"The House That Dripped Blood" is a 1971 British anthology horror film directed by Peter Duffell and distributed by Amicus Productions. The film is a collection of four short stories, each concerning a series of inhabitants of the eponymous building.   Denholm Elliott appears in the segment "Method for Murder," playing Charles Hillyer. He is joined by Joanna Dunham, who portrays Alice Hillyer, Charles' wife.   Peter Cushing stars in the segment "Waxworks," portraying Philip Grayson. Joss Ackland (known for "Lethal Weapon 2," "Watership Down," and "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey," among over 100 other films) plays Neville Rogers, Grayson's friend. Wolfe Morris appears as the Waxworks Proprietor.   Christopher Lee appears in the segment "Sweets to the Sweet," playing John Reid. He is joined by Nyree Dawn Porter (star of "The Forsyte Saga," who turned down the lead female role in "The Avengers") as Ann Norton, the tutor hired to care for Reid's daughter.   Jon Pertwee features in the segment "The Cloak," portraying Paul Henderson. Ingrid Pitt plays Carla Lind, Henderson's co-star and love interest in the vampire film they're working on.   All of the stories were written by Robert Bloch, best known as the writer of "Psycho." Bloch wrote hundreds of short stories and over 30 novels and was a protégé of H. P. Lovecraft.      Amicus films are sometimes mistaken for the output of Hammer Films due to their similar visual style and use of some of the same actors. However, unlike the period gothic Hammer films, Amicus productions were usually set in the present day.    In the Second World War, Denholm Elliott (famous to this podcast for his titular role as the Signalman in the BBC "Ghost Story for Christmas," podcast episode 21) joined the Royal Air Force, training as a wireless operator/air gunner in 1942. His aircraft was hit by flak and subsequently ditched in the North Sea. Elliott and four of his crewmen survived, and he spent the rest of the war in Stalag Luft VIIIb, a prisoner-of-war camp.         Later, Pertwee was attached to the top-secret Naval Intelligence Division, working alongside future James Bond author (and of course Big Chris Lee's cousin) Ian Fleming and reporting directly to Prime Minister Winston Churchill. In 1967, he was chosen by "Dad's Army" producer David Croft for the role of Captain Mainwaring, but Pertwee turned it down. In 1969, Pertwee asked his agent to apply for the role of Doctor Who and was surprised to find he was already on the shortlist. He was the second choice for the role; Ron Moody was the first but was unavailable.    Jon Pertwee later claimed that "The House That Dripped Blood" was meant to be a comedy-horror film and was initially filmed in that way. However, during the production, "the producer came in, took one look at what we are doing, and went raving mad," insisting it be a horror film and not a comedy. This change meant a shift in tone, but the material already filmed remained, resulting in the film dipping in quality and edits to remove comedy elements from Pertwee's sequences. He also admitted that he intentionally based his character on his co-star and friend Christopher Lee. In a scene where Jon's character talks about favourite roles, he says that he prefers Bela Lugosi's Dracula rather than "the chap who plays him nowadays." In 1973 Richard Lester's rollicking romp The Three Musketeers was released - subtitled 'The Queen's Diamonds' (The Four Musketeers was filmed at the same time and followed a year after) the movie starred Michael York as D'Artagnan, Oliver Reed as Athos, Frank Finlay as Porthos and Richard Chamberlain as Aramis. Perhaps most memorable was the pairing of Raquel Welch with Spike Milligan, as Monsieur and Madame Bonacieux - she the close confidante to the Queen of France and he an easily-bought informant to the villainous Cardinal Richelieu (Charlton Heston). The movie also featured Lester regular Roy Kinnear, the (recently) late Joss Ackland, Faye Dunaway and Christopher Lee. It's a joyous adaptation of the Dumas novel with a script that pops and fizzes courtesy of Flashman author George MacDonald Fraser. Featuring the stylistic flourishes that always mark out a good Richard Lester film, plus realistic depictions of early 17th Century Paris - the squalor as well as the wealth - edge-of-your-seat sword fights and shot through with bawdy humour, The Three Musketeers was a commercial and critical triumph upon release and it is the topic of this week's edition of Goon Pod. Joining Tyler once again are the hosts of Still Any Good podcast - Christopher Webb and Robert Johnson, live from a shed somewhere in the Antipodes during a noisy Guy Fawkes celebration - appropriate for discussing a film which culminates in a grand fireworks display! SERIES 2 EPISODE 78: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The democracy will certainly not survive Donald Trump but I am now wondering if it has any chance of surviving Sarah Wallace, Patricia Millett, Cornelia Pillard, and Brad Garcia and if you don't know who they are, they are the latest people on the latest list of supposed liberals and supposed officers of the court who could get us all KILLED. Millett seems to be the most clueless of the three DC Appeals Court dilettantes who first STAYED the gag order issued against Trump in the Election Subversion case and then yesterday conducted the in-person hearing and all but announced that they WILL significantly limit the order because apparently when Trump starts ignoring laws he doesn't like and jailing judges he doesn't like, these idiots somehow think they will be immune because they were so fair to him back there in November 2023. Judge Millett seemed to base her nitwitted reaction to the two hours of oral arguments on the impact of the gag order on…presidential debates. “He has to speak ‘Miss Manners' while everyone else is throwing targets at him? It would be really hard in a debate, when everyone else is going at you full bore. Your attorneys would have to have scripted little things you can say.” Miss Manners. Trump has to speak ‘Miss Manners.' Do you get the same feeling I do that Judge Millette has no earthly clue WHO Dementia J. Trump is? Do you get the OTHER same feeling that I do that it has not occurred to, and will NEVER occur to, Judge Millette that so far there have been THREE presidential debates in the Republican primary and Trump hasn't shown up to any of them and there is no reason to expect he'd have the guts to show up to one in the general election. And THEN there is Judge Sarah Wallace and I'm not sure she didn't even harm the country MORE than Judge “Miss Manners” and Judge “I Would Assume” did. Judge Wallace heard the 14th Amendment disqualification case and at the same time that she ruled quote “that Trump incited an insurrection on January 6, 2021, and therefore ‘engaged' in insurrection within the meaning of Section 3 of the 14th Amendment” she then superseded the Amendment itself in as remarkable an act of judicial cowardice as I've ever seen. “After considering the arguments on both sides,” wrote Judge Wallace, “the Court is persuaded that ‘officers of the United States' did not include the PRESIDENT of the United States. It appears to the Court that for whatever reason the drafters of Section 3 did not intend to include a person who had only taken the Presidential Oath,” unquote. So she ordered him onto the Colorado primary ballot instead of saying “Yeah, I'm thinking they meant to include PRESIDENTS because otherwise having just survived the Civil War they decided to make sure Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee and Nathan Bedford Forrest could NOT run for anything EXCEPT President of the United States rather than showing some guts, Judge Wallace folded. The people who could DO something and they actually divide into two categories and two categories ONLY: Judges who are too effete to do anything and judges who are too scared to do anything. linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This September is Masterclass month at Catching Up On Cinema! September is the anniversary month of Catching Up On Cinema, and this year we're celebrating the completion of 5 years of weekly podcasting. For this year's Masterclass, Trevor and Kyle will be reviewing all 4 films in Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon series of films. This week, Kyle and Trevor review the bombastic first sequel in the series, Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)! Arriving in theaters in July of 1989, one of the more memorable and profitable summers in Hollywood history, Richard Donner's Lethal Weapon 2 (1989) is often regarded as the finest entry in the series. Upping the ante in terms of the scale of its action and quickness of its pace, Lethal Weapon 2 is a fantastic sequel that does all that a studio could hope an action sequel could accomplish. Though Shane Black does not return as screenwriter, Lethal Weapon 2 looks every bit of its $30 million budget, but more importantly, it honors the legacy of the characters presented in the first film, carrying their characterizations forward in meaningful and interesting ways. While virtually all of the familiar faces introduced in the first film return here in Lethal Weapon 2, the film features Joe Pesci, making his franchise debut as comic relief character, Leo Getz. Additionally, Lethal Weapon 2 features Joss Ackland and Derrick O'Connor in delightfully slimy villainous roles, and well Patsy Kensit as a pivotal new love interest for Mel Gibson's character of Martin Riggs. Exceeding the first films intensity and scope of action, and tuning up the volume and tempo of its comic antics, Lethal Weapon 2 is a fantastic sequel that is, at the very least, equal to its predecessor; though by all rights it very well may be the very best in a truly outstanding series. Four years later, he created Shadowlands, the gripping film drama on the love and loss of C.S. Lewis, which earned two BAFTA awards, an International Emmy, and the coveted ‘Prague D'or' for Best Director. This film went on to be an award-winning stage play, as well as a Hollywood movie.Other dramas followed included Martin Luther – Heretic, starring Jonathan Pryce; New World with James Fox; The Vision starring Dirk Bogarde, Lee Remick and Helena Bonham-Carter, and the award-winning Burston Rebellion with Eileen Atkins and Bernard Hill. Stone was also asked to direct the internationally acclaimed CBS co-production Pied Piper, starring Peter O'Toole. He then directed two of the famous BBC Miss Marples films, starring the iconic Joan Hickson in the title role, and also, The Black Velvet Gown, which earned him his second International Emmy. Always interested in experimenting with new forms of filmic storytelling, Stone went on to create and direct The Dream of a Ridiculous Man, which starred Jeremy Irons and was nominated for a prestigious ACE Award in the category of Best International Drama. This experience led directly to Tales from the Mad House, an award-winning series of one-man dramas, featuring such stars as Jonathan Pryce, Dame Eileen Atkins, Joss Ackland, Claire Bloom, James Cosmo and Helen Baxendale, before making the gritty, Glasgow feature film, Man Dancin' which collected more international awards.A string of new dramas followed, including C.S. Lewis - Beyond Narnia, Florence Nightingale, The Narnia Code and KJB - The Book that Changed the World (winner of The Templeton, Movie Guide, Epiphany Prize). In 2020, Norman completed a major Feature Documentary narrated by Ewan McGregor, The Final Fix, exploring a remarkably effective new treatment for drug addiction, and in 2021, during lockdown, he wrote and directed a new, creative drama on C.S. Lewis called The Most Reluctant Convert. This film was cinema-premiered in over 500 American cities in November 2021 and has already been seen in over 120 countries around the world.Norman is currently preparing a dramatically challenging feature film, Raising Hell, the true story of the battle to beat child prostitution in Victorian England, and is also developing an exciting, new TV action series, ROK, set in Gibraltar and the Mediterranean.Website: https://cslewismovie.com/Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBd8bYTMoTKlUAk4IVyb16QFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/CSLewisMovieInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/fpa_theatre/IMDB: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBd8bYTMoTKlUAk4IVyb16Q

Everyone loves pop music, yeah? Just agree. Everyone likes movies, yeah? Of course, you do. So, what could be better than a magical twist of the two? Literally nothing at all. Cocaine donut sex? Get out of town. We'll take pop stars acting ANY DAY. After the fun we had laughing along with The Mighty Quo's antics in “Bula Quo”, this time we've enjoyed the cinematic sortie of that other pair of denim clad, down and dirty rockers, The Pet Shop Boys. Yes, The Pet Shop Boys made a film. Record companies still had money in the eighties, so when Neil and Chris couldn't be arsed touring, they made a feature film instead. What do the teenage pop kids want from The Pet Shop Boys film? We're not sure, but we're pretty certain it isn't dogfights over Beachy Head, Musical Hall comedy, the theory of the structure of time, leering men in postcard kiosks, a bloody big suitcase, Joss Ackland as a blind priest serial killer in high heels, or Chris Lowe throwing a plate of sausage and egg over Babs Windsor's head (she didn't make another film for thirteen years, you know...). Join Joe and John Stalemates on another cough-a-minute excavation of the pop mine, where we'll be hacking up great lumps of laughter. Joe was not keen on the film. John was perhaps slightly more so, but only because one of us had to be, in the interest of BBC style balance. What HAVE you done to deserve this?

Eventually, they grab one of their vehicles and find a million dollars worth of gold coins or Krugerrands in the trunk. Later Murtaugh is threatened by the men they're pursuing. That's when the Captain reassigns them to protect a man named Leo Getz who is supposed to testify in a big case. When they get to where Leo is, someone tries to kill him and that's when they learn he laundered half a billion dollars worth of drug money. He then takes them to a place he once went to and that's when the people there start shooting at them. Later when they come back with back up they learn that the men work for the South African consulate and have diplomatic immunity. They deduce that they are the ones they were looking for, but because they have diplomatic immunity they can't do anything. thevhsstrikesback@gmail.com --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thevhsstrikesback/support

"This is the epic movie Markus made in 1994 that played in theaters all over the world. It’s a romantic storybook fantasy with flying ships, castles above the clouds and a love story that transcends time. A film for the whole family starring Christine Taylor, Sarah Douglas, Tom Schultz and Joss Ackland. Newly remastered 92 min DVD.Made in 1994 for the price of a TV commercial, this movie shows what’s possible when someone puts their heart into something. Markus Rothkranz not only created, wrote and directed this movie, but also hand built over 300 miniature models, designed the costumes, sets and even worked the camera on many of the shots. The undertaking of this film is epic. It had an army of knights on horseback riding through Death Valley, epic battle scenes with major pyrotechnics and stunts, lots of exotic animals, and a soundtrack made by a philharmonic orchestra and a 100 man choir. This is before digital effects and computers. Truly a work of the heart, “To the Ends of Time” speaks deeply to us about how short our lives really are." - Markus Rothkranz

For our 21st episode, we watch and review the 1988 surrealist musical It Couldn't Happen Here, with music by and starring the Pet Shop Boys. Directed by Jack Bond, the film is based on music from the band's first two albums Please and Actually, and instead of focusing on a coherent narrative structure it instead opts for a collection of surreal scenes and bizzare dialogue that doesn't make much sense. Today's guest is Paul Dudbridge, author of Making Your First Blockbuster: Write It. Film It. Blow it Up! Paul Dudbridge is a British director, producer, cinematographer, and educator, making feature films, television, commercials, and music videos. Paul started producing at the age of 11 when he roped in his father to shoot his first short film. When the resulting footage didn’t match up to what he had seen in his head, Paul decided to go behind the camera himself, and from there the whole notion of making films; directing, scripts, shots and angles started to come about. With over 20 years of experience in the business, Paul has numerous film and television credits to his name. His first broadcast credits include producing and directing ITV’s The Christmas Storybook, featuring legendary actor Joss Ackland, as well as directing music promos for MTV. His work as a cinematographer includes the action thriller By Any Name based on the best-selling book by Katherine John. As a producer and director, he helmed the science-fiction series Horizon, which went on to win a number of awards at international film festivals, as well as earning Paul a Best Drama Director nomination at the Royal Television Society (WoE) awards in 2016. When not filming, Paul guest lectures at various universities and colleges around the country. Most recently, he ran the Writing and Directing module for the Master's course at the University of Bristo, taught Cinematography at Falmouth Film School, and Advanced Cinematography workshops for BECTU, the UK’s media and entertainment trade union. Enjoy my conversation with Paul Dudbridge.
