He notes that the film skips the money angle entirely, even though the family went from spending both salaries to saving one of them outright. His own point is that you do not need a no-impact life to see the benefit, since modest attention to the details already cuts consumption dramatically. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://www.mrmoneymustache.com/2011/11/01/mr-money-mustache-vs-no-impact-man/ Quotes to ponder: "They became better parents. They became happier, and noticeably healthier as well." "We still have everything we want and need and more, but it all adds up to only 25% of what most of our wealthy neighbors are spending per year." "Even by just paying a tiny bit of attention to the details, I find that you can have the whole middle-class lifestyle with well under a third of the standard US level of consumption." Roth shares what a team of UCLA anthropologists found when they documented the possessions inside 32 typical American homes, from overflowing garages to a second refrigerator out in the garage. He explains that we have built plenty of ways to bring things in and almost none for letting them go, and that the pile carries a real emotional and financial cost. What does success really look like—and who gets to define it? In the final episode of this three-part conversation, Dr. Kim sits down with Tom Pfeiffer to talk about the subtle ways we drift from our priorities without even realizing it. Together they unpack why saying "yes" to every good opportunity can cost us what matters most, how small daily habits shape the life we're building, and why true success isn't measured by titles or achievements but by living a life that's aligned with your values. Whether you're feeling stuck, stretched too thin, or simply wondering if you're chasing the right things, this conversation will challenge you to slow down, evaluate what's most important, and take one intentional step toward the life God is calling you to live. Episode Highlights: Learn how "priority drift" quietly pulls you away from what matters most—and how to stop it. Why chasing alignment instead of success leads to greater freedom, purpose, and peace. Simple daily habits that create lasting change, both personally and professionally. Practical encouragement to stop waiting for the perfect moment and start taking the next right step. Quotes from This Episode: Tom Pfeifer: "Priority drift doesn't happen all at once. It's one extra meeting, one extra commitment, one extra 'yes.'" "Every time you say yes to something, you're saying no to something else." "Success is what other people can see. Alignment is when the life you're living matches the values you say you have." "The best decision I ever made was to stop chasing success and start chasing alignment." "Sports are supposed to be fun. You're not going to war." "So many of the things we worry about are first-world problems." "Don't quit your job tomorrow. Start stacking proof one day at a time." "Your habits become discipline, and discipline will always outlast motivation." "Everyone has the same 24 hours. It's not about having time—it's about the choices you make." "Just do the thing. Take the first step and let tomorrow build on today." Dr. Kim Kimberling: "Culture doesn't pull us away from what matters overnight—it happens one small drift at a time." "When we say yes to too many good things, we often end up saying no to the people who matter most." "The hardest part of protecting your priorities is learning to say no." "You don't always realize you're drifting until you look up and wonder how you got so far from what matters." "Don't get impatient. Big life changes are built one step at a time." "Working out changes far more than your body—it changes your confidence and your mindset." "One day stacked on another becomes a habit, and habits shape the life you live." "Ask yourself: Are you drifting? And if you are, where is that drift taking you?" "The best opportunities aren't always the ones that align with your priorities." "You have to define success for yourself instead of letting culture define it for you." Time to Talk About It: Where have you noticed "priority drift" in your own life, and what's one step you can take to realign with what matters most? How do you currently define success? Has that definition changed over the years? What's one habit or daily choice that could help you become more intentional with your time, relationships, or calling?

He describes how the pressure shows up again when young adults choose careers, values, or lifestyles their parents did not expect, and argues that parents cannot control their young adults but can still influence them by shifting from caretaking to encouraging independence. He closes with a parent report card for measuring parenting against love, consistency, apology, and letting go. Building HVAC Science - Building Performance, Science, Health & Comfort
Quotes from the episode: "I don't need the house to breathe. I need the people to." "You can't control a system that's open." "I would just go make them comfortable. And let them know the added benefit is that they're going to spend less on energy." What happens when an HVAC contractor fixes the equipment, but the customer still isn't comfortable? In this episode of Building HVAC Science, Bill Spohn talks with Ken Allsion of Insulation Distributors (IDI) about why HVAC contractors are uniquely positioned to recognize—and potentially solve - problems with the building envelope. Ken argues that comfort complaints often blamed on heating and cooling equipment actually begin with uncontrolled air leakage, poorly installed insulation, and mechanical systems operating outside the thermal envelope. Ken lays out a practical path for HVAC companies interested in adding envelope work without trying to turn every technician into a building scientist. It starts simply: train technicians to recognize obvious problems such as daylight, wind-washed insulation, unsealed attic hatches, and other signs of leakage. From there, contractors can progress to blower-door testing and infrared diagnostics, and eventually tackle more sophisticated envelope improvements. A recurring theme is that insulation only performs as intended when air movement is controlled. Ken explains why nominal R-value can be misleading, how small areas of poorly performing insulation can dramatically reduce whole-assembly performance, and why he prioritizes air sealing at the top and bottom of the building before worrying about walls. The conversation also explores an important business opportunity. Ken sees attic insulation removal, air sealing, and blow-back as relatively low-barrier services that complement HVAC work while allowing specialized crews - not highly trained HVAC technicians—to perform the labor. Most importantly, Ken challenges contractors to rethink what they're really selling. Rather than leading with energy savings, start with what homeowners actually care about: comfort, healthier indoor conditions, and a house that works better. Reduced energy use becomes a valuable consequence of fixing the building—not necessarily the reason for doing it. He walks through how purpose fuels energy, how habits reduce the decisions that drain it, and why monotasking conserves more of it than multitasking. The takeaway is to organize work around peak performance periods rather than around a to-do list. He runs the same ten principles through both, from tracking calories or spending, to weekly check-ins, written goals, public accountability, and rewards that do not undo the progress. His argument is that neither one works as a crash program, and that paying down debt is a lifestyle change rather than a sprint. Have you ever walked away from a conversation with your spouse thinking, "That's not what I meant at all"? Or wondered why you keep having the same argument over and over again? The truth is, most couples aren't struggling because they don't love each other, they're struggling because they communicate differently. In this episode, Dr. Kim is joined by licensed therapist and author Jason Van Ruler to unpack the five communication types and why understanding your spouse's communication style can completely change the way you approach conflict. They talk about why we so often take our differences personally, how stress affects the way we communicate, and why learning to truly listen may be the most powerful thing you can do for your marriage. If you've ever felt misunderstood or wished your spouse "just got you," this conversation will help you replace frustration with understanding and give you practical tools to communicate in a way that brings you closer instead of pushing you apart. Episode Highlights: Why communication breaks down—and why it's probably not for the reason you think. Discover your communication type and learn how it shapes every conversation with your spouse. Simple shifts that will help you feel more seen, heard, and understood in your marriage. Stop taking communication differences personally and start using them to grow closer. Quotes from This Episode: Jason VanRuler "We aren't very well versed in communicating for connection." "The more we feel we can't communicate, the more we believe the lie that our spouse must like it that way." "We're experts in what we meant, but we're not experts in what our spouse experienced." "Understanding your communication type takes the personal offense out of conflict and helps you ask, 'What did they mean?'" "A great communicator isn't someone who thinks they're communicating well—it's someone who understands how other people experience them." "When life gets hard, we all go back to our primary communication style. That's why understanding each other matters most in conflict." "From birth, we all want to feel seen, heard, and understood." Dr. Kim Kimberling "Most couples don't know why they struggle to communicate—they just know it creates distance." "We're fighting our differences instead of embracing them and learning how they can strengthen our marriage." "Bad communication gets in the way of being a great team." "When I really learned to listen to Nancy, it changed our marriage." "Sometimes the simplest advice is the most powerful: let your spouse finish." "If you attack the problem, you can find a solution. If you dance around it, you'll never solve it." "The healthiest marriages keep working on communication because every season of life requires new ways of understanding each other." Time to Talk About it: When do you feel the most heard and understood by me? Is there anything I could do differently to help you feel that way more often? Which communication style do you think describes each of us best, and how have our differences helped—or challenged—our marriage? What's one small change we could each make this week to communicate with more grace, patience, and understanding? She weighs the thin evidence behind alcohol's supposed health benefits against its documented costs, then offers practical nutrition advice for athletes who still drink socially, including quenching thirst with water first, eating a real meal alongside, and choosing lower-alcohol options. Her through line is that recovery is where training gains are protected or lost. Projects rarely fail from a lack of templates — they fail because of people. Author Dawn Mahan reveals the animal avatars that help you spot the cheerleader, the finicky fan, and the saboteur before one of them bites you in the ankle. Why do projects really fail? Not, as guest Dawn Mahan argues, from a shortage of templates or Gantt charts — but from the people around them. In this episode, Kim and Kate dig into the human side of project delivery: the stakeholders who love your project, the ones who quietly want it dead, and the "style under stress" that surfaces when the pressure cooker of Projectland heats up. If you've ever been blindsided by a saboteur or tripped up by an over-eager cheerleader, this conversation on stakeholder management, risk, and project leadership is for you. Kim and Kate welcome Dawn Mahan, author of the bestselling Meet the Players in Project Land and co-editor of Project Land Goes to the Movies: 22 Blockbuster Strategies for Project Success. Dawn's premise is refreshingly human: projects rarely fail because the paperwork is wrong — they fail because the people involved aren't set up for success. Using animal avatars to make stakeholder behavior easier, and safer, to talk about, she gives project managers and leaders a practical vocabulary for the messy, political, feelings-driven reality of getting work done inside real organizations. Grab a drink and join us. Quotes from the Episode "If you're skipping through the meadow of project land toward your goal, one might just jump up and bite you in the ankle when you least expect it…" — Dawn Mahan "You've got a style under stress." — Kate Anderson "Instead of being a cheerleader, she accidentally became a saboteur." — Dawn Mahan "I believe PMs are in the pain prevention business." — Dawn Mahan "Any of us can sabotage our own lives, relationships, projects, even." — Dawn Mahan Practical Takeaways The three stakeholder archetypes — the cheerleader (happy dog), the finicky fan (flamingo), and the saboteur (snake), and how each one engages with or endangers a project. "Style under stress" — how both stakeholder and team behavior shifts under pressure, and why leaders should plan for those reactions in advance. Stakeholder analysis as a scheduled activity — running it privately with the sponsor, casting a wide net, documenting decisions, and coding the stakeholder register discreetly. The "Feel" question — asking "How do you feel about this?" instead of "What do you think?" to surface fear and identify project risk early. Managing cheerleaders with soundbites — the Stakeholder Gabby lesson on why enthusiastic champions can accidentally become saboteurs, and how to channel their energy constructively. Closing Reflection Perhaps the most human insight of the episode is Dawn's reminder that any of us can sabotage our own projects. Sabotage isn't always evil; more often it's fear, miscommunication, or a stakeholder who simply doesn't understand how Projectland works. The leadership question worth sitting with: who on your project is operating from fear right now — and what could you do to change that?

She points out that most people need seven to eight hours, that no one can train themselves to need less, and that chronic sleep debt shows up at work as poorer decisions, weaker memory, and more mistakes. Her recommendation for anyone serious about performance is to treat good sleep habits as the first step rather than the last.
