I am coming off a weekend at Camp FI which is like summer camp with people who are interested in doing things differently with their life and I must say, I have come to think money is the least interesting thing to talk about and perhaps because I am not motivated by money. Through my own money story and working with and alongside high-net worth individuals I have come to learn that money does not equal happiness. The sooner we can detach our worth and purpose from money I think the higher the odds for contentment and fulfillment. That is certainly not easy which is why I was so excited to have this conversation today. Before I jump into the episode today I wanted to mention that many have asked how they can follow our journey. I have decided that the best place to stay connected will be through our email list and choose the Family Gap Year Adventure topic (and any other topic you are interested in) https://ordinarysherpa.com/subscribe/ I have started a blog and will be sharing some of the stories and deeper learnings of life on the road with 3 kids and a dog and all the real life things that go along with that. I will still be posting on Instagram and will keep the podcast more broad than our gap year, however there will occasionally be episodes highlighting the gap year diaries :). She specializes in working with those in the public eye to keep them in integrity with who they want to be while also enjoying the life they are living. She is a mental health and mindset expert known for sharing real talk with heart, calling you to uncover and honor who YOU are, and empowering you to claim your joy daily via her first book (F The Shoulds. Do The Wants.), social media, Claim it! Podcast, Own Your Awesome daily inspiration App, and everything that she does. Key Takeaways Tricia was living her dream as a sound engineer next to musical icons living their dreams of making music. However, her dad died suddenly which shook her more than any anticipated loss. “I wanted to shake people up to be present in their life.” Even people who appeared to have it all, living their dream life struggled with feeling like they were enough and finding daily joy. Tricia was living her dream life - she kept getting pulled back into and loved the identity that came with it - and still had a yearning for “what's next?” Music tour life provided everything for her and offered a built in community of people you love like family in some way. There are also toxic environments. Ironically the bigger tours, bigger venues with bigger artists that she initially defined success by, were actually the most toxic environments. Taking a pause allowed her to go deep into herself. By giving up the word should and changing it to want gave her the power and ability to support others being present to their life. Being present doesn't mean you ignore the struggles of life. It means you recognize the realities of life AND still make space for joy. Even though she lived life on her terms, it was surprising how present the word SHOULD was embedded into her language and because of that, her mentality. In the exercise of eliminating should, she would catch herself and pause, noticing how often she said the word should and was stuck with the question “what can I say instead?” Just paying attention to this one word had her examingin her thoughts, feelings, and truths. Then having the ability to not take that as her truth. Should makes us think outside of ourselves, replacing it with want brought it back to me and owning that thought, feeling or belief. When people notice and work through their should list if often reveals that people might not know what they want. We have such extensive should files so asking “why do I want that?” can help go deeper. Giving yourself the ability to focus on why offers clarity on impact, and why you might want to do the thing or give flexibility and voice to how else you cn do it. In the meditation example - maybe I take 3 deep breaths instead of a focused sitting meditation as an example. We keep ourselves from doing what we want based on what we think it should look like. When things feel stuck, how can I make space for joy OR how can I nurture myself? So often we are pursuing something bigger, and our worth is tied up in that bigger thing. How can you make space to take care of yourself, to nurture yourself, do things that bring you joy and celebrate I am alive today. It seems we are trained to know what fulfillment looks like, but what does it feel like? For me it comes from the small day to day stuff. Walks outside are a strategy to redirect negative energy and practicing how to notice and be present in nature. Have you ever thought about how the word “should” is running your life? Like, I should work harder. I should be thinner. I should go workout. I should be more motivated. I should . . . fill in the blank. Tricia Huffman, aka Your Joyologist and author of F the Shoulds. Do the Wants: Get Clear On Who You Are, What You Want, and Why You Want It, believes that this one word holds us back, steals our joy, and even makes us question our self-worth! After becoming more aware of how the “shoulds” were not only part of her vocabulary, but also a part of her thoughts and beliefs, Tricia completely eliminated the word from her life. When she shifted the “shoulds” into “wants”, Tricia was able to make decisions that better reflect who she is and wants to be. Now, she's on a mission to empower you to claim your joy by living life the way you want to live, rather than conforming to some model you think you “should” be following. In this episode, you'll learn: How to become aware of the way “should” impacts your life The sneaky ways the “shoulds” show up in your food story Strategies for releasing guilt and shame A unique approach to respond to negative self talk A single question to reframe the “shoulds” How to claim joy every day After listening, you'll feel empowered to take action right away by simply paying attention to this one word! Did you know that, according to research, we make an average of 35,000 decisions every day. And 226 decisions are about food.In episode 60, Genny talked about how the decisions around food can be about what you're eating during the day, or the proverbial “What's for dinner?” question. It's also about grocery shopping, or going out for dinner. She also commented that some decisions are not actual decisions because it's already a habit so you don't have to think about it. For instance, her drink of choice at Starbucks is a tall dark roast in a grande cup with a little cream (or small dark roast with a little cream at a local coffee shop). It's what she always gets so she doesn't have to make a decision. But when you have more than one option and you can't decide between the two, you're in the “sea of indecision”. And that's when the “should” comes into play. You're trying to decide if you “should” pick one option or the other. Sometimes, you'll ask a friend or a stranger or even the person who is taking your order – what you “should” order. You're looking for validation. Be careful that you don't allow guilt or pressure or encouraging procrastination when you are “shoulding” your decision such as “I should do my taxes but I feel like watching Netflix.”.Genny recently read the book, “F the Shoulds. Do the Wants” by Tricia Huffman. In this book, Tricia shares how she struggled with the “shoulds” and even tried to eliminate that word from her vocabulary but found it a bit difficult. She suggests replacing the word “should” (and changing your mindset) to “want”. As in “I want to have this ice cream cone” or “Do I want this ice cream cone?” There's also the word “need” that speaks to some urgency as in “I need to do my taxes”.Follow Genny on Instagram at @coffeewithgennybIf you like this episode, buy Genny as coffee at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/coffeewithgennySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

We will learn: How to recognize the “shoulds” that are at the root of your doubts, fears, resentment, and shame. How to call out the BS stories you create and believe about yourself. How to stop beating yourself up over the “should haves” and what already happened. Do you keep shoulding all over yourself? The energy of words is a powerful force. And sometimes the way we speak about a problem, about ourselves, about other people is what holds the energy that either keeps us where we are or helps us move in another direction. And sometimes, even something as simple as a change of words can be the catalyst for opening up to things we didn't even realize was possible. That's what we're talking about today. Our guest is Tricia Huffman, aka Your Joyologist. She is a mental health and mindset expert known for sharing real talk with heart, calling you to uncover and honor who YOU are. I absolutely loved this conversation with Tricia Huffman on F the Shoulds. Do the Wants. Removing one word from your vocabulary can have such a big impact on your thoughts and actions. I plowed through her book, put this into practice, and have noticed how often I lean into the bad habit of "I should," instead of "What do I want" or "What can I do?" If you're a human with a beating heart, you can relate. Whether you're going through issues of second-guessing yourself, being indecisive, body issues, guilt or shame, F the Shoulds will inspire and empower you to soften, notice what you feel, and respond accordingly. Do you ever feel overwhelmed or even oppressed by all the “shoulds” in your life? You should order the salad, you should work out today, you should work late on that project, you should clean the house, you should, you should, you should. Well, according to today's guest—rock-and-roll roadie turned “joyologist” Tricia Huffman—all those “shoulds” are causing nothing but mayhem and misery in our lives. Instead, we need to do a better job of getting back to ourselves and understanding what we want, what we need, and why. It's a wonderful message and a brilliant way to own who we really are each and every day.
Tricia (also known online as Your Joyologist) is an ex rock-and-roll roadie and current life coach, podcast host, author, and speaker who I've known for at least a decade now. We chat about all the ways it's unhealthy to hold ourselves to “shoulds” instead of acting on our true wants. If you sometimes struggle with shame, guilt, and rumination over what you could have done differently in the past, Tricia has some advice for you. Whether we all live and grow up with other people’s expectations and, by extension, their judgments. But instead of letting those “shoulds” define us, shouldn’t we just be living the life that we truly want for ourselves? It is a lot easier said than done, but it is not impossible if you have the intention and the willingness to do the work. Joining Jason Wrobel and Whitney Lauritsen to unpack this for us is Your Joyologist, Tricia Huffman, a speaker, writer, coach and mentor who is out on a mission to help people live with joy in the NOW. Tricia believes that we have the power to move beyond the “shoulds” and actually strive for our “wants” and that it’s totally cool to be doing so. This conversation challenges so many of the things we have been brought up to believe all in one sitting. Prepare to have your mind blown.Love the show? In this episode Tricia Huffman, a.k.a. Your Joyologist, pushes us to ask ourselves, "What brings ME joy? What's my opinion here?" In her own words, this ex-sound engineer who had toured the world with Grammy Award winning artists, is now on a mission to inspire YOU to claim your joy and own who you are, every single day no matter what comes your way!
Tricia Huffman is the founder of Your Joyologist, a platform devoted to calling out shitty thoughts and urging people claim their joy. She’s a rock and roll roadie at heart and spent the first part of her career as a touring sound engineer for music icons like Dolly Parton, Melissa Etheridge, and Jason Mraz. Being in this environment, she saw that everyone, including the people that “have it all” still struggle with feeling fulfilled, worthy, loved, successful and enough. This along with the sudden passing of her father was the catalyst for the creation of her mindset and self-talk platform. And it’s been her mission ever since to inspire others to fully own who they are and claim their joy every single day no matter what. In this episode, she shares why she almost committed suicide at 15 years old and how choosing to live set her on a powerful trajectory to ditch the need to fit in and fully own her truth, her process for intentionally moving through her fears, stories, and uncomfortable feelings so that she can find self-understanding and take action from that place— and her top tips for doing it yourself, why taking “should” out of her vocabulary and replacing it with want changed her life in a massive way, how she got the unique opportunity to tour with Jason Mraz and became his personal wellness + joy guru, and why this kickstarted the beginnings of her business and reputation as the Joyologist, what it looked like for her to take this work and turn it into an online platform with multiple revenue streams, and so much more! Tricia Huffman's been in the business of real-deal feel-good since way before social media was a thing. And here's what I love most about her: she's all about the rogue affirmations. Most people in the feel-good biz will shower their people with "You Are Beautiful"s and "Abundance Is Yours"s and say see ya. But Tricia? She digs deeper. Tricia Huffman, aka Your Joyologist, is on a mission to inspire you to truly live YOUR life and love yourself through all the ups and downs and curve balls life throws us. While living out her first dream as touring sound engineer she saw that everyone, including the people we think “have it all” don’t feel fulfilled. So she first created her Joyology to keep artists healthy, ground and inspired in body and mind while on tour. She got off the road to make space to become a mother and create her affirmation based product line. She is now a mom of two little girls and works with everyone from Grammy Award winning artists to stay at home moms, to become and commit to the person they know they are capable of being deep down and keep them in integrity with who they want to be in the world, for themselves, and for their families. While this coversation starts with a little bit of a venting session on both our parts, I decided to keep it in because I think it's a GREAT example of productive venting, which is quite different from aimless complaining. Bitching about social media is becoming a "thing" ON social media (lol, the irony), however a lot of what I read simply talks about how annoying and tiring it all is...and places blame on everyone else for the rules we're supposed to follow. But really...who tells us we are "supposed" to follow them? Nope, no one but ourselves. Which leads me to my absolute FAVORITE part of this interview with Tricia: where we dive in and dig deep about how to distance ourselves from our need for validation, and how to take accountability and responsibility even when we feel something is entirely someone else's fault. Tricia knows how it feels to be resistant, and she knows what it means to OWN YOUR AWESOME. But she didn't get there without getting real with herself and examining what was actually getting in her way. Take a listen and let me know what you think! ***we do use a good deal of salty language in this episode*** _______________________________________________ Show Notes: Your Joyologist @yourjoyologist @beingtricia Facebook Own Your Awesome app The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Liked this epiosde and everything WANT is throwing down? Tricia Huffman wants you to live YOUR best life ever. Her mission in life is to inspire you to be your most true self and to truly live a life that you love each and every day. After healing herself from constant pain and the sudden loss of her father, she felt that life was too short to live a life of “shoulds” and to simply follow trends. She created her brand, Your Joyologist, to share inspiration daily as she has seen first hand that even those people that “have it all” still have doubts, fears, worries, and stress. Her joyology ranges from her work touring with Grammy award-winning artists and keeping them healthy, grounded and inspired in body and mind, to leading group coaching programs and creating the Own Your Awesome® affirmation deck, to being a mindful momma.
Have you ever experienced having all your dreams come true, only to find they weren't all that fulfilling? Many people have through history. So what's the answer? Join us as we explore this important topic with Tricia Huffman. As soon Tricia found out her father had passed, she had an overwhelming urge to do more with her life. She wanted everyone, everywhere, to love the life they are leading, no matter what they are doing and no matter where they are. She didn't know where life was leading her, but she pursued what made her happy and healthy. She healed and transformed herself during this time and it radiated to her community of family and friends, who were inspired that she listened to herself and took the time to pause my life to take care of herself. This eventually led her to develop her own philosophy of Joyology, something many people have found deeply inspiring throughout the years. In Feb 2015, I did a 5-day symposium consisting of 25 interviews with powerful and inspiring women sharing their stories and advice for transcending life’s struggles, fears and doing it their own way. We got so much incredible feedback on the interviews, we decided to turn it into a podcast. At times during the interviews when you hear us refer to the series or interviews that have already been done, keep in mind these interviews have been repurposed and may not follow the original order – but stay tuned because we’ll be airing four each month on Mondays alternating with fresh new episodes called “Ask Liz” every Wednesday. About Tricia Huffman: Tricia Huffman, aka Your Joyologist, is a student of life and a teacher of living. While living out her first dream as a live sound engineer touring the world with Grammy Award winning artists, she saw firsthand that even these people who are living out their biggest dreams, with everything at their fingertips can be unhappy, unhealthy and uninspired. That we all need daily inspiration to keep living a life that we love, day in and day out. Thus, Your Joyologist was born to support and inspire everyone from those same artists to stay at home moms to implement a healthier lifestyle, cultivate a greater self love and keep you in integrity with who you want to be in the world. In this episode, Tricia shares: 1. External vs internal feedback 2. How and why to stop shoulding on yourself 3. On going for big dreams and what happens when you get there
