United States historic place
POPULARITY
Point State Park stands as the crowned jewel of downtown Pittsburgh. It is a lush, 36-acre greenspace nestled at the historic confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers, where the mighty Ohio River is born.Point State Park is a focal point for community gatherings, festivals and celebrations. It provides sweeping views of the city's skyline and serves as a tranquil urban escape. The Point has become the place you bring your out of town parents to. The place you see on TV during all home games for the Pirates and Steelers. The place you see from atop of the iconic Duquesne Incline. But it hasn't always been that way. Before it was Point State Park, it was known as the Forks of the Ohio River and served as a critical military strong hold for the French, British, Native American and American militaries. Fort Prince George, Fort Duquesene and Fort Pitt were all – at one time or another – located where the state park stands.Overtime the Point developed into a thriving industrial zone, a place dedicated to supplying resources for the growing United States of America. But by the 1930s, the area had deteriorated into a commercial slum. City and state officials stepped up and completely changed the property. More than just a park, the Point is a testament to Pittsburgh's ability to reinvent itself while honoring its roots and is a powerful symbol of Pittsburgh's resilience, history and natural beauty. As the gateway to the city and the heart of its downtown, Point State Park doesn't just represent Pittsburgh—it is Pittsburgh. On this episode, I speak with Jack Lachendro. If you've read the news lately, it feels like Downtown Pittsburgh keeps winning the lottery. There's a $600 million plan to revitalize and transform the Golden Triangle, with tons of money going toward places like Point State Park and Market Square. But the investment isn't so obvious along Smithfield Street — once the destination Downtown, now filled with vacant storefronts. Local journalists Adam Smeltz and Stephanie Strasburg tell us about efforts to make Smithfield Pittsburgh's “it” spot again, and whether a revitalized Smithfield could truly cater to and serve all kinds of Pittsburghers. You can find their reporting on Smithfield Street in PublicSource and Pittsburgh Magazine. Become a member of City Cast Pittsburgh at membership.citycast.fm. Want more Pittsburgh news? It's the Friday news roundup! We're looking at both national political conventions to see how Pennsylvanians talked about local issues and celebrating the golden anniversary of an iconic Pittsburgh landmark. Plus, Covid cases are on the rise, and Giant Eagle is dropping GetGo — but another bird is swooping in. We always cite our sources: Giant Eagle is dropping GetGo but the new owners, Couche-Tard, will keep the myPerks loyalty program. Covid cases are on the rise in Pgh and elsewhere, and the new vaccine isn't ready yet. The CDC tracks Covid levels in wastewater, and so does the state, which has a county by county dashboard. Only about a quarter of Allegheny County residents got the last Covid vaccine. The stakes are especially high for Allegheny County because respiratory illnesses don't play well with poor air quality. A bunch of PA and Pgh folks spoke at their respective party conventions, including organizer Erin Koper and Senate candidate Dave McCormick at the RNC and Lt. Gov. Austin Davis and Gov. Josh Shapiro at the DNC. At the RNC, Koper talked about Pittsburgh police staffing levels, which are rising, and homicides, which have fallen since the year she cited on stage. Homicides rose in 2022 all over the nation. The Democratic roll call doubled as a dance party, featuring both “Motownphilly” and “Black and Yellow” for Pennsylvania. Aliquippa Mayor Dwan Walker, who welcomed VP candidate Tim Walz to talk to the Quips football team last week, gave the first remarks. Point State Park and our enormous fountain are celebrating their combined 50th birthdays. We talk about some of their most fun facts in this week's news quiz. City Paper has a great deep dive into its history, too. Nurses at West Penn Hospital authorized a labor strike this week, and striking workers at the Post-Gazette are nearing two years off the job. The PSO is on its European tour. They'll be back in Pittsburgh to open their new season in September. Besides baton diplomacy, there's a lot of other ways we foster connections with other countries. It's the Friday news roundup! Change is in store for some big summer events: Pride is moving back to the North Side, and the city isn't sponsoring the annual Juneteenth celebration at Point State Park. Plus, Pittsburgh is expanding the controversial ShotSpotter technology into a new neighborhood, and a local company is sending self-driving tractor trailers onto a Texas highway. We always cite our sources: Pittsburgh Pride organizers told KDKA-TV that they're moving back to the North Side after they were denied access to Point State Park, but the state claims they didn't submit a completed application. The news outlet QBurgh, which is part of the Pride planning group, says it has filed complaints with the state's LGBTQ Commission over “institutional barriers.” Juneteenth is still taking place at Point State Park, but the city is not sponsoring it this year, and the Black Musical Festival has been canceled. The Pittsburgh-based company Aurora Innovation will be putting self-driving tractor trailers on the road later this year – but for now, only on I-45 in Texas. Pittsburgh City Council approved a contract expansion with the company behind ShotSpotter; the technology will now be installed in Carrick. Don't miss our episode about ShotSpotter, and PublicSource's primer on Pittsburgh's history with the controversial technology Check out the lineup for Allegheny County's free summer concert series at South Park and Hartwood Acres We talked about the Steelers' report card on a previous show; players had gripes about a lot of things, including their training facility. Now the space has received a major upgrade. Sign up to meet the team and celebrate women's role in journalism at the Heinz History Center this Sunday, May 5. Come learn about one of the state's most iconic parks which intersects the 3 rivers of Pittsburgh. It has a long and storied history which has evolved into the wonderful community point that it is today. Also today, we discuss Punxsutawney Phil and some of the other wild animal predictors around.
For a city full of universities and colleges, what's one more? And what makes a DO different from an MD? We've got the scoop on the latest from Duquesne University, plus we're wondering why one of our beloved inclines can't stay open and what to look out for when Pittsburgh Pride hits a new park later this year. We always cite our sources: Duquesne University opened up their new College of Medicine for students to earn DO degrees. Here's what being a doctor of osteopathic medicine means. The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania figures that by 2030, the state will be short more by than 1,000 primary care docs. The Association of American Medical Colleges estimates a potential shortage of primary care physicians between 17,800 and 48,000 by 2034. A study published in December asked about 500 third- and fourth-year med students across 125 schools about the considerations they'd take when thinking about residencies, and 58% said they'd be unlikely to apply for a residency program in a state with abortion restrictions. The NYT explained how abortion restrictions have changed the landscape for people who previously wanted to study reproductive care. Comedian Hannah Gadsby talks about being introduced to “her people” via Mardi Gras in her special “Nanette.” This year's Pittsburgh Pride celebration will be held at Point State Park. Keep your eyes peeled on QBurgh for more Pride events as more gets announced. The Mon Incline is still closed, but you can check out what other funiculars look like around the world, like this one in Verona, Italy. Brainy Thing: 19:25 Behind the Redwood Curtain. 27:60 What We're Learning from Our Knitting Margaret reports on her learning from Little Things including creating a coaster from her Windmill Dishcloth pattern by Patricia Jared. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/windmill-dishcloth-2 She also finished an amigurumi corn on the cob from Susan B. Anderson's Summer Veggie Charm Set https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/summer-veggie-charm-set. and a Spring Tulip by Jen Lucas. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/spring-tulip-4. which was a free pattern and a class from Craftsy's Live Stream (Still available on the website.). She learns a lot from these free classes even if she can execute the pattern because the instructor shares tips as she demonstrates. The Knitting Circle also has free classes with patterns. Most recently Craftsy sponsored the Craft-o-ween series that included cooking, woodwork and quilting. Catherine is nearing the finish of her Agata Sweater by Leah Chapman https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/agata using Lion Brand Mandala. Brainy thing: Wool and Sleep Studies report that wool bedding improves sleep and REM sleep in particular, thereby increasing all the good benefits of sleep like protein production, improved mental health and memory. Behind the Redwood Curtain Patrick's Point State Park in Humboldt County has been renamed Sue-Meg State Park, the original Yurok place name. Patrick Beegan was a notorious and ruthless white settler who claimed the area where the Park now stands. Welcome to Episode 129 of Teaching Your Brain to Knit where we share research studies that show that wool can help improve your sleep. Margaret talks about learning from the Little Things she's knitted like a tulip, a corn on the cob, and a coaster and the free online knitting classes where she gets tip. Catherine nears completion of her sweater and talks about the breaking news that a State Park in Humboldt has changed its name to the original Yurok name.

Part 1: The California State Parks is currently seeking public feedback on a proposal to change the name of Patrick's Point State Park in Humboldt County to Sue-meg State Park, the original place name for the area by the Yurok peoples since time immemorial. Patrick's Point State Park was acquired by the California State Parks in 1930 with the place name of Patrick's Point already in use, dating back to the mid-1800s in reference to a homesteader, Patrick Beegan, a notorious and complicit person in the genocide of the Indigenous peoples of, now, northern California. Patrick's Point State Park is located within the ancestral lands of the Yurok people on the northern coast of California in Humboldt County, 26 miles north of Eureka and 46 miles south of Crescent City The California State Park and Recreation Commission has jurisdiction over the naming of units of the State Parks System. California State Parks is recommending that the Commission approve the changing of Patrick's Point State Park name to Sue-meg State Park at the Thursday, Sept. 30, 2021, meeting. Public feedback on this potential name change will be accepted by COB Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021. Written comments may be emailed to planning@parks.ca.gov with the words “Patrick's Point Name Change” in the subject line. Guest: • Chris Peters (Puhlik-lah/Karuk Nations), president of the Seventh Generation Fund for Indigenous Peoples, joins us for the first segment to discuss the history of land, its violent colonial legacy, and the significance of calling to action the reclaiming and renaming of Patrick's Point State Park Sue-meg State Park. Part 2: Anahuacalmecac International University is the only Indigenous school in Los Angeles County that has been providing Indigenous education for over twenty years. Despite a violent legacy of Native Americans public school educational experiences, from facing systemic forms of racism ranging disproportionate discipline actions against Native American students to harmful and offensive public-school curriculum, Anahuacalmecac International University continues to provide Indigenous students a sanctuary for learning. Our guest for today, discuss the schools progress over the years and its new American Indian Resurgence Initiative and how it will benefit Indigenous students and parents in providing a more enriching, safe, and dynamic equivalent high school education. https://ndgnsla.org/. Guest: • Marcos Aguilar, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Academia Semillas del Pueblo and Head of the School at Anahuacalmecac International University in Los Angeles County, CA.
September 16, 2021-- Chris Skyhawk's guests are Yurok Tribal Council Vice Chairman Frankie Myers about the upcoming name change of Patrick's Point State Park, and Angelina Cook from the McCloud Watershed Council about water use policies in these times of drought and climate change.

The Steel City has boasted some of the most famous figures, landmarks and innovations in the country's history. Pittsburgh's past is littered with dozens of fascinating stories behind the icons that define it. Mary Schenley was the city's biggest benefactress of the nineteenth century, gifting the site of the 425-acre park in her name, but her fortune was almost lost when she eloped at the age of fifteen. The first ever call-in radio talk show began at famed KDKA in 1951, inspiring the birth of an entire industry. Mount Washington offers tourists sweeping views of the city today, but it once supplied coal to Pittsburghers and was the site of a sixteen-year underground mine fire. Author Paul King lists the best people, places and things of Pittsburgh's grand history. Paul King is a native of Pittsburgh, raised on Mount Washington with a grand view of the three rivers, Point State Park, the North Side and the downtown skyline. A graduate of Duquesne University, he has been a journalist for more than forty years. Description courtesy of The History Press.
It all began as a Bucket List thing. For decades I'd heard about Dead Horse Point and hoped one day to see this place which inspires rapturous testimonials about the views, the beauty and the grandeur which many travelers will swear on a stack of red rock shale rivals The Grand Canyon. If canyons had a beauty contest, I'd be a terrible judge. They're all winners to me. But if you're looking to avoid crowds, Dead Horse Point is a good bet. 2-13-18 Tonight we're continuing our AMMA Conference Speaker Showcase and have Greg Heller-LaBelle, owner of The Colony Meadery and Chrissie Manion Zaerpoor, author of The Art of Mead and Food Pairing. Greg Heller-LaBelle is the CEO and co-founder of The Colony Meadery in Allentown, PA. Prior to that, he drove the success and growth of startup ventures in industries ranging from community banking to math educational technology. A passionate believer in community and economic development, Greg started his career at the economic development nonprofit Riverlife in Pittsburgh, where he coordinated communications around major land development projects, including stadiums and Point State Park revitalization. He also has worked and volunteered on several political campaigns, ranging from city council to president. In his off time, Greg was a writer who had successful blogs on politics, beer and art (and, sometimes, how they interact). An alumnus of Pitt and Lehigh, he’s lived in Bethlehem three times, Pittsburgh twice, and Mexico once. Now he lives in Bethlehem with his wife and their bulldog, Disraeli. As Legislative Affairs Chair of the AMMA, Greg has overseen several major achievements, including: common formulas and COLAs from the TTB; a relaxation of barrel aging in meads; and the passage of the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act, which is the first legislation to carve out specific tax benefits for mead. In Pennsylvania, his work with the Assembly led to a change in laws that permitted meaderies to work with wholesalers. Greg will be giving a wide-ranging talk on how to successfully interact with the TTB at the AMMA Conference, featuring everything from formulas to labels, with a robust time for Q&A. Our second guest this evening, Chrissie Manion Zaerpoor, holds a B.S. in Physics from Arizona State University, and “most of a master’s degree” in electrical engineering and semiconductor materials and device characterization from Columbia University. She was a process engineer and engineering manager at Intel Corporation for 13 years before founding Kookoolan Farms in Yamhill, Oregon, in 2005, with her husband Koorosh. She first heard the word “mead” in high school English class in about 1981 and has been obsessed with mead ever since; she’s been an amateur meadmaker since 1997 and a licensed commercial meadery owner since 2009 Kookoolan World Meadery (approximately the 80th licensed American meadery). Kookoolan Farms meads have twice won medals at Mazer Cup International (2014 and 2015 silver medals). Chrissie was a founding director of the American Mead Makers Association, its first Legislative Committee Chair, and contributing editor and frequent contributor to the AMMA Journal, as well as to the new publication MeadMag.com. She is the author of “The Art of Mead Tasting and Food Pairing,” published 2017 and in consideration both for the Gourmand and James Beard cookbook awards. She is the Keynote Speaker and lead lecturer for the University of California/Davis Honey and Pollination Center’s newest mead course, “Intermediate Mead Making: The Styles and Nuances of Mead,” February 2018. www.facebook.com/meadandfood Chrissie will be talking about pairing Mead and Food, both for home meadmakers and pros. Her presentation will be an overview of mead pairing strategies for more enjoyment of your meads at home; using your knowledge of food pairings to design better-selling meads; to sell more mead in the tasting room; and to sell more mead to restaurants. 1. “Impact” (body and intensity of the drink and the food should match): big meads with big food; delicate meads with light food 2. The Locked 'n Loaded best-dressed guest ante has been accepted and upped. This week, we've got IWC rookie Calvin Couture in studio, and he brought his A-game, replete with his bow tie and sequinned jacket. He outshines, almost literally, our crew of Sorg, Chad the Shad, Mutilator Larry, and Bobby F J-Town as we talk this week in wrestling: There's a WWE pay-per-view this weekend! (And, we're going to play some video games.) So John Cena and Roman Reigns? What was with Roman Reigns pulling out Rock v John Cena promos? Chad is sharing some thoughts about how good WWE teams are these days. When's the last time we saw a rivalry for something other than a belt? Are we setting up a Wyatt Family v Club feud? Putting it here so it's in writing: Someone just threw out Goldust as Finn Balor's dad. Are we going to see an Emma win? Apparently WWE broke Jordan and Gable up too soon. Why?!?! We need some Surf Dudes With Attitudes in WWE. Starcade is happening? Is there a chance we'll see Cody Rhodes and Dustin Rhodes team up for Starcade? Speaking of Starcade, WrestleCade is also in North Carolina the same weekend? NXT should takeover the old WCW and ECW pay-per-view titles. Crack beers like Stone Cold in Point State Park is an actual event here in Pittsburgh! Sorg is stuck on TNA like a fly on a bug zapper. He just can't turn away. This week's Big Question: Who would make a good 2017 addition to the Heenan family? What did YOU learn in wrestling this week? Hit the Bullseye: Knowing your target audiences and what they want—is essential to marketing success. Yet companies often miss the mark and don't clearly and truthfully define their target markets. One company that took the Hit the Bullseye approach to a whole new level is Kolcraft, a international baby product manufacturer based in Chicago.Kolcraft wanted the target audience for buying their product—parents—to experience what the actual customers who use their product—children—experience. So they built an super-sized baby stroller twice the size of the one for babies: 7 feet 6 inches high, 6 feet deep and 4 feet wide. Guest: Stephan Bontrager is Director of Communications for Riverlife a public-private partnership working to build downtown Pittsburgh's urban riverfront park system. Prior to Riverlife, Stephan was Director of Education and Community Engagement for public radio station 91.3 fm WYEP, where he also served as the on-air Midday Mix host.Stephan walks us through Three Rivers Park, Pittsburgh's 13-mile interconnected riverfront. With over 80% of the park complete and many more projects underway, Three Rivers Park is shaping up to be unlike any urban waterfront in the world. What's The Big Idea? Stephan's Big Idea relates to Riverlife's substantial public and private fundraising efforts, specifically tied to the restoration of the Point State Park fountain. The non profit achieved their fundraising goal with a campaign built around the theme:Without the fountain, what's the Point?
