In this episode of Speaking Business Podcast, I'm joined by Steve Markman, founder of Markman Speaker Management, who has more than 35 years' experience in the speaker field and has helped over 1,000 leaders secure speaking opportunities globally. Steve shares what speakers often don't realise about the conference world, including how competitive it is, how far in advance events are planned, and why your abstract can matter even more than your bio. We also talk about the difference between paid and unpaid speaking, why unpaid speaking can still lead to future income, and what paid speakers can learn from executives using speaking as part of their visibility and thought leadership strategy. This is a practical conversation for speakers who want to understand what really happens behind the scenes, how to make themselves more attractive to conference organisers, and how to position their content so it matches the audience, the event and the opportunity.

The proposed privately-backed NZ20 competition will be readjusted for a 2028 launch instead, NZ Cricket confirmed. Organisers have pushed back the launch by a full year, abandoning plans to mark out their run-up in January 2027. NZ20 establishment committee chair Don Mackinnon says it's a shared decision between the organisation and NZ Cricket - and it's important to get things right. "Unfortunately, the window that we've got for January '27 is just too tight, particularly with the other commitments that we've locked in for test cricket. So it makes good sense." One of the main organisers of the Clare fuel protests claims the latest measures announced by government aren't good enough for the general public. The coalition unveiled further details of its €505m support package yesterday , which will see hauliers and coach operators receive payments of between €300 and €1,350 per vehicle in their fleets. Farmers and agri-contractors will receive roughly €200 for every 1,000 litres of Green Diesel used, while motorists will avail of the latest 10c excise cut only. Clare Fuel Protest Organiser Cathal O'Donoghue believes the lack of supports for regular people will have a severe knock on effect for the economy.

Are you forgetting to ask the question? A lot of people lead with stories, but what Squirrel really wants to know is, “What's the question?!” In this episode, Squirrel and Jeffrey discuss why the most efficient teams ask the question first and then give context. As always, real-world examples and practical tips aplenty! New Zealand students are gearing up for the world's biggest online maths competition which starts today.
Are you talking about what you're working on or what you should be working on? On this episode of Troubleshooting Agile, Squirrel and Jeffrey discuss “walking the board,” with real world examples of organisations doing it well - and not not so well, and why you need to bring the cards to the board, not the people.
