Send us a textIn this episode of Small Business Big Dreams, I sit down with Dan Kjeldbjerg, President of Poul's Landscaping & Nursery, and Jennifer, the company's Director of Marketing, to explore the story behind one of the Midwest's most respected names in landscaping. Founded in 1966 by Danish immigrant Paul (Poul) Kjeldbjerg, this family business has blossomed from a single-truck operation into a multi-acre, multi-generational powerhouse offering full-service landscape design, installation, and nursery production throughout Chicagoland and beyond.Dan shares how he and his brother Alan helped evolve the company after joining in the 1980s and '90s, using their backgrounds in marketing and horticulture to bring new life into the business their father started from humble beginnings. Jennifer gives insight into how the brand continues to modernize while staying rooted in its legacy—through strong storytelling, authentic community connections, and showcasing the beauty of their work in ways that resonate with new generations of homeowners and professionals alike. We talk about how Poul's Landscaping has expanded its footprint—from planting the first trees at their Long Grove property in the '80s to operating a 112-acre wholesale nursery in Wadsworth—all while maintaining a reputation for excellence, craftsmanship, and personal service. From residential landscapes to large-scale nursery operations, Dan and Jennifer explain how the company continues to thrive through thoughtful leadership, passion for the craft, and a commitment to nurturing not just plants, but people and partnerships. What You'll Learn in This Episode:✅ How Poul's Landscaping started with a single pickup and a dream ✅ The evolution of a family-run business into a regional leader in landscaping and nursery operations ✅ How Dan and Jennifer balance legacy with innovation and growth ✅ The importance of storytelling, branding, and relationship-building in a traditional industry ✅ Insights into running multi-acre operations, seasonal cycles, and team management ✅ What it takes to thrive in the green industry for over five decadesWhy Poul's Landscaping & Nursery Stands Out:With deep family roots and a relentless commitment to quality, Poul's Landscaping & Nursery has become synonymous with professionalism, reliability, and nature-inspired design. Their ability to combine generational experience with modern strategy—from operations to marketing—makes them a standout example of how traditional businesses can grow with purpose while staying true to their core values.Perfect For:

The oral microbiome has been recently classified as a “gateway” microbiome, giving it immense importance in total body health. The placental microbiome is another gateway microbiome- it sets the immune system of the developing child- and is extremely important since it's closely related in microbial content to the oral microbiome! But what creates a dysbiotic oral microbiome? My guest today is Mark L. Cannon. He is a Professor of Otolaryngology- Division of Dentistry at Northwestern University, Feinberg School of Medicine, an Attending Physician at Ann and Robert Lurie Children's Hospital, and a member of the International Association of Pediatric Dentistry. In addition to being the founder of Associated Dental Specialists of Long Grove (1981); he is the Research Coordinator of the Pediatric Dental residency program at Ann and Robert Lurie Children's Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Cannon has 40 years of experience in pediatric dentistry and has presented lectures both nationally and internationally. He lectures on many oral health topics including evolutionary oral medicine, the gateway microbiomes, biologic and bioactive dental materials (patents owner), probiotics, and all aspects of everyday Pediatric oral health. Dr. Cannon has humbly accepted two invitations by the Karolinska Institutet, first to the Nobel Forum (2016) and secondly to the Nobel Assembly (2017). Most of all, Dr. Cannon is the proud father of five, all of whom are very accomplished. He is also a very proud grandfather! Do you have issues with both the skin and your dental health? Have you considered tackling the mouth issues first? Let me know in the comments! In this episode: What is a "gateway microbiome"? Why missing THESE bacteria from your mouth microbiome is problematic List of diseases + health issues associated with a messed up oral microbiome What bacteria like P. gingivalis can INSIDE of your cells Is xylitol helpful for oral microbiome health? Strep salivarius VS. Strep mutans Quotes "Half the population has their gut controlled by the mouth. If you have leaky gut, you have leaky gums, leaky blood-brain barrier... And before you know it, problems with the skin, which is what we've seen in so many studies. You'll find a lot of studies showing that with every skin disorder, there's an associated gut microbiome problem" [06:07] "It was a very, very powerful multi-center study... And they significantly reduced preterm birth by having the moms chewing xylitol gum. I mean, the savings and healthcare dollars are huge, but again, you're working on a gateway microbiome and you're inhibiting a keystone pathogen." Today I'm talking to Christie Baines of the Baines Server Group at Jameson Sotheby's International Realty in Barrington Illinois, the northwestern suburbs of Chicago. A real estate agent for over 34 years, Christie started in traditional resale. It was within her first year that she was offered and transitioned to an onsite opportunity. She was the first salesperson hired for the Wynstone development in North Barrington Illinois with its highly acclaimed Jack Nicklaus Golf Course. In 13 months, she and her team pre-sold every home in the 750 acre community. After selling Wynstone, Christie was the Broker and led the strategic planning of inception sales and marketing for 4 more new residential developments in and around Chicago, including Barrington, Long Grove, and St. Charles. In 1995 Christie transitioned to resales with her brokerage, Wynstone Realty. In 2005, Wynstone Realty was selected and offered the esteemed and coveted opportunity to become a Sotheby's Affiliate. In 2007, she and her partner finally accepted. As part of the arrangement, she was able to sell her Brokerage to an investor who was of course agreed to and approved by Sotheby's. Christie achieved what most real estate agents aspire to and dream of; she sold her Business. She then continued to forge ahead as a top real estate agent still paying it forward to her team and the industry at large. In our conversation today, she shares details and stories behind the transformation of her career and how she grew from onsite agent to agent on top.Jere interviews the world's most renowned and best real estate agents around the country and the world. These outstanding Agents tell their stories, how they got into the business, and what has made them successful in one of the oldest and most competitive industries. All of this on the “Jere Metcalf Podcast, Top Real Estate Agents tell how they do it.”www.JereMetcalfPodcast.comPowered byJere Metcalf Partners404.627.7789jere@jeremetcalfpartners.comJeremetcalfpartners.com
In today's episode I chat with one of my classmates from Pacifica Graduate Institute, Gabe Gould "In Jungian psychology, the term ‘puer' is used to describe an adult man whose emotional life has remained at an adolescent level, usually coupled with too great a dependence on the mother. The typical puer shirks responsibility for his actions, and understandably so, since what he does is not within his conscious control. He is at the mercy of his unconscious, and is especially vulnerable to his instinctive drives. He is prone to do what ‘feels right.' However, he is so alienated from his true feelings that what feels right one minute often feels wrong the next. The individuating puer—one coming to grips with his attitudes and behaviour patterns—knows that undifferentiated feelings are highly suspect, especially when they arise in conjunction with the use of alcohol or other drugs. Instead of identifying with his feelings, he tries to keep some distance from them, which means objectifying what he is experiencing. He questions himself: Is this what I really feel? Is this what I want? What are the consequences? Can I live with them? Can I live with myself? How does what I do affect others?" Gabe Gould is a Jungian psychologist in training, author, and leader of Chicago's suburban farming movement. His research explores the intersections between Kabbalah and Jungian psychology, as well as rites of passage and comparative male development. Cheers and local beers, tap heads! We're thrilled to have Mike Marr joining us today; he's the owner and brewmeister at Buffalo Creek Brewing in Long Grove, IL. In addition to talking about the brewery, his background, and the beer industry, he also walks us through a tasting of some of their beers. Before diving into more nerdy subjects, we learn about Mike as a beer drinker, growing up in upstate New York, and what his beer options were. We also find out about his nerdy day job before deciding to open up a brewery. We discuss brewing during COVID, the changes they've had to make, and what's in place to keep everyone safe.We talk about what makes the Chicago area beer scene unique, the type of beers that Buffalo Creek specializes in, the new trend in craft beer, and brewery pet peeves. The beers we sampled are Marrvelous, Red Headed Stepchild, and North Star. Marrvelous is a classic Kölsch that is a perfect beer all year round. Red Headed Stepchild is a traditional German blonde that has been infused with massive amounts of real strawberries. And North Star is a German-style Altbier that drinks like the combination of a Marzen and an ESB. They're also donating $1 of every pint to YouthBuild Lake County, a local non-profit organization.A huge thank you to Mike Marr for spending time with us during a busy week of brewing. You can follow Buffalo Creek Brewing on Instagram and Facebook @buffalocreekbrewing and @buffalocrkbrew on Twitter. Since the entire year is canceled, a unique opportunity to do this craft paper in the form of a podcast was available, and that's how I decided to do so. Podcast friends, meet my classmates. Classmates, podcast friends. Special thanks to those who contributed their voices to this presentation: Jamie Randall, Steve Shives, Callie Wright, and Don Ford Jr. “Reclaiming Power and Agency With the Subjective ‘I' in Travel Writing.” This talk examines the roots of supposed “objectivity” in travel writing and how the idea was utilized as a form of Euro-imperialism, exploiting culture through the lens of the elite and privileged, all the while gatekeeping truth as a form of social science and expression. Reclaiming agency in one's own work by being willing to put oneself in it is an act of rejecting the idea that removing oneself from it is somehow objective and, therefore, truth. Travel writing specifically has a history of using the lens of privileged, elite-educated, European white men as the objective truth to both control the narrative and justify their actions, and this piece will dismantle that idea and argue for the validity and value in the subjective nature of personal narrative in travel writing.Works CitedBohannon, Paul.
