On Episode 122 of the RETROZEST podcast, Curtis concludes the celebration of the 45th Anniversary of Steven Spielberg's CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, in the second of two episodes. This 1977 film stars Richard Dreyfuss, Melinda Dillon, Teri Garr, Bob Balaban, Cary Guffey, and François Truffaut. It tells the story of Roy Neary, an everyday blue-collar worker in Indiana, whose life changes after an encounter with a UFO. CE3K became Columbia Pictures' most successful film at that time. Assisting in this endeavor are two very special guests! First of all, DANYI DEATS (the daughter of the late DICKY DEATS, the Key Grip on CE3K) shares the experiences of her and her family on the set of the film's finale at the Devil's Tower base! Danyi, who was 9 years old at the time, was one of the child actors chosen to participate in a group of small extraterrestrials who descend from the Mothership. In fact, Danyi was the "alien" who held Richard Dreyfuss' hand as a whole group of them escorted him to the platform to enter the ship! Danyi later appeared in Madonna's music video for "Borderline", and also went on to produce several music videos herself in Hollywood; including "Nothing But Love" by Mr. Big, "Desert Rose" by Sting, "I'm Gonna Getcha Good" by Shania Twain, "Thinking Out Loud" by Ed Sheeran, and "When the Heartache is Over" by Tina Turner (to name just a small few). Connect with Danyi on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube! Additionally, DENNIS TROMBLY joins Curtis for a conversation about his new YouTube Fanfilm Miniseries, Close Encounters of the Third Kind: Amended. After high school, Dennis began studies at Oakland Community College in Robotics Engineering, fitting for the automotive driven industry. During a humanities class, Film Studies, a professor pointed out his keen eye for observation, detail, and storytelling for film and suggested considering a career in film and television. In this discussion, he shares his love for films, specifically CE3K, and what led to his producing a prequel series for the film. Dennis may be reached at cetktv.com, as well as on Facebook or Twitter. Additionally, Mr. Retrovere shares this episode's Retro News segment. Then, even in so simple a form as a list, draw the most distinctive of those elements together and show—in hints or explicitly—how you are partly contingent on those specificities, how you emerge from that milieu. Next Week's Prompt: Start with a first line from a James Tate poem and write a poem (or prose poem) that incorporates dialogue within the narrative. See where your imagination takes you! Scheffler never trailed in the final against Kevin Kisner, building a 3-up lead through six holes and giving him no chance to catch up. Scheffler closed him out with a par on the 15th for a 4-and-3 victory. Scheffler also never trailed in the semifinal win over Dustin Johnson on Sunday. In fact, he went the final 57 holes at Austin Country Club without trailing. NASCAR – Chastain has first career win, breaks ice for Trackhouse Racing It was a day of firsts for Ross Chastain and upstart race team Trackhouse Racing. Chastain bumped and banged his way around the final overtime lap at Circuit of the Americas to earn his first career Cup win. It’s also the first victory for Trackhouse Racing, which took over Chastain’s contract after buying out Chip Ganassi Racing. Tyler Reddick had somehow moved to the front in the previous single lap run between the eighth and ninth cautions. Chastain and Allmendinger restarted second and third, just ahead of Alex Bowman. The overtime featured four lead changes, with Chastain and Allmendinger swapping it twice. Chastain decided the race by divebombing inside of Allmendinger, which spun Allmendinger from second to 33rd. Bowman finished second, followed by Christopher Bell, Chase Elliott and Reddick. Soccer – CONCACAF – Pulisic 1st hat trick leads US to 5-1 win, World Cup brink Christian Pulisic scored his first international hat trick, leading the United States to the brink of returning to the World Cup with a 5-1 rout of Panama. Pulisic converted two penalty kicks during a four-goal burst in the first half that also saw Paul Arriola and Jesús Ferreira score, then boosted the lead to 5-0 on memorable goal with two brilliant touches that evaded a pair of defenders. With fans still fretting after the Americans’ failure to reach the 2018 World Cup, the U.S. assumed a commanding position to qualify for this November’s tournament in Qatar. Soccer – CONCACAF – Canada advances to World Cup for first time in 36 years Cyle Larin, Tajon Buchanan and Junior Hoilett scored and Canada secured its first World Cup berth in 36 years with a 4-0 victory over Jamaica on Sunday. Canada has been to the World Cup just once before, in 1986. Canada missed out a chance to secure a spot in Qatar last week against Costa Rica. It was Canada’s first loss in three qualifying rounds and it snapped a six-game winning streak. In this season 3 episode of Back of the Napkin, Kelly O'Neill, owner of Fusion of Iron and Earth, shares the inspiring story of her transition from the corporate world to starting a small business from little more than clay, scrap metal, sheer determination, and the passion to honor her father's legacy. Plus she talks about small business branding, Art on the Grand, Funky Ferndale Art Fair, ArtPrize and Mint Artist Guild. Read more on the podcast blog. She was raised in the 1970s, when a generation of women demanded change, and fulfilled an emerging set of expectations. Kelly O'Neill spent her formative years in Farmington Hills, Michigan, a suburban enclave outside Detroit, where her mom and Dad formulated a plan for her future: graduate college, land a corporate job, achieve success, enjoy life. And so she did. O'Neill graduated from Michigan State University – the first college graduate in her family – and rose through the ranks at General Motors. As she did, O'Neill's father, Dennis, grew his home improvement business and tinkered in his shed with a variety of artistic endeavors. His unique take on thrown pottery moved from passion to profit, with Dennis eventually showing and selling his work at local art shows. Kelly marveled at her dad's work, yet she found something missing. “I always looked up to him for his ability to master anything and everything,” said O'Neill. “He would display his pots beautifully. But from a competitive point of view, his pots looked like everyone else's.” O'Neill took a welding course at Oakland Community College so she could create holders or stands to differentiate his work. Sadly, their plans to do a show together derailed after her father's cancer diagnosis and subsequent death. “So, when he passed, he was very much a prolific potter… he had pottery in every stage, and I told my Mom that I would finish his work,” said O'Neill. With encouragement from her mom and support from the local arts community, O'Neill continued her father's work while coming of age as an artist herself. Her joy for her own work grew and O'Neill took the leap from the corporate world to the art world. Her first show, Art on the Grand, was her dad's favorite. Read More ...

The consultancy is made up of black women consultants with a wide range of expertise including advocacy, social justice, strategic planning, civic engagement, PR, branding, communications, writing and more. An important aspect of T Ramsey & Associates is that it empowers black women to run their own businesses while having the flexibility to work and raise their families. Black women move the needle when it comes to policies and voting. Community organizing has to start hyper-locally. Organize yourself and your lives first, then once you feel that empowerment you automatically start going bigger and making more movement. You need to feel empowered personally first. Organizations need to see this first. Empower women first, then bring them along to the Capitol. “Calling out rudeness is my favorite past time.” “All community organizers should be social workers.” “Organize in the way of the Black Panther.” Tameka Ramsey Tameka Ramsey is the founder and senior associate at T. How'd the show settle on Doner as its foil? There have been many, however, one specific instance drove me to stop working for other people.  Two years ago, I was in a great place: helping great people make money doing what they loved. The only thing that was missing was my family.  I was a successful business consultant in Charleston, SC, working with CrossFit Wando.  They're a family owned gym with a Christian Mission - it doesn't get much better than that. I also was responsible for a 6yr old boy.  No one else was helping to keep food on the table; the stressors of war, PTSD and the use of alcohol as a coping mechanism proved to be too much for my first marriage, and I made the choice many years ago to put the child first. Then, like the start of a movie, I woke up one morning with a terrible headache.   My vision stared to fade and I suffered through nearly 4 weeks of incredible pain while I sought help from eye doctors & urgent care centers, who all kept saying it was migraine related. The pain refused to subside and I was running out of options.  Finally, my pastor had a connection with the head of neurology at a hospital and they took me right in.  They discovered an "orbital pseudo tumor" behind my left eye.  The area was so swollen, my eye couldn't move in it's socket and my field of vision was reduced to about 6 inches, looking straight ahead.  It took a 6-day hospital stay to get the swelling down and relieve pressure off the nerves. During that time, I couldn't care for my child.  The simplest tasks proved insurmountable; I couldn't cook, use a computer, drive a car, see my phone - I couldn't even read a book.  I kept thinking about the business that I wanted to run - my blog, my online store - and how much harder it was going to be to start it if I was blind.  After I left the hospital, I moved home to Michigan where my parents live.  I rented a place in their same neighborhood and they helped care for my child while my vision returned; every available moment was spent starting my own speaking company. Now, my vision has completely returned and Mission: Ambition is going into it's second year- with exciting business ventures on the horizon.  I've remarried and we own an incredible lakefront home.  We put everything in God's hands and he continues to bless us, every day! I spent all of my 20's and most of my 30's working for other people.  I have made a lot of business owners a lot of money - and not necessarily myself. While I have no doubts that all of that experience has contributed to my success, it took me being reduced to nothing- in a high pressure situation- to completely start over.  I started by first business many years ago, and failed because I was scared to "do things right".  The financial investment of a lawyer, an accountant, insurance, etc. are necessary - if you're not ready to do those things, then don't try to start a business.  It'll just become a washed out dream that your heart was never really in. Ken Warnock served three years in the Navy prior to being discharged for being gay before “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was even enacted.  As a Navy Hospitalcorpsman, he was involved in the roll out of HIV testing of US military personnel in the mid-80’s.  After the Navy, Ken used his military training as a Surgical Technologist to gain employment upon his return home to Michigan.  As a result of his experience with discrimination, he became an advocate for gay rights and became involved in a number of local organizations.  When DADT was being discussed, Ken was a common local media presence.  In 1988, he contracted Hepatitis B from a scalpel injury during a surgical procedure.  This did not preclude him from working in the OR, however, when he was diagnosed with HIV & AIDS in 2002, a routine test demonstrated the presence of the Hepatitis B E-antigen which meant that he could no longer perform invasive surgical procedures.  He has become an Adjunct Faculty member at Macomb Community College and at Oakland Community College where he teaches Surgical Technology and Central Services Technology.  He also works full-time as a shift supervisor in the Sterile Processing Department of a local hospital.
