The glorious Desiderata by Max Ehrmann (1927) accompanies us on our walk around the park, this lunchtime.
*This episode was intended to be released on Monday, December 30, 2024. While the video version was released on YouTube on that date, apparently I forgot to complete the process of scheduling it to go out on audio platforms, and only noticed the error on Friday, January 3, 2025. I apologize for the error. In this solo episode, I close out the year by reflecting on the significant events and personal growth I experienced throughout 2024. I ask myself questions about my guiding values and decision-making processes when faced with challenges, and explore what I would like to take with me and to leave behind as we enter 2025. I share a bit about personal hardships I faced this past year, including a choppy start to the year as the highs of a paradisiacal vacation ended in worsening illness culminating in a new low. This experience led me to seek even more novel treatments for my symptoms, specifically a stellate ganglion block procedure, which I discuss in detail, highlighting its impact on my nervous system and overall well-being.As I navigated my health struggles, I made the difficult decision to step back from therapy to focus on consulting, allowing me to prioritize my health while still providing support to parents of gender-confused youth, eventually resulting in developing my course, ROGD Repair. I delve into the importance of listening to our bodies and trusting the process, which ultimately led to the development of this niche program that applies my strengths in psychology and communication to the novel challenges facing families today.Throughout the episode, I also confront the challenges of being in the public eye, including the unexpected backlash I faced in May, and how I am learning to find humor and perspective in difficult situations. As I look forward to 2025, I share my intentions for the new year, including wedding planning and the launch of continuing education courses for therapists, all while maintaining a focus on connection and community. 00:00 Start[00:01:18] New Year's intentions and reflections.[00:06:49] Navigating personal health challenges.[00:09:30] Stellate ganglion block experience.[00:12:55] Effects of SGB medical procedure.[00:17:10] Therapy vs. Consulting Transition.[00:23:39] Niche consulting for parents.[00:25:36] Friendly fire and hidden enemies.[00:30:24] Relationships with podcast listeners.[00:33:09] Healing through positive relationships.[00:37:16] Nature of evil.[00:44:09] Synchronous communication versus asynchronous.[00:46:16] Finding ikigai and gratitude.[00:51:32] Embracing the aging process.[00:53:17] Non-toxic lifestyle choices.[00:57:44] Ego-dystonic versus ego-syntonic.[01:01:51] Healing through humor and levity.[01:06:21] Clear-eyed compassion and eye health.[01:09:06] Growth and perspective in life.[01:14:00] The power of positive perception.[01:17:01] ROGD Repair community benefits.[01:17:56] Desiderata by Max Ehrmann. In this episode Savannah rants about the only certain thing in life: uncertainty. -- IG: @sustainedwithsav @yayforgrowthpod Quote: “You are a child of the universe,no less than the trees and the stars;you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you,no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.”― Max Ehrmann, Desiderata: A Poem for a Way of Life
Words for a good life. The power of words to move us should never be underestimated. I finally sat down with my wife to plan my funeral this week, and wow, what an adventure. Talking this through with my wife was strangle liberating. I have never felt so loved. The show is not about my funeral but my relationship with a piece of text I first discovered in my late 20s. Do you have a special poem or piece of writing that moves you? Ok to put the record straight I have no intention of shuffling off just yet, but preparation is everything and leaving a document for my family to follow does give them something to use or build on once I have passed. A bit if context my wife is training to be an interfaith minister and she had to complete a funeral assignment, and it was decided with my agreement that I would be a good candidate for her. Personally I think It made it a more challenging exercise, in our conversation we looked at the practical process or getting rid of my body. We have found a beautiful green burial ground. Burning my body will release far too much carbon. The moving part of the exercise was music and words. I suddenly remembered. Desiderata I discovered it in my late 20s and rereading it made me realise that I have been on a mission of life, Passion and business for over 30 years. This peace speaks to me it is almost my 10 commandants for life. The full text is below. Words for a Good Life On the show, we explore How connecting through text like this is so powerful. How life is in 3 acts There is also some news and a free offer It will be of interest for those with business interests. It is near the end if your want to skip through. Here is the link to Jane's show https://lifepassionandbusiness.com/jane-duncan-roger-before-i-go/ Desiderata: This is the original text from the book where Desiderata was first published. Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. by Max Ehrmann ©1927

It's been awhile. Glad to see you back here. Today is a new day. A fresh start to a new you. A great time to ask the question, “Am I awake to this moment? To the here and now? To this moment?” Henry David Thoreau reminds us that the vast majority of civilization leads quiet lives of desperation. Or maybe if he were around today, he would say “noisy lives of desperation” Lives spent trying to be anywhere but here, now. Today I would like to invite you to remember that all we have is this moment. Yesterday is gone, a thing of the past, and tomorrow is no guarantee, a thing of the future. Everything that has ever happened has occurred in this moment. This moment is where the adventure begins, so why try to live anywhere else? Here at Mountain Zen Den we are all about connecting with Nature for Mindfulness and Personal Growth. By letting go of stress and finding joy in the moment. And happiness in the simple gifts of Nature. And the way we do that is by waking up and becoming Aware. By getting out of our insulated, isolated shells, and immersing ourselves in Nature. We begin by asking ourselves, “Am I connected and aware of this time and place in the natural world?” Here is one way you can tell how aware and connected you really are. Answer these simple questions. “What is currently happening in the natural world around me?” “What is the Season?” “What is the weather doing? How about the temperature? Are there clouds? What kind of clouds? Is there a breeze? What about the moon? What phase is it in? Is it waxing or waning? Where are Venus, Jupiter and Mars? And the stars… Could I point to Polaris, the North Star in the night sky and identify and name 5 other constellations from where I am standing?” These are simple and telling questions to help get us started to get an idea of how awake and connected we really are. To creation. Here are a few more. “How about the plants and wildlife around me? What is in bloom right now? What birds are currently ‘in season'”? How often do we take the time to notice the natural world all around us? The “Real World” as I like to remind myself. We are probably very aware of the current state of the political world in society and culture – the latest news, politics, economic financial markets of growth and recession, of gas and grocery prices, and even sports and celebrity status. But how awake and are we to the physical planet we live on? How about our internal world? Our personal state of being? Our self-awareness and consciousness of our connection not only to ourselves and our immediate family and relationships, but to every other thing in the Universe… the stars, rocks, plants, trees, and wildlife, down to even the unseen – molecules, atoms and subatomic particles? Why is all this important? Because disconnection with the world leads to disconnection with ourselves. And disconnection from self leads to depression, mental illness, and a host of diseases… The Native Americans had a word for this connection — “Hunkapi”. Meaning, “I am one with everything”. I was so inspired by this concept that I named our mustang Hunkapi. (Or “Huni for short). It is humbling, and alternatively comforting and reassuring to step back and become aware of the fact that we are truly one with everything. Buddhism teaches “non-duality” — that flowers and garbage are both organic in nature. As Thich Nhat Hanh says, “Looking deeply into the nature of a flower, you can see the presence of the compost and the garbage; but don't be afraid! You are a gardener, and you have in your hands the power to transform garbage into flowers, into fruit, into vegetables.” But you can only do this if you are awake. Christianity teaches that God the Creator spoke the Universe into existence, and by doing so created everything — EVERYTHING — and then called us into co-creation with Him to “be fruitful and multiply”, and to “have dominion over the Earth”. Not in a self-serving sense, exploiting Nature as a resource for personal gain, but as benevolent care-takers, lovingly, and wisely nurturing and caring for each and every one of its members. But none of this matters or means anything if we are not awake to “The Call”, and mindful of our place in the Universe. M.H. Clark says it well in the priceless little book, “Outside/In: Questions, Quotes, and Activities to Connect You to Nature” – “You know the feeling. You get it when you are standing on the shore, or staring at the sky, or when the storm is passing over, or the season is changing, or the flower you have been watching is finally bursting into bloom. It's the feeling of touching something that is huge and real and true. It's the feeling of experiencing the wildest, most beautiful parts of the world, and at the same time, experiencing the wildest, most beautiful parts of you. Because to connect to nature is to connect to yourself. And every time you do, you connect to your mind, your creativity, your senses, your well-being, your health. …open the door, in all kinds of ways, and let the outside in.” [“Awake” by Peter Mayer] If you were with us back in the fall of 2022, this isn't the first time you've heard this song. We had singer songwriter Peter Mayer with us in Episode 127 talking about living an awakened life on planet Earth. As we were bouncing ideas around Peter and I discussed the possibility of holding a Mindfulness in Nature Retreat for the purpose of going deeper within to connect with ourselves, each other and the natural world around us. Well my friends, I am pleased to tell you that this idea has come to fruition. We are scheduled to do this very thing this October 13 through 15 here in Estes Park, Colorado. You are invited to pend 3 days in the Rocky Mountains with special guest Peter Mayer exploring his songs as vehicles for discussion and contemplation, and celebrating our kinship with Nature. Presented by Mountain Zen Den, this retreat is all about exploring the art of being fully present and connecting with Nature. The goal is to introduce and facilitate a Return to Mindfulness in Nature Awareness whereby, when we return home, we do so more deeply connected to our truest selves, more richly satisfied with our lives, more energized, confident and purposeful in our living, more creative and productive, and happier human beings (the by-product). We want to do this by placing ourselves in an environment that lends itself to our ability to slow down, get silent, be fully present, and Listen. We'll be sharing more on this in the next couple of weeks, but if this sounds like something you would be interested in please reach out and let me know, and we will send you more information as it becomes available. It would be so good to see you there, and connect with each other for a whole weekend in the beauty of the Colorado Rocky Mountains! Stay tuned for more info! As we wrap up today's show I'd like to share a thought from the late writer and poet, Max Ehrmann. He beautifully reminds us, “You are a child of the Universe, no less than the trees and the stars.” Thanks so much for being here today! I look forward to seeing you again next time and invite you to remember, Life is a gift. Nature's a gift. And you are a gift back to the world! Go live a beautiful life my friend…

Hello, everyone! Today, I will be talking about the Five Point Sequence, with a focus on the first point: Preparation. How does your past inform how you currently build preparation into your life? In this episode, I talk about the power of having a coherent preparation pattern, and how through somatic work we can go back on the timeline (timeline repair) and update and rewire patterning toward something that feels supportive and cohesive. In the end, I share my inquiry around biohacking for longevity. What is hyper-preparation (over-efforting control and forgetting to live life while you have it now), and what is coherent preparation? To support these thoughts I offer two poems, one by Max Ehrmann and the other by David Whyte. In this episode you'll learn: • [02:10] The Five Point Sequence by Ray Castellino and used in Alchemical Alignment • [05:40] Building Preparation into life • [10:33] Trauma physiology and preparation. • [15:03] Doing timeline repair to rewire and update patterns in the nervous system. • [17:10] Is biohacking for longevity hyper preparation or just preparation? • [21:44] Desiderata, by Max Ehrmann. • [25:34] What to Remember When Waking, by David Whyte. • [30:26] Takeaways from this episode. Quotes: “Not just thinking that I should be able to go from one thing to the next thing to the next. Preparation might even be a pause, ‘I'm going to take a pause. I'm going to notice my resources before I walk into that room, I'm going to notice my feet on the ground. I'm gonna broaden my surroundings. I'm going to notice my breath...'” -Sarah Tacy [07:40] “So if as a child, you felt unsafe when one shot when one parent came home, you probably became a pro at reading the room.” -Sarah Tacy [14:00] “When we get wrinkles, we get grays, and as our bodies become less agile, these are steps towards our big let go.” – Bryan Kest [18:27] “The more of the reserve we have, the better off we are.” – Peter Attia [19:01] “You are a child of the universe.” – Max Ehrmann [24:10] “What you can plan is too small for you to live.” – David Whyte [26:43] Connect with Sarah: Website: sarahtacy.com 21 Days of Untapped Support https://sarahtacy.com/21-days/ Lean for Nervous System Support: https://sarahtacy.com/lean/

Adam creates a hypnosis session inspired by the poem Desiderata by Max Ehrmann. Adam offers a decision to highlight that time is more important than money and then utilises the content of the poem to highlight the importance of making the most of the life that you have. This powerful hypnosis session will help you stop wasting time on things that don't matter and give you the motivation to pursue those things that do. This is the poem: Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. Here's the magic of the mind: when we pay attention, we have the wonderful capacity to both think our thoughts AND witness ourselves thinking them. We are the thinker and the watcher all at once, which means when the uninvited memories and unwelcome worries arrive, we can notice that they're there. This awareness allows us to (eventually) work around the land mines or render them harmless. It's simple but not always easy, so I'll share some practices I use to tame my mind. I've come to see that we typically don't experience the world around us; we experience our thoughts about the world around us. And we can often change our life experience simply by changing our thinking. Here's what I mean: The other day I needed to drive somewhere to pick something up. It was a busy week and it felt really inconvenient and annoying to have to go run this errand. I was feeling pretty pissy about it. And then I remembered that there was a podcast episode I'd been meaning to listen to. Suddenly, I was looking forward to an hour in the car by myself. What felt like a burden suddenly felt like a gift. I didn't change my circumstances, but I radically altered my experience simply by changing my thinking. “An untamed mind is a minefield,” writes Brianna Wiest in her book 101 Essays That Will Change the Way You Think. A mind that is a minefield is one that can suddenly and easily unravel into anxiety, regret, shame or anger. I often experience thoughts that seem to come in from nowhere. Old memories float in uninvited. Worries, often unfounded and unwelcome, can linger. My mind is susceptible to unsolicited thoughts that can metastasize into a mental shit storm when I'm not paying attention. But here's the magic of the mind: when we do pay attention, we have the wonderful capacity to both think our thoughts AND witness ourselves thinking them. Develop Your Inner Noticer Sometimes noticing is all we have to do. It can be enough to simply bring our attention to our thinking long enough to merely name it. “Ah, look at that. I'm thinking about that conversation with my client again.” Perhaps our noticing begins to reveal negative patterns in our thinking. For me, that's often noticing that I'm jumping to conclusions or making speculative assumptions. We may start to see that we have a lot of mental habits (such as jumping to conclusions). Noticing mental habits takes away their mysterious power over us. Maybe instead of just noticing the landmines, we also start to disarm them. This is the taming of the mind that Brianna Wiest refers to. This is where we start to access our own sense of agency and autonomy over our thinking. We can develop control over racing, erratic thoughts the same way we develop any acquired talent, by practicing relating to our thoughts in new ways. With consistency, we begin to develop a new relationship with the mind. Trade Up It's amazing what we hear when we actually listen to our thoughts. If we were to broadcast them when we're stressed, we might hear things like: “I can't do this.” “This is not going to work out.” “I should never have taken this on.” Our thoughts affect how we feel, which impacts what we do and how we respond. Here's some good news: We are capable of listening to our inner dialogue AND we are capable of upgrading it. I learned the concept of “trading up” from my friend Kim Ades, who founded Frame of Mind Coaching. Essentially, we isolate a negative thought, such as “this not going to work out,” and we trade it in for a slightly more positive one, such as, “if this doesn't work out, it could lead to something that does.” The idea isn't to be unrealistically positive, but to choose a new thought that is both believable AND elevating in an incremental climb. Just the other day I used Kim's trading up practice to shift me out of a negative thought spiral. As I may have previously shared, we recently adopted a one-year-old dog from Korea and his transition into our home has been incredibly slow. Having spent his entire life in a shelter, everything in our home is new and, as a result, Leo is incredibly timid, anxious and closed off. I caught myself feeling upset, disappointed and stressed about Leo. And when I tuned in I was able to isolate the thought “this is really hard.” “This is hard,” I told myself with self-compassion. “But it will get better. You've already seen micro progressions forward. Within a few weeks or months, this will be a completely relaxed and happy dog.” I traded up and as I continued on in my day with this new baseline thought, I felt more at ease. Try it out. Take out a piece of paper. Tuning into your inner dialogue, write down your dominant thoughts and isolate one that's emitting stress. Notice how the body responds to it. Does your heart race? Do you feel sad or anxious? Now, write a few upgrades to the negative thought and feel which one lands as true for you. Create space for a different possibility. Continue climbing the ladder of better feeling thoughts until you notice a shift in how you feel. Give the Bothersome Mind a Bone “Your mind is bothering you,” said Michael Singer, author of the Untethered Soul, in one of his podcast episodes. Sometimes it's as though my mind has a mind of its own. I notice this is especially the case when I wake up in the middle of the night and my mind starts endlessly chewing on a series of worries or concerns. It's like a dog with a bone. Give it a new bone. Sometimes the best way to conquer the mind is to beat it at its own game. It's obsessed with thinking? Fine! Give it something to think about. I've been known to go through, scene by scene, the entirety of Love Actually, my favorite movie. I've mentally wondered through French towns and been pampered at five-star spas. I've counted backwards from 300 in threes. In 2001, I memorized the entire poem Desiderata by Max Ehrmann and used it to ease my mind during a particularly difficult time in my life. The point is, sometimes I know that settling my mind or upgrading my thoughts is too tall an order. It's not cheating to give my mind something other than my worries and ruminations to chew on. Connect with Your Older Self When it comes to triggering thoughts, especially those rooted in old memories, I can often feel frustrated that I'm triggered in the first place. Shouldn't I be over this by now? Why do I still care? I'm steeped in regret or shame, but then I make it worse by layering on a dose of self-criticism and resistance. While it may feel at times that I haven't grown at all in my capacity to redirect my thinking and nurture some self-compassion, the truth is that I've worked my way through hundreds of thoughts and old memories that no longer trigger me. It's taken time, a different perspective, sometimes therapy and often just good ol' forgetting, but I've triumphed over negative thoughts many, many times. It's helpful to know that when I spiral into a negative thought loop that it won't always be this way, that at some point I'll find the wherewithal to show that thought who's boss. When I'm caught in a negative loop, I imagine a me 10 or 20 years from now who can think that thought or reflect on that memory with a totally neutral stance, not triggered at all. I can hold it in my open palm and blow it softly into the breeze like a dandelion wish. I can learn, and have learned, how to simply let go of the grip a thought can have on me. Knowing that sometimes it just takes time, practice and a different perspective gives me the grace to be kind to the me I am today, the me that doesn't quite have what it takes yet to gently and lovingly turn my attention elsewhere. How do I know this works? Because I have loads of evidence of things that used to really bother me that no longer do. I have proof that eventually the sting or the storm eventually subside. I can lean on this knowledge for support when I'm going through something tough today. Final Thought: It's Just the Mind I want to leave you with one last thought: to tame the mind is also to befriend it. It doesn't mean to cause you so much harm. It's just doing what minds are designed to do, and that is think. Sometimes my mind thinks wonderfully creative thoughts. Sometimes it gives me the idea to do something loving and kind for someone else. Sometimes it notices something good in my life. And sometimes it drags up an old memory or clings to negative thoughts. It's all just thinking. And the more I can simply allow that this is just the mind being the mind, and not get caught up in the mind being the mind, the more it is tamed and the more I am at peace.

Strive to be happy. I shared Max Ehrmann's Desiderata poem with you yesterday. The line I love in that (among many) is , Beyond wholesome discipline be gentle with yourself. There have been so many times in my life when I wanna get down on myself. Oh shoot, I haven't done the podcast in four or five days. I have to do that. Oh shoot, I meant to send that patient their exercises yesterday and I haven't gotten around to doing it, I'm a bad person because I didn't. Oh no, that conversation with that player or parent ended really badly. I'm a bad coach and person. I missed that free-throw at the end of the game, I stink, I shouldn't be on the team. I forgot to remind that kid that the bus was leaving early, I'm wasting everybody's time. These situations happen weekly. That line in that poem helps me ‘keep peace with my soul' as it says in the second to last line

In this episode Asta Speaks of the importance of realising who you are. He also reads the beautiful poem Desiderate by Max Ehrmann.
Max Ehrmann(1872-1945) was a scholar and poet, born in Terre Haute, Indiana on September 16, 1872. He was the youngest of five children of German immigrants. He graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana in 1894, and then studied law and philosophy at Harvard University. After 10 years in the business world, Ehrmann retired so he could devote all his time to literary work. During his life, Max Ehrmann contributed great thoughts to our literary lexicons, blending the magic of words and wisdom with his worthy observations. His deep and abiding concern over social issues are reflected throughout his many works. He searched endlessly for spiritual contentment, often turning to nature as in his poem, The Noise of the City and Away. His philosophical writings are a search for social truth and peace—messages that never age. Max Ehrmann wrote many poems, although none were well known until after his death. They have been collected into several books including the Desiderata of Happiness, and the Desiderata of Faith. His two most famous poems are Desiderata (1927) and A Prayer (1906).

We have a special show this week. I've always have loved the poem Desiderata and thought it would be of value to the NLS Tribe. Found in Old Saint Paul's Church – BaltimoreIn 1927 American writer Max Ehrmann (1872–1945) wrote the prose poem Desiderata, which was first published in The Poems of Max Ehrmann in 1948. In 1956, the Reverend Frederick Kates, rector of Saint Paul's Church in Baltimore, Maryland, included Desiderata in a compilation of devotional materials for his congregation. The compilation included the church's foundation date: “Old Saint Paul's Church, Baltimore AD 1692”. Consequently, the date of the text's authorship was (and still is) widely mistaken as 1692, the year of the church's foundation. – WikipediaI hope reading or listening to Desiderata brought a bit of light and hope to your journey. Be well.

"With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world" is a line taken from one of my favorite poems, Desiderata. It was written in 1927 by a lawyer, businessman, and poet named Max Ehrmann (1872-1945). This beautiful literary work is filled with the timeless wisdom you need to achieve greatness. It gives me pleasure to share it with you now because "Bad Thought Therapy" strives to help you discover the silver lining behind life's dark clouds. What we become, say, and do begins with what is in our heads. The good news is that we have the power to control which thoughts dominate our minds and which ones to listen to and follow. Therefore, it is critical to "think" about the message we can salvage from a "mess"; the opportunities in the obstacles; the treasures in the trouble; and the purpose in the pain. Each human being is born with the valuable gift and superpower of choice. It is up to an individual to choose good over bad and right instead of wrong despite whatever he or she might experience. With love, I encourage you to decide in your heart and mind to live and not merely exist. Once good thoughts are tattooed in your brain, everything you need for your journey will manifest itself in amazing ways. I hope you enjoy Ehrmann's poem as much as I have over the years. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/cherie-hardy/message

This prose poem is like an instruction manual for life. It is hugely uplifting and affirms life as something to be journeyed through with integrity and compassion. It touches upon many areas of existence from our relationships and careers to ageing and our mental well-being. Truly, a deep and meaningful composition if ever there were one.
We had the pleasure of interviewing SOJA over Zoom video!SOJA's new album, Beauty In The Silence (their first in four years), was released on September 24th via ATO Records. Earlier this summer, the band released the album's first three singles, “Something To Believe In” ft. Stick Figure, “Press Rewind” ft. Collie Buddz + J Boog and “The Day You Came” ft. UB40 + Rebelution which have racked up millions of streams across DSPs in the weeks since their debut. Fueled by the sheer force of the band's connection and chemistry, Beauty in the Silence makes for a much-needed antidote to fractured times, infusing so much warmth and wisdom and unstoppable joy into each and every track. Like 2014's acclaimed Amid the Noise and Haste (a GRAMMY nominee for Best Reggae Album), the title to Beauty in the Silence references the opening lines of Max Ehrmann's beloved poem “Desiderata”: Go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence. “My dad had that poem memorized, and before I'd go out on tour he'd sort of whisper it in my ear,” said Hemphill. “To me, it's a reminder of what we lose when we get caught up in the distractions all around us. You get so used to life being loud and fast and goal-oriented, but then you go out in nature and hear the silence and realize, ‘Damn, I got tricked.' Life doesn't have to be all go, go, go. The real key to life is in being still.” SOJA deliberately took their time in creating Beauty in the Silence as they explored new sonic terrain—recording in such iconic spots as Miami's Circle House Studios and Dave Matthews Band's Haunted Hollow, and teaming up with producers like Niko Marzouca (Pharrell, Rick Ross, A$AP Rocky, Damian Marley), Mariano Aponte, and Johnny Cosmic—the band eventually phased into working remotely as stay-at-home orders set in across the country. In that process, lead guitarist Trevor Young (formerly SOJA's guitar tech) took on a much greater role in the band's creative direction, co-producing alongside Hemphill and carefully shaping the album's hypnotic sound.“I really love that this record is a mix of all of us together in a room and all of us far apart,” said Hemphill. “It's something that I'd love to keep doing in the future: let's get together, let's get the vibe and the groove, and then let's go off into our own worlds and discover what's there.” SOJA deepens that communal spirit by collaborating with some of the biggest names from all corners of the reggae world including: UB40, Slightly Stoopid, Stick Figure, Dirty Heads, Rebelution, Common Kings, Mihali, Nanpa Básico, Eli Mac and more. And while each artist brings their own distinct sensibilities to the mix, all of the guest musicians are deeply aligned with the band's mission of uplifting the masses. For more than two decades, SOJA has elated audiences across the globe with their fresh yet timeless take on roots reggae, a sound born from their shared passion for making music that transports and inspires. The band was originally formed by a group of friends while still in middle school and has since built a massive, dedicated global fan base. In the years following, SOJA has headlined shows in over 30 countries around the world, generated 7 million social media fans and more than 1 billion streams. We want to hear from you!

In this episode I share the Desiderata, a powerful poem and message that was on the wall of the kwoon (our Kung Fu training space) and I would read it often during the time I was training for my black belt. It was a foundational message for my life and reading it again all these years later I still find it just as powerful. I hope you get something of value from this message. Desiderata: GO PLACIDLY amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. By Max Ehrmann © 1927 Original text Desiderata History Desiderata was written in 1927 by Max Ehrmann, a poet and lawyer from Terre Haute, Indiana. The word desiderata means “things that are desired.” Ehrmann said he wrote it for himself, “because it counsels those virtues I felt most in need of.” These virtues have been valued by countless others as Desiderata rose in popularity in the late '60s and early '70s. It is making a strong comeback today, as parents and grandparents are passing along this wisdom to their loved ones. The Desiderata history is an interesting one, as there has been confusion surrounding the author of this prose poem. It is often mistaken that it was written by an anonymous author in 1692 and was found in Old Saint Paul's Church. The Rev. Frederick Ward Kates was rector of the church from 1956 to 1961. During that time he used the words of Desiderata in a mimeographed booklet he gave to his parishioners to read. On the cover of the booklet was the church's name and year it was founded: “Old Saint Paul's Church, Baltimore, 1692.” The two became inextricably linked and even today it is hard to tear them apart. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/shambhalaliving/message

Medicine has become a pseudo-religion; our patients must be gently encouraged into apostasy and renunciation... [We have all] been enslaved by the medical–industrial complex, and it is time we rebelled. Society needs to reach a new accommodation with old age and death.Seamus O'Mahony, Can Medicine Be Cured (2019)Here is the silver lining: when you better understand your fragile life and the limitations of medicine, you will avoid getting sucked into a lot of useless nonsense. By 60, most people have some coronary artery disease; by 70, most have cancers growing somewhere. Nortin Hadler states the cold facts: “Any claim to a science that offers a path to longevity beyond eighty-five years is fatuous… over 85, you are off-warranty.” My pathologist friend Chris Gonzales adds, “something will get you, eventually.” He cuts up dead people for a living, so he knows.Worrying about your lifespan or expecting medicine to save you will not bring you peace. Instead, focus on your mission and the tasks. Be philosophical about your health as it declines. At the end of life, some people can become more grateful rather than more afraid because they have learned to treasure each moment. Max Ehrmann wrote, “Gracefully surrender the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.”My friend Dana understood this. He taught me what he could over his final year, and I loved him dearly. He had coronary artery disease with congestive heart failure, and for months, we knew he might die. He had always been optimistic, but during this period, he ignored all negativity and told me he felt better and better. He knew he had no time for regrets, complaints, whining, or worry. I realized later that we are in the same position as Dana every day of our lives.Support the show (https://paypal.me/dryohoauthor?locale.x=en_US)
