This episode kicks off, as always, with a touch of chaos. Bradshaw dips a toe into heterosexuality, Giana tries to steer the ship, and together they banter, bicker, and bulldoze through the boundaries of your typical yoga podcast. These two are not for the faint of heart (or the Yelp reviewer type). They curse, they care, and they actually know what they're talking about. Eventually, they get around to the topic: What the hell is Power Yoga, really? They break down the stereotypes versus the reality, name-drop OGs like Bryan Kest and Baron Baptiste, and call out the culty, hustle-y vibes of modern studio culture. Expect tangents galore- on breath, pacing, cueing, rushing, reverse revolved lunge disasters, and yes... the flippity flop flop (and you know exactly what they're talking about). They also ask a big question: How much is too much to challenge your students? There's a fine line between empowering and just plain exhausting. They dish on how long to hold poses, the art of connecting students to sensation, and when to push vs. when to back the hell off.Buckle up. This one's sweaty, spicy, and kind of sweet.UPCOMING RETREAT:Nicaragua Yoga Retreat for Students (February 2026): https://cayayogaschool.com/pages/nicaragua-retreatYoga Teachers Retreat: Costa Dulce, Nicaragua (MARCH 2026): https://cayayogaschool.com/pages/teachers-retreatBE PART OF OUR FUNNY FAM: https://www.cayayogaschool.com/communityPODCAST SUBSTACK: https://thefunnythingaboutyoga.substack.com/FOLLOW US:@thefunnythingaboutyoga @cayayogaschool @gianagambino @bradshawwishLINKS:https://www.cayayogaschool.com/https://www.gianayoga.com/ Hosted on Acast. Byron is a legendary yoga teacher in Bali - his classes at the famous Yoga Barn in Ubud are always packed, and are like no other class: you can speak up, not follow the sequence, make notes or meditate in the process…I asked him all about his path from Oklahoma to Los Angeles to Bali, from acting to teaching yoga, from teaching at Bryan Kest's studio up to creating “Empowerment yoga” and opening Empowered Bali studio in Canggu. We also talked about :✨ When and how do you start feeling that yoga is something more than physical exercise?✨ How yoga impacts ADHD and anxiety✨ How he mixes ancient yogic wisdom and modern approaches in his teaching✨ Developing his own style and unique classes and how transmission works in yoga class✨ Why Bali only lets committed people in and what's so special and spiritual about this place

Hello, everyone! Today, I will be talking about the Five Point Sequence, with a focus on the first point: Preparation. How does your past inform how you currently build preparation into your life? In this episode, I talk about the power of having a coherent preparation pattern, and how through somatic work we can go back on the timeline (timeline repair) and update and rewire patterning toward something that feels supportive and cohesive. In the end, I share my inquiry around biohacking for longevity. What is hyper-preparation (over-efforting control and forgetting to live life while you have it now), and what is coherent preparation? To support these thoughts I offer two poems, one by Max Ehrmann and the other by David Whyte. In this episode you'll learn: • [02:10] The Five Point Sequence by Ray Castellino and used in Alchemical Alignment • [05:40] Building Preparation into life • [10:33] Trauma physiology and preparation. • [15:03] Doing timeline repair to rewire and update patterns in the nervous system. • [17:10] Is biohacking for longevity hyper preparation or just preparation? • [21:44] Desiderata, by Max Ehrmann. • [25:34] What to Remember When Waking, by David Whyte. • [30:26] Takeaways from this episode. Quotes: “Not just thinking that I should be able to go from one thing to the next thing to the next. Preparation might even be a pause, ‘I'm going to take a pause. I'm going to notice my resources before I walk into that room, I'm going to notice my feet on the ground. I'm gonna broaden my surroundings. I'm going to notice my breath...'” -Sarah Tacy [07:40] “So if as a child, you felt unsafe when one shot when one parent came home, you probably became a pro at reading the room.” -Sarah Tacy [14:00] “When we get wrinkles, we get grays, and as our bodies become less agile, these are steps towards our big let go.” – Bryan Kest [18:27] “The more of the reserve we have, the better off we are.” – Peter Attia [19:01] “You are a child of the universe.” – Max Ehrmann [24:10] “What you can plan is too small for you to live.” – David Whyte [26:43] Connect with Sarah: Website: sarahtacy.com 21 Days of Untapped Support https://sarahtacy.com/21-days/ Lean for Nervous System Support: https://sarahtacy.com/lean/

Bryan Kest has been practicing yoga since 1979 and has been teaching since 1985. He developed his unique, distinctive style of yoga, called Power Yoga, in 1979. Over the years, this style, an amazing workout for the body, mind and spirit, has made him a well-known, popular teacher across the country and around the world. His mainstream popularity is matched by an authentic foundation in the ancient practice of yoga and a long path of development as a yogi (a practitioner of yoga). At age 15, Bryan uprooted from his native Detroit home to make a life change in Hawaii. He moved to live with his father, a doctor, who understood the benefits of yoga. Like many of us, Bryan originally thought yoga was nothing more than strange contortions, but that changed when his father introduced him to a physical style of yoga called Ashtanga. This appealed to him immediately, and he soon observed great changes in himself, both physically and mentally. Yoga quickly became his passion, one that would take him to India for a year to study with one of the greatest yoga masters of the world, Pattabhi Jois. He has been continuing on his yoga path ever since. Bryan founded two studios in Santa Monica, CA. He also teaches at workshops and retreats around the world; provides an intensive Teacher Training program; and is featured in his own Warner Brothers video series from 1995, as well as a newer video series and audio CD series. His most recent endeavor is Power Yoga Online. This online tool features streaming videos of Bryan's classes, along with programs and series including a Teacher Training meant to help support and deepen one's yoga practice. These are usually recorded live and streamed to students around the world. For articles by Bryan and more information about Power Yoga, visit Power Yoga.
The Yogi Show | Yoga, Mindfulness, and Gratitude with a Touch of Humor
Born in 1964, Bryan Kest has been practicing yoga since 1979, starting when he was 14 years old. He initially studied in Hawaii with David Williams, the first person to bring Ashtanga yoga to America. He then studied in India with K. Pattabhi Jois, the main proponent of Ashtanga yoga. Bryan Kest has been teaching yoga since 1985. "My primary objective", says Kest, "besides turning more and more people on to a healthier, more peaceful lifestyle that continually challenges them to grow, is to teach a system of exercise that fully integrates the body, mind, and spirit. The new trend towards yoga is not surprising, given that the body is limited and the mind is limitless. The combination of body and mind creates an incredibly broad range of fulfillment, including top physical condition and a calm, peaceful, clear mind." David Williams has been practicing yoga daily, without interruption, since 1971. In 1972 while he was at Dr. Swami Gitananda's Ananda Ashram in Pondicherry, South India, he met Manju, the son of K. Pattabhi Jois, and saw him demonstrate the Ashtanga Yoga Primary series. In 1973, he began learning Ashtanga Yoga from K. Pattabhi Jois at his home in Mysore, India. David was one of the first non-Indian students to be taught the complete Ashtanga Yoga system of asanas and pranayama directly from Jois and became one of the first to be certified to teach the Ashtanga Yoga asanas. He was also one of the very few people ever certified by Jois to teach the Ashtanga Yoga pranayama. In 1975 David, along with Nancy Gilgoff organized and sponsored Pattabhi Jois and Manju’s first visit to Encinitas, California and introduced them to America and the western world. David is responsible for teaching the Ashtanga Yoga system to many of the world’s leading teachers and practitioners, including David Swenson, Doug Swenson, Danny Paradise, Cliff Barber, Batiste Marceau, Bryan Kest, Jonny Kest, Clifford Sweatte, Tracy Rich, Chuck Miller, Maty Ezraty, Kathy Cooper, and Andrew Eppler. David is 65 years old. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has lived on the island of Maui, Hawaii, since l976. His book My Search For Yoga was 10 years in the making and is his story as a yoga detective from the age of 20. Focusing on the years between 1970 and 1977 throughout Europe, two overland trips to India, and the early days in the Carolinas, Florida, California, and Maui. It includes crazy stories that he has shared in his classes over the years. and highlights the characters who were a part of his journey. The book contains 132 rare color images including photos, original documents of the Ashtanga syllabus and 12 letters from Pattabhi Jois.
The Maverick-On-Air hosts its seventh episode with Bryan Kest who is one of the most celebrated and sought after Yoga teachers in the world. For more than 40 years, Bryan has studied, practiced and led more than 24,000 yoga classes. He is the creator of Power Yoga, a holistic yoga practice for the mind, body and spirit that is a unique integration of traditional asana and mental practices, designed to enhance everyday living. He began practicing yoga at the age of 14 after meeting David Williams, the first person to bring Ashtanga Yoga to the United States. Join me, VS Kugan, as I seek to understand what exactly is yoga, what it is not and how you can integrate this timeless practice to your everyday life to achieve peak physical and mental well being.
The goal of yoga is simple, to cease the fluctuations of the mind. To heal the mind virus that has so many people existing within loops of negative thought, doubt, and fear. Being fooled by the mind into believing there is no way out when the recipe to freedom is perhaps the most straightforward thing anyone could practice, and it starts with paying attention. Simple, yes. Easy, no. The battle of the mind is the greatest challenge a human can take on, but it is the only battle we must wage to align with our truth. We are powerful, loving beings who have been sold lies and programming that do not serve our highest good. This is not a conspiracy, just the product of an ego-centric world and the outward search for answers and peace. It is our collective mission as citizens of this earth to raise our consciousness above the deluded messages and towards truth. The yogis have been sharing this message for thousands of years. In this episode, we sit down with Bryan Kest, a well-known yogi, and teacher of said truth. Bryan began practicing yoga at the age of 14 and entered his first ten-day Vipassana meditation course at the age of 24. Bryan is the creator of Power Yoga and owner of Santa Monica Power Yoga & Meditation, which, for decades, has held the unique business model of being a donation-based studio. Bryan has led more than 24,000 classes and leads workshops, trainings, and retreats throughout the world and online with one distinct objective, to strengthen the benevolent and eradicate the malevolent. I met Bryan years ago in Newport, RI, during one of his weekend workshops held at Newport Power Yoga. I chauffeured Bryan to and from the studio throughout his stay. I remember feeling a bit inadequate as I pulled up to meet him in our beat-up, dog-hair filled Subaru, but quickly I was at ease by Bryan's kindness and good conversation. I experienced one of his LSD classes that weekend, and I have not forgotten the transformative nature of holding a forward fold for ten minutes. We imagine the timing of this episode is the product of the perfection of divine timing. We hope you enjoy this compassionate yogi who is as loving as he is fiery. We are grateful every time you tune into the YogiTriathlete podcast, we are 100% listener-supported and would love your inclusion as a patron on patreon.com/yogitriathlete. We would not exist without this community. Thank you. Namaste - Jess

Surrounded by loss, Melanie discovered Yoga and it became her companion. More than just moving her body into interesting shapes, Yoga became a healing balm, responding to her agitated nervous system - unresolved grief, trauma, anxiety she couldn’t name or touch. “The egg has been cracked, and I am the yoke running free.” By quieting the mind and reducing stress in the body, we can make decisions from a place of power. Furthermore, we can celebrate the female body and heal the wounds between women. Tender curiosities: Learn how to access peace of mind and move from “following the thought train.” Learn how to listen to your body vs. doing what your mind thinks you should be doing. How does grief show up in my body? What to do when you feel trapped with racing thoughts. Feminist Spirituality can transform the way we relate to ourselves, other women, and the world. It allows us to step into our power, and step out of our own way. It can fortify, strengthen, and uplift us. Resources: In Yoga and Body Image, an incredible, first-of-its-kind book, twenty-five authors, including Alanis Morrisette, Seane Corn, Bryan Kest, and Dr. Sara Gottfried, discuss how yoga and body image intersect. With these inspiring personal stories, learn how yoga not only affects your body but also how it affects the way you feel about your body. Collectively, we can make space for yoga that is body positive and accessible to the full range of human diversity. With a special emphasis on how you can take action to build community and challenge destructive attitudes and structures, Yoga Rising is a resource for the continuing work of healing ourselves and our world as we move toward liberation for all.

Today's guest is Melanie Klein, a professor of Sociology and Women's Studies, co-founder of the Yoga and Body Image Coalition, and author of the new book, Yoga Rising: 30 Empowering Stories from Yoga Renegades for Every Body. Her work has made her a respected leader in the conversation around yoga and body image. In this interview, we talk about how she came to be such an advocate for the positive body image movement. Plus, since I am a former editor for Yoga Journal, we have a candid conversation about how media has contributed to this dialogue--for better and worse. Here are some highlights: * Melanie tells her "body story" and how yoga helped her move from an unhealthy preoccupation with her body to body acceptance * I learn the phrase "the body project" -- the idea that we spend so many resources working on our bodies in hopes that one day we'll be "perfect" -- and I feel like a giant lightbulb has been turned on. What would the world be like if women redirected all of that time, energy, money, and brain power toward other projects? * The ways that being a yoga practitioner has perpetuated "the body project" for both of us * The calling that Melanie felt to start YBIC * How yoga teacher, Bryan Kest, helped Melanie shape her views on body image Show notes: http://www.jasonyoga.com/podcast/episode124 SHOUT-OUT TO OUR SPONSORS1. Yoga is about hot bods, yoga pants and crazy poses isn’t it? Well hang on to your hamstrings in this episode, as today we get some strong answers from Bryan Kest, one of the big names in the yoga industry who has been teaching Yoga around the world for almost 35 years. You could call him an expert. Bryan breaks down what yoga is all about, from the physical side to the meditative side, but we get into a lot of areas, some frankly which might ruffle some feathers. One sacred cow that Bryan takes on is today’s culture of hardcore fitness which is to push your body to extremes like in crossfit or weightlifting, basically any type of extreme exercise where you are trying to change your body. This might piss off a lot of people who are pushing hard (which I somewhat do myself), but you can’t argue with the logic of Bryan’s basic premise which is “the harder you are on anything the faster you destroy it.” It applies to used cars. It can apply to relationships. And it applies directly to fitness. If you are into fitness, wellness (they are not the same), and especially if you are trying to reduce stress in your life and get centered, then take a listen. To find out more about Bryan Kest and yoga go to his site www.PowerYoga.com where you can also avail of streaming yoga classes. Emily, a Toronto native, was first introduced to yoga in New York City where she was studying theater and the art of becoming an anxiety-ridden insomniac! At the time, the thought of Yoga meant slowing down, which meant terrifying and seemed better suited for “hippies” and “tea people”, not she! But after accidentally stumbling into her first class, she was shocked to discover that this “slowing down” was not only the most challenging sweaty work-out she’d ever had, but for the first time in ages, she felt calm. Excited and inspired to learn more, she began her study and practice of Yoga. Emily completed one of Moksha Yoga’s first 800-hour teacher trainings in Thailand where she was lucky enough to study with Susi Hately Aldous, Ted Grand and Jessica Robertson, Frank Boccio, and more. It was on this trip that Emily, Deena and Jess planted the seed of a distant dream to one day open Moksha Yoga LA… Cut to: Years later. Emily now lives in LA, teaches Yoga privately all over LA, is the creator of Yoga Theater for Kids (which she taught in schools, and foster youth programs throughout Los Angeles), has just finished performing her LA debut of her One-woman show…when Deena said something like “Ok, so are you ready to open up Moksha Yoga LA yet now, or what??”, to which she said yes and the rest is history. Emily is grateful to her teachers both present and past such as Annie Carpenter, Kia Miller, Bryan Kest, Gurmukh, Liz Olesky, Jasmine Lieb, the Robertson Family tree, her wonderful meditation mentors, Jeanne Pisano and Ken McLeod and to her students, the greatest teachers of all. Emily also has a passion for philanthropic work. Within the first two years of being open, Moksha Yoga LA raised over $160,000 for charities around the world. Founder of Sweat for Change has raised $115,000 for Little Kids Rock
Join Anna K. as she interviews Larry Thraen... Yoga discovered me when I was training for marathons. In order to keep my body well despite an intense weekly running regimen, I intuitively combined stretching with my breath. Later, I attended my first yoga class in NYC and I discovered that I had been doing yoga all along. Known in Nicaragua as Yoga Larry, I'm a Vinyasa style powerful flow instructor who has spent the majority of my teaching career in Nicaragua. Since 1998 I studied extensively in Los Angeles under Vinnie Marino, Bryan Kest, Annie Carpenter, Steve Ilg, Mark Blanchard and Kathryn Budig. I teach from life experience and incorporate traditional wisdom of the Tibetan Diamond Sutras, A Course in Miracles, and transpersonal psychology. I lead several international yoga teacher trainings, retreats and workshop and continue to further myself through continued wellness education. When not running, mountain biking; surfing; or traveling, I may be found 'flying' acro partners throughout Houston and searching for 'hole in the wall' eats. See more here!
Welcome to Everything Yoga: Smart, Simple & Straightforward with your host Meagan McCrary, giving yoga a real voice from a practical perspective. L.A.-based yoga teacher and freelance writer, Meagan McCrary has immersed herself in the American yoga scene, taking classes, researching and interviewing prominent teachers for her upcoming book, “Pick Your Yoga Practice: Exploring and Understanding Different Styles of Yoga” (New World Library, 2014). Today's podcast features an personal interview with Beryl Bender Birch, the author of "Power Yoga." People, especially gym folks, love their Power Yoga. What most people don't realize is that Power Yoga is essentially Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga made American. Beryl Bender Birch (on the east coast) and Bryan Kest (on the west coast) were both studying, practicing, and teaching Ashtanga Yoga when they both decided to coin the term Power Yoga to make the practice more accessible to all Americans. Beryl explains that the practice is still spiritual, although minus the overtly esoteric, becuase it's yoga. The two go hand-in-hand. She also talks shop on beginners, alignment and the importance of learning from a skilled teacher. She warns against jumping right into a full-on Power Yoga class and why yoga is different from any sport, workout, or physical activity: Just becuase you're a strong athlete doesn't mean yoga's going to be a breeze. That, and so much more, in today's interview with Power Yoga Guru, Beryl Bender Birch. To connect with her visit: facebook.com/meaganmccraryyoga and please feel free to message Meagan with any questions or topics you'd like to see covered concerning yoga, and she'll do her best to address them on the show.
