent years as his outward man began to perish, I was confident that Don's inner man was being renewed day by day. That's a confidence I had in all four of the old men in my life. It's why I was always anxious to hear their wisdom, listen to their counsel and make my decisions accordingly. I'm thankful to have sat in the presence of these four giants who each helped me stand when I might have crumbled. Men whose influence is sure to outlive them. I loved them all. And felt loved back by each of them. The following audio was recorded in my house on Friday afternoon, April 19, 2013 when Don and I recorded a conversation about building a good Christian home - a recording I made for a handful of young men I was hoping to serve at the time.

The first real studio tour I did Inside The Yellow Studio was more than a decade in. It was 2015. At that point, I'd been laying down audio tracks online for years. Then when you guys helped me get the new (at the time) Rode Rodecaster Pro in 2019, I did a new tour. Click here to see and listen to that. I won't rehash history because you can go back and dive as deeply as you'd like. Or not all at. The broadcast workflow has always been how I've rolled. That is, I prepare in advance, then I hit RECORD, and mostly, I'm done. It's finished. My editing is pre-recording editing. It's a broadcast workflow because that's how live broadcasts work. There are no do-overs. It's out and done. Foibles and all. That workflow was the genesis of The Yellow Studio version 1.0. It consisted of a sizable rack of gear, which I loved. It wasn't cheap, but my sound was consistently great - whether I was on a Skype call or recording an audio or video. Because all the sound was produced in real-time through all the hardware I had. Software is a much cheaper route to go, but you have to incorporate a recording workflow, not a broadcast one. That means, you record, then you process the file and fool with things after-the-fact. No thanks! In 2019 the Rodecaster Pro ushered in The Yellow Studio Version 2.0. I ditched the full rack of equipment, replacing every bit of it with one device - the Rode Rodecaster Pro. It was a big shift - and improvement in the signal chain. Not just because the Rodecaster Pro is such a great device, but because all the cabling changed and became very straightforward. Now I was able to use shorter run XLR cables directly from the microphones to the Rode. No more going into the vocal strip (mic preamps), then into another processor, then into an interface...gone was the spaghetti of wires Inside The Yellow Studio. It was wonderful and the studio became so much nicer for me! Thanks to many of you who contributed money to help me buy the Rode! The Yellow Studio is soon going to go away. Well, more accurately, Version 2.0 is going away. Not because of the new Rodecaster Pro 2, which I hope to get soon, but because I'm physically moving. Yep, moving! Lord willing, Rhonda and I will be finding some new digs where I'll have to erect The Yellow Studio Version 3.0. I can't yet tell you the details because I don't know them, but I'll figure it out. Lord willing, The Yellow Studio Version 3.0 will include the new Rode Rodecaster Pro 2, but we'll see how it goes. Otherwise, I have no other hardware changes planned. At some point, I'll migrate to an Apple laptop and give up the 27" Apple iMac (circa 2017). I'll keep a big monitor, but I'm going to shift to greater mobility so a laptop will be vital. Some Things That Will Be Different In Version 3.0 No books. Okay, fewer books. So few they won't likely matter. The Yellow Studio Versions 1.0 and 2.0 had eight (8) bookcases full of books. And knick-knacks. Oh, the knick-knacks will remain! ;) Let it never be said I didn't have my priorities straight. About 4 of those bookcases were filled with religious or "church" books. Bible commentaries and other books that I've spent my life collecting. And reading and studying. In my now "not so famous" document, When I Die...I had always written down that my son would get the entire library. Well, in my efforts to purge about 80% of my personal possessions, I asked him if he wanted them now. I only had 2 requests: a) make sure our immediate family, including the grandkids, have access to them and b) that includes me! He agreed so he'll be getting about half of the books. The other half of the library consists of secular books, mostly business and biographies. I plan to keep about 3 shelves of those and donate all the rest! My life hasn't had this few books since I was a teenager. But I don't mind. It's quite liberating actually. I've already worked through the emotions and depression about it. ;) No CD rack.

Episode 249 - Sanctification (Is Making Me Late)

Ellis Brazeal recently pointed out a clear-and-present fact about what we call "sanctification". Ellis observed that the moment we begin to think we have it, or have made it, it is completely nullified. In other words, the only actual sanctification at which one ever arrives is un-self-conscious. Another way of putting this would be to say that no amount of or "espece de" virtue-signalling will ever cut it. The moment you draw attention to your "growth" or "discipleship", at that exact moment it gets disqualified as evidence of moral improvement. The only material sanctification is, to the evincer of it, unawares! Someone ELSE, maybe, sees you're a better man than you were before in some area. But the moment you see it, or glory in it even, it vanishes. It literally ceases to exist. I would never in a million years have believed that the Top 40 song by the Canadian band Motherlode entitled "When I Die" would apply to me. At the time, which was the spring of 1970, I disregarded the song 100%, as I listened to it in the late-night fast food restaurant on the way home from the library. It could never ever be or become true of, well, me. On the other hand, "When I Die" made an indelible impression. On the soul, that is. (See Podcast 248, "Dead Reckoning (https://pzspodcast.fireside.fm/212)".) My soul knew, unconsciously, that the song was a point of inspiration. (Unlike 'Led Zeppelin II', which at the time, was the sole sustenance, in practice, of yours truly.) Some day I hope "When I Die" will be played at my funeral -- or the wake, like they played Lloyd Fonvielle's signature songs at his wake not so long ago. But I'll be maybe shadowing the place, wondering whether it really came true. I hope so much that it will have. And hope that my sanctification will not be "making me late" (Carly Simon). LUV U. THIS PODCAST IS DEDICATED TO ELLIS AND DEBBIE BRAZEAL.

This week we are honored to present the Gonzoest podcast ever.  We welcome Wayne Ewing from Hunter Thompson Films to the show.  Wayne is an Emmy nominated filmmaker, a roving reporter, and was, at one time, Hunter Thompson's Road Manager.  Wayne has also made 4 films about the great Doctor of Journalism, “Breakfast With Hunter,” “When I Die,” “Free Lisl,” and “Animals, Whores & Dialouge.”  Wayne talks about his early film work and he tells of that fateful night at San Francisco’s O’Farrell Theatre where he met Hunter Thompson who was the night manager at the time.  This episode was a real honor to do, it was great to talk to some one who looked to Hunter as a Hero, as I do, and was able to meet him and document his incredible life.  So please listen in and be sure to check Wayne’s Work out by clicking the Bold words above!  All that and more on this weeks Enhanced Podcast!!

Indy In-Tune Radio continues to take off, with audiences tripling on average beginning with the official kickoff party.  Since that time we've added our first two show hosts, the inimitable Mia Kileen with the Rock Show (Thursdays at 8:00 PM) and Anita Vokill with the experimental electronic Return to Space (Friday's at 10:00 PM), and there's still more to come.  On the ratings front, we've been a consistent , and in the top 15-20% overall.  Now, to put this in TOTAL perspective ... the lowest-rated major radio station in Indianapolis is WXNT-AM with just under a half-share. If we compare that (conservatively) to our "unique streams opened," then they still have about 30 times our audience.  So ... still a hobby this month. This weeks show marks the second one brought to me by the legendary Levar Johnson from .  This time Eyes on Fire treats us to a sneak peek at their upcoming eponymous release a few months ahead of time.  Comprised of five long time veterans with an impressive resume between them, the band is a solid hitting outfit that commands a loyal following and are staples of Indy's Heavy Metal scene.  If the material featured tonight, and the comments on their latest video are any indication, this phenomenon is not limited to the metro area, either.  Expect big things from them over the next year. Links referenced in the show:     Eyes on Fire can be found here | | | | They emerged from the remnants of the band . Their first release, Anger to Ashes, recorded with the old lineup, is available here: |   The material from this podcast is from their upcoming album, and can be found on .   It is being produced by Bone Thronburg at . The video for When I Die was directed by and is available on their YouTube Page.  It was filmed at the in Alexandria, Indiana. This interview was powered by , as the magic fridge is currently running low on magic.  Catch them January 25 at playing in support of 's CD release party.
