Since this podcast's inception, Anton Chigurh has been one of our most requested rogues. This week, we're playing a game of chance with this formidable foe as we finally dive deep into No Country for Old Men. Topics include: the origins of Cormac McCarthy's novel, the Coens process of adapting it, key differences between Chigurh's portrayal in the book vs the movie, reactions to the subversive final act, what the movie leaves out, the ways in which it might actually one-up the source material, and much more! Our decade by decade series moves into the 2000's, so to celebrate we're taking it back to the 80's with the Coen brothers best picture winner, No Country for Old Men. The boys open the show talking about tone in filmmaking, and just where it comes from. They discuss aging characters in a changing world, our lack of control, and the issues some people might have with the movie's ending. How did we get here? Well, if you ask Anton Chigurh, he'd say something crazy about a coin. If you ask us, we'd say whatever Anton wanted us to because we're scared of him. That's this week on Hell of a Picture.
Send us a textWelcome back to another blockbuster episode of Fabulous Film & Friends, our 95th to be precise, and I do apologize for the delay in production. But kids, I'm a working man and if you want a more reliable and steady stream of FFF episodes, be sure to like and subscribe to the channel on Youtube or Buzzsprout, et al. And by all means tell your friends about us! So! This week! We're going to make up for lost time and come out swinging to face not one but two of Joel and Ethan Coen's finest features in their impressively long and ever changing catalog of top hits: 2007's No Country for Old Men starring Tommy Lee Jones, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin, Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, Tess Harper, Stephen Root and Woody Harrelson and 2013's Inside Llewyn Davis starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake, Garrett Hedlund, Adam Driver, Max Casella, Stark Sands, F. Murray Abraham and John Goodman. I'm your host Gino Caputi and this week I have 80% of my team of the regulars back, starting with outdoorsman and frontier type from Salt Lake City Utah, no stranger to captive bolt stunners he, the one and only Burton Brown! Then there's my book smart kid sister Roseanne Caputi who has read all of Cormac McCarthy's novels 10x each, Texas Hypnotherapist and professional coin flipper Joe Field and the man whose peak years were spent sporting his signature Anton Chigurh Prince Valiant hairdo and black denim jacket, Gordon Alex Robertson! Before we cross into a never-ending circle of physical pain, broken-hearts and dashed dreams, the synopses: In No Country for Old Men the paths of Texas Sheriff Ed Tom Bell, a mysterious hitman named Anton Chigurh, and Vietnam veteran Llewellyn Moss collide when Moss stumbles upon $2 million at the site of a drug deal gone wrong. When Moss decides to keep the money, he finds himself in the crosshairs of the ruthless and relentless Chigurh, while Sheriff Bell struggles to keep up in a world spiraling beyond his control and comprehension. Inside Llewyn Davis chronicles a tumultuous but typical week in the life of its eponymous hero, an acerbic struggling folk singer in 1960s Greenwich Village. As Llewyn Davis ambles from gig to gig and friend's couch to friend's couch during a harsh New York winter, with a quick spirit-crushing sojourn to Chicago, he is faced with an unshakable truth that talent and artistic integrity may not be enough to break into an unforgiving music scene.Follow the FFF Facebook page!https://www.facebook.com/groups/fabulousfilmandfriends Like and subscribe on Youtube

Doomed fishing boat cabin ambience — We're back at the movies this week, spending an entire night searching for a great white on the Orca. The engine idles, the waves splut and gurgle, a tracking buoy bleeps in the waters just outside… (Ambience was inspired by the cabin conversation about scars and past traumas). That's right, we are off the coast of Amity Island and smack in the middle of the No Country for Old Men of fish movies: Jaws. I wouldn't want to run into either film's villains in some fictional back alley. But at least Anton Chigurh's methodical carnage was contained in realistic modern depravity and Texas. Bruce did his murders amongst the frolicking salt water taffy set on the Mackinac of Massachusetts: Martha's Vineyard. But don't worry — Bruce and Anton are not in this episode (nor are John Williams, Richard Dreyfus, and Mr. “SmileYouSunavaBitch”). In this episode, we are expanding the background interior cabin and outdoor sounds of the Orca (from around the chat about scars). It will be you alone on an idle little ship, waiting for a shark. Also, thank you, Kyle, for the Jaws suggestion — the original episode photo by Daniel Torobekov on Pexels.
This week we talk about two infamous bad guys, Anton Chigurh and Vincent. Justin heads to Texas to deal with an assassin with his review of No Country For Old Men (9:02). Then Kayla runs a few “errands” in LA in her review of Collateral (34:02). As always, we end with our Swarley of The Week and some Nostalgia Talk (52:39).

Beave and Len discuss some of the most terrifying "villains" in cinema history. From Darth Vader to Annie Wilkes to Bellatrix and everyone in between, we go through an hour's worth of despicable behavior by the people film goers love to hate. Who was the scariest? The most devious? Most overrated? And which villains had a point to their behavior? We cover it all (while forgetting so many along the way). Put some Jagbags in your ear!
Do you think it's getting harder to do good deeds in our modern society? Is the world getting worse, or has it always been this bad? In this second part to our previous episode, we continue our discussion on the Crime genre with an analysis of the Coen Brothers' thought-provoking film No Country For Old Men. We wrestle with this challenging commentary about the nature of arbitrary violence in our chaotic world. Llewelyn Moss stumbles upon dead bodies, $2 million and a hoard of heroin in a Texas desert, but methodical killer Anton Chigurh comes looking for it, with local sheriff Ed Tom Bell hot on his trail. The roles of prey and predator blur as the violent pursuit of money and justice collide. Check out Joseph's stop-motion films Want Derrick to analyze a film of your choice? David and Tamler dive into the Coen brothers' bleak and beautiful adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's 2005 novel "No Country for Old Men." What's the underlying philosophy that animates Anton Chigurh? Does he have a code of any kind, or is he just a ghostly symbol of human brutality and a pitiless indifferent universe? Does he represent a new kind of evil or is Sheriff Bell just getting old? What elements, if any, in the film are more dream than reality? And speaking of moral decline, a new Nature study claims that we have the illusory belief that people are getting worse - but can they really establish that it's an illusion? No Country For Old Men movie clips. Analysis by Fallopium Films after the clips (22:30). The movie takes place in 1980. A time before the existence of the Internet, eBay, and organized cybercrimes. Taking money under the false pretense of "no involvement/complicity" can have consequences. Especially when it is blood money with nefarious connections. "I decided to make you a special project of mine. You ain't gonna have to look for me at all." "When a man stumbles on a bloody crime scene... his decision to take the money sets off an unstoppable chain reaction of violence. As an enigmatic killer who determines the fate of his victims with the flip of a coin sets out in pursuit of Moss, the disillusioned Sheriff Bell struggles to contain the rapidly escalating violence that seems to be consuming his once-peaceful Lone Star State town." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bling-viera/message
God, who looks suspiciously like the Honeycomb monster, has given the keys to the underworld to our philosophers. Their mission: decide who goes where, and decide what they find when they get there. Then, gas-station attendant terrorizer Anton Chigurh goes toe-to-toe with the cleverest of girls.

A short and (as per usual) not terribly helpful episode this week in which we discuss the TAA injury. Anton Chigurh makes a slightly better showing (19:00) followed by a second consecutive insufferable performance from Pete in the La Ligarie recap (25:49), and then we place some bets.Opening and filler music by The Tan and Sober Gentlemen
We recap our gameweeks and celebrate Pete's success and then go through some must have players along with a list to keep an eye on. We then farm out the Anton Chigurh team because we are failures (51:25). Next is a La Ligarie Recap with more Pete celebration (61:30) and then go off the rails with some bets. Apologies for the technical difficulties, Pat may as well be trying to record this thing on Mars.Intro and filler music by the Tan and Sober Gentlemen: http://tanandsober.com/Please Rate and ReviewOpening and filler music by The Tan and Sober Gentlemen
Eventually, in about 40 weeks, we may figure out how to produce a quality podcast, but as the great Dr. Jonaz Poha once said in an ill-advised yet mildly watchable sequel, "Everything you are doing is bad." We recorded over 4 hours of content and lucky for you we could only use (or find) these 40ish minutes for your listening pleasure. A look forward to GW 3 and some more bad bets. Back next week with a regular pod, La Ligarie recap, and the Anton Chigurh squad update.Opening and filler music by The Tan and Sober Gentlemen

Call it, friendo! This week, we're unpacking the pure insanity that is Anton Chigurh. Javier Bardem won a well-deserved Oscar for sporting a page boy haircut and portraying a pure psychopath that haunts every frame of this incredible cinematic masterpiece from the Coen Brothers. We chart the similarities and differences between Cormac McCarthy's book and the film, and try to understand the particular brand of crazy that Chigurh represents. He's the most frightening villain to stalk the silver screen this century. A wraith. A serial killer who sees himself as an arm of fate, metering out justice at the flip of a coin and the hiss of a captive bolt gun. And as if that isn't enough, he thinks that page boy haircut was a good idea!

This week William is in York to chat with Robert Edgar, co-author of the new guide 'Adaptation for Screenwriters'. They discuss the Coen Brother's popular adaptation ‘No Country For Old Men', based on the book by Cormac McCarthy. Their conversation covers many interesting topics and ideas including the techniques the writers used to compress the timeline, some of the key differences that are apparent in the screenplay, what we mean when we talk about a film's faithfulness to a book, and the elusive nature of the story's antagonist Anton Chigurh.
