The term morphic field was first coined by British scientist Doctor Rupert Sheldrake. He has published a number of scientific papers on the subject. His work is fascinating, if somewhat dry and not always easy to read. The great thing about morphic fields though, is that you don't need to have a detailed understanding of them in order to use them. That said, the basics are easy to grasp. A field is a kind of energy that can affect matter (or ‘stuff' to use the less scientific term). We're all familiar with at least one kind of field—a magnetic field. Even though we can't see it, we know a magnetic field can affect certain stuff—metal. The dial on a compass moves because it is affected by the earth's magnetic field. And those little fridge magnets work because a magnetic field holds them tightly to the metal door of your refrigerator. A morphic field also affects stuff. It's less fussy than a magnetic field though, because the stuff it affects is elementary particles. These are the smallest particles known to science. If you took anything in the universe, chopped it in half, and kept chopping the halves in half, you would eventually end up with a single molecule. If you kept going and chopped that up too, you would have some atoms. And if you chopped those up, you would be left with elementary (subatomic) particles like electrons and quarks. These particles are what are affected by morphic fields. And because everything in the universe is built out of them, that means morphic fields affect everything. They exist everywhere. They are inside you right now. And inside me. And inside this book. They are in the air around us. They are in space. They are in other stars and other planets. Morphic fields are themselves, part of the building blocks of the universe.

Your consciousness generates a field about you that can influence the very material of your environment. [This field] particularly can influence those biological aspects of the second density and the third density. As you are generating this field, your imbalances, your biases—those aspects of self that have not yet been realized by the self, have not yet been healed by the self and brought into the light of the One Infinite Creator—present themselves within this field and offer an opportunity to the second-density entities, such as the virus or the bacteria to be drawn to and even changed by that field. Biologist and author Rupert Sheldrake is best known for his hypothesis of morphic fields and morphic resonance that leads to a vision of a living developing universe with its own inherent memory. Over the course of fifteen years of research on plant development he came to the conclusion that for understanding the development of plants, their morphogenesis, genes and gene products were not enough. Morphogenesis also depends on organizing fields. How does a massive oak grow out of an acorn? The same arguments apply to the development of animals. Since the 1920s many developmental biologists have proposed that biological organization depends on fields, variously called biological fields, developmental fields, positional fields, or morphogenetic fields.     Many organisms live as free cells, including many yeasts, bacteria and amoebas. Some form complex mineral skeletons, as in diatoms and radiolarians. Just making the right proteins at the right times cannot explain the complex skeletons of such structures without many other forces coming into play, including the organizing activity of cell membranes and microtubules.     Most developmental biologists accept the need for a holistic or integrative conception of living organization, otherwise biology will go on floundering, even drowning in oceans of data, as yet more genomes are sequenced, genes are cloned, and proteins are characterized.
