Irlandia, początek XX wieku i nieoczekiwany duet. Obaj z Belfastu, jeden katolik drugi metodysta. Nie wróżyło to w tych czasach dobrze współpracy. A jednak. Stworzyli całkiem twórczą parę. Jeden z nich to poeta i autor tekstów Seosamh Mac Cathmhaoil, lub z angielska Joseph Campbell. Urodził się w Belfaście w katolickiej rodzinie z tradycjami niepodległościowymi. Przez całe życie wspierał irlandzkich republikanów, uczestniczył w powstaniu wielkanocnym, był radnym Sinn Fein brał udział w irlandzkiej wojnie domowej. W 1925 roku wyemigrował do Stanów Zjednoczonych. Tam zajmował się działalnością akademicką, pod koniec życia wrócił do Irlandii, zmarł w 1944 roku w Lacken Daragh. W Irlandii nie zyskał nigdy takiego uznania na jakie według amerykańskich zwolenników zasłużył. Drugi to Herbert Hughes, również urodzony w Belfaście ale w rodzinie protestanckiej. O politycznych sympatiach Herberta nic nie wiemy. Przyjaźnił się z Jamesem Joycem, no i współpracował z Campbellem, więc nie mógł być przeciwnikiem sprawy irlandzkiej. Był muzykiem, ukończył Royal College of Music w Londynie. Zasłynął jako zbieracz i aranżer ludowych melodii irlandzkich. W czasie swojej kariery zebrał setki tradycyjnych melodii, wiele z nich zaaranżował. Współpracował z wielkimi irlandzkimi poetami – i właśnie z tego jest dzisiaj znany. I właśnie taką miał rolę w naszym duecie. Joseph Campbell i Hughes Herbert współpracowali w latach 1903-1904. Campbell pisał teksty, Herbert aranżował do nich stare melodie ludowe. Ich najbardziej rozpoznawalne dzieło to „My Lagan Love”. Piękny miłosny tekst Campbella Herbert zaopatrzył w romantyczną melodię zasłyszaną podczas pobytu w hrabstwie Donegal. Melodię przepiękną i wiekową. Podobno nosiła tytuł „The Belfast Maid” a może „The Maid of Belfast”. Piosenka o takim tytule krążyła na broadsidach w Londynie na początku XIX wieku. Ale ja o naszym ekumenicznym duecie opowiadam z powodu zupełnie innej piosenki, trochę mniej popularnej. Trochę. A w dodatku piosenki uważanej przez koneserów za jedną z najdoskonalszych jakie panowie stworzyli. Campbell w swojej poezji sięgał głęboko do irlandzkiej tradycji, wierzeń i mitów. I napisał swego czasu przepiękną kołysankę. Jak to w celtyckiej tradycji często bywa kołysanka jest nieco niepokojąca, romantyczna, pełna irlandzkich postaci mitologicznych, przed którymi matka chce obronić zasypiające maleństwo. Hughes melodię oczywiście zaczerpnął z tradycji, usłyszał ją, jak poprzednią w Donegal. W 1904 roku w wydawnictwie Songs of Uladh pierwszy raz opublikowali „Gartan Mother's Lullaby”. A teraz do sedna. Cofnijmy się o 33 lata. W Trójmieście od 5 lat działa grupa Krewni i Znajomi Królika. Królikiem zwą lidera grupy – Jarosława Zajączkowskiego. Zespół wykonuje tradycyjne pieśni irlandzkie i szkockie, do których Jarosław Zajączkowski pisze własne teksty. Nawilża przy tym piosenki nie mające w swojej ojczyźnie nic wspólnego z morzem. Ale jak pięknie to robi… I w 1989 grupa wydaje kasetę zatytułowaną po prostu Krewni i Znajomi Królika. I na tę kasetę nagrywa utwór Jesień, jeden z moich ulubionych. Jedna z kołysanek, które śpiewałem swoim córkom. I co się okazało? – „Jesień” Krewnych i Znajomych – to nic innego jak „Gartan Mother's Lullaby” z polskim tekstem Jarosława Zajączkowskiego. Today's guest is Eric Sarwar, a minister, musician and academic, from Pakistan and currently based in California. I first met Eric many years ago when he was visiting Northern Ireland, and I remember my kids and I dancing around the kitchen to some of the music he left behind for us to listen to. A few years later, Eric and I met again at a conference in the States, and shared music across our traditions, which shows just how universal music can be. Eric has a deep personal love for the Psalms and has studied the history of the Psalter used in Pakistan. I wanted to hear from him what the Psalms have meant for his Pakistani diasporic community, and also about his fascinating doctoral work looking at the Psalms as a starting point for interfaith dialogue with Muslim neighbors. I'm grateful to Eric for sharing his music for this episode – you'll hear him singing and playing his harmonium to demonstrate the sounds of the psalter he grew up hearing, and you'll also hear a recent recording of a musical collaboration that is really delightful. It was the job of the Shannachie to travel the land of Erin and collect stories from far-flung corners and this tale tells of his long life and his place in the history of the magical Isle of Erin.
