Miserly Ways-Hetty': Scrooge in Hoboken Hetty Green, the "Witch of Wall Street," was a real-life figure known for her extreme frugality and sharp business acumen. Her story bears similarities to the fictional character Scrooge in that both were immensely wealthy and known for their miserly ways. However, there are key differences. Hetty Green's wealth was not inherited, but rather amassed through her own shrewd investments. She was a pioneer in the field of finance, particularly in the area of short selling. Unlike Scrooge, who hoarded his wealth, Green invested her money wisely, often during financial crises. While Scrooge's miserliness was largely driven by greed and a lack of empathy, Green's frugality was more strategic. She lived a simple life and avoided unnecessary expenses, allowing her to accumulate vast wealth. She was also known for her generosity, donating millions of dollars to charity anonymously. Hetty Green's life in Hoboken was marked by both controversy and admiration. She was often criticized for her stinginess and eccentric behavior, but she was also respected for her financial acumen and philanthropic efforts. Her story is a fascinating example of a woman who achieved great success in a male-dominated field, despite facing significant challenges and prejudice. now, I would like to create a mnemonic about Ebenezer Scrooge meeting Hetty Green as The Ghost of Xmas Yet to Come. I authored a series of Scrooge based holiday episodes based on his three visits by the Ghosts in a Christmas Carol. Our unwillingness to tithe certainly is a contradiction to this truth. The Lord spoke through Moses and said, “The tithe…is the Lord's!” (Leviticus 27:30) Exclamation point – not a question mark. That statement means that 10% of our income should be given each week, or each month, to the work of the Lord through His church. The other 90% should also be managed wisely. Five Biblical Reasons Every Christian Should Be a Tither OBEDIENCE Genesis 14:20 tells us that Abraham tithed before the Law was given by Moses at Sinai. Malachi 3:10 summarizes what the Law required. Everyone was required to tithe everything they had. Matthew 23:23 shows us that our Lord Jesus recommended everyone to tithe. I Corinthians 16:2 indicates that tithing is still a part of God's expectations from his children. HONESTY In Malachi 3:8-10 the Bible teaches that if we do not tithe, we are robbing God! Isn't it unthinkable that a Christian would steal from anyone – much less, his God? We must continually remind ourselves that we do not give the tithe – we simply return it! It already belongs to God. LOVE In John 14:15 Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” Nothing will loosen the purse strings like good, old fashioned Christian love! We give the best gifts to those we love! GRATITUDE In Psalm 116:12-14 the Lord reminds us that since we have received so much, we should respond by giving much! We have received God's Son, His salvation, His presence, His blessings, and we will receive His Heaven…How can we think of giving Him less than a tithe? FAITH God has promised a blessing to those who are faithful in the Stewardship of Giving! See Malachi 3:10-11; Proverbs 3:9-10; Matthew 6:33; Luke 6:38. Faith in God's promises is reflected by obedience to His Word! REQUIREMENT “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse…” RESPONSE “…and test me now in this…” REWARD “…open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you a blessing until it overflows.” (Malachi 3:10) My Response – My commitment to tithe is based upon the following truths: God owns everything (my tithe is returned, not given). God expects me to tithe (Malachi 3:10). God promises to meet the needs of a faithful steward (tithing is an issue of trust). Therefore, I commit the first 10% of my income to the Lord through Plainfield Christian Church. ( ) I will begin tithing ( ) I already tithe ( ) I would like to set up a Breeze account to give online. The genre can spark an interest in the sciences and is cited as the impetus for the career choice of many scientists. I think we might've struck on the very reason that we have this Covid outbreak in Auckland right now:  Families can't afford to stay home and isolate for two weeks The government support money is too miserly. We've been told this is the very reason that families of Papatoetoe High School students didn't isolate for the full two weeks they were supposed to: because they need money, so they have to work. And today, a guy called Jeff phoned Kerre's show to say a very similar thing. He was at Kmart when the infected worker was there so he is expected to stay home for the full two weeks He says he can't afford to stay home on the government and, this is what should be ringing alarm bells for health authorities, if he'd known that he would have to stay home on this money, he wouldn't have admitted he was at Kmart. Which is to say, he would've pretended he wasn't there and taken his chances potentially spreading Covid, because he needs to earn a crust. And what's worse, he won't' be putting his hand up again. He told Kerre: “I will be deleting my Covid scanning app and I won't be coming forward again if I've been to a place of interest. It's just not worth it.”And judging by the texts coming in afterwards, Jeff wasn't alone in saying he's not playing ball anymore  The truth is the government isn't enough. The payment for a full time worker each week is $585.80. That might not sound that bad by itself, but annualise, and it's $30,400. That's not a lot - the hourly rate, is $14.6, that's not even the minimum wage .I wish I could tell the government was open to raising the payment but listen to Chris Hipkins yesterday.“We are never going to be able to compensate everybody for every eventuality for every cost that they may occur as part of our Covid-19 response.”That's just not good enough.Right now, we are hoping that 1525 students and teachers at Papatoetoe High School, and 1251 people at Kmart are doing the right thing and self-isolating. We don't have people chasing them up. We don't know if everyone who was at Kmart has stuck their hands up and said they were there. This is a high trust model the government is running. We've seen how it can go wrong just in the last week. So, if we want these people staying home for the full two weeks and scanning into places in the future, then this payment has got to increase to a liveable level.Because the alternative, which is sending us all home for two weeks, is too expensive.

It’s nice to have the Champions League back, isn’t it? Like a nice mug of warm cocoa on a cold midweek night. We give this week’s round of fixtures a thorough going over on today’s episode of On The Continent, which features Andy Brassell, Lars Sivertsen and David Cartlidge! We begin with Atlético Madrid’s hugely impressive win over Liverpool at the Wanda Metropolitano. We discuss the unwavering influence of Saúl Ñíguez on this Atléti side and their unrelenting commitment to miserly defending that infuriates their opposition. Afterwards, we check in with Lars for another episode of Håland Watch™, as the teenage sensation scored both goals in Dortmund’s win over PSG. David also talks us through Thomas Tuchel’s bizarre changes to PSG’s line up, Marco Verrati’s incessant stupidity and Neymar throwing the PSG medical staff under the bus.We also decide whether José Mourinho is finished as an elite European coach and assess Barcelona’s enforced signing of Leganes striker Martin Braithwaite!***Please take the time to rate and review us on Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your pods. Have you ever experienced a generalized anxiousness which seems to have no immediate source? What about a need to control people and events around you, or conversely the reluctance to set a course for yourself? Are you a spendthrift? Miserly? Do you continuously seek the approval of others, or actively avoid contact? Do you avoid decision making? Are you frequently too hasty? Terrified by confrontation? Always up for a good battle? What about you, this morning? Is there an anxiousness in life which hinders your joy? My starting point for this morning is that in many cases these pervasive states of the heart and mind are response mechanisms to a fear different than physical threat. Fear that burrows deep inside us, which requires a completely different solution in order that we may experience joy and flourishing in our lives. We need God's perfect provision to defeat the enemy we face and his weapon of choice, Fear of Man.

If only her hospital retirement advisor hadn't told her that retirement at the age of 45 "wasn't a thing" she would have invested 50% of her income from the time she started working in her 20s instead of the 15% and been fatFIRE by now. Tara also discusses how her multiple side-hustles has helped her turn her passion into profits, further growing the gap between her income and expenses. Once upon a time there was a farmer who had carted pears to market. Since they were very sweet and fragrant, he hoped to get a good price for them. A bonze with a torn cap and tattered robe stepped up to his cart and asked for one. The farmer repulsed him, but the bonze did not go. Then the farmer grew angry and began to call him names. The bonze said: “You have pears by the hundred in your cart. I only ask for one. Surely that does you no great injury. Why suddenly grow so angry about it?”

January 22 Christian Liberality Blessed is he that considereth the poor: the Lord will deliver him in time of trouble. (Psalm 41:1)  To think about the poor and let them lie on our hearts is a Christian man's duty; for Jesus put them with us and near us when He said, "The poor ye have always with you." Many give their money to the poor in a hurry, without thought; and many more give nothing at all. This precious promise belongs to those who "consider" the poor, look into their case, devise plans for their benefit, and considerately carry them out. We can do more by care than by cash, and most with two together. To those who consider the poor, the Lord promises His own consideration in times of distress. He will bring us out of trouble if we help others when they are in trouble. We shall receive very singular providential help if the Lord sees that we try to provide for others. We shall have a time of trouble, however generous we may be; but if we are charitable, we may put in a claim for peculiar deliverance, and the Lord will not deny His own word and bond. Miserly curmudgeons may help themselves, but considerate and generous believers the Lord will help. As you have done unto others, so will the Lord do unto you. Empty your pockets.

Anyway, on the topic of Scottish problems, Warren asks us to solve the problem of Scottish independence. We get a bit sidetracked by thinking about the nature of the question for the upcoming referendum, so we don't have any brilliant solution for Scotland, but maybe that's for the best.
