Jack Ohman - Tribune Content Agency Donald Trump inherited a booming economy from Barack Obama in 2017. It took him three years and one botched pandemic response to send it spiraling towards recession. He's learned from his first-term mistakes. This time, he inherited an economy the Economist magazine called the envy of the world and has managed to tank it in a matter of just weeks. This time, in between rounds of golf and incessant posting on social media, Donald Trump has managed to take down Wall Street and Main Street by declaring financial war on countries who thought we were allies. The political repercussions have begun with Trump's polling numbers tanking, and a majority of Americans for the first time disapproving of his handling of the economy. The vast majority also oppose most of the Musk-led chainsaw massacre of federal employees.  The end game? Trump and Musk appear to be setting the stage for privatizing things like the Weather Bureau, FAA, K-12 education and the long-sought GOP dream: privatizing Social Security so they and their billionaire buddies can wet their beaks dipping into literally trillions of spending over the coming decades. In Michigan, 20 months before the election polling shows Jocelyn Benson with a sizable lead in the Democratic gubernatorial race, and Pete Buttigieg the strongest candidate for U.S. Senate - but he's announced he's not running for either the Senate or Governor. We do, however, have another entrant into the Democratic race for Governor: Lt. Governor Garland Gilchrist. The challenge for Gilchrist: can the tallest candidate (6'9") in the mix overcome the longstanding Michigan history that has doomed the gubernatorial aspirations of Lt. Governors for the last 30 years? The list of would-be Lt. Governors seeking the top job is long, distinguished ... and uniformly unsuccessful: Jim Brickley (1982) Dick Posthumus (2002) John Cherry (2010) Brian Calley (2018) The last Lt. Governor to advance via election was John Swainson in 1960. Lt. Governor William Milliken inherited the job when George Romney resigned in 1969 to join the Nixon cabinet, and went on to serve 14 years as perhaps the best Governor in Michigan's modern history. 20 months before the election, polling shows Jocelyn Benson with a sizable lead in the Democratic gubernatorial race, and Pete Buttigieg the strongest candidate for U.S. Senate. This week's guest is an early entrant into the race to flip. Michigan's 10th district. Onetime military helicopter pilot John James has run for office, losing twice for U.S. Senate and winning two terms in Congress. In each case, the elections were extremely close. But as every politician knows, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. Our guest this week can offer first-hand testimony on the latter - hand grenades. He's an expert in the subject. Joining the podcast is political newcomer Alex Hawkins. He served in the Middle East as a U.S. Army "Explosive Ordnance Disposal" Officer. He continues as an Active Duty Veteran and Oakland County Reserve Sheriff's Deputy. His resume includes working on the staffs of both then-Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin and Senator Gary Peters. Hawkins, 30, is a 2021 graduate of Central Michigan University. He and his wife Amanda live in Rochester Hills. Planned Parenthood offers free abortion pills to DNC, Reporter: Media doesn't challenge Kamala Harris, U.S. Supreme Court rules against transgenderism

It's Wednesday, August 21st, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark and Adam McManus Northern India state arrested 1,682 Christians About a dozen states in India have anti-conversion laws. These laws are often used to persecute Christians. The state of Uttar Pradesh in Northern India has the harshest version of the law. Over the last four years, the state has arrested 1,682 people under the Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act. Most of those people are Christians, including pastors. The arrests have led to over 800 charges.  However, International Christian Concern noted, “No one has been convicted under the anti-conversion law because there has never been a shred of hard evidence against the religious conversions.” According to Open Doors, India is the 11th most difficult country worldwide in which to be a Christian. British pro-lifer compensated $17,000 A Christian woman won a settlement against British police recently after praying silently outside an abortion mill, reports The Washington Times. West Midlands Police have arrested Isabel Vaughan-Spruce multiple times since 2022 for her prayers. Alliance Defending Freedom U.K. reports she won a settlement worth about $17,000.  However, the U.K. is considering a national implementation of censorship zones around abortion mills. Vaughan-Spruce warned, “Our culture is shifting towards a clamp down on viewpoint diversity, with Christian thought and prayer increasingly under threat of censorship.” U.S. Supreme Court rules against transgenderism Last Friday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against the Biden administration's attempt to protect transgenderism. The Department of Education had issued new rules under Title IX which, as originally envisioned, prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex. The new regulations would have added protections for so-called “gender identity” and “sexual orientation.” Jonathan Scruggs with Alliance Defending Freedom said, “Female athletes, students, and teachers across the country are right to stand against the administration's adoption of extreme gender ideology, which would have devastating consequences for students, teachers, administrators, and families.” Biden: “America, I gave my best to you!” On Monday night, President Joe Biden summed up his career in politics at the end of his remarks at the 2024 Democratic Convention in Chicago. PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN: “America, I gave my best to you! [Cheering and Applause] “For 50 years, like many of you, I gave my heart and soul to our nation. And I have been blessed a million times in return with the support of the American people. I may have been too young to be in the Senate -- I wasn't 30 yet -- and too old to stay as president. [Laughter] “But I hope that you know, how grateful I am to all of you.” Planned Parenthood offers free abortion kill pills to DNC attendees The Democratic National Convention began on Monday in Chicago.  Disturbingly, Planned Parenthood has been offering free abortions to attendees at the venue. Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser said, “The Democratic National Abortion Convention puts the extremism of the Democrats on full display. The days when the Democrats insisted abortion should be ‘safe, legal and rare' are history.  “From ‘free' abortion drugs aboard the Planned Parenthood bus [to DNC attendees] to a draft party platform that uses the word abortion an unprecedented 13 times, today's Democrats under the Harris-Walz ticket are officially the Shout Your Abortion Party.” How Kamala Harris/Tim Walz ticket is radically pro-abortion Dannenfelser underscored how radical the Harris/Walz ticket is. She said, “Everyone should be asking Kamala Harris, Tim Walz, and all the Democrats' candidates the question: ‘What are your exceptions?' “Harris and Walz won't name a single limit on abortion they support – not in the seventh, eighth or ninth month of pregnancy when unborn babies clearly feel pain, and not even when a child is born alive following an abortion attempt. “They stand for eliminating the most basic protections for women and girls, such as informed consent and parental involvement, and seek to shut down alternatives to abortion.” Romans 3:15 and 18 says, “Their feet are swift to shed blood. … There is no fear of God before their eyes.” Fox reporter: Media doesn't challenge Kamala Harris In an appearance on FOX News with Sandra Smith, John Roberts made the case that the media is in the tank for Kamala Harris. JOHN ROBERTS: “The media is just basically letting Kamala Harris say anything she wants and not really challenging her.” SANDRA SMITH: “I'm still amazed that when you go to her campaign website of course the first thing you see is a request from for money for donations. That's fine, but then you travel throughout her website, there's still no policy pitches or explanations or details being offered to voters as to how she's gonna fix -- fix the problems that she's laying out in her speeches.” ROBERTS: “It used to be if you wanted to get a good sense of what the policy of the particular candidate was you would go to their website and would be all laid out there on a policy page in great detail. That page doesn't even exist on Kamala Harris's website.” SMITH: “Not there.” 8.5% of U.S. homes worth $1 million A report from Redfin found the share of U.S. homes worth at least $1 million is at a record high. Eight and a half percent of homes are now worth $1 million or more, up from about two percent in 2014.  Home prices have been rising, and luxury home prices have been rising even more. The median sale price of luxury homes rose nine percent on an annual basis during the second quarter of this year. California metropolitan areas are seeing the most increase in million-dollar homes.  Landscapers spot unexploded World War 2 bomb And finally, a pair of landscape gardeners were left shell-shocked after digging up an unexploded bomb from World War II, reports GoodNewsNetwork.org. Residents were evacuated from their homes in Worcester, England, while police and bomb squads rushed to the scene following the discovery by Paul Probert and James Dobson, who is not the Christian psychologist who shares the same name. Paul said he thought he had found a Coca-Cola bottle at first until they saw the shape. After James did a Google image search, he learned it was a World War 2 bomb. West Mercia Police used an Explosive Ordnance Disposal team who examined the device for hours and transported it safely away from the area to carry out a controlled explosion. Paul said, “We've found water pipes and electricity lines, but never a bomb. It wasn't your average day.”  Close And that's The Worldview on this Wednesday, August 21st, in the year of our Lord 2024. Subscribe by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. The Explosive Ordnance Women's Leadership Summit, held from August 8-10, marked 50 years of women in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal career field. Attendees from across the globe gathered for two days of leadership, mentorship, and camaraderie, a unique forum focusing on women's leadership and mentorship that had not been seen before. More than 75 service members participated in the summit, including not only female EOD technicians but also men and women from various career fields. Linda Cox, a trailblazer in the field, shared her experiences from being the first woman to graduate from EOD school in 1974 to becoming the first EOD woman to achieve the rank of chief master sergeant in 1994. She highlighted the progress made over the years, with women now running teams and shops in the field. Despite advancements, women remain a minority in EOD, with only 38 women serving as EOD technicians out of 1,337 Airmen in the Air Force, comprising less than 2% of the career field. Chief Master Sgt. Diana Rogers, the second woman EOD Chief and the sole current female serving in that role, discussed the challenges faced by women in EOD and emphasized the importance of more women rising to leadership positions. The summit served as a testament to the progress made and the ongoing efforts to promote diversity and inclusivity in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal career field.

A U.S. service member has died after setting himself on fire Sunday outside the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C., authorities confirmed Monday. A video posted online showed the man shouting "Free Palestine" as he burned during the incident, which lasted about a minute before law enforcement officers extinguished the flames at about 1pm. The man appeared to be in military uniform and identified himself as "an active duty member of the U.S. Air Force." Air Force spokesperson Ann Stefanek confirmed via email Sunday evening that "an active duty Airman was involved in today's incident." The Israeli Embassy said in a statement that none of its staff was injured and all were safe. The latest: The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said in a statement Monday that after first responders arrived on the scene the man was "transported by DC Fire and EMS to a local hospital where he later died." Police identified the man as Aaron Bushnell, 25, of San Antonio, Texas. An investigation of the incident is ongoing, MPD said. In the video of the incident, Bushnell said he would "no longer be complicit in genocide," which the Israeli military was accused of committing in Gaza in an International Court of Justice case brought by South Africa. "I am about to engage in an extreme act of protest." The MPD said in a post to X that its Explosive Ordnance Disposal was called to the 3500 block on International Drive in northwest D.C. "in reference to a suspicious vehicle that may be connected to the individual," but it later reported that no hazardous materials had been found. You can find every episode of this show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or YouTube. The conversation covers various topics, including the small world of ultra running, epic DNFs at Badwater, the history of bib number seven, running with sons, and the importance of staying healthy. Running is a team sport, and having a supportive crew is essential for success. Changing the language of self-talk can help overcome challenges and maintain a positive mindset. The toughest moments in a race can often be overcome by focusing on the next sunrise. Adaptive athletes face unique challenges, and races can be more accommodating by providing clear communication and support. Motivation can come from wanting to be a role model for others and pushing oneself to achieve new goals. Ultra running is a small world where runners often have connections and acquaintances with each other. Bob Becker's epic DNF at Badwater is a legendary story in the ultra running community. The bib number seven holds a special significance in the history of Badwater. Running with sons and witnessing their progress can be a source of pride and inspiration. (Spoiler alert:  she absolutely was.  We just wanted to see if she thought she was at the time!) 03:50       Reflections on the parallels with Monika Georgieva's trailblazing role as a female within the infantry corps (check out our episode with Monika back in Season 2 Episode 3) 06:45       Jaz's role as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician – bomb disposal!  The pressure of the role – physical and psychological. Here is Dr. Fuller's Bio from his website https://theoldgrayman.com My name is T.C. Fuller. I am originally from California. I grew up in some occasionally rough places, in a shattered family, and was out on my own at 16. I put myself through prep school and college, got a degree and a Regular Army commission as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry, then headed off into the world. After my initial training at Fort Benning, Georgia, with all the “usual” infantry officer schools, I was off to the races. Over the next decade, I served in a variety of jobs. Most notably, I was an mechanized infantry platoon leader in the First Gulf War, then an Explosive Ordnance Disposal company commander twice, first in the Sinai Desert, Egypt as part of the Multinational Force and Observers, then at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. After that, I was fortunate enough to be selected as a Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). I served in various capacities in the FBI, working just about every investigative area in the Bureau's jurisdiction at one time or another during my 20 year career. Lots of street level criminal investigations, several years of counter-terrorism investigations, and even the occasional counter-intelligence case. There were other jobs in the FBI as well, including interrogator in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, time doing all kinds of stuff in Afghanistan, Firearms Instructor (both in the field and at the FBI Academy), Defensive Tactics Instructor, and Congressional Liaison up on Capitol Hill. In my spare time, I added a Master's of Education and a Doctorate of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies, as well as publishing a book under a nom de plume. Once I retired, I opened my own firm, doing private investigations, executive protection, and consulting (www.thehorusgroup.net). I have lived and worked in all kinds of places, doing all kinds of things. Importantly, that includes living and working across the U.S. and overseas, including war zones. And I have survived this long not only based on luck, but by being a Gray Man. By passing unnoticed when possible, seeing trouble before it sees me and leaving, escaping trouble when it finds me despite my best efforts, and, when all else has failed, by forcing the issue in my favor.I know what has worked for me, what has allowed me to survive long enough to earn my gray, to become an Old Gray Man. In 1897, the United States was mired in the worst economic depression that the country had yet endured. So when all the newspapers announced gold was to be found in wildly enriching quantities at the Klondike River region of the Yukon, a mob of economically desperate Americans swarmed north. Within weeks tens of thousands of them were embarking from western ports to throw themselves at some of the harshest terrain on the planet--in winter yet--woefully unprepared, with no experience at all in mining or mountaineering. It was a mass delusion that quickly proved deadly: avalanches, shipwrecks, starvation, murder. In Stampede: Gold Fever and Disaster in the Klondike (Doubleday, 2021), author Brian Castner tells a relentlessly driving story of the gold rush through the individual experiences of the iconic characters who endured it. A young Jack London, who would make his fortune but not in gold. Colonel Samuel Steele, who tried to save the stampeders from themselves. The notorious gangster Soapy Smith, goodtime girls and desperate miners, Skookum Jim, and the hotel entrepreneur Belinda Mulrooney. The unvarnished tale of this mass migration is always striking, revealing the amazing truth of what people will do for a chance to be rich. Welcome to Montrose Fresh, from The Montrose Daily Press. It's FridayMarch 12th, and we're here with local news, events, announcements, jobs, and more that matter to us here in Western Colorado.    Today - The US Army took possession of a substantial amount of military-grade explosives that were found in Montrose County.   Today's episode is brought to you by Elevate Internet. Give them a call for more information at 844-386-8744 or visit them at www.elevateinternet.com.   Now, our feature story...   On Wednesday, the Montrose County Sheriff Gene Lillard reported that The US Army took possession of a substantial amount of military-grade explosives found in Montrose County.   So far, no arrests have been made. The Army is reportedly eyeing a person of interest.   It all began last month, when a person using a metal detector discovered military-style containers.   Inside the metal containers, responding deputies found C-4 or similar explosives, all wrapped in cellophane.   The County Sheriff emphasized that it was a substantial amount, but right now they're unable to provide the exact amount given it's an ongoing investigation.   But Lillard did say that it's possible there was a U.S. Army soldier involved in this. It appeared to have been stolen from an Army base, either here in the U.S. or overseas.   The explosives were found separate from blasting caps or other ignition devices. They were accessible for use and illegal to possess.   Lillard noted that it was military-grade explosive and you cannot even possess dynamite and blasting caps without proper authorization.    Upon discovering the explosives, the MCSO contacted the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit based at Fort Carson, in Colorado Springs. Lillard said a team from that unit took custody of the explosives and notified the Criminal Investigation Command who took charge of the investigation.   It remains a big concern, so to stay up to date on this story, or read more, visit us at Montrosepress.com.   -   Now, some local history. This week's local history is brought to you by England Fence. England Fence is family owned and operated, and they're ready to help you build your dream fence, archway, gate, or deck. Give them a call at 970-249-4430, or head over to their website englandfence.com.   The Townsend house in Montrose was constructed in 1882 by Thomas B. Townsend, an Englishman who moved to the area to pursue investments in mines.   Townsend was also a co-founder of the Montrose County Bank. The home is one of the oldest permanent residences in the valley. It's also an excellent example of the American Victorian style of architecture.  -   And finally, before we go we'd like to remember the life of Charolotte Lewis. Charolotte was born in Memphis, Texas in 1934.   She accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior when she was 5 years old. In 1944, at the age of 10 she dedicated her life to serve Christ. She loved the church and was always active in helping anyway she could. Charolotte delighted the congregation by singing specials in church and participating in Christian skits. She was even known as “The Bread Lady” because she always baked fresh bread and gave it to visitors of the church along with scriptures. Charolotte also taught Sunday school, worked at Vacation Bible School, played the piano in church, worked in Christ's Kitchen, helped with outreaches, and much more. The Lord was always number one in her life. She had a heart of gold and loved serving other people.   Charolotte married Wayne Lewis, the love of her life, in  1951. They had four children whom they loved very much and raised with lots of love and laughter.    When Charolotte was in her 40s she went to UNM in Gallup, New Mexico, and became a registered nurse. She was the oldest student in her class, yet ranked second at graduation. Her husband Wayne was mayor of Gallup at the time of graduation and got to present her with her diploma. She worked in Gallup for a surgical doctor until Wayne retired. Years later she became a hospice nurse, which was fitting for her because of her big kind heart.   After they retired, they traveled around in their motorhome and had a great time with friends and family, seeing the USA, sightseeing, meeting new people, camping, and fishing. Then, in 1992 they moved to Montrose, and joined Rosemont Baptist Church just a week after they moved there.   Charolotte's strongest attribute was her sense of humor and her ability to find humor in any situation. She kept people entertained with her quick wit. She loved to embroider. She probably gave away 1000 cup towels. She also was in several bridge clubs at one time and loved her bridge friends.    Charolotte was a member of the Montrose Women's Club and participated in the All Women's Spring Renewal each year.    She will be greatly missed. Thank you for taking a moment with us today to remember and celebrate Charolotte's life.   -   That's all for today, thank you for listening! As a bomb technician in Afghanistan, Johnny “Joey” Jones experienced the worst possible scenario in an IED-related incident. It resulted in the loss of both of his legs above the knee and severe damage to his right forearm. In this week's Team Never Quit episode, he describes in detail the sequence of events that led to that horrific event. But that event didn't stop him from dedicating his life to the service of other veterans and their families as well as serving as a Fox News contributor. After two combat deployments and eight years of active service in the Marine Corps, Johnny “Joey” Jones live his life to the fullest.   In this episode you will hear:   “Get it right, or people die” – that's a good way to train. When I leaned back [from the wall] I stepped on an IED that was there; it threw me through the air. It was truly an amazing experience. There was no noise. Everything just turned into a giant cloud. My right arm was fileted open and the bones were broken, so when I reached up, my hand stayed in my lap. I remember looking at it. It didn't hurt for like an hour. My legs were completely gone, from the knee down. You gotta stop the bleeding if you want to live. I learned at that moment, I didn't know the Lord's Prayer. I lose my legs; other guys lose their life. TNT won't cut you open; it's gonna pick you up and throw you. C4 may not move you two feet, but it's gonna cut right through you. I deployed this really good-shaped single Marine with no responsibilities, and I came home bandaged up on all four limbs with a son and a girlfriend. I just never accepted that life's responsibilities were going to be any different for me because I got blown up. Anything worth doing is worth doing right and anything worthwhile is never easy. If I can find a way to be in control of my destiny, it's game on. I might not succeed at everything, but I'll be there to find out. I'm trying to kill this deer in my yard, so I've got an AR at each level of my house, so if he pops up, I'm gonna take him out. Get up, get over it, get going.

Following a fairly short stint and multiple deployments with the Navy not long after 9/11, Mike Mednansky felt a calling to a military occupation much more technical, and challenging than the one he had in the Navy. He decided to go out for Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) school - one of the most dangerous, but most rewarding jobs in the military. EOD technicians are some of the most highly trained, highly focused, technically surgical servicemembers on the battlefield. It takes nerves of steel to perform their job, and for good reason, as one slip-up could cost lives, or at a minimum, serious injury. Mike ended up transferring from the Navy to the Army in order to attend EOD School. Once out of school he went back to deployments, this time as an EOD tech. It was on what would be his final deployment, that an IED he was attempting to gather evidence from, partially detonated in his hands, causing serious injury. It would ultimately lead to Mike's medical retirement, but not his exit from the EOD community, as he continues to instruct Special Forces soldiers heading downrange. Staring down a very domesticated life path she had no interest in following, Mary Dague decided to join the Army, a few years after 9/11. Desiring a military job that was both dynamic and challenging, she signed up for Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD). She loved being an EOD soldier and showed great promise as a young bomb tech on her team while deployed in combat. But it only took one critical incident to end all of that. On November 4, 2007, her military career came to an end when she literally bear hugged an IED that her team was disarming, when it became unstable in their vehicle, in an attempt to save her teammates' lives. The explosion took both of her arms, but never damaged her spirit and the strength she now calls upon to live each day and inspire and help others who have reached a low point in their lives. She has handled her injuries with astounding resilience and best of all, a rock solid sense of humor.
