Break the Ceiling

Consistency is the underlying premise behind maintenance mode, behind working the system, behind the mantra of "don't break it". It's the opposite of shiny object syndrome. When you're consistent with your offers and your messaging, people know who you are, what you stand for, and what you sell. When you're consistent in your operations, your team and your clients know exactly what to do next. When you're consistent, you're efficient and you don't waste time, effort, or money.Consistency means that you don't get exhausted by decision fatigue - because a lot of your daily decisions have already been made and you're just following the process you decided on a while ago.Consistency builds resilience. Even when you're operating at 10%, having built habits and processes means that you can keep the ball rolling. In order to become more consistent in your business, there are two things you have to figure out.First, you have to get your mindset wrapped around being consistent and prioritizing it. That sounds simple, but in my experience, it's just not. It's so easy to self-sabotage by getting distracted or bored or prioritizing other things.Second, once you know that consistency is an important value to you, you have to build habits and design your environment so that being consistent is actually the easiest path for you to take.If consistency is the goal, building habits is how you accomplish it.Meet Sarah. Sarah Von Bargen is a writer, coach, and educator who helps people spend their time, money, and energy on purpose. And she uses habits to make sure they're sticking to that purpose. Habits have been a critical component in her own business success and in the success of her students, too.Listen to the full episode to hear: How the stress of flying by the seat of her pants turned Sarah into a data-driven planner How changing your exterior circumstances–like charging your phone in another room–supports the interior work that builds lasting habits How Sarah uses a “think about it later” list to help keep herself from productive procrastination and shiny object syndrome Why you should test shiny new ideas on social media or your blog to gauge interest before you spend time or money developing them Learn more about Sarah Von Bargen: Yes and Yes Instagram: @yesandyesblog Money & Happy Facebook Group Free Workbook: How To Rescue The Time & Energy To Go After What You Want Learn more about Susan: Scalespark.co Twitter @ScaleSpark LinkedIn @thesusanboles

The types  include Nurturers, Adventure Guides, Door Openers, Steady Presences, and Celebrators.  Discover your genius type here.Season 5: Marketing HotseatsI decided that I needed to show the magic of people’s deepest why in action.  In Season 5 of Marketing for Humans, I get to do this. I put myself in a Marketing Hotseat,  invite dynamic entrepreneurs as my guests, and act as my guest’s marketing consultant for 45 minutes or so.  If you want some calmer, more authentic marketing ideas, these are your episodes. Sometimes, you’ll even get the input of my colleague, Jenn Wentworth, a digital marketing expert based in New Hampshire. Today I’m doing a Marketing Hotseat with Sarah Prescott, a dog trainer based in Wenham, MA.  Sarah has helped me train my own Norwich Terrier, and it turns out that she raised puppies at the  Guide Dogs for the Blind in California. There,  she gained deep satisfaction in teaching young pups to grow into well-socialized Guide Dogs. After tons of research and testing, Sarah has her own method, where it’s all about personal discipline and leadership absolutely essential to train a dog effectively.  Sarah is a Celebrator, which means she wants to bring the good life to others and does so with her own special flair. For this week’s interview I met with Sarah Berneche. We had an amazing conversation, and were able to really go deep on the layers of food restriction! No matter where you are in your journey, it’s always worth considered how restrictions might be popping up in your life! (Not too long ago, I shared about my own process of needing to let go of restrictions again as well!) Ready to Ditch the Guilt + Body Shame to Gain Confidence + Feel Free? Check out my newest workshop! It’s an hour long, available on-demand, and FREE! Meet Sarah! Sarah Berneche is an intuitive eating counselor and registered holistic nutritionist. She considers herself a nutrition therapist, and most of her clientele consists of women dealing with disordered eating and body image. She shares that in her early years, she had a “normal” relationship with food. Post-puberty, however, she began getting bullied for her new, larger body. At that point, she began to feel that she no longer wanted this body. Shortly after, she learned about the WW points system. This led her down the rabbit hole of diets. Sarah spent years trying to manage how she felt about her body by controlling it with food restrictions. Over the years, her diets morphed into disordered eating. In the midst of her unhealthy food relationships, she completed her dietary training and began working as a nutritionist. During a corporate nutrition training, someone asked if they were allowed to eat yogurt with fruit in the bottom. That question struck her — Sarah realized that pushing people to eat only certain “good” foods and to restrict themselves from the pleasure or joy of food wasn’t in line with her values. Healing Food Relationships As she studied and grew in her own understanding, Sarah learned more about intuitive eating, health at every size, and the body positive movement. Having healed her own food relationship, she became passionate about helping other women have the same experience. One thing Sarah notices is that many women want intuitive eating to be a clear journey with a specific destination. There is a desire to “arrive”! With intuitive eating, however, there are many phases to the journey. Rather than trying to finish the journey, it will likely feel better to enjoy each step along the way. Another important point: many women have a relationship with dieting built on years of practice. Transitioning to intuitive eating is a practice as well. You should plan to invest in it, just like you would with any new relationship! Along the way, you’ll likely notice that sometimes that old dieting relationships tries to get back into your life! That’s normal – and you have the ability to choose, each and every time, which relationship you would rather invest in for the long run! The Layers of Food Restrictions Even when you’ve been eating intuitively for years, you may find restrictions popping up in your life! Sarah shares that the layers of food restrictions can be like the 100 layer crepe cakes. Every time you peel one back, it seems like there is another one ready to take its place! You may notice this happening physically — whether that’s the temptations to calorie count, control portion sizes, or restrict specific items. At some point, we start to move into more mental and psychologic concerns as well. For example, being a “better person” if you eat clean or maintain a smaller size. We also tend to have a lot of fear around things like carbs, fat, or other foods we may have demonized during our dieting journey. Many women tend to think that if they stop dieting, their food will be different. Sarah notes that this is true, but it’s not the only change! You’ll be a different person too! Your dieting came about for a reason, often a much deeper reason than we tend to acknowledge. You may have been managing anxiety, stress, or old traumas with your previous restriction/binging cycles. You may have used dieting to bond or connect with other women or people you care about. Dieting may have helped you cope with feeling inadequate. When you STOP restricting, a lot can come up! Dieting Makes us Feel Safe Diets have served a purpose in our lives! Because of that, they have a certain amount of security attached. When we start intuitive eating and release diets, we need to reconsider the coping mechanisms and tools we use to allow ourselves to still feel safe. After addressing the physical food restrictions connected to her diets, Sarah had to dive deep on the emotional needs that she had been using diets to manage! From romantic relationships to personal connections to inadequacies and other core wounds — Sarah found that when she stopped restricting, she was faced with many old feelings and hurts she had never truly addressed. Dieting had never been about “just” losing weight. When we talk about food and body, we are never just talking about food and body. There are so many deep, core needs connected to what we eat! There are so many layers of food restriction that we’ll need to be willing to pass through! Life Gets Better Without Diets The diet industry creates a problem (making us feel inadequate and broken) and then offering a solution (start dieting!). In the process of ending that relationship, we get to start rebuilding our core beliefs about who we are. Intuitive eating allows us to peel back all of the layers and messaging and become our truest, most authentic selves. Sarah shares that the more she does this work, the fuller her life becomes. With less restriction, she experiences more abundance. She’s found herself more conscious of connections, wholeness, and gratitude in many areas of her life. Rather than trying to get to the smallest size (and then intending to treat herself well at that later point), she’s able to treasure and value herself today, just as she is. She’s also seen an increase in the strength of her friendships and connections. Intuitive eating has enabled her to open herself to body positivity, social justice, and more care and concern for others and for the world around us.

Bark & Wag is in the CBD business. It is very important to work with a herbalist grower to make the sure the product does not have pesticides. For more questions please contact Sarah at sjmarr707@gmail.com.  Here is an article about Herb Farms.  Many people are drawn to herbalism, not only because plants are natural or contain healing qualities, but also because being an herbalist can bring you closer to the Earth.  It’s not unusual to see herbalists with dirt under their fingernails who never leave home without their botanical ID books or a trusted wildcrafting tool.  We like to plunge our hands into the dirt, spend time with the plants in their native habitats, or simply with herbs growing freely in a garden.  (Read Sue Kusch's articles on the benefits of working with soil here). While many herbalists love to gather their own herbs, it’s not always possible to do so. Some herbalists may choose to spend their time consulting with clients, making herbal products or teaching classes.  When you aren’t able to gather your own herbs, buying from a small herbal farmer or ethical wildcrafter is the next best thing. Not only is the quality often incredible, you are also supporting what we want to see more of in this world:  Small-scale organic and sustainable farms instead of concrete buildings.  Family-operated businesses, or businesses that support their employees with living wages and benefits, rather than large corporate entities most interested in making a buck.  Local economies rather than shipping herbs from far away places.  Sustainable Herbs Project For more information about the importance of sourcing our herbs sustainably I highly recommend the Sustainable Herbs Project. Created by Ann Ambrecht and funded by almost 1,000 herbalists, this site explores many of the important issues facing the herbal industry. I hope every herbalist is familiar with this important work.    317Save I am frequently asked about small scale herbal farms, but until now I’ve never had an extensive resource list to send folks to. Thank you to Val who researched and compiled this list for the USA and to Tiffany Traverse for compiling the list for Canada!  My intention is to provide herbalists an easy way to find their own local farmers and wildcrafters. While it certainly doesn’t contain every farm out there, we did our best to make it a comprehensive by-state list of small herb farms and ethical wildcrafters. This specifically means people who are offering fresh and/or dried plant material and, in some instances, fresh whole plants.  In choosing the herb farms and wildcrafters, we looked for websites that clearly reflected the availability of plant material. (Educational farms, personal gardens, and herbal products aren't included.) Disclaimer: I have not received herbs or any other kinds of perks from most of the farmers and wildcrafters on this list. This list is not an endorsement of quality.    Do You Want to be Added to this List? Welcome to the very first episode of the GroWise Be Well podcast! In this episode, we introduce you to our founder Sarah Southwell, whose empowering story shaped GroWise Be Well’s mission. Sarah shares her journey which begins in 2002 when she decided to kick her addiction to speed. While facing debilitating withdrawal symptoms, Sarah sought out medical help and soon became used to hearing, “nothing is wrong with you.” Instead of giving up, Sarah talks about how she began researching how to cope with her withdrawal, leading her to create a toolbox of healing methods. In the process Sarah learned about the value of people, love, joy, and that she was working towards making the best life that she could imagine. Similar to her challenge with addiction, Sarah discusses how she struggled to find help when coping with postpartum depression, and then later, with supporting her child through sensory processing disorder. By trusting her intuition and diligently researching each issue, Sarah was able to develop an even greater toolbox of healing methods. Everything that Sarah has been through has led her to founding GroWise Be Well — a platform for her to spread love, open up her toolbox, and use her knowledge to help people. Key Points From This Episode:Sarah talks about her experience kicking her drug addiction. How unhealthy perceptions about weight led a young Sarah to her speed addiction.Sarah’s experiences of withdrawal while on a photography trip to Scotland. The lack of available answers to help those struggling through withdrawal. A 6th grade science teacher, a field trip to the Cosmosphere, lots of hard work, several advanced degrees, and a NASA internship has all been a influential part of Dr. Sarah Wallace’s journey.  Dr. Sarah Wallace has always been in love with space, and through her work at NASA, she’s found her calling. As a microbiologist, Sarah serves as the principal investigator for the Biomolecule Sequencer, allowing DNA to be sequenced in space on board the International Space Station. Talking to Sarah is like talking to your best friend, if your best friend happens to be a super-smart, yet down-to-Earth NASA microbiologist!  Beth and Sarah energetically enjoy discussing:    The Kansas Cosmosphere and how it fostered the joy and inspiration for Sarah to understand space  How we are all just walking bacteria…  What it’s like to see her experiments be flown on the International Space Station, including the first ever DNA sequencer in space!  AND, having a space wedding. Not just a space-themed wedding, I mean, a serious space nerd let’s-take-this-all-the-way SPACE wedding. Short of actually having it IN space.   About Dr. Sarah: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaEqVYw7O3g Taken from adafruit.com: Dr. Sarah Wallace is currently is the NASA Microbiologist and Principal Investigator for the Genes in Space-3 Project aboard the International Space Station (ISS). She works at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. Dr. Wallace conducts research to understand how the environment in space alters the behavior of microbes and runs her tests aboard the ISS. This will help us to one day identify microbes in-flight. The recent Biomolecule Sequencer (MinION) that Wallace worked on, showed that DNA sequencing in space is possible.     BONUS SHOW NOTES & QUOTES:  On being a female in microbiology: “I had a pretty even split of females and males in my graduate classes, and at my lab here at NASA, we have TONS of female scientists, and it’s really exciting! I have several female colleagues that started with me right out of their undergrad or Ph. D. programs and have blossomed into become these phenomenal scientists! I feel like things are really opening up for anyone who is qualified and passionate, and it’s no longer a stereotypical ‘man’s world’. I got to meet with some of the women from the Apollo mission, and most of them were assistants. Now, females are running the divisions and the directorates, and females leading as subject matter experts in all disciplines. It’s really great to see how big that change has been since Apollo.   Sarah attended Wichita State and loved microbiology, and molecular biology. Determined to find a graduate program that had both, Sarah found the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. The NASA connection and fellowships in the life sciences through NASA allowed Sarah to conduct most of her research at the NASA Johnson Space Center for her Ph.D. dissertation.  “It’s been a rewarding path, steppingstones often presented themselves to me, AND, I worked REALLY hard to make that happen. I was laser focused to get to NASA.”    About Being a Part of the Team to Put the First DNA Sequencer on Station: “If you just stop and think about it, something that’s very complex on Earth, sequencing DNA, has become commonplace in space! We have DNA sequencing in space! We have been sequencing DNA on board ISS since 2016. To date, we’ve done about 30 sequencing runs with about 6 different astronauts. Why that’s important: it’s been not only an incredible achievement, and there are SO many applications… from my area we monitor the station (air and water microbes) and we have no way to do that unless we bring the samples back to Earth, which does not set us up very well as we try to move away from low-Earth orbit and not be dependent on sample return.  My team developed a method where we could go all the way from sample to answer not only to fly the sequencer, but we developed all the preparation methods to take a swab of anything really and sequence the microbial DNA from that swab. The things we find are common and they are the same things we find in your room. ISS is incredibly clean.    About What’s Next: “I have colleagues who are interested in getting in the human health domain. We know humans are changing in response to spaceflight. The hows and whys and what’s really going on are not widely known, so this technology can be very powerful in helping us understand this better. Based on an astronaut’s genetic makeup, there could be a “eat this, do this kind of exercise” monitoring to understand if they are responding favorably or poorly to the recommendations (based on the sequencing) and really get into a precision medicine type approach. This (sequencing technology) is definitely something that I see moving into a doctor’s office for everyone’s benefit.    On DNA and RNA sequencing and epigenetics- “Yes, there’s absolutely ways that we ourselves are regulating what genes are turned on or off through these mechanisms, HOW that’s happening and to what responses are the types of questions that we are looking to answer right now.”    On What Happens When Girls Get to Meet Sarah (as a Doctor, as a Scientist, as a NASA researcher for Station): “It’s surreal.” Between all of the amazing opportunities I’ve had since we launched the sequencer in 2016 until now, I’ve had more people ask for my autograph and to take selfies with me.. it’s like, ‘what is happening? I’m just a nerd!’ It’s incredible and it makes me feel so good. NASA has a video series called, “What’s on Board?” and I was fortunate to talk about the DNA sequencer. There was a young girl in the audience interested in science journalism, and she came up to me after the program and said to me, ‘You are NOT what I expected a NASA scientist to be!’ It made me feel really good because obviously I connected with her.”    What’s On the Horizon: “I look forward to when we can address those opportunities with cutting edge technologies, making sure we’re making the environment safe for the crew, and then using these technologies to learn more about what happens to life in space.  We are at the cusp of this really exciting time where we know things change, but we don’t really understand the hows and the whys and the next decade is really going to start to shine light into these answers, and I’m excited to see NASA using these technologies to understand what’s happening in space with cellular life.”   MORE!!!!
