Staying true to our commitment to record more episodes this year, we hop back on after the Lunar New Year to discuss a variety of topics, ranging from 2025 being Stef's lucky year, to how Jesse Eisenberg's directorial debut embodies the representation we didn't know we needed! We also dive into the significance of identifying your Core Values and allowing those to guide decisions, what to say ‘yes' or ‘no' to, instead of operating either out of the fear of missing out or the fear of losing relevance and impact. As always, the Making Strides Podcast is about building representation and about changing the ways we expect ourselves and others to show up in the running world. We hope you enjoy this convo (take us with you on your next run!), and if you do, please subscribe and leave a rating and review! We are so grateful you're here — in this space, in the sport, and in this world! #keepshowingup, keep taking up space, and keep on being the change we wish to see.Special thanks to our Audio Engineer, Mark Kalagayan, from the non-profit, SPARC Worldwide.#MakingStridesPod#letsFlippindothis#diversewerunShow Notes:1:00 - Is the name “Lunar New Year” actually accurate?!7:01 - The Year of the Snake and The Year of Stef!13:10 - Time management and multi-tasking20:10 - How meditation practice is going23:15 - Identifying core values 43:05 - “A Real Pain” movie55:45 - What's ahead56:40 - Coaching athletes for WSER for GU and Rising Hearts, building representation and giving access to overlooked communities1:02:35 - Upcoming travelsLinks:Free trial to Op-e-n Meditation AppLive Your Values Card DeckArmchair Expert Podcast with Jesse EisenbergWestern State athletes being sponsored by GU Energy Labs and Rising Hearts:Miki SawadaFaith AkioyamenScott FlatlipFind Stef hereFind Carolyn here and here

On this week's episode, we chat with Alex Staten and Stefanie Flippin. Alex is a trail and ultra runner from Fayetteville, Arkansas, a Diné and Mexican woman, and this year's Gu Energy Labs and Rising Hearts athlete in the Western States Endurance Run. If you followed along with Golden Hour at Western States, you followed Alex's journey from Olympic Valley to Placer High, where she missed the cut off on the track by 2 minutes and 50 seconds. Her day was one of rising above countless challenges and willing her body to the finish line, for reasons far beyond herself. Stef Flippin is a professional trail and ultra runner for Gu Energy labs and lululemon, physician, coach, and podcast host. She had the privilege of being a coach and holistic mentor for GU's and Rising Hearts' diversity runners at this year's edition of Western States. Stef and Alex formed a lasting bond over the last year as a result of Alex's journey to Western States. We hear about Alex's history in ultrarunning, Alex and Stef's coaching relationship, her WSER build, her involvement with Trail Sisters in Arkansas, the partnership between Rising Hearts and Gu Energy Labs, and ultimately, how Alex's day at Western States played out. A special thanks to Osprey for their support. What we talked about: 2:35- Alex's introduction to trail running 7:45- Stefanie's relationship with Gu and passion for coaching 11:10- What was different for Alex for Western States versus her first 100 miler 15:35- Stefanie's experience tailoring Alex's training for Western States 20:00- What Alex's training block looked like going into Western States 27:30- Being involved with the Trail Sisters organnization 34:50- Alex recapping her race start to finish 51:30- Alex's crew during the race 55:00- When cutoffs came into play 1:06:30- Stefanie's view of Alex's finish 1:12:30- Running with Purpose 1:14:35- What's next for Alex The Trail Network Podcast is edited and produced by Sandyboy Productions Podcast Network
A recent article on irunfar.com made quite a splash, when the [white] authors called for feedback on the new 'progressive' initiatives launched by the Pro Trail Runners Association, and BIPOC women answered by calling out the lack of intersectionality and diversity. In this episode, Stef and Carolyn address the harm that was caused while still acknowledging the good intent behind the initiatives, and they discuss the bigger picture of why feminism and inclusivity must be addressed with an openness to accountability. Show Notes 1:25 - diving into Western States 100 (WSER) and the [lack of] diversity, inclusivity, and accessibility 4:00 - "you can be a good human and still make mistakes" 5:10 - overview of WSER, including pre-race events 7:30 - context for on-going concerns with spotlight ultra events such as WSER/UTMB and the driving force behind initiatives for change 9:50 - "what we don't need is continued divisiveness; we need to hold accountability and a path forward in how to educate and work together." 11:20 - "let's not make the mistake of making the discomfort of addressing a problem, the actual problem." 12:25 - article on irunfar and what was problematic about it 15:50 - inclusion is not implied; it needs to be explicitly addressed 17:40 - DM from BIPOC ultra trail runner who was at WSER 23:55 - the imperative to speak up and why it matters 24:50 - the cost of the White Gaze 29:10 - not acknowledging an aspect (like race) of a person is erasure 37:20 - what would it be like to be able to purely focus on performance goals without having to also hold the weight of inequities, invisibility, and representation? 43:00 - burnout 54:35 - real change happens when you enter into relationships 58:50 - true inclusion requires safety 1:03:00 - looking ahead Additional Links: GU Energy Labs and their work with Rising Hearts and athlete Alexandria Staten Filmmaker and Rising Hearts founder, Jordan Whetstone Filmmaker and Podcaster, Faith E. Stef and I get more into our different experiences growing up as Asian Americans — like how I felt like I was constantly straddling two separate worlds and identities, while Stef moved about not acknowledging her Asian ancestry. We also share about the steps we've taken as adults to reclaim and celebrate our heritage, whether through cooking more cultural foods, amplifying Asian American runners, or participating in more Asian American-centered events. This was a whole therapy session, yall! We also start to touch upon our thoughts on how social media has shaped running culture and community — and full disclosure: this topic is definitely to be continued! There are lots of unpack! Special s/o to Alexandria Staten, the Rising Hearts athlete whom Stef has been coaching and who will be lining up to run Western States 100 this weekend! Make sure to go show her some love!! We hope you enjoy this convo (take us with you on your next run!), and of course, subscribe, leave a rating and review if you do! For the past 2 decades, Terry has been guiding her clients towards realizing their full potential. But Terry's impact doesn't stop there! As host of her own podcast, Extraordinary Work: Conversations about Creating Change, she shines a spotlight on those individuals who are making waves in their own spheres, driving positive change and innovation. Come listen to how Terry has constantly reinvented herself, taking herself to the next level each time, and be inspired knowing you have the ability to do the same thing! As this episode was recorded on May 5 - National Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day, this episode is dedicated to: Hanna Harris Hanna Harris was born on May 5, 1992, a citizen of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. She was only 21 on July 4, 2013 when she left the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation to go into nearby Lame Deer, Montana, to watch the Independence Day fireworks. She never returned home. When her family reported her missing, local law enforcement downplayed her disappearance. Four days later, a volunteer search team found her body. It was determined that she was brutally raped and murdered. In some tribal communities, Native American Women face murder rates that are more than 10 times the national average; homicide is the 4th leading cause of death for Native women and girls between the ages of 1 and 19, and the 5th leading cause of death for ages 20 to 24. Almost half of all Native American women have experienced physical violence, and one of three will, at some point in their life, experience the violence and trauma of rape according to the Department of Justice. Help support Rising Hearts to bring awareness and fight against these injustices. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Terry Yoffe can be reached at the following places: https://trycoaching.com/ Instagram: @TerryYoffe LinkedIn Facebook email: terry@trycoaching.com You can also listen ter her podcast, Extraordinary Work: Conversations about Creating Change on Apple iHeartRadio Spotify --------------------------------------------------------------- Kerri can be found on Instagram: @running_with_the_rockstar Facebook: Every Run Has a Story You can find Paul - The Rhode Runner in the following places: Twitter: @TheRhodeRunner Instagram: @TheRhodeRunner Facebook Inspiring Journeys can be found on: InspiringJourneys.net Instagram: @InspiringJourneysPod Facebook You can also download and subscribe to the Inspiring Journeys Podcast at: Apple Podcasts iHeartRadio Spotify
When I started Native ChocTalk, my goal was to support others in preserving their Native American ancestral stories. Some of us heard our families telling the accounts of those who came before us, but without preservation, many of those stories are now dust in the wind. I'm proud of my guest and friend, Stanford Lake (Diné) who agreed to share some Navajo history and ancestral stories with us, and I think you will also enjoy! In the final part of this series, Stanford shares about: • His late shicheii (his grandpa), Ned Cly, of the Kinyaa'aanii clan, who was born behind the “Three Sisters” Ned was also recruited a few times to be in John Wayne movie sets! • Bahe Bessie Parrish, his shimásání (grandma), who was a traditional medicine woman • The Long Walk - a dark time in Navajo history • His 3x great grandfather, Chief Hashkéníinii who led his people to safety • The origination of frybread • The Navajo's 4-clan system • Some inspiration for all you runners out there Stanford would like to promote the following organizations – check them out! Red Earth Running Company: https://redearthrun.co/ Native Women Running: https://www.nativewomenrunning.com/ Rising Hearts: https://www.risinghearts.org/nativelands I hope as you listen to Stanford, you'll be inspired to also record and preserve the stories of your ancestors. You won't regret it – it's a gift you give to your family and your descendants. God bless! “Through our program, “Running on Native Lands Initiative” to bring land blessings and land acknowledgments to life at these events, at races, but also go beyond that and really bring communities together, bring awareness to Indigenous peoples, bring awareness to Indigenous stewardship, the lands, the history, the people connected to them, even if they were displaced or not there presently. But also just an access point to continue those conversations of what does justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, accessibility, affordability, and safety look like when we are trying to create these safe spaces, inclusive spaces within the running and outdoor industry.”Jordan Marie Whetstone is passionate about community and storytelling. The opportunity to tell Yatika Starr Fields's story at the Western States 100 and also work to bring the first land acknowledgment to the race is something Whetstone was excited to document. She and her husband created a beautiful film on a limited budget and found a great subject to follow in Yatika. This film is one of my favourites so far as it's absolutely stunning and the storytelling is fantastic. Jordan wants her work to have an impact on people and brands.“That's the whole purpose of why we wanted to create this series was to spark these conversations to get people uncomfortable, especially if it does make them uncomfortable and to sit with that and to ask them, what's making me feel uncomfortable? How can I sit with this and process, but take it in a proactive way and in a positive way to do better, to unlearn or relearn… …how can we be a good relative to each other, how can we grow our community together as a collective and how can we just be good humans?”Jordan is also the founder and organizer behind Rising Hearts. The “Know to Run” series continues with more great people featured that you can follow along with. They are looking for funding for episode 3. I'm looking forward to catching these and whatever else they get up to, as “Know to Run: Yatika” is so good, they've got me hooked on waiting for the rest! This week I had the pleasure to speak to Kelsey Long. She is a Navajo runner living on the Choctaw Reservation in Oklahoma. She recently completed the Boston Marathon for Rising Hearts. She is also part of the Renew Earth Running Run Team and helped create a Dirtbags Run, a Dirtbag Runners Program, that consists of 21 BIPOC trail runners. Talking with Kelsey was so much fun. She has done quite a lot in the short time that she has been running. She talks about hating running and only getting into it several years ago because of her energetic dog. She talks about finding her group and starting to attend races and how she had caught the running bug. We talk about her journey and finding a running coach to help improve and then looking for another coach when that didn't work out. Kelsey talks about seeing other native runners using their voice and running to advocate for things she also believes in and wanting to do the same thing. We talk about running Boston to fundraise for Rising Hearts. She also talks about the Boston Marathon experience. We also talk about the forming of Dirtbags Run, their goal, and being visible. I didn't realize this was something she was involved in and I'm really impressed and excited about the group. As Kelsey herself says, she's high achieving, and I'm excited to see what she does in the running space with her advocacy going forward. It's getting warm out there (finally). I am hoping the whiplash of cold and warm weather is finally over, but that means it's time to run early and hydrate well. We also have state track meets going on. I hope you are enjoying where you are in your training and running. So get your shoes tied, get a buddy, and keep running, New Mexico. While active in her early years, Callie adopted a lifestyle in college that left her staring down an early death sentence. It was a reality that her physician brought to her attention more than once, but it wasn't until she faced a one-mile walk to brunch that she decided to change. A decade later, we find Callie on the other side of numerous ultrarunning events, including the Moab 240. And currently, she is gearing up for the iconic Western States 100 endurance run this coming June, where she will represent the Indigenous advocacy nonprofit Rising Hearts and GU Energy Labs. Please enjoy this story of a woman who took charge of her health and created herself a better world inside and out. Thank you to our patrons who support this podcast and the Awake Athlete podcast on Patreon. If you want to learn about what it means to be a patron, please visit patreon.com/yogitriathlete. In this episode, we discuss: - the brunch that changed her - building momentum slowly - journey to running - Moab 240 - running in the dark - inspiration for others to pursue their passion - food as fuel, not just pleasure - fueling with GU Energy - the ongoing forgiveness process & loving your body - rebranding a runner's body - what are you waiting for? Just do it - the inchworm story - full circle to the Western States 100 Namaste- Jess
When Yatika Starr Fields, an Indigenous runner, artist, and advocate, ran the Western States 100 in 2022, it wasn't only for himself; it was for the Native American community. For the first time, the Western States Endurance Run officially acknowledged the Washoe tribe, the original stewards of the land on which their race takes place, and they released their first official race poster, from one of Yatika's paintings. Yatika's experience at Western States is the subject of the new short film, Know To Run, produced by the Indigenous-led, grassroots organization Rising Hearts. Running is much more than a sport to Liz Rock, co-founder of the Bra Run and the women's running crew, TrailblazHers. Its impact on her goes far beyond the physical benefits. As Liz says, “Running has been such a huge pillar in my life that it's legit changed who I am.” She's changing the lives of other women, as well. TrailblazHers isn't about competition; it's about collaboration. It takes a holistic approach to its community, caring about its members' mental, spiritual and emotional health, not just the mileage that they run. It's about women believing in themselves and holding space for each other. For complete show notes and links, visit our website at runningforreal.com/episode341. The butterfly effect is the idea that one small action can have much larger effects. If a 14-year-old named Tina Muir hadn't met Brad Plummer, you wouldn't be listening to this podcast. Brad was Tina's first coach, and without his guidance, who knows what path she might have followed… As Tina says, he is one of the most pivotal human beings in her entire life. In this very personal episode, Tina and Brad reflect on their history together. It's a special look at the relationship between athlete and coach. Allie Ostrander is the example that she needed when she was younger. She was a high school track phenom, three-time NCAA steeplechase champion, and a professional runner with Brooks Beasts. But she suffered from an eating disorder the entire time, resulting in a string of injuries. In 2021, she entered an intensive recovery program, and went public with her story while she was there. She hopes that by sharing her experience she can educate young people and help them avoid the consequences of eating disorders and RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport). Tina reflects on what we did at Running for Real in 2022, and shares some of our exciting plans for 2023. We've had a growing focus on environmental action, which we'll continue to pursue. We're launching a terrific online resource, “RED-S: Realize, Reflect, Recover” to help anyone affected by Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport, from beginner runners to elite athletes. And of course we've welcomed amazing, inspiring guests to the podcast, and look forward to introducing our audience to many more. There's a lot to look back on and forward to! You may have seen pics of her while running her Prayer Runs with a red hand print over her mouth to pay tribute to the unheard voices of others she fights for. In this conversation we discussed and explored: * Land acknowledgment * Growing up indigenous in Maine * Using the lands to help find yourself * Confronting an addiction or disorder * Her time on “The Hill” in DC * Prayer Runs * MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) * And of course RUNNING! I hope you learned from and/or connected with this episode! You can find Jordan on IG @nativein_la ( https://instagram.com/nativein_la?igshid=MWI4MTIyMDE= )

Episode Notes BONUS – Discussing Our White Fragility In this BONUS episode, our producer, Nate, recorded Whitney and Amanda responding to the interview with Samantha in Episode 6. It's a raw response to learning what our ancestors truly did in their efforts to annihilate Native Americans. If you're like us, you haven't stopped thinking about what Samantha said since listening to the episode. If you feel compelled to help, Samantha provided some great ideas in the show notes on episode 6. If you want to donate money, recurring donations make the most impact and the necessary healing takes time. Make sure you support organizations that meet people on their own terms and use culturally sensitive, community-based approaches to mental health treatment. These organizations include Native Wellness Institute, Rising Hearts, Well for Culture, Dream of Wild Health, Frontline Medics, Seeding Sovereignty, and NABCHC. Episode Notes Season 2, Episode 6 – Samantha Native American Children Follow-up This was an amazing episode thanks to Samantha! She is a huge advocate for Native people and had so much to share. Here is what she shared with us in hopes our listeners will take interest. Sorry about the audio glitches! Zoom is never a garuntee. If you have any pointers, we'd grateful appreciate any feedback. By the way, Whitney's Heritage is Sioux Indian (Great, Great Grandmother) List of things listeners can do to help Right now they are trying to overturn the Indian child welfare act, which dictates that native children can only be adopted by native families so as to not take kids away from native families and by proxy forcibly assimilate them. Write to your senators and representatives in support of ICWA. Divest from big banks and switch to a credit union. A lot of big banks fund oil pipelines and pipeline workers are the biggest perpetrators of violence and trafficking of our women, not to mention other kinds of violence against our water protectors. If you have savings, checking, credit card or retirement/investment accounts with any of the following banks, you are unknowingly signing the paychecks of men that traffic our women: (in the US, Canada) Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citibank, TD Bank, Bank of Montreal, Scotiabank, RBC, CIBC, National Bank of Canada, and MUFG (Japan). You can change your accounts over to a credit union, where you have a say in how your money is invested, and you can talk to your investment professional about switching your growth accounts over to green energy investments instead of fossil fuel investments which have a comparable growth rates. (Visit RAN.ORG for more information of the damage of oil pipelines and how it relates to the aftermath of historical trauma against indigenous groups, like boarding schools and forced assimilation, and MMIW.) KNOW WHOSE LAND YOU'RE ON, always always always. Know what traditional lands your home is on, your work, the places you visit, when you travel, consider making monthly donations to these nations to empower them to rebuild—think of it like rent. Visit NATIVE-LAND.CA or download the NATVE LAND app on your phone. IF YOU WANNA TAKE IT A STEP FURTHER—If you own land or property, consider leaving it in trust to the native nation your land sits on. If you have a studio or guest suite on your property, consider housing an indigenous person for free for an allotted amount of time to give them an opportunity to save for a downpayment on their own property. AT THE VERY, VERY LEAST, reach out to local communities and try to make deliveries. Ask what their needs are, and how you can meet them on their terms. Sure they might need money, but they also might just need volunteers for a food drive or organizers for a demonstration—stuff you can do in an afternoon that builds a relationship with these communities. Team up with local organizations that petition to remove native sports mascots. Native mascots are dehumanizing and relegate us to the status of animals forced to fight for sport which in turn desensitizes society at large to our hardships. Look up local native mascots in your region and write to the superintendents of the school requesting their removal and replacement. Along these lines— Don't dress up as sexy natives for Halloween. It might seem innocuous but like mascots, fetishization of our women desensitizes people to the horrific acts of violence our women experience. Our culture is not a costume. We are still here. Watch the words you say. Try not to call meetings “pow-wows”, or say that someone went “off the reservation” the historical context of these phrases are difficult, as at one point it was illegal for natives to leave their reservations and were often shot for trying to escape. Do not ever, EVER, say the word RSKN (which is akin to calling a black person the N word), or SQW (which is a derogatory word for a native woman relegated to the status of a sex slave). MOST IMPORTANTLY—if you witness someone in your privileged circles behaving in these ways, I know its hard, it takes so much courage, but please use your privilege and power to make our voices heard and SPEAK UP. Our lives depend on it. Natives have the highest rate of suicide out of any demographic in the history of the world and the systemic and societal oppression we face developed intentionally over decades. We need brave allies acting consistently to help reconcile that (and most people who do that offensive stuff have no idea the implications of their actions and don't want to cause harm—by speaking up you're helping them not cause harm). If you'd like to donate money, that's awesome, but I might suggest recurring donations since the healing we are trying to achieve takes time. Give to organizations that meet people on their own terms and use culturally sensitive, community based approaches to mental health treatment like: Native Wellness Institute, Rising Hearts, Well for Culture, Dream of Wild Health, Frontline Medics, Seeding Sovereignty, NABCHC, and many of the accounts on the instagram list. Many of us have a very distinct picture in our minds when it comes to your typical runner: Someone who hops out of bed first thing in the morning without hesitation, laces up their sneakers, and covers miles on end without ever running out of breath or breaking a sweat. The reality? Running is an individual practice that looks different for everyone. In this episode, we hear from four trailblazers in the running space who are redefining what it means to be a runner and how nurturing our relationship with the sport is more important than how fast, how far, or how often we run. Fourth generation Lakota runner, Jordan Marie Brings Three White Horses Daniel was born in Kul Wicasa Oyate - Lower Brule, SD. Daniel is highly respected in the running community and beyond for her impeccable work as an advocate in the Indigenous community and beyond. Her exemplary work is acknowledged globally, particularly for her run at the Boston Marathon where she ran for missing and murdered indigenous women. As the founder of Rising Hearts – an Indigenous led grassroots group devoted to elevating Indigenous voices and promoting intersectional collaborate efforts across all movements with the goals of racial, social, climate and economic justice - she is a powerful force to be reckoned with. On this episode, Jordan Marie Daniel and Latoya Shauntay Snell talk about the usage of their platforms to advocate for unique causes in the fitness space. They don't mince their words about the uncomfortable layers that sometimes surface when talking about personal safety in several marginalized communities or the gray areas that present itself as a challenge while passionately advocating about a cause or communities. Latoya inquires about the layers beyond the surface level of Jordan's pursuit of self care: Personal identity outside of running, self discovery in a leadership role and the harmony between talking about injustice while preserving space for joy as an Indigenous person.Support the show (https://ko-fi.com/runningfatchef)

On this episode of Le Run Down I had an incredible conversation with runner and Founder of Rising Hearts, Jordan Marie Daniel. Jordan has always advocated for indigenous peoples, but the 2019 Boston marathon was a huge signal boost for her message. She loves running, and uses the platform it provides to raise awareness, and promote positive change for the indigenous community. Mainstream media has gradually begun to recognize the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit People (MMIWG2S) epidemic across North America, but only after constant attention and pressure from Indigenous communities, advocates, and organization - still, much needs to be addressed as there continues to be serious misrepresentation. In this week’s episode, we speak to advocate and athlete, Jordan Marie Brings Three White Horses Daniel about the tremendous ripple effects of missing relatives, where the media continues to get it wrong, and the crippling economic tolls incurred by families as they are punished during periods of urgency and loss. As a marathon runner, we also speak with Jordan about the act of running and how it can meaningfully move energy in solidarity with the MMIWG2S movement.
