She has built up a considerable business and a reputation to match… and she's just getting started. In today's podcast we will discuss: Balancing the demands of life as an owner of 5 salons, and wife, mother and finding time for everything else Sustainability in salons today Creating a team and culture where people want to come to work The customer service journey Growing a team and successful expansion And lots more! In this Episode: [03:30] Gina also has a fashion degree and became interested in entrepreneurship. [03:39] She moved to London 21 years ago and worked at John Frieda. [04:04] Gina wanted to bring California sunshine to London and create a team and culture where people would want to come to work. [05:08] Yes, it was love that brought Gina to London. One husband and three children later, and she's still here! [08:21] We talk about what the industry can learn from different areas. [10:02] Gina accomplishes so much. She is constantly innovating. She is so passionate about what she does, it doesn't feel like work. [12:57] Being in your zone is like meditation. The mindful hairdresser allows hairdressers to be in the flow and create mindful haircuts. It's communication in a deep creative space for clients. [15:27] Gina has three salons in London. [24:51] Gina and her partner want to franchise sustainable salons and help other entrepreneurs. [26:28] Look at your products. Are they using sustainable materials? Look at plastics and bottles. Look at energy and recycling. Consider everything that you purchase. Reuse and refuse, if you can. Think holistically about everything including water use. [30:12] The green fee is included in the price of the haircuts. This is who we are and what we do. We also plant a tree for each client. [34:28] Gina talks about the importance of having a strong culture and teaching the team the why and the values from the start. [41:19] Generational changes include focusing on mental health and supporting students in making up for lost time. Stability, security, and finding a career path is also so important. Celebrity Stylist, successful salon owner, His award winning salon reached the height of popularity after being featured on Bravo TV, where they gathered millions of fans. Since this exposure, Martino and his salon have been featured in Modern Salon Magazine, Vogue, Launchpad, Behind the Chair, Salon Today, and The Golden Globes. Before creating his own brand, Martino By Martino Cartier, he was the International Artistic Director for Keratin Complex for 6 years and the Global Artistic Director for Hotheads for 2 years. Martino has been featured along with Tabatha Coffey, Kim Vo, Ken Paves, John Frieda and many more at the Stylist Choice Awards in Chicago. Martino's mother recalls him as a young child stating," He was born with a pair of golden shears in his hand. When he was only five years of age, a group of neighborhood children were all watching cartoons together, but instead he was watching one of the girls braid her sister's hair." Since that Saturday morning in Key Largo, Florida, it has been his passion to make the world beautiful one head at a time. Martino was adopted by a loving family at the age of 6 months. At the earliest age possible, his mother explained to him the few details of his adoption. Martino learned that both of his biological parents were from Cairo, Egypt. In 2006, Martino had a dream that led him to find his birth family and it's Egyptian roots. A-YAD, Martino's middle name meaning celebration. Martino believes that a combination of charity and education makes this all happen. It originally started just trying to help out a family with a terminally ill child looking to raise $5,000. In just one day, they surpassed their goal raising over $20,000 for that family in need. When asked what do you attribute this success to, Martino replied, "When I started out, I decided it was my job to not only make people beautiful above the scalp, but below as well. As I traveled this amazing journey, I started out with only a three-station salon. Dozens of cut-a-thons later, and hundreds of thousands of dollars donated to local families in need, I now have a salon with over 50 stations. It is with confidence we can say that we are the best! God has blessed us and I am thankful!" Cartier founded the charity Wigs and Wishes, granting wishes to those with cancer and life threatening diseases. From her side gig at YSL Beauté, while she worked in finance, to John Frieda (before acquisition), Chloé Fragrance (with Mr. Lagerfeld), Elizabeth Taylor Fragrances, and those are just the start. Lorrie had a stellar career on the corporate side of beauty before she began working with beauty startups. She launched the skincare brand Sio before joining with her partner, Celeste Lee, to conceive and launch Caire Beauty, a line designed for the specific skincare needs for women over the age of 40! On this episode of Start Right Here, Lorrie shares some lessons from her career path, why she decided to become a beauty entrepreneur now, and why it's important to build relationships and support. Lorrie shares that entrepreneurship has been a passion since the fourth grade when she sold sandwiches to her teaches at her East Orange, NJ elementary school. She had a jewelry line while she worked in finance too. But the beauty industry was a detour, or to put it better, a right turn for her. Her part-time job at Bloomingdale's was to make extra money, but it exposed her to a more exciting career path than she had found in finance. She also shares how her time at Howard University prepared her for career success. Lorrie explains why she and Celeste focused their business on menopausal skin, why skincare can't be one size fits all, and how approaching these subjects doesn't have to be depressing but a tool for empowerment. She also shares how she has built relationships that have helped her grow her business, including some that helped Caire be selected for The Entrepreneur's Roundtable Accelerator Program. In addition, Lorrie points out how the beauty industry can benefit from having more women in leadership roles as well as why it is critical for companies to not only recognize Black consumers but Black women within their ranks who can help them find success. What does it really take to have a celebrity client base? My guest on today's Podcast is Nicola Clarke who is a salon partner and the creative colour director at John Frieda salons in London as well as being a major celebrity colourist. Nicola's success is not only due to her talent as a colourist but her personal qualities of grit, determination and persistence which are lessons that we all need to take on board as we work through the coming weeks. For many hairdressers, the opportunity to work 1-1 with some of the worlds top models, musicians, actors and celebrities is their dream job and definition of success. But obviously, it’s a definition of success that only a few can achieve and even less can maintain. It takes more than just technical and creative skills. You also have to be a certain type of person to be able to deal with celebrity clients, because it can be demanding, unpredictable and stressful to the extreme… But the upside is also pretty cool as well! Nicola has a client list that includes the likes of Kate Moss, Madonna, Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchette, Carey Mulligan, Margot Robbie, Sienna Miller, Leonardo Dicaprio, Jake Gyllenhall, Brad Pitt, Claudia Schiffer, Tilda Swinton, Gwyneth Paltrow, Dua Lipa… I am sure you are getting the idea. Quite simply Nicola is the colourist behind some of the worlds most photographed faces as well as being called upon to create characters in the world of film. Nicola runs the gauntlet from film locations and magazine shoots to red carpet but is always back to the salon, which she describes as ‘the best part’ of the job. So if you are expecting some prima donna princess, you will be disappointed because Nicola is one of the most down to earth, loyal and normal people that you will ever meet and I suggest that that is one of her secret weapons! In This Episode: [02:36] Nicola, welcome to the show! [03:21] Nicola shares how she got into the business when she was thirteen. [04:35] When did you start working full time in a salon situation? [07:52] Nicola speaks about being interested in session hairdressing and wanting to be a part of that world. [10:12] She chats about working at a place called Hyper Salon. [12:35] Nicola shares that she took her holiday’s during fashion week with the hope that she could assist Sam McKnight. [14:35] Were you working in the salon as a colorist or an all-around hairdresser? [17:09] Nicola speaks about the transition from working at a salon to becoming a session stylist and colorist for celebrities. [19:31] She chats about an article in Vogue about her being Sam’s assistant. [20:27] Nicola shares being asked to fix Gwyneth Paltrow’s hair on set. [22:50] Antony believes that part of Nicola’s success is because she is not intimidated by anyone. [25:35] Nicola sees celebrities as regular clients, not as someone famous. [26:52] Have you had any push back from stars wanting something done that you weren’t comfortable doing? [29:06] Nicola says she loves doing red carpet work the most. [31:48] She shares a story about getting on a helicopter with Madonna. [33:55] Nicola speaks about working in John Frieda’s salon in London, where she has a salon named the Nicola Clarke Salon. [36:40] Opening the salon was one of the scariest things she has ever done. [38:50] Do you personally manage the salon? Do you still stand behind the chair? [42:00] Nicola shares about what she wished she had known before she opened the business. [45:21] Are awards and competitions vital to you as a salon owner? [48:43] Nicola gives young stylists advice about having a career as enjoyable as hers. [51:23] Don’t listen to anyone who says you can’t do it. [52:51] Thank you so much, Nicola, for sharing your story! Links and Resources Grow My Salon Business Find Nicola Nicola Clarke at John Frieda @nicolaclarkecolour Instagram | Pinterest

Trevor Sorbie is known as an innovative hairdresser and is the founder of the charity, MyNewHair. Born into a family of hairdressers – both his father and grandfather were barbers – he spent the first decade of his life in Scotland before the family relocated to Essex. His first ambition was to become an artist, but when he left school aged 15 with no qualifications after being bullied, his father suggested that he could help out at his barbershop. Within three months, Trevor was cutting hair and found that he loved it. Five years down the line, however, he decided to learn about cutting women’s hair and following his training, his first job was at a Vidal Sassoon salon. He would later go on to work at both John Frieda and Toni & Guy, before launching his own salon with his business partner in 1979. He invented several iconic haircuts of the era, including the Wedge and the Chop, and he came up with the technique of scrunch drying. His innovative styles won him the British Hairdresser of the Year award four times. In 2006, he set up his charity MyNewHair to teach hairdressers how to cut and style wigs after his sister-in-law lost her hair in the course of her cancer treatment. Since then, he has trained nearly a thousand hairdressers. He was the first hairdresser to be awarded an MBE by the Queen in 2004. Valerie Lopez co-founded design studio CR-eate and Shoot My Travel, a global travel photographer marketplace with her business partner Camilo Rojas (who is in part 2). In this episode, which is our first, we talk to Valerie about passion, start-up perseverance and having a good business culture. Speaking to two entrepreneurs that have founded and actively run two successful companies was insightful as their thoughts on how to get started (their client lists includes DDB New York, L'Oreal and John Frieda to name a few) was jargon-free, encouraging and honest, with no shying away with how difficult and challenging it can be when you're building the foundations for your creative pursuit. Along The Lines Podcast is brought to you by Leading Lines Magazine. This episode is produced by Raphael Boamah-Asare.

Joining me in this episode of the show is Luke Hersheson (@lukehersheson) the Creative Director at Hersheson's (@hershesons) salons and a member of The House of Experts at John Frieda. Let me just say this at the outset - Luke was a brilliant guest, not least because he's been tuning into the podcast and loves the show! In our conversation we talk about the fact Luke knew he wanted to follow his father's footsteps into hairdressing from a very young age, what it's like to have a busy, creative mind, his desire to want to make salons relevant again, travelling the world with supermodels and his pursuit of excellence. We each talk about our experiences with anxiety and the steps we've taken to overcome what feel, at times, crippling. Luke tells me the story of how he was signed and started working on global advertising campaigns. His first trip, in 2001, was with supermodel Gisele for Missoni and he explains what it's really like to have to step up to the plate and how creativity comes together on a shoot. As well as Gisele Luke has styled Victoria Beckham, Sali Hughes, Emma Watson and Sienna Miller - among many others. Also in this episode of the show we talk about the technical revolution, how perhaps social media didn't seem like something we had to get involved with when platforms such as Facebook and Twitter started cropping up, but also how to find balance in a world of technical/social overload. We talk about meditation, the apps to use and the techniques that can help you find balance as well as Luke's plans for the future and how he goes about setting goals. Finally Luke and I chat about drive, about how passion spurs you on to work even harder, but also how to find a balance and why it's important to find and appreciate moments of calm between the frenetic schedules of fashion week and the like. We also kick the show off with an embarrassing tale from fashion week a few years ago when I stumbled into Luke at a party wearing one of the Hersheson Clip In Fringes. Every home should have one! There's no pesky waiting around for your hair to grow out after you've had a fringe cut in and it's so easy to clip-in and clip-out. I wish I could tell you I was a good model for it... The clip-in hair is just one part of Hersheson's excellent accessories offering - why not have a browse >> Hersheson's Accessories. The anxiety essence I reference in the show is from Helios >> Boronia Flower. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
