So we've known since the 1970s, that the number of social connections that people have and the quality of those connections can predict longevity and general health across the lifespan. So people who not only have more connections, but also feel really supported and understood by the people around them, do tend to live longer. And that's just been replicated hundreds of times. So the evidence base is really unquestionable, in my opinion. And we know that it at least equals the other lifestyle factors that we take for granted now, things like obesity, or remaining at a healthy weight, how much exercise you do, whether you smoke, whether you drink, whether you take medication for your hypertension - all of those things we accept as being important for our health and longevity. But when you look at the effect sizes, they've been measured in these huge studies, you find that people's social connection is just as important. I found that really surprising just how important it was." On Meaning "It was very clear to me that social connections are important, as C .S. Lewis said, for providing meaning in life. C.S. Lewis claimed that they didn't have any survival value though, that friendship wasn't important for survival. And what this research really showed is that actually, it does give us meaning in our life, but it's also incredibly important just to live a long and healthy life. So, I wanted to try to do my part in raising this awareness and let people know, not just how important that is, but then how they can overcome those psychological barriers to achieve that connection that we all deep down really crave." On Cognitive Biases and Social Connection "So that's one bias.

I have to put in context, and Arthur Schopenhauer observed that all truth passes through three levels. First, it's ridicule, second, it's violently opposed, third, it's accepted as being self -evident. Such a truth has emerged in our lifetime. It informs us that we exist as a tiny fragment of an immensely larger interlocking pole, which all the parts are interconnected and depend upon each other for survival. Simply put, everything's connected to everything else. We exist not separately, but in communion with all other living things. Life's an interrelated, interdependent phenomenon. Everything's in relationship. It's the nature of universe, it's the nature of the reality in which we exist. Like it or not, reality has behavioral demands. That is, if you want to stick around, if you want to live, if you want to continue on the journey, those behavioral demands can be summarized in seven words. Be healthy, be kind, respect the environment. Each one of us is like a cell in the body of humanity. The health of all of us taken together in terms of the health of humanity and the health of our civilization." On Updating Beliefs "The question is, how do we reduce ignorance and suffering, expand knowledge and justice? Einstein observed that we can't solve our problems from the same level of thinking which they originated. So it begs the question, what level of thinking are we at?

Don't drift into your retirement. Design it. Join us in the next Design Your New Life in Retirement group program starting April 26. __________________________ Today's Building Block: Wellness What will your life in retirement really be like? Will you flourish or languish? Our guest today is Corey Keyes, a renowned expert and author of the groundbreaking book Languishing: How to Feel Alive Again in a World That Wears Us Down. Corey explains what languishing is and the five essential "vitamins" for flourishing, derived from extensive research, offering practical strategies to improve well-being. Corey Keyes joins us from North Carolina. _________________________ Bio Corey Keyes is professor emeritus of Sociology at Emory University in Atlanta, GA where he held the Winship Distinguished Research Professorship. He was a member of the prestigious MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Successful Aging. He has been called on to participate in several U.S. National Academies of Science initiatives – “The Future of Human Healthspan” and improving national statistics to measure recovery from mental illness. His research introduced the concepts of social well-being, flourishing, languishing, the two continua model of mental health and illness, and his work is being used to prevent mental illness via the promotion of positive (flourishing) mental health. He has been selected to give several honorary lectureships, including the Dorosin Memorial Lecture for the National College Health Association, The Chesley Lecture on Aging at Minnesota State University, and the Anita Spenser Lectureship in Clinical Behavioral Sciences at McMaster University. _________________________ For More on Corey Keyes Languishing: How to Feel Alive Again in a World That Wears Us Down _________________________ Podcast Episodes You May Like The Mindful Body – Ellen Langer The Self-Healing Mind – Gregory Scott Brown, M.D. Chatter & Your Inner Voice – Ethan Kross The Power of Fun – Catherine Price ______________________ Wise Quotes On Flourishing and Languishing "....the good news is that flourishing is at its peak during what most of us would consider the first decade of retirement. So roughly between 60 to 74, it is at its peak and before you retire and throughout your adult working phase, it starts out pretty low in early to late twenties, but it's steadily increases and increases so that as you get settled into your career and become senior and established, you tend to on average leave your career on a high note. You're flourishing, but it gets better. And that's the point I want to make, that it's the first decade at least of retirement. People are doing really well on average. It's the problems that come with if we live long enough. And by that I mean roughly past the age of 75 plus and more and more of us are. We see a downturn in flourishing and an increase in languishing towards the end of life." On Activities That Promote Flourishing "... five of the activities stood out among people who were flourishing, who they did more of the following. They engaged in more forms of helping behavior. It might be volunteering, helping people, or even living your purpose. Go out there and help someone or help something in the world and make it better. The second vitamin, that flourishers did more of was that they connected, prioritizing warm, trusting relationships. Relationships where they had a sense of belonging, where they were part of a community and relationships where they mattered. And by that I meant they were needed. And in my measurement of flourishing, the sense of contributing worth and value to the world is baked into flourishing. So the second thing they did more of was connect around warmth, trust, belonging, and mattering. The third was they were very active in learning something new and prioritizing personal growth.

#PeterGrandich: #Gold Has Rebounded, #Yet Miners Still Languish Both gold and silver sold off sharply in October following Jerome Powell's commentary at the Fed's September policy meeting, but have rebounded in the past few weeks amidst geopolitical and treasury supply concerns. Yet despite significantly higher precious metals prices today than a year ago, the mining sector has continued to struggle through what has become one of the most severe miner bear markets in most of our lifetimes. So in today's conversation with investor and analyst Peter Grandich, Peter talks about the reasons why the gold price in particular continues to push up against the $2,000 per ounce level. And also explains why despite the pricing in the mining sector, he believes there's still significant value in the space, and when he thinks we will finally see a turnaround. Peter talks about the fundamentals facing the mining sector, especially in a 'green' environment that calls for significantly larger amounts of a variety metal, and how he expects that dynamic to affect the miners, and especially the juniors, in the months and years ahead. Chelsea lost at Newcastle to go into the break 8th, having lost 3 in a row whilst Spurs had to fight back again with a last minute winner, this time against Leeds who took the lead three times in the game and left with nothing. Ep. 70 - Zack Hansen (Languish, North, Realize). In this episode I talk with Zack Hansen of the Tucson bands - Languish, North, Realize. Languish is a death/grind band and just released their 3rd album “Feeding The Flames Of Annihilation” through Prosthetic Records. From the bands Earsplit PR bio “We are beyond thrilled to unleash 'Feeding The Flames Of Annihilation' to the world. We spent two and a half years in development writing and refining this record throughout a global pandemic. Each song saw an unprecedented level of scrutiny and editing and we think it shows on the album from everything from the lyrics to the most minute drum part. Thank you to our label Prosthetic Records for being with us the whole way and supporting this album one-hundred percent. We hope everyone enjoys it.” "Feeding The Flames Of Annihilation" was self-produced at Homewrecker Studios in Tucson with bassist Ryan Bram engineering and mixing, before the album was handed to Brad Boatright at Audiosiege for mastering, the record completed with cover art by Matthew Mutterperl. We also talk about living in Tucson and their local metal scene. Zack also plays in the doom/sludge band North who have been on hiatus and the industrial metal band Realize. After spending two days speaking to a groups of builders and contractors, there is an unspoken question that most have and is revealed when we begin to talk about the chaos they are feeling. What most builders and contractors want to ask, but struggle to open up about is simply, “how do I manage my small business successfully”. They know what features the clients' desire. They know how good structures are built, and yet they quietly live with an inadequacy of building a structure of their business with the same integrity, the same stability by which they build their projects. In the volatile market environment we are in now, material delays, pricing increases, and employee challenges, how is a business owner to manage the business so that the business doesn't end up managing them? A journey back into the annals of history can help us gain perspective on our current reality. Where there is no vision, people become detached, scattered, and alone. It's proverbial…it's a natural law. If you have written and regularly communicate vision, then you have clarity, you have direction, you have aim = clarity and purpose. If you DO NOT have written and regularly communicate vision, then you have confusion, chaos, and aimlessness = frustration. You cannot manage what you do not see. You cannot see what is not laid out plainly in front of you or your team. The first element every business owner must have written and installed in their business to have a business they manage instead of a business that manages them is a written, detailed snapshot of the future of their business. In short, this is a written vision story. A business without a written, communicated vision, is simply an idea in an entrepreneur's head that people are forced to gamble to be true. Lacking a vision is like a transit bus with a full load of passengers driving particularly nowhere. Where there is no vision, we run out of gas at the worst possible times and places. In order to have a compelling vision, you must have the 3 RPMs of great leadership: repetition, predictability, and meaning. Repetition is the mother of all learning as made evidence by Aristotle's oft visited quote, “we are what we repeatedly do.” Predictability seems mundane, uninteresting, and boring…but predictability is the lifeblood of scale and delegation. Meaning is the communication of significance. Money is not meaning. The best predictor of engaged team members has more to do with highly communicated meaning (vision, mission, and values) than it does with the accumulation of more and more money. The second awareness to managing a business that does not manage you is committing to hiring humans, and not playing chess with “human resources”. There is a word that is being suggested in the public discussion of psychology right now that is worth taking a look at…the word LANGUISH. To languish is to “lose or lack vitality… being forced to remain in an unpleasant place or situation” Author and Organizational Psychologist Adam Grant says it's not burnout, because we still have physical fuel, and it's not depression because we still have hope. What is causing us to feel weak and withered, to feel LANGUISHED? DISTRACTION Translation of distraction? We are willfully allowing ourselves to be pulled apart… pulled away. William Danforth, former Chairman of Purina, wrote in 1953 of the power of a good, distraction-free walk… "(Walking) is the best medicine! This is not only the best but cheap and pleasant to take. It suits all ages and constitutions. It is patented by infinite wisdom, sealed with a signet divine. It cures cold feet, hot heads, pale faces, feeble lungs, and bad tempers. If two or three take it together, it has still more striking effects. It has often been known to reconcile enemies, settle matrimonial quarrels, and bring reluctant parties to a state of double blessedness. This medicine never fails...and you have it in perfection as prepared in the great laboratory of Nature." When was the last time you went on a walk, with no distractions? Give it a try and see if you don't begin to gain a clarity that you are finding it hard to discover of late. Human resources is the discipline of managing distracted people so that the company comes out on top. Hiring humans in contrast means understanding the thing that most hinders us from living out our skillsets, and providing the best possible environment, the best “stage” by which each person can thrive, leading to the thriving of the organization. When hiring humans, in a humane way, we invite them into a collective that breeds culture. Culture is a biology term! Culture is not lunch on Fridays, soda fountains in the break room, bean bag chairs, and unicorn rides for the kids The ingredients you put into your culture are the ingredients you grow out for all to enjoy… or not. The culture you have is a DIRECT result of the ingredients you have planted. If you like it, keep planting. If you don't like it, plant something different. Either way, YOU MUST GET IN THE FIELD AND PLANT WITH Repetition, Predictability, and Meaning. To create a business you manage instead of a business that manages you, it is crucial to commit to a written vision, a process for hiring humans, and planting the seeds of desired culture; all with repetition, predictability, and meaning.
The FC crew break down Manchester United's heavy defeat to Liverpool and question whether a new manager has the capabilities to fix the club. Plus, the panel discuss Liverpool's chances of capturing a historic quadruple, how Real Madrid were able to run away with LaLiga, and predict what the outcome will be between Chelsea and Arsenal.
It's not unusual for our practice to languish at times. “Languish” means to be or become weak or feeble, to lose vigor or vitality, to be subjected to neglect or prolonged inactivity. How do we recognize when our practice is languishing and revitalize it, without falling into the dualistic trap of striving? How do we avoid the trap of striving without then falling into the opposite trap of complacency?
Life and business necessarily intersect. In the last 13 weeks, we've seen births, divorce, death, war, inflation, new hires, sales records, con artists, cancer diagnosis, treatments, remissions, birthdays, renewed vision, record monthly revenue, and record monthly expenses. There is a word that is being suggested in the public discussion of psychology right now that is worth taking a look at… the word LANGUISH. To languish is to “lose or lack vitality… being forced to remain in an unpleasant place or situation” Author and Org Psychologist Adam Grant says… It's not burnout, because we still have physical fuel. It's not depression because we still have hope. So what is the unpleasant place? War? No Inflation? No COVID? No What is causing us to feel weak and withered, to feel LANGUISHED? DISTRACTION Translation - we are willfully allowing ourselves to be pulled apart… pulled away. Distraction (distrahere in latin) = PULL APART We've all felt being pulled apart before… When a relationship goes sour or ends…we feel pulled apart and the nutrients of that relationship begin drying up CS Lewis on the loss of his friend Charles Williams- “Now that Charles is dead, I shall never again see Ronald's [Tolkien's] reaction to a specifically Charles joke. Far from having more of Ronald, having him “to myself” now that Charles is away, I have less of Ronald” This is our new reality, and with it, we must find new ways for each of us to Flourish… new ways to both remain attached and ignore the things that will distract.. NOW is a time for something different. NOW is a time to pivot, to stop staring at the ball of fire that was the last two years, to see what was melted down, turned to ash, and begin to till that into the soil of something new. On average… Check email 74 times per day (and yet vigorously defend it) We are said to switch tasks every 10 minutes (b/c we are checking email 74 times a day) “Gloria Mark, Ph.D., associate professor at the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of California, Irvine, and a leading expert on work, researched workplace interruptions and came to a fascinating conclusion: We don't have workdays -- we have work minutes that last all day. It takes 23 minutes to get back on task” I keep saying it BUT ARE WE DOING ANYTHING DIFFERENT? Grant suggests that we do not fight Languish with Optimism (that's empty)... but instead we fight Languish with FLOW Before we do… what is FLOW? Johann Hari has written a powerful book entitled Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention - And How To Begin Working Deeply In his book, Hari describes flow as a state of mind when “you are so absorbed in what you are doing that you lose all sense of yourself, and time seems to fall away, and you are flowing into the experience itself.” Flow is not focused on results. In fact, sometimes the outcome can bring a bit of sadness because the project is complete. We don't know how to prioritize the limited resource of time we have. So how do we find our FLOW? Fascination (Desire) All things begin w/ desire John Gardner wrote, “The renewal of societies and organizations can go forward only if someone cares (has desire - an unstoppable push to accomplish something that matters).” Hari says, “when your mind wanders, it starts to make new connections” Hari interviewed Neurology and Neurosurgery Professor at McGill University Dr. Nathan Spring who said, “Creativity is not (where you create) some new thing that has emerged from your brain…It's a new association between two things that were already there.” 74 times a day we forfeit the opportunity for our brains to make connections of impulses that are already there!!! Like-Mindedness (People & Culture) Like-minded people aligned in principles and values move together. The catalyst for like-mindedness? I've been in a bit of a funk. Not really flying, not really participating in the industry, not really inspired to put it bluntly. And I know I'm not the only one. And it's kinda funny, since by all counts, we're actually coming out of this disaster time and getting the industry on the long road to recovery. Will it ever be the same. Well, probably not exactly, but who knows, maybe it'll be better? But I finally started flying again on the regular. Every Saturday around noon you might find me in a Diamond Star somewhere over Southern California and it feels pretty good. But there were a few first flights back that felt more than a little uncomfortable and awkward. And I don't like feeling that way in an airplane. Now I know, I know, this might be the last thing anybody wants to talk about ever again. Except maybe politics, that's usually worse, and I usually make a point to steer clear of that as much as possible, but the conversation we have isn't about that, although it may border dangerously close few times... It's about what I call “getting it back.” Our lives, our inspiration, our mojo. Getting our groove back so that we can put this all behind us as quickly and healthily (I'm sure that's a legitimate medical term) as possible. So, I hope you'll stay listening, and let me know how you're feeling as we come back to reality. THE ARTICLE I USED: https://www.nytimes.com/2021/04/19/well/mind/covid-mental-health-languishing.htmlLanguishing is not merely in our heads — it's in our circumstances. You can't heal a sick culture with personal bandages. We still live in a world that normalizes physical health challenges but stigmatizes mental health challenges. As we head into a new post-pandemic reality, it's time to rethink our understanding of mental health and well-being. “Not depressed” doesn't mean you're not struggling. “Not burned out” doesn't mean you're fired up. By acknowledging that so many of us are languishing, we can start giving voice to quiet despair and lighting a path out of the void.ADAM GRANT'S POD: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/id1346314086 Get bonus content on PatreonSupport this show http://supporter.acast.com/make-your-damn-bed. They say that good is the enemy of great. Comfort, and being 'okay' where you're currently at in your life is what is keeping you from performing at the potential you're capable of and manifesting your dreams! There is a widespread epidemic among us; it's not a sickness, a disease, or a physical detriment. It's something you wouldn't have thought of as a 'problem', but I want to discuss with you the real dangers of what we're facing and how we can overcome this. Also, I need your help! In February I asked you to complete a survey which gave me so much valuable information as to what you'd like to see and how I can best serve you. The time has come again to assess where you're currently at on your journey, which will help me know what programs, content and workshops I can create to help you get there faster!Click this link to take this quick survey, it means SO much to me!!
Join us for Episode 12 to Recap Roma, Languish the Lyon draw, and Go-For-It-All in the Geneva Open bracket challenge. Also, we are taking the next week off but have no fear we will be back during Roland Garros to go over our picks, and the first week of action!
