He's in his final role with the theater after 25 years, performing in Ken Ludwig's Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery, a wacky twist on the classic tale. And we discuss the challenges of meeting new people in a large, busy metro area like ours.

Advocating for low- and moderate-income Rhode Islanders can be an uphill battle during the best of times. Now, with the Trump administration cutting various federal programs, the challenge is steeper. When it comes to promoting economic fairness, progressives have argued for years that the richest Rhode Islanders should pay a little more in taxes. They say their latest proposal would deliver much-needed revenue as Rhode Island once again confronts annual budget deficits far into the future. Executive director of the Economic Progress Institute Weayonnoh Nelson-Davies is among those supporting this approach. But the state budget has grown dramatically over the last 10 years, so should the focus be on finding savings and efficiency before considering new taxes? How will Rhode Island respond if Trump administration policies pose a wallop for low- and moderate-income people? And with legislative leaders unwilling to consider new taxes on the rich, what would it take to convince them to support a change? This week on Political Roundtable, I'm going in-depth with head of the Economic Progress Institute Weayonnoh Nelson-Davies.

In this conversation, we chat with Kurtis Lin, the co-founder & CEO of Pinwheel, a leading payroll connectivity API. The son of two immigrant parents, Kurt saw how the lack of credit history created a greater struggle for them to access and secure financial products. This experience became a driving force for him and his co-founders to create Pinwheel. Kurt has been involved in multiple startup acquisitions, first Idean and later with Luxe. Following Luxe's acquisition by Volvo, he received an HSA and experienced similar challenges to those of his parents. He realized if you didn't have money to pre-fund an account - which most Americans don't - opening an HSA was basically impossible. Kurt and his co-founders set out to create a more automated HSA process and soon realized the key problem was actually inaccessibility to the data and controls in payroll systems. Thus Pinwheel was born with the mission to build a fairer financial system. More specifically, we touch on the journey to building a fintech API infrastructure play, integrating inset payroll systems via APIs, the demise of payday lenders, and so so much more!

Profs. Zywicki and Miller have co-authored a soon-to-be published study, “The Effects on Consumers from Two State-Level Regulations of the Payday Loan Market,” in which they analyzed 15.6 million storefront payday loans made to 1.8 million unique borrowers in 2013 to determine whether the number of loans a consumer takes in a year is a meaningful assessment of consumer welfare. They explain how the results of their analysis demonstrates that the CFPB's prohibition on more than six loans a year in its payday loan rule was arbitrary and did not represent a reasonable consumer protection policy. They also discuss their expectations for how the CFPB under Director Chopra is likely to approach payday and other small dollar loans and respond to criticism of their study by consumer advocates. Alan Kaplinsky, Ballard Spahr Senior Counsel, hosts the conversation.

Salguero is the pastor at The Gathering Place, a Latino-led multi-ethnic Assemblies of God congregation in Orlando and also the president and founder of the National Latino Evangelical Coalition (NALEC).“Payday lending is a form of economic predation and grinds the faces of the poor into the ground. This week, Robert Broeksmit, the president and CEO of the Mortgage Bankers Association, joins the Housing News Podcast to discuss the association's regulatory priorities for 2021 and what goals it hopes to achieve under a Biden administration.During the interview, Broeksmit also discusses what could happen if the Biden administration replaces Kathy Kraninger, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.According to Broeksmit, if a new director is appointed, outside of mortgage regulation, they're likely to focus on policies related to fair lending and affordable housing.“I'd first like to say the MBA is very grateful for the tenure of Director Kraninger,” Broeksmit said. “We've worked very closely with her and think she's done a really good job at the bureau.”“If she is replaced, we think there are a lot of areas outside of mortgage lending that the CFPB will focus on because it has a very wide scope, it's not just mortgages,” Broeksmit said. “There were things the current administration decided not to focus on that I think a Biden appointee would have more interest in pursuing like student loan servicing, regulating debt collectors and payday lending regulations.”Broeksmit also addresses the Biden administration's housing agenda and what it means for affordable housing.“President Biden wants to introduce a $15,000 first-time homebuyer tax credit, but unless lightning strikes twice in Georgia and Republicans lose both runoffs, I think we'll have a divided government where a proposal like that won't get much traction,” Broeksmit said. “While the MBA is generally supportive of something like that, we don't think the chances are very high.”The Housing News Podcast is a weekly wrap of the top news stories by HousingWire Editor in Chief Sarah Wheeler. Each week, HousingWire interviews financial services experts who can help make sense of the latest headlines, sponsored by our partners at Freddie Mac.

One of the final acts of former Bureau of Consumer Financial Protection (CFPB) Director Richard Cordray before he left to run for Governor of Ohio in 2017 was the issuance of a comprehensive rule governing payday loans, auto title loans, and other small dollar loans. The centerpiece of the rule would have imposed a new "Ability to Repay" (ATR) underwriting standard on providers of these small dollar products for extensions of credit to repeat borrowers. The Rule was scheduled to go into effect in August 2019. In January of this year, however, new CFPB Director Kathy Kraninger announced a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking that would rescind the ATR requirement. A desperately needed but unanticipated car repair is enough to start a family on a collision course with financial ruin. PayDay loans are so expensive that customers often end up simply revolving the balance for months, paying weekly or bi-weekly fees to renew the loan and over the course of a year end up paying multiples of the original loan principal--sometimes without ever paying off the loan. Ennie Lim at HoneyBee developed an alternative. Let people borrow against their accrued paid time off--PTO. This virtually eliminates the risk for the lender and allows the loan to be made for a single 5 percent origination fee. Travis Holoway and Rodney Williams hit upon a brilliant strategy to disrupt the payday lending business with a tool that would be much more borrower-friendly. That tool is the SoLo Funds app, available from both the App Store and Google Play. The app lets borrowers set the terms. Remarkably, lenders are generous. That may have something to do with the fact that in the company’s short operating history they’ve seen the same people become both borrowers and lenders. The community they are building can completely change the short-term lending business. One key to their success is a new credit scoring model the company developed to measure a borrower’s ability to repay a short-term loan according to the terms they propose. Could falling oil prices actually be a good thing for certain industries in Houston? If Houston is doing well why is there such a large unbanked or under banked population compared to the rest of the country? We explored both of these questions on a new monthly segment with Houston Business Journal's Legal and Money Reporter, Suzanne Edwards.   Edwards most recently comes from Shanghai, China, where she was an editor at SinoMedia and, before that, a contributor to China Economic Review. Edwards is an Austin native and interned at the Austin Business Journal, an affiliated publication. She began her journalism career as an intern at the Associate Press' Rome bureau. Edwards graduated from The University of Texas at Austin and majored in journalism, as well as Asian cultures and languages. In addition to English, she speaks Mandarin, as well as Italian and Spanish. Edwards will focus her coverage for HBJ on following Houston's thriving financial industry, including banks, credit unions, wealth management, philanthropy, venture capital, private equity and more. She also will cover the highly competitive law sector in Houston, where expansions and M&A continue at a rapid pace.   You can follow Suzanne on twitter  at @HBJSuzanne or visit her online at: http://www.bizjournals.com/houston/bio/24321/Suzanne+Edwards   We were also joined today by president of SimpleFi, Adam Potter. We discussed alternatives to payday loans such as credit blind programs that lend to indivduals without actually checking credit.   We discussed Financial Literacy in the workplace and how financial health can be related to physical health.   Adam, 35, served as a Marine Corps officer for 10 years, rehabilitating war and disaster ravaged populations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and South Asia. He also supported the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society financial wellness programs - which have successfully counseled troops into better financial behavior and away from predatory lenders. He believes the work done by the military relief societies to recover troops who were overwhelmed by their expenses and debt should be continued in the private sector.
