Without question the last 2-3 years have lit a fire under businesses, brands, governments and individuals with regard to how to think of and interact with diversity. In fact, the acronym of the early 2020s has to be D-E-I … Diversity, Equity and Inclusivity. While that refers to far more than just race, a good portion of the conversation around DEI circles around people of color. In the influence marketing space, that conversation has driven progress around the pay gap from white to black or brown creators, representation in influence marketing campaigns and sensitivities for businesses and brands to ensure they are not just checking a box, but changing behaviors. Without question, the conversations have led to progress. And that's a very good thing. As an aside, if you don't think progress in this category of our world is a good thing, I'd rather you didn't listen to this podcast. Still, there's much more progress to be made. I've made it a point to come back to the topic of diversity, equity and inclusivity, the conversations around race and how we can collaborate and cooperate more than not. Why? Because these conversations are what will continue to move us forward as an industry, a community and a species. Monique Russell happened upon me recently. She's a dynamic speaker, trainer and communications guru who hosts a podcast of her own that focuses on diversity and inclusion and understanding black cultures. Her perspective is that it is incumbent upon us all – regardless of color or race – to do our own diversity, equity and inclusivity work to build unity. The show is called Bridge 2 U. It is now a member of the Marketing Podcast Network and a sister show to Winfluence in that regard. As such, I asked my new podcast partner of sorts to join us on the show. Today we're going to talk to Monique Russell about communications, including the practice of influence marketing and marketing overall, through the lens of diversity. And you know me … I'm just dumb enough to ask the hard questions in hopes we land at an answer that bridges those gaps. This episode of Winfluence is presented by CIPIO.ai where you can create a consistent flow of authentic user-generated content to fuel paid, earned, shared and owned campaigns that set your content marketing on fire! One of the main methods of doing that is by shifting your influencer marketing focus to a Community Influence Marketing one. That's where you discover the influential voices in your own community of customers, fans and followers, and partner with them to create authentic content that recommends your brand. Download CIPIO.ai's new ebook called The Marketer's Guide to Community Influence Marketing. It's a step-by-step manual that shows you how to do it. The result is a more cost-efficient way to engage creators and drive word-of-mouth marketing while capturing better-performing content for your paid and owned social media efforts. In the bonus episode, of Carry On Friends we're doing an episode swap with Bridge to U featuring the episode "Healing is Not a Luxury". Bridge to U is a Breadfruit Media Produced Podcast hosted by Monique Russell. This episode features Barbadian Dr. Charmain Jackman who discusses the idea that healing is not a luxury. Dr. Jackman is an award winning psychologist who has trained at two of the top Harvard Medical School training hospitals in the US. She has over 2 decades of mental health experience and focuses on normalizing mental health and therapy for people of color. Her mission is to increase access to mental health resources for people who have historically not had access to quality, culturally-informed care. She discusses the need for us to recreate the narrative around who has access to therapy. Traditionally, there have been barriers to people of color seeking mental health help. Some of these challenges include people of color's distrust of medical professionals, as well as, the challenges in finding healthcare professionals who understand our cultural background. We also learn that therapy wasn't designed with black persons in mind. In formal psychology education today, there is a lack of focus on the perspectives of black persons. Such training largely does not consider people of color, nor the diversity and equity issues we face. Monique and Dr. Jackman explore the ideas of reclaiming our history and embracing cultural practices as part of our identity. By doing so we can feel empowered in the face of colonialism and white supremacy that has trained us to believe that there's something wrong with the way we as blacks communicate and respond to racism. Embracing our heritage also helps us to heal.Dr. Jackman highlights that healing is important for ourselves, our communities and generations to come.Connect with Dr. Charmain Jackman: LinkedIn | Facebook | Website | InstagramConnect with Monique Russell: LinkedIn | Instagram | Facebook | YoutubeConnect with @carryonfriends - Twitter | Instagram | FacebookSupport the show

She teaches women leaders and teams how to have positive and productive relationships, using effective communication tools and strategies that foster connection, community creativity and courage or confidently communicating from the inside out. Welcome, Monique. Monique: Thank you for having me, Marlana. I'm excited to be on the show. Marlana: here's the thing, we can have the best message, we can believe in what we're doing. But if we cannot communicate that clearly, we're in trouble. So, talk to us about how do we do that? Monique: Well, I think the first thing we have to think about is considering all aspects of ourselves. I think the time where people where we get frustrated, or we feel limited or boxton is when we think that we have to narrow everything down into one nice squishy little message. And then we feel like relieving so much out of who we are so much out of our brand. And then that triggers the feeling of inauthenticity, like that's not just really who I am, I'm so much more. And so, the first thing is to think about or take the mindset and the framing that you are multi passionate, you are multi skilled. But when we think about communicating our message, we want to step into the mind of the audience that we're trying to reach. And we don't want to confuse them, we want to give them something that is almost like a window. You know, think about it, when people would go door to door with their sales messages and strategies you give them just enough KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK for them to say okay, come on in. And then let's have a conversation. And then you get to see more about what the services what they offer, you may learn something that you wouldn't have known if they were just at the front door saying Well, I do this, this, this, this and so many things and you confuse them and you lose them. So, first thing is to kind of think about that mindset of a not boiling everything down because it's not who I am, I'm trying to be very clear, I'm trying to be very specific, and connect with my audience in the fastest way possible. Then once you embrace that mindset, it really opens. You have to think about if I only had two minutes, what would be the one thing they absolutely...

In her own words: I'm Monique Russell, an executive coach, leadership guru, communication expert, and the founder of Clear Communication Solutions. Well, that's what many people say about me. I come from a long line of educators in my family. I thought that one thing I was NEVER going to be was an educator. So it's funny how I've been one all along, but never really realized it. All I wanted to do was to be on TV. I started acting, public speaking, and hosting events at a very young age. I was often called on to read in church or serve as the mistress of ceremonies. I loved it. I loved every bit of it. I continued public speaking throughout my school years. I was very active in leadership roles in many school clubs and community groups. Keeping in line with my desire to be on the big stage, I earned a Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism. Then I quickly realized the moolah just wasn't enough. I went back for two Masters of Science, one in Public Relations and the other in Advertising. Well, life didn't work out the way I planned. For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to be the “star of the show”. I wanted to present, facilitate, please my parents, friends, family, and everyone else. Then, I got older. I faced one too many rejections. Life happened. And one day, I realized I had lost my confidence. I almost couldn't recognize myself. I became fearful and doubtful even in my natural abilities. Through a process of self-awareness, introspection, empowerment outlets, coaching, and a support system, I slowly gained my confidence back. And I am determined not to go down that path again. When I decided to impress and love myself first, the zone of genius began to unleash. I am an excellent communication consultant and coach, that's why I'm ready to guide you with my gift so you too can be a confident and clear communicator. The phrase “what goes around, comes around” is applicable in many situations. And leadership is one of them. In today's episode of IntHerrupt, Linda is joined by professional communicator Monique Russell to discuss how unlocking your best self is best accomplished through helping others be their own best self. What defines someone's best self? Your best self is when you can be honest with yourself, considering how you get along with others and how you experience and show compassion. It's also embracing all parts of who we are - the good and the bad. Monique found her best self after years of coaching and therapy. No matter how many accolades we have, internal development fosters deeper connections with others. You don't know what you don't know. And opening up and letting vulnerability embrace you can help with the process. Helping others see their best self: Think about parents - you can teach and talk all day long, but kids ultimately mirror the actions and behaviors rather than listen to words. Leaders who struggle to realign with their team find it challenging to advocate for someone else when both parties are overworked and burning the candle on both ends. The best way to help others is by setting the example to take care of yourself. What can you do when you slip back into unhealthy behaviors? We are not robots, meaning we'll never get to a place devoid of obstacles. When faced with a crisis, give yourself grace. Look at past times you've faltered and determine what you did to overcome those challenges. Don't look at the big mountain; just look at the next small step. We are empowered by sharing. Share to story to find additional empowerment. Three steps to be your best self: Have a vision - without vision, you're operating on a default idea. Get connected with a community (and community can mean just one or two people) who can help you be accountable to yourself. Think about your health. No matter what you do or strive towards, it's far more difficult when you aren't in a great place of health. We've all had to deliver a speech sometime in our lives; and, over time, the more we publicly speak, the better we get. But, once we step down from the stage, that confidence doesn't always stick around. How, then, do we build that confidence to deliver a brand message? We speak with Monique Russell, Training & Communication Consultant | Leadership & Relationship Development Coach at Clear Communication Solutions, LLC, about how confidence in communication is an internal struggle rather than something improved upon behind a podium. Monique Russell is of Bahamian and Nigerian heritage and now lives in the US. She is the CEO of Clear Communication Solutions, a podcaster , a coach of immigrant women and a first time author. Her mission is to bridge the gap between black cultures by having open and honest conversations. In her first year in College Monique was very active in the African Students Association (ASA) and Council of African American Students (CAS) and quickly learned that the differences in cultures were due to misinformation on all sides. She recalled being asked if she wore clothes in the Bahamas and sees this as one of the reasons why she needs to focus on diversity and inclusion among black cultures - black Americans, black Caribbean and black Africans.

History is unfolding every day. The unspoken is yelling in corporate, our homes, the streets. Today I bring on communications and leadership builder Monique Russell. Finding your way to communicate about race is just one concern we covered. https://www.linkedin.com/in/clearcommunicationcoach/ What is communication? Monique Russell 1:10 So I know it seems to be a very big and broad topic because there's many facets, facets of communication. But the easiest way for me to share this is that basically there are two main elements. It's your interpersonal and your intrapersonal. Your interpersonal that's how we get along with other people, how we get along with, you know, our colleagues, our leaders, our friends, and then intro like insight intro is how we get along with ourselves. These are our emotional intelligence pieces, our self-awareness, our thoughts, our motivation, our energy, all of those things focused on the inner person, the inner man, but the truth is, many people focus primarily on the external. How can I get this person to see my view? How can I get this person to change? How can I get this person to buy into my idea? How can I be more influential, again, externally focus, but that's the wrong approach. You have to start from the inside out. When you get the inside clear, and you're confidently communicating inside of yourself, then your interactions with other people outside have so much more impact and they're so much more productive. How the need for belonging, love, acceptance is universal Monique Russell 5:11 Absolutely. So it doesn't matter if we are in a different country or there's a different language or there are unique cultural values in terms of our protocols of how we engage with people, you know, in status and titles and positions. But what is common among people, regardless of what the country is, is that there is this need for belonging, there is this need for love. There's this need for acceptance. We don't even have to be able to speak the same language. But we are able to connect on a sort of heart to heart level this spiritual intelligence that we are moving into

Communication is Key... Monique Russell of Clear Communications coaches us on the best way to communicate in the business world! - We're missing connection, that's what we're missing. We're missing connection and all of it is not influenced just at your job, you are a whole person. So you bring all of your life experiences, you bring your successes, your wins, your divorce, your loss, your grief, you bring everything with you to work. So as the leader, it's really selfish of you to think that you can leave that outside the door and just focus on work and produce and execute. - So Monique, thank you for coming out. You're a speaker, communications coach, which is really cool. And we're gonna hit on that today and a mom. So, tell me a little bit about like, where do you come from your background? How did you get into what you're doing? - Alright, well first, it's a pleasure to be here. So thank you for having me. And, I guess a little bit about me is something that you must know I am from the beautiful islands of the Bahamas. - Awesome. - In case you didn't hear my accents. Sometimes it comes out - I heard it come out. - I can camouflage it kind of okay, but, sometimes it comes out - Don't camouflage. - [Monique] When I'm excited - Oh, you gotta let that thing roll, c'mon - [Monique] Okay just wait - There you go. - So the Bahamas and Nigeria, that's my cultural heritage. I grew up in the islands and I came over to go to school. Studied journalism. So pretty much was supposed to be traveling all over the world, covering stories and doing investigative reports, but it didn't work out like that. And I continued my schooling in public relations and advertising. And when I finished I said, I'm getting me a job, I'm gonna go ahead and travel the world, I'm gonna do all the big exposés, all that stuff. - So publicity like PR for like major corporations and stuff or what ? - Well, the truth is, so I studied journalism, and then you know, it's all about the objective truth, right? - Right. - And then you learn that that's not really the truth. And then I said, well, I'm gonna go on the other side, because the broadcast folks and the PR folks, they don't really mesh well. So I said I'm gonna go on the PR side, I'm gonna bust this thing all the way through once and for all. And I didn't, so I didn't pursue that path. It was really hard for me to get in, especially on the TV side, because, as you know, it's low pay. - Yeah. - It's grunt and really, at that time, I already had my first child, and I had a ton of student loans that I needed to get to work on paying, and I just started where I could get in. So that's kind of what I did to get started - So just straight in, lowest, just to get in a door. - I found executive support job, and that's what I did. It was temporary in my mind, and I said, that's all I'm doing. I'm coming in here and I'm just gonna start working. But turns out that that was actually my hands on training, which leads to what I do today. I didn't know it then though. It's only in retrospect that I said, wow, this is why I'm so effective in what I do. Because back then when you're an executive support, nobody considers you a threat. But you get to see and hear a lot of things, what makes people tick, what makes leaders tick, what makes them successful, what's makes them disliked. And because I already had that communications background, people would often come to me and ask me for my advice and opinion on how to get people involved, how to inspire the team, how to get engagement, and all sorts of other things like that. - All because you took the risk, you went into a lower paying job, and you literally got paid to learn - Pretty much and I never thought about it like that.

How important is credibility for your business. We’ll find out later when we take a look at Credibility, the four and final C of Marketing Communication. But first, let’s meet Monique Russell an Executive Communications Coach. Sounds very prestigious doesn’t it. Well, what Monique does is help corporate professionals improve their communication skills and to date has taught over 2,000 people globally. Monique has also helped inspire parents who were stuck on how to motivate their children, which she is tremendously proud of and rightly so. But I want to get into the type of communication skill you, the listener need right now, in business and in education, especially if you are new to a business and want to make that great first impression or just simply communicate with your colleagues more effectively. Takeaways - Here are Monique’s tips for what to do when starting a new role and it’s quite extensive: - Ask questions, pay attention to what is around you, share strengths and experiences, keep on learning and understand the work culture – is it for you? Do you fit in? Did I miss anything? - You need intention and action to be noticed. Take ownership of building social relationships. Make the effort and try talking face to face rather than remotely, it can make a huge difference - And finally, the dreaded M word. Meetings. Monique gave us a few short, handy piece of advice to keep these on-track and worthwhile: - Always have an agenda - Set a timeframe - Give the meeting a purpose and have an outcome - Provide a short recap for those ongoing meetings or for any newbys that may be joining you Top Tip - The 4C's of Marketing Communication: Credibility Have you even gone to purchase something from somewhere not credible? Seen some comms, thought it looked dodgy and bought it anyway… actually don’t answer that. Whatever you get up to in your own time is your own business, it’s not for here. But if you haven’t, there is a reason for that and that’s because communications need to be credible to stand any chance of long term success. Yes, you can fool some people, but not for very long and not with any type of long term commitment from them. But how do we do this. To gain credibility you need to become credible within the mind of the customer. This can be effected by a whole host of elements – the words you use, the font type, colours, images, sounds, smells and even the people that endorse your products or services… the influencers. With all this in mind, the one thing you need to keep front and centre when making your communications credible, are your customers – what will resonate with them, what do they find credible? Answer these questions and you’ve hit the credibility mother-load… all you have to do now is be credible in your actions before, during and after purchase. Out of all the C’s of communication, this one, credibility, for me, is the one that will provide long-term success, an affiliation with your customer, turning them into advocates and it is just damn ethical to be credible! Novelist Katherine Thurston said, “No weapons are more potent than brevity and simplicity”. Communication can be tricky, because you want to be clear about the details without taking years to explain the concept. And don’t forget about your audience. Connecting with your audience of executives is much different than connecting with new grads who want to absorb it all to help navigate their careers. Our next guest, Monique Russell, founder of Clear Communication Solutions, helps leaders all over the world build development strategies and she’s here to share some of her wisdom with us. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/readmylipstick/message

Monique Russell is the managing partner of Clear Communication Solutions LLC, a communications coaching and consulting firm focused on helping women leaders go from good to great as confident communicators. As a certified DiSC trainer and Professional Coach with graduate degrees in Communications, she helps leaders strengthen their personal and professional relationships by using practical tools to harness their emotional intelligence. Show Notes: “No one cares how much you know, until they know how much you care.” -Theodore Roosevelt. Implicit in this statement is the idea that emotional intelligence is a necessary trait for anyone with leadership aspirations. Further, it is said, Intelligence Quotient gets you hired but Emotional Quotient (EQ) gets you promoted. As someone who, over a series of events, had lost her confidence, Leadercast Host Site Leader, Monique Russell is now on a path to help others regain their self-belief through a series of experiences by practicing tools to harness emotional intelligence. In a recent episode of The Entrepreneurial You podcast, Monique shares her journey of accomplishment and how to leverage emotional intelligence to lead effectively. Moniqe shares Myles Munroe 5 questions that motivates the human heart: 1.Who am I? 2.Where am I from? 3.What can I do? 4.Who can I serve? 5.Where am I going? “When you align with your strengths and get clear on it, doors will open”, Monique went on before touching on an important quadrant that we need to be aware of in the Emotional Intelligence conversation. Identify what is happening 2. Self-regulation 3. Social awareness 4. Relationship management In my quest to delve deeply into what emotional intelligence is and how to get there, I was put in the hot seat as Monique illustrated the power of reflection. “Emotional Intelligence is being able to identify what your body is doing at the first sign of stress…Take that data and apply it to make your relationships more productive…How is your behavior affecting others around you?” “As you aim to work up the Emotional Intelligence continuum, working with a coach who is dedicated to see you get from good to great is a great way to start…Another effective tool is the power of reflection – review, repair and release. It is important to focus on what is bringing joy instead of putting fires out.” “Identify key points within projects and figure out when did I operate in a spirt of excellence, Monique suggests.” These are just a few of the pointers Monique gave. NICK WALKER: Welcome to Manage This, the podcast by project managers for project managers. Every two weeks we like to come together and talk about what matters to you, whether you're an experienced expert in the field or a newcomer to project management. This is our opportunity to take a bold and objective look at where we are in this industry and the role we play in it. I'm your host, Nick Walker, and with me are the guys who have the experience. They are the in-house experts, Andy Crowe and Bill Yates. Andy, it is always a treat to have someone in the studio who's a coach, a motivator, a mentor, someone who's out there calling on us to be our best. ANDY CROWE: It is, Nick. And this topic is overdue for us. We've needed to address this for a good while, and I think it's very timely. NICK WALKER: Well, let's meet our guest. Monique Russell is an executive consultant helping leaders and teams communicate effectively at work. As a part of Clear Communication Solutions LLC, she's consulted on marketing and communication strategies with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, other national associations, as well as corporate organizations. She is a teacher, having taught communications and public speaking at the university level. A proponent of lifestyle leadership, she hosts an annual Forbes recommended leadership conference, Leadership Alpharetta. Originally from the beautiful islands of the Bahamas, she loves the ocean, and we're told she's quite fond of sushi. Monique, thank you so much for being with us here on Manage This. MONIQUE RUSSELL: It is a pleasure, an honor to be here with you today. Thank you for having me. NICK WALKER: Well, first off, we'd like to get to know you a little bit better. Can you tell us about your experience as an executive coach? MONIQUE RUSSELL: Well, I will say let's go all the way back to the beautiful islands of the Bahamas. NICK WALKER: Okay, that sounds good to me. MONIQUE RUSSELL: I always knew that I was interested in public speaking, and I started early in performing arts, started acting, and moved through high school debating. And I just loved it so much that I knew I wanted to get on TV. That was my number one goal. So I ended up leaving the warm, sunny island and going all the way to St. Cloud, Minnesota. NICK WALKER: Oh, what a contrast. MONIQUE RUSSELL: You know about St. Cloud, Minnesota weather; right? NICK WALKER: It's cold. MONIQUE RUSSELL: Yes. So anyway, I studied journalism, and I continued on to marketing and advertising; and I got out, and I hustled, hustled, hustled, trying to get my way in the door, and I couldn't get my way in the door. So I started off in executive support. And I didn't know it then, but that was my training ground for what I'm doing today. I had no idea that what I did then was what I would be doing or connected to what I'm doing today. NICK WALKER: Well, we are so glad you're with us because I know a lot of people in project management positions tend to be very logical and analytical. They have a tendency to not get caught up in feelings and emotions on the job. But you are an expert in the field of emotional intelligence, or EI, where feelings do matter. And I'm sure there's a lot of project managers listening to this going, “Yes, I need that.” So how does EI impact the role of the project manager? MONIQUE RUSSELL: Wow. You know, EI is like – it's like your warning sign, if you will. So I want you to think about your gas light in your car. And when that gas light comes on, and that check engine light comes on, it's like that warning sign that says, hey, something's coming down the pipe. You need to take action. So you can ignore it, but sooner or later you're going to end up on the side of the road. Right? BILL YATES: Right. MONIQUE RUSSELL: So EI is like our warning sign. It's our indication that, okay, something's happening.
