We're very happy to have gotten to sit down with cinematographer and son of Robert Altman -- Robert Reed "Bobby" Altman. He shares with us stories of joining his dad on the production of Nashville, his early life travelling the world with his family, joining the camera department and working on everything from the Popeye set in Malta, to working on the art department for Quintet and 3 Women, OC and Stiggs stories of King Sunny Ade, working on Trixie and Return Engagement with Alan Rudolph, Altman and Demme's friendship. There was just so many awesome stories and we're glad we could be there to hear them and then record them for you to also hear! Love to all the bobbleheads out there, we'll return on JUNE 4TH to kick off our new series doing a deep-dive on the works of Jonathan Demme. Until then, stay cool, love one another. King Sunny Ade was, in many ways, the inspiration for what would become Afropop Worldwide. And he was by no means an inspiration only to us! Many fans in America first got hooked on Afropop (and African music in general) through the landmark 1982-83 tour by King Sunny Ade and his African Beats: The propulsive polyrhythms of traditional drums mixed with sophisticated guitar arrangements and pedal steel were like nothing we had ever heard. Topped by graceful choreography and the beaming presence of the “Chairman” himself, the effect was totally intoxicating. In this program, we travel to Lagos to talk to people there who help us fill in the picture of King Sunny Ade's earlier career in the 1960s and '70s. KSA also granted Afropop Worldwide a three-hour interview. We'll hear his stories and some classic recordings. Featured in the show are highlights from a sublime acoustic concert Ade and the African Beats gave at Joe's Pub in New York City. Produced by Sean Barlow APWW #468

With music a proven border-crossing phenomenon, musicians are the world's ambassadors, setting the stage for sonic and social mutual respect, collaborations, and partnerships. One such story is that of the song "Way Maker" and the artist who created it, Nigerian vocalist and songwriter Sinach. The song, originally made popular in the United States by Leeland, has crisscrossed the globe repeatedly, becoming a Christian worship music standard for many cultures. Our guests discuss how a song reaches such ubiquity and what it takes to steward a song that loves to wander into hearts and voices anywhere and everywhere. The conversation (recorded at Nashville's Sound Emporium Studios) begins with a song by Nigerian musician King Sunny Ade, one of Charlie's West African musical influences. In turn, Sinach reveals some of her American music influences. Throughout the episode, Charlie weaves the story of border-crossing and neighbor-love as a way of being, revealing the musical and spiritual interplay between people, the places they call home, and Jesus—the Way Maker of the Christian faith. Integrity Music executives, Vice President Mark Nicholas and Director of A&R Gilbert Nanlohy figure in prominently, including a discussion of Gilbert's Indonesian musical heritage, and Mark's perspective on the community-partnership focus of Integrity Music's global mission. The episode wraps with Charlie checking off an item on his bucket list—sitting down to his Fender Rhodes electric piano for an impromptu jam on one of Sinach's new songs, "Victory Is My Name." Nashville meets Nigeria, indeed! In closing, a reminder that our show theme, "Sound of the Room," performed by Charlie and bassist John Patitucci, is now available in its full-length version, everywhere music is streamed. The Nigerian Bar Association Conference, held between August 25th and 30th, focused on Getting it Right; Charting the Course for Nigeria's Nation Building. The event featured Habib Oloalomi Oyegbile, popularly known as Portable or Mr. Zeh, who performed his famous song Zazoo Zeh. Many people were not happy about the presence of Portable, as the Nigeria Bar Association is Nigeria's foremost professional membership organization and Africa's most influential network of legal practitioners. The Nigerian entertainment industry has a diverse range of artists, including Timi Dakolo, Olamide, Asake, Asa, Ebenezer Obey, King Sunny Ade, and many more. However, the presence of Portable raises questions about respect for institutions and the relationship between the artist and the institution. Some argue that the presence of the singer may pass a wrong message to the public, while others question whether the institution should be respected.Listen here...

All Hail King Sunny Ade. World beats take center stage in this one as the boys learn the pure joy of Jùjú music and its' importance in African culture.
Enjoy An Album with Liam Withnail & Christopher Macarthur-Boyd
When Bob Marley died in 1981, Island Records wanted to repeat the success they found with the reggae star by marketing King Sunny Ade as ‘The African Bob Marley'. It didn't really work, but the attempt brought Nigeria's unique style of afrobeat - “juju music” - to the international spotlight. Compiled in 2003 by Shanachie Records, ‘The Best Of The Classic Years' documents the pre-Island period of Ade's career (1969-1974) before the watered down attempts at crossover success - lyrics entirely in Yoruba, seventeen-minute long jams, and rawer production. It's also the 464th Greatest Album of All Time, according to Rolling Stone magazine. Christopher and Liam use the record as a springboard to discuss everything from the Yoruban talking drum, William Onyeabor, Ebo Taylor, Ghanian highlife, the difference between a nightclub and a hotel in Nigeria, doing the washing-up, the musical tastes of the British royal family, and the filmography of Richard Gere. All that and more, plus an even-handed installment of Secret Posho, on episode 36 of Enjoy An Album. Enjoy!
This episode starts with Gboyega and Nelson talking about timeless music and that opens up the conversation on the influence of King Sunny Ade and his peers. His drive from being a star in Africa to being a global phenomenon. With his sound representing the Nigerian and African culture on the world stage like Miriam Makeba and Manu Dibango. The hosts then talk about the Sierra Leone star that was referred to as a musical legend by his countrymen. The person the two leading acts have in common is Moelogo - Nigerian singer and songwriter sampling both legends with some really smart genre switching.
Bob and Mike play a wide diversity of artists, including '80s Dutch anarcho punk band Rondos, Brazilian legend Gilberto Gil, Nigerian juju legend King Sunny Ade, Korean rock legend Shin Joong Hyun & Yup Juns, new music from Squirrel Flower, and a recent song from Apache Sun.

As broadcast July 14, 2021 with extra snacks for podcast flyers. Tonight we head to Lagos, Nigeria to have a taste of the old & new in a country that never stops when it comes to creating some of the best tunes on the planet. From Fela to Burna Boy, Tony Allen to Tiwa Savage, King Sunny Ade to Rema, there is never a shortage of tunes to bump in this amazingly complex country in West Africa. But the big news tonight is the return of our girfron Lizz Kalo, who's back after a three week absence that made Danno the lonely weird middle aged dude on the plane for the last few trips. As broadcast July 2, 2021 with mega miles of extra digital legroom for podcast flyers. On this very special presentation of The Drop, we welcome multi-instrumentalist & singer-songwriter Kamen Ross to take over hour two of the show. For the first time in his career, he is dropping a solo album in September called "I Dreamt We Fell In Love," and the lead single to that called "Yellow Rose" drops next week Wednesday. Not only did we get an exclusive premiere for that, but we also got to spin a track on the show that won't drop until the album does in full just over two months from now! Kamen's playlist tonight is all about the timelessness & familiarity of certain sounds in songs, even ones that are relatively new, and his interview was a great talk about the songs that inspire him, the messages that never age, and memories from his childhood. This show is not to be missed with this gifted musician!#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Force One Network – Spirit (Does Anybody Care?)King Sunny Ade – SijuadeEbo Taylor feat Uhuru-Yenzu – You Need LoveFela Kuti – GentlemanShin Joong-hyun & The Men – Beautiful Rivers & Mountains Part II (37:35)Eydis Evensen – BrotinKim English – Learn 2 Luv (Francois K Atmospheric Mood Mix)Them – It's All Over Now, Baby BlueIris DeMent – Let The Mystery BeDan Deacon – When I Was Done DyingDJ Shadow feat Little Dragon – Scale It BackPrefuse 73 feat Sam Prekop – Last Night Part III (65:41)Kamen Ross - Very Distant Starlight Dakota Slim - Wasted Bones Bat for Lashes - What's a Girl to Do? If you don’t know Paul Epworth’s name, you’ll certainly know his music, as he’s produced for the likes of Adele, Florence and the Machine and Rihanna. He asks 100 gecs, Arlo Parks and Dave Okumu about working with analogue equipment in a digital world, studio disasters, ideas that evaporate as they take too long to capture, and the difference between making your own music as opposed to making it for other people. Futuristic pop duo 100 gecs's debut album, 1000 gecs, captivated fans all over the world, including Charli XCX, Rico Nasty and Fall Out Boy, and they’ve been described as a “brain-melting, genre-crushing vision of pop’s future”. Arlo Parks is a 20-year-old musician and poet who is one of the most exciting artists coming out of London right now. She is redefining intelligent pop-soul with her thoughtful, confessional music that has seen her described as "the voice of Generation Z". And Dave Okumu is a producer and songwriter, known for fronting the Mercury Prize-nominated band The Invisible. He is one of the most sought-after collaborators in music, having worked with Adele, Amy Winehouse, Yoko Ono, King Sunny Ade, Radiohead’s Ed O’Brien, and Tony Allen.
The Gallop, the rhythm, the beat the pulse. A driving pulsating rhythm that makes the body move and the mind expand. Music in Africa has always been used to alleviate the pain and suffering of the common folk. Held under the thumb of military governments, foreign oppressors and self inflicted wounds. This music the Afro-Beat comes from the drum. An apparatus that has been used over centuries to communicate. It was used in Africa during colonial times. They were used during diaspora on the ships as the slaves were traded amongst the islands, they were used in Congo square when music was played outside and this non-verbal communication sparked an identity in these Americas. My guest today is a world renown bass player and percussionist. He grew up in Nigeria, amidst the forests and animals and listened to countless hours of shortwave radio taking in jazz, blues, rock and other world music. It is no surprise that my guest was at the center of this blending of genres with Victor Olaiya , Fela Kuti and Joni Hastruup in Monomono. My guest plays hypnotic baselines. The kind that have you rocking back and forth, free of clutter and chatter and distractions. This vibration carries into your soul and naturally it emboldens you to be yourself. He came to the states in 1985 with King Sunny Ade with intentions to preserve the rhythms of his people and promote a new generation of western players in the age of digitization. He now lives in the Bay Area and keeps the pocket with the Afro Groove Connexion, West African Highlife Band and the Nigerian Brothers. To mainstream elements in the neighboring countries of Nigeria and Benin, the Kalakuta Republic, musician Fela Kuti's commune, was off-limits and the subject of rumors and innuendo. Raised in the Celestial Church of Christ, but inspired by the sounds of high life, juju, funk, and rhythm and blues - and Afrobeat - the genre that Fela Kuti revolutionized, Leon Ligan-Majek taught himself the guitar and crossed the border into Nigeria from Benin as a teenager. He took shelter in the only place he knew that offered the musical opportunities he was seeking, not to mentione room and board, the Lagos branch of Celestial. But eventually he would decide to enter Kalakuta. Produced by Matt Elzweig Story Told by Leon Ligan-Majek: Leon Ligan-Majek, or Kaleta as he’s known to his fans, got his start as a guitarist for King Sunny Ade and Fela Kuti in Nigeria. Originally from Benin, he’s been living in New York for decades and tours the country with several bands including Zozo Afrobeat, which he leads, as well as Akoya, and Super Yamba Band. To hear the rest of Nigeria 70 visit. https://soundcloud.com/blanket/sets/nigeria70-the-documentary Produced By ▶ https://soundcloud.com/blanket ▶https://soundcloud.com/strut Nigeria 70 is an audio programme that introduces us to Nigeria’s vibrant and flourishing music scene in the 1960s and 70s. Produced by Sue Bowerman - founder of Blanket Productions, in collaboration with Strut Records; this documentary features an astonishing collection of interviews and footages with musical pioneers who helped shape the history of Nigerian music; including but not limiting to Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, John Collins, Jimmy Solanke, Tony Allen, Ebenezer Ober, Segun Bucknor, the Lidaju Sisters, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and more. In this particular audio journey, we learn that Nigeria’s deeply rooted music scene is emphasized through musical legends who created sounds like highlife jazz, afrobeat, and juju music; all by and for the people. Prior to Naija’s booming scene of highlife music, the 1950s carried social music known as Asiko - a genre migrating from Sierra Leone and Cameroon that constituted drums and voice groups. Brass instruments were later introduced by musicians who trained to play in the Nigerian army; who later on shared their knowledge of playing such instruments with students across Nigerian schools. At the same time, Nigerians who had travelled abroad had been returning back to their home country with their newly acquired musical abilities involving the saxophone and trumpet. Consequently, these returning professionals formed “elitist” bands, which increased the pressure and competition amongst aspiring local Nigerian musicians as described on episode 03. As the 1960s begun, figures like E.T. Mensah and John Collins travelled to Nigeria to partake in the country’s booming music scene. Mensah entered Nigerian night life with a musical advantage - he had “The Tempos”, a band which he led, that included a trumpet, saxophone, electric guitar, upright bass, drums, and percussion. As Nigeria 70 documents, Mensah & The Tempos’ productions were common meter tunes influenced by the church; and consequently, this encouraged local Nigerian artists to split from the church and return to their villages to create their own music. This is described to be the most prevalent time for the popularity of highlife music, as it represented progress in the identity and nationality of West Africa; while also emphasizing and celebrating Nigerian history, culture, and morality. High life was and still remains the music of happiness and freedom; the music which prevails the West African coast.
In the third episode of Season Two of "Dave's Old Interview Tapes," IndyStar reporter David Lindquist and guest Ryan Hickey (DJ Helicon and co-founder of the Oranje festival) revisit a 2001 interview with Phish vocalist-guitarist Trey Anastasio. Highlights include Anastasio’s definition of a successful concert and his admiration for African musicians King Sunny Ade and Fela Kuti.

Chubby! on Facebook: www.facebook.com/chubbyrecords @miruga The real name is Yoshiki Tsuchiya.. and he is from Suzaka City, Nagano, Japan. Miruga is man accustomed to remaining in the background like a "Lentigo". He follow's the Underground Deep House Scene like a little shadow maybe because he still believes "DJ must be like a Lentigo." His main policy is a non-musician style. It is true that he have produced music & released some music. But, please bring back to memory of late 70's punk scene. Were there any musician's at that scene? For sure, every punk rockers played their instruments, but It is an entirely different matter than "Was It Music that they played?" This is still no small issue for him. Because an artist must have something to tell someone about something. So he wants to say that there is no importance on skill as compared to "soul & spirit". The importance of expression is still on enthusiasm for expression. He still loves the music made by strong enthusiasm whatever the level of performing technique or skill. So, He loves the music rooted from Chicago & Detroit deeply. He knows one big thing " Soul Is Everything". Enjoy my love for the music ... Playlist 01. Rufus & Chaka Khan - Stop On By 02. [APWW PGM #317] [Originally aired in 1998] Juju maestro Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey recently made a rare U.S. tour in the summer of 2013 which made us want to hear more! In this program, Chief Obey breaks down his band’s sound instrument by instrument—traditional percussion, horns, guitars–which makes his version of juju all the more enjoyable. And he tells us stories behind some of his hit songs. Also telling stories is the other maestro of Nigerian juju, the legendary King Sunny Ade. Continuing our celebration of Afropop’s 25th anniversary, we pay special tribute to KSA whose celebrated 1982-83 U.S. tour played a huge role in inspiring Afropop producer Sean Barlow to develop Afropop Worldwide.
[APWW PGM #468] [Originally aired in 2005] King Sunny Adé was, in many ways, the inspiration for what would become Afropop Worldwide. And he was by no means only an inspiration to us! Many fans in America first got hooked on Afropop (and African music in general) through the landmark 1982-83 tour by King Sunny Ade and his African Beats: the propulsive polyrhythms of traditional drums mixed with sophisticated guitar arrangements and pedal steel were like nothing they had ever heard. Topped by graceful choreography and the beaming presence of the “Chairman” himself, the effect was totally intoxicating. In this program, we travel to Lagos to talk to people there who help us fill in the picture of King Sunny Ade’s earlier career in the 1960s and '70s. KSA also granted Afropop Worldwide a three-hour interview. We’ll hear his stories and some classic recordings. Featured in the show are highlights from a sublime acoustic concert Ade and the African Beats gave at Joe’s Pub in New York City.
