The music business has had ups and downs for Houston native Sam Morrow. He's bounced around geographically and within his own sound through a decade or more and a half dozen studio albums. But his recent return to his home state of Texas, reconnecting with an old flame who is now his wife, and his clarity on what he wants to do musically produced a dandy of a Southern rock offering called Southern Boogie. Morrow joined us on Roots Music Rambler to dig into the changes in latitude and attitude that produced the record, his journey from Texas to L.A. to Nashville and back, and how life is different now with all the changes.  Morrow has migrated from country to singer-songwriter to Southern rock throughout his career, but with Boogie, his sixth studio album, he seems to be where he should be – making bangers about life and love, all while bringing out his own spin on the sound of a Texas rocker. Frank and Falls also catch up on Frank's experience at American Music Fest at Chicago's heralded music venue Fitzgeralds, and some fun live music plans for Falls' July trip to the Windy City. (Spoiler: Lucia's plans with her dad fell through and she got to see Lucy Dacus with the RMR crew and family!) Several years ago, Paula K had the original idea to set up the all women rock band, specifically for a fundraiser for ovarian cancer charity OvaCare. Paula explains, "The fundraiser was in memory of my mother Catherine who passed away from ovarian cancer, and she inspired the name. She was a feminist who loved to lift other women up. The Kates have been going ever since!” The premise behind forming The Kates back in 2017 was to showcase the depth and variety of songs by women featuring covers by artists like Sharon Van Etten, Orla Gartland, Angel Olsen, Lucy Dacus, Patty Smith, The Staves, and Haim. The Kates comprises of Eve Clague, Liz Clark, Mary Beth O Mahony, Míde Houlihan and Paula K. All five members have played, sang and written their own music for years, each releasing albums of original work. Their debut EP Pictures Here Of Dreams features a track written by each member of The Kates. Speaking about the upcoming album Paula K says, “We have spent the last year gigging and writing. The upcoming album is a collection of songs that happened between takes of our work and family lives. Naming that space as a creative outlet, where ideas were born and we found out more about ourselves as a band. Our Kates space.” New single ‘You Don't See It', sees Mary Beth O'Mahony take lead vocal on a song that features the writing talents of all five members of The Kates. They continue to lean into their rock background while the harmonies that brought them acclaim on their debut EP sound more dynamic and confident, finding comparison to contemporary peers like Pillow Queens and Little Green Cars. Once again we see The Kates talk about life as women and the unwanted pressure and attention often felt. Míde Houlihan's percussion cheekily taps into the concept and lyric of “Time keeps ticking”. The band are declaring time is up on these old fashioned ideals. The Kates are writing their own story and walking their own path. Since the release of their debut EP Pictures Here of Dreams in 2024 Cork band The Kates have gone from strength to strength. The Kates entered 2026 with the announcement of their debut album later this year with new single ‘You Don't See It'. Following the release of their debut EP The Kates went on to perform at Other Voices, Electric Picnic, and Clonakilty International Guitar Festival. The Kates also just performed at this year's Your Roots Are Showing conference in January 2026. In 2025 they toured both Ireland and Wales selling out DeBarras and Connolly's of Leap.

 It was a great time talking with Jake about his transition from Political Science to music, how he puts a song together, and he had a really good take on when a song is truly finished.   He also told us about how doing improv comedy lends itselfto songwriting, and of course, his new album “Idling High” available everywhere!     Jake Cassman's music echoes the raw energy of indie rock, the artful melodicism of power pop, and the thoughtful and vulnerable songwriting of the best Americana. And since he began releasing music in 2013, Cassman has embarked on a musical odyssey that has taken him to intimate venues and major stages around the country, drawing in audiences with electric,eclectic performances, and songs that make the intimate seem epic and the political feel personal. This year will see the release of his debut LP, Idling High -- a staggeringly ambitious and disarmingly honest record that showcases Cassman's wry humor, acute observations, and deep compassion.    Jake began playing piano at age five, and started writing music soon after. He loved Elton John from an early age -- but when his teacher couldn't show him how to play Green Day songs, he began teaching himself; and when he realized he wanted music to be his career, he left an Ivy League school to pursue it. Since then he has worked as a dueling piano player, musicaltheater composer, improv and sketch comedian, and podcast producer (just to name a few gigs). He is also a published academic and a school music educator, while still finding time to play pickup basketball most weekends and try new beers based on the silliness of their names.    Cassman has contributed performances and songs to various political and social justice causes, and his inventive, award-winning music videos bring the stories and ideas from his songs to life in unforgettable ways. His previous project, Drunken Logic, contributed the song and video"What A Beautiful Morning!" to the 2016 anti-Trump compilation 30 Days, 30 Songs alongside R.E.M., Death Cab For Cutie, and more. Lucy Dacus has a new album coming out on March 28th, called Forever Is A Feeling. So, in the week before it comes out, I thought it could be nice to revisit her Song Exploder episode from 2021. It's about the beautiful and brutally heartbreaking song "Thumbs," which I love. And since recording that episode, Lucy's won three Grammy awards as part of her band Boygenius, including Album of the Year. But back in 2021, I had a really nice afternoon talking to Lucy. She was the first guest to come over and record with me at my studio, in person, after COVID hit. So I have a lot of fond memories about this one, and I hope you'll enjoy listening or re-listening to it with me.Lucy Dacus is a singer and songwriter from Richmond, Virginia.
