"Sprinter" The Florida-born Cat Ridgeway is speeding into national prominence. Or, to be more specific, she's sprinting there. Ridgeway's new album Sprinter is an adrenalized blast of hook-filled rock and roll, howling blues and scruffy pop that's one of the most refreshing listens of the year. A commanding presence with charisma to burn, Ridgeway, along with her band the Tourists, are full of a howling punk-rock electricity that summons everyone from the White Stripes to the Foo Fighters. Now Ridgeway is a self-taught musician who plays harmonica, trumpet, trombone, mandolin, bass, piano and guitar and that's incredibly impressive, but having spoken to her, she has an autodidact streak that runs through her life. Hence the reference I made to coffee earlier, but I'll let Cat tell you all about that. Named Orlando's Best Singer-Songwriter for the last three years, Ridgeway has played with Houndmouth, Arcade Fire and Lucy Dacus and she's no stranger to playing music festivals around the country. She's a typhoon of positive energy and you're going to love her. www.catridgewaymusic.com (http://www.catridgewaymusic.com) www.stereoembersmagazine.com www.bombshellradio.com (http://www.bombshellradio.com) www.alexgreenbooks.com (http://www.alexgreenbooks.com) Stereo Embers Bluesky + IG: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

The singer-songwriter sits down with Tom Power to tell us what she thinks is missing in modern love songs, what she's learned about love (spoiler alert: she's still searching for answers), and how she feels about the end of her Grammy-winning supergroup boygenius. If you like this conversation, you'll probably also enjoy Tom's chat with Phoebe Bridgers.

It's been a busy spring for Julien Baker: she just released a collaborative album with Torres, ‘Send A Prayer My Way', played Coachella with boygenius, & announced her relationship with bandmate Lucy Dacus. Given all that, it seemed like a great time to re-issue my conversation with her from back in 2021. We talked about her last solo record, ‘Little Oblivions', OCD, addiction & relapse, spirituality, & tons more. Her honesty throughout this conversation is why it remains one of my favourite interviews I've done, & one that has also resonated with a lot of you. How important is it to make music with purpose? Annie and Nick chat about Ezra Collective's Femi Koleoso teaching people what's important at this year's 6 Music Festival. Elsewhere, AJ Tracey has decided to include smaller cities and venues on his upcoming tour and Sam (not Shawn) Mendes is set to create not one but four Beatles Biopics featuring Paul Mescal, Harris Dickinson, Barry Keoghan and Joseph Quinn as each band member. Plus, Lucy Dacus asks Annie and Nick which music artist they'd curate an exhibition on, Annie reveals all about wining Player of The Match at her latest football game, and what are some quintessential spring songs? In conversation with Emily Fox, she discusses everything from love, lyricism, and making conscious decisions to step away from boygenius and her solo work to find balance and stillness. She also breaks down some of her favorite songs and lyrical moments on the new record. “I keep saying this, how you spend your time is how you spent your life. And that has been a really profound cliche to remember,” Dacus says. “You're in charge of your time more than you realize.”Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Springtime brings musical renewal as hosts Matt and Sam curate twelve standout tracks spanning the contemporary music landscape. Their carefully selected mixtape captures everything from Lady Gaga's 80s-inspired dance anthem "Killa" to the tender acoustic stylings of Third Eye Blind's "Like a Lullaby," demonstrating how established artists continue evolving while staying true to their signature sounds. The mixtape delivers unexpected delights like Lexi Liu's reimagining of Le Tigre's "Decepticon," which transforms a 1999 indie classic into a fresh pop gem. Indie rock fans will appreciate the separate appearances of Boy Genius alumni Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, while Queens-based rapper Lil Tecca demonstrates remarkable talent for a 23-year-old who's been creating music since childhood. The mix finishes with a range of songs from the cathartic rage of Dinosaur Pileup to the unity message in The Lathams' "Heartbreaker."  The Criticals' remake of their own song "Good Lookin'" years after its original release, and explore how Matt Berninger's solo work compares to his output with The National. What new music are you discovering this spring? Lucy Dacus has a new album coming out on March 28th, called Forever Is A Feeling. So, in the week before it comes out, I thought it could be nice to revisit her Song Exploder episode from 2021. It's about the beautiful and brutally heartbreaking song "Thumbs," which I love. And since recording that episode, Lucy's won three Grammy awards as part of her band Boygenius, including Album of the Year. But back in 2021, I had a really nice afternoon talking to Lucy. She was the first guest to come over and record with me at my studio, in person, after COVID hit. So I have a lot of fond memories about this one, and I hope you'll enjoy listening or re-listening to it with me.Lucy Dacus is a singer and songwriter from Richmond, Virginia. She put out her first album in 2016, and in 2018 she formed the band Boygenius with Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers. In June 2021, she released her third album, Home Video, which includes this song, "Thumbs." The first time I heard it, I knew I wanted to ask Lucy about how and why she made it. After some COVID testing, we spoke in person here in Los Angeles. And she told me the story of how "Thumbs" took months and months to get right. For more, visit songexploder.net/lucy-dacus.
