A couple of months ago the motherboard died. I wanted to record TV directly to one of my UNRAID servers up in the attic. Unfortunately, there are no TV aerial coax connections in the attic. I decided to buy this box. You can plug the HDHomeRun into your aerial in the lounge and use the other aerial connector to plug directly into the TV. The HD Homerun has an ethernet port so I can connect to another box somewhere on the network. Using Emby I can connect directly to the box to watch live TV. Emby on my UNRAID server supports HDHomeRun, so I can record TV programs using the schedule from the HDHomerun. I can watch Emby recordings from anywhere else on the planet that has WiFi and decent Internet access. Every Internet-facing application accesses data over an already-secure connection. There's nothing bad guys could do even if they were to somehow intercept random batches of your over-the-air 1s and 0s. VPNs are OTT security. It will make activity significantly slower, because of extra encryption - pages will take longer to load, videos will buffer more. You just don't need a VPN. You really don't. Even in a dodgy cybercafe in Turkey. Your own encryption, built into your OS and applications, is quite enough. One caveat to all this - VPN's ability to fake where you are in the world to a service that you're accessing. Which is borderline illegal, or at least against terms of service of whichever service you're accessing. But so what? Save your money! “Motivation is when your dreams put on work clothes” ― Benjamin Franklin I love this quote. Yesterday, I talked about taking time out and making sure we take the time to recharge. It is vitally important… But it is also important to remember not to stay there.. :) We have to make progress on our true dreams. When we find our Quest, our powerful Personal Purpose, we need to make sure we are progressing towards it every day. Even if it is a tiny baby step. That is where motivation comes from. Cassidy Miles (co-host; She/Her) embarks on a topic that is often misunderstood. Dig in and find out why. Podcast guest, Dr. Jason DeBoer (He/Him) of the Illinois Natural History Survey joins in the conversation. The article we reference in the episode is found here: https://www.learningforjustice.org/magazine/fall-2018/what-is-white-privilege-really Quote mentioned in the podcast: “We need to be clear that there is no such thing as giving up one's privilege to be ‘outside' the system. One is always in the system. The only question is whether one is part of the system in a way that challenges or strengthens the status quo. Privilege is not something I take and which therefore have the option of not taking. It is something that society gives me, and unless I change the institutions which give it to me, they will continue to give it, and I will continue to have it, however noble and equalitarian my intentions.” − Harry Brod, “Work Clothes and Leisure Suits: The Class Basis and Bias of the Men's Movement,” in Men's Lives, ed. On this week's Dating Den, Marni speaks with New York-based Image Consultant and Personal Stylist for high achieving women, Melanie Lippman. Melanie advises clients about the clothes and self-talk to uplevel their confidence. She designs personal wardrobes for her clients that can eliminate overwhelm. She shares her best tips for dressing to increase your approachability factor. Key takeaways from this episode: What clothes match your personality Why wearing oversized clothes is a no-no Why some women hide underneath their clothes Style tips for dressing for a date What to wear on the weekends Clothes Send a Message About Who You Are [2:32] Many women wear oversized clothes because of body image issues that started when they were just children. Little girls are sponges during our formative years and just one comment from an aunt or sibling and we are stuck with that limiting belief until we change it. Most of us experience this when we are going through a struggle, like the bad lighting in the fitting room. Why do we fear calling attention to ourselves? Melanie says when limiting beliefs about our bodies come up we should think about where those thoughts came from. Then approach style from the opposite direction and think about what style can do FOR us. Often we females, hurt ourselves with negative self-talk. We tend to focus on things we don't like when we look in the mirror and instead we need to focus on what lights us up. Stop using clothes to hide, it's not what clothes are for. Your personal style is all about being authentic and having fun with it. You don't want to feel like you are putting on a costume. Send the right message. Make sure the way you show up is in alignment with the message you want to send. Because if you don't it can come off as inauthentic and it causes distrust. Clothing is the largest form of non-verbal communication. Make sure you are sending the message you want to be sending. Why Are You Hiding? [18:24] Marni mentions that she has several beautiful, curvy clients and they have a story about their body. They feel they need to wear oversized dresses to hide their body. Melanie relates because she used to wear clothes that were too big for her. She had to learn to dress for her body type. You have to accept your body type and enjoy what you have. Wearing bulky clothes or boxy clothes will make you look two sizes bigger than you actually are. A simple strategy to make you look and feel your best: Learn your body type Dress in a way that balances your proportions Melanie says, “our eyes seek symmetry”. And, with a few optical illusions, we can create that symmetry. Just changing a few little things allows us to dress confidently. But, All my Clothes are Work Clothes [27:25] Many high-achieving women focus their wardrobe mainly on clothes for the office. These women have a ton of work clothes but when it comes to an outfit to go out on a date, they don’t know what to wear. Melanie says that if this is you invest a little time and energy into finding out what the fun side of you wants to wear. What adjective would you want your weekend style to be? This is where you get to have fun. What is the fun version of you? Remember these three tips: Dress for your body type Incorporate your personality into your weekend wardrobe You don't have to be uncomfortable Make a Connection: Visit Our Website Join Our Dating Den Facebook Community Here! Our guest today is Lisa Marx. Lisa is a journey level scaffolder, a member of the local 70, and a passionate advocate of career opportunities for women in the trades. We will open today’s conversation by learning how Lisa first became interested in scaffolding as a career, and how that decision transformed her life for the better when she joined the UBC. Next, we’ll delve into what opportunities are available for those interested in becoming a professional carpenter and discuss some of the assistance programs designed to help those just starting to get off on the right foot. Later, Lisa will tell about the recent, Trades Women Build Nation Virtual Conference she attended and we'll investigate the additional challenges women may face in the field, such as sexism, harassment and implicit bias. We’ll then wrap up our conversation by discussing the importance of developing support groups to gain confidence and craft skills in order to be successful on the job.
