I'm working with a new client who is getting ready for a huge keynote speech. He tells me that he felt like his last speech completely fell flat and the audience felt disengaged. So I ask him: “Did you use storytelling in any way in your last speech?” “No, of course not,” he responds. In his view, story wasn't appropriate for his last talk because it was very data-heavy. So I challenge him. “Since you are in the scientific community,” I say, “what if, as an experiment, you add a story to this upcoming Keynote to bring the data to life?”  I give him some background about why and how story works. And in the end, he trusts me and delivers his Keynote to a huge standing ovation. To this day, he continues using story in his scientific presentations. We might think we need to deliver data in a straightforward way. Yet our brains are wired to remember stories so much better than facts. There are studies that show people retain up to 70% of the information shared through story, as opposed to only 5-10% when it's just presented as data. This is episode 516. Tips for sales career advancement. Read the complete transcription on the Sales Game Changers Podcast website. GENEIN'S TIP: "Find the miracles in the mundane. Right now, look at what's in front of you and pick up something that you've been exposed to for a long time. Look for one new thing you've never noticed before. With that, you can look at your services. Try to find one thing you've never noticed about your service before. First you do it with an object in front of you to make it concrete and then you can take it into the abstract. One thing in my observational chapter that I never noticed before or that I can add in dealing with the mundane things that you're just so used to really seeing, that's biomimicry, how we can look at nature that we walk past. Look at it with a new eye, a fresh eye and there's your innovation."

How do you create a life that combines neuroscience with social activism?   Well, our next guest Dr. Peter Sterling has written the playbook on it. From being a Freedom Rider and getting arrested for social justice to seeing the connection between discrimination and brain stress, Dr. Sterling started to see a connection between wellbeing, brain science and overall health in marginalized communities.   He also shows how this affects our Intercultural Creativity®.   Working in communities of color, Dr. Sterling observed high rates of strokes from hypertension and began to explore its neural basis. He soon realized that it was not primarily a problem of the body or genes (as the medical textbooks still claim) but rather chronic stress mediated by the brain to the body (blood vessels, heart, and kidney). What caused this effect?   Discrimination and lack of belonging.   He began to publish articles on this topic, beginning in 1977, and what he learned about the brain-body connection ultimately developed into two books, 'Principles of Neural Design' and 'What is Health? Allostasis and the Evolution of Human Design' (2020).   Join us as we jump into the intersection of well-being, the mental and creative effects of being excluded and how art is an important component for our mental health. ‘Genein, I can't take any more voice over powerpoints! This is having no long term effect on people's behavior around these DEI topics!”   I heard this and I knew one reason why. If facilitators aren't tapping into people's emotional brain, there is no strong connection to the topic. Your perspective may skew the perspective of the students, so encourage them to share their views and ideas first and then share yours afterwards. Say “thank you” to students who share their answers, ideas, and views. There are miracles in the metaphors. Bring metaphors into your day, your lessons, and your meetings and have fun with it. Arts are key. Artistry helps grow creativity. Observation is also key. You can't be creative if you have no data to be creative with, so create activities that combine sensory information, for example, going outside and listening to the sounds of nature.   “Knowing that the cultural capital and the cultural experiences that the children are coming in with is key. That is gold because the brain doesn't learn by just throwing new information to it, the brain learns through integration, by integrating new information to already learned information. How do you view Culture? Have you taken stock of your personal biases and your outlook on issues relating to cultural diversity recently? She says creative thinking is affected by culture and culture is lived through people. Therefore, the people in a business or organization guide its culture.  She explains that culture is not one set thing as there are different cultures; i.e. Ethnic culture, National culture, and that these are affected by things such as gender and other demographics. She explains that the way people interact with data and people, has a lot to do with their cultural influences and how it can differ based on cultural upbringing.    What Is Cultural Creativity? Genein explains that Intercultural Creativity is her life's work and dispels the myths that creative thinking is only the ability to choreograph a dance or be artistic in the practical sense of the word.  She explains that creativity is the process of finding a problem and solving it with relevance, value, and novelty. She says that creativity is in all spheres of life, fields, and cultural groups. Genein explains that Intercultural Creativity has to deal with cultural competence and the ability for people to interact with people from different lived backgrounds and lived experiences and detect the similarities, differences, and complexities, adapting as they shift varying through cultural groups.    How to Create an Inclusive Environment   Genein explains that three-hour workshops every once in a while to encourage inclusive environments is not an effective method for corporations as creating an inclusive environment is a lifelong journey.  She explains that creating an inclusive environment is a matter that deals with the mindset and psychological beliefs of a person, and it takes dismantling current beliefs and rebuilding new ones.  Genein explains that in order to see changes towards inclusivity in a work environment, leadership must demonstrate openness and support of inclusivity.  Practical Ways To Build A Culture Of Cultural Diversity  Genein says reinforcement of proper core values demonstrates self-awareness which causes persons to practice introspection and assess what they value and look for in other people.  She explains that when she meets a new person despite their cultural or ethnic background, her first move is to find out about their ‘diamond.' She refers to this as the gifts, skill, talent, or contribution of a person.   She explains that looking for people's diamonds stops her brain from making negative perceptions based on things she might have heard or seen in the media.  She says another tip for building cultural diversity is alleviating our unconscious biases. She explains that our mindset can affect the way we see others so we have to make an effort to change that by becoming more self-aware of the biases that we might have.  She explains that everybody has unconscious biases but we have to make an effort to manage them. She says our brain makes these biases to protect us,

The top indicator of a highly creative person is openness to experience but the highest indicator of a culturally competent person is openness to people with different lived experiences.
