What are inclusive cities? How can we shape our cities to be more inclusive for individuals and organizations? Too often, we take things for granted when designing cities and don't realize how they actually may not work for many of our citizens. Whether it's public transport, green spaces, or even how we decide what to plow first after a snowstorm - there are perspectives we don't consider in our very male-focused, majority group-biased urban planning processes. Today, my guest is Safaa Charafi, an architect, urbanist, and founder of Urban Inclusion. With over 10 years of experience in her field, Safaa shares valuable insights on gender-inclusive urban practices. We talk about why empathy is a pillar in building inclusive cities. Safaa shares how she ended up in this niche field and how our cities fail us - particularly women and marginalized communities. She defines spatial justice and how it is linked to social justice. You'll also learn about some wonderful concepts you may never heard of, such as feminist cities, the right to the city, and even cities for kids To access the episode transcript, please click on the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.com Key Takeaways:Diversity in a decision-making group will bring better solutions to community problems. You can't know what people need if you don't talk to a wide group of people. Diversity is not just a trendy topic. Building a community around diversity requires learning new things and unlearning things we thought we knew.Empathy is not about pleasing everybody, but about factoring their perspective into the decision-making. "Cities need to use empathy and rely more on listening to each other, reflecting the needs and aspirations of their inhabitants. Cities are made for people, but also by people and that's something we tend to forget." — Safaa Charafi Episode References: The Empathy Edge podcast: James Ehrlich: The Neighborhood Of The Future Is HereFeminist City: Reclaiming Space in a Man-Made World by Leslie KernAbout Safaa Charafi: Architect Urbanist, Founder of Urban InclusionSafaa Charafi is an architect and urbanist and the founder of Urban Inclusion, a consulting firm at the intersection of gender, diversity, and urban development. with guest Safaa Shahin for Food for the Hungry InternationalTurn on the news; conflict makes the headlines—civil wars in Syria, strife in Ethiopia, disharmony closer to home, and more. Dispute is layered and complicated and hurts millions of people, and too often our external aid further exhausts those who've suffered enough. So, when conflict arises, how do we help without making things worse?Safaa Shahin, originally from Syria and currently acting as Food for the Hungry's Global Risk Resilience Lead, shares how conflict zones are especially fragile and even the best of intentions can do more harm than good. In order to promote peace and reduce conflict in any situation—in communities around the world or in our own neighbourhoods—we first need the right “lens” to understand each unique context. Safaa's experiences will help you learn to be conflict-sensitive, and become a peacebuilder who helps foster hope.Recommended Resources:Fragility to Resilience - articleOur work of building Resilience at FH - webpageEpisode hosted by Shelaine.

The evidence is clear: effective teacher professional development (TPD) needs to include ongoing and individualized support to teachers in order to impact teachers' instruction, and subsequently student learning. However, what is less clear are the details of what effective coaching looks like in practice, especially in low-and-middle country settings. This episode tries to answer these questions, building on the World Bank's new “Facilitating Effective 1-1 Support Technical Guidance Note." This note provides guidance on how pedagogical leaders can effectively carry out coaching sessions to support teacher learning and improvement. Through implementation tips, case studies, and contextual considerations for policymakers, the note demonstrates how 1-1 coaching can be adapted to a variety of educational contexts. In this episode, Safaa El Tayeb El-Kogali, Practice Manager for South and East Africa at the World Bank, facilitates a dynamic conversation on the opportunities and challenges in utilizing the note's findings as part of government dialogue and implementation of TPD reforms. Safaa is joined by Dr. Philippa Cordingley, Chief Executive of Centre for the Use of Research and Evidence in Education, Dahlia Elhefnawy, Educational Consultant with Egypt's Ministry of Education and Technical Education, and Gabrielle Arenge, Doctoral Researcher at the University of Cambridge and co-author of the guidance note. Surpresa! Religion is not monolithic. Not for that matter is religious reform. There's liberalism, pluralism, renewalism and more. Clarion's Shireen Qudosi asks Reformer Mag editor Rushd as-Safaa to deconstruct the issue as they discuss how to draw traditional Muslims into the picture. What comes first, renewal or reform? Rushd as-Safaa is a Muslim pluralist and a former academic with a background in intellectual history. He is now an editor at Reformer Mag, a publication on Medium that features long-form articles on current affairs, social issues, and policy. Clarion's Shireen Qudosi hears about Rushd's work and the pair discuss renewal versus reform. Rushd's Twitter handle is https://twitter.com/RushdasSafaa
Girl Power isn’t just an American thing. It is catching on all over… even with terrorists! The first of an all female terror cell was just convicted of a plot to attack the British Museum with guns and grenades. Safaa Boular, 18, of London, was just convicted at the Old Bailey of two offenses of preparation of terrorism acts and an earlier attempt to travel to Syria for terrorism. She is Britain’s youngest convicted female Islamic State terrorist. To say she comes from a very dysfunctional family is an understatement. Safaa began thinking about becoming a terrorist when she was 14 and her newly-divorced mother began radicalizing her. Her journey towards enacting a terrorist act of her own was accelerated by the 2015 Paris attacks that obsessed her, and falling in love with an ISIS fighter in Syria, Naweed Hussain, who she married over the internet. After Safaa was arrested, she continued plotting by phone with her sister, Rizlaine and mother, Mina Dich, using Alice in Wonderland coded language. Her sister, Rizlaine, was the Mad Hatter and an attack was a ’tea party'. Rizlaine and their mother bought knives and a backpack and carried out reconnaissance of major landmarks in Westminster. They were arrested just as they were about to commit a knife attack, and now sit in jail. The story has even more dysfunction, twists and turns.
Safaa and Greg discuss what makes good animated tv for kids and parents alike. The hosts give their top 3 kids programs and try to figure out what they all have in common.
The topic is anime that have been made into live-action movies. Greg and Safaa discuss why the live-action versions sometimes fall short of the animated films. We veer off into discussions of white-washing and the great potential of all-Asian casts. If you'd like to send an email, we'd love to hear your comments or take suggestions about topics. My Friend Linda podcast - episode 2: Greg and Safaa speculate on why Stranger Things has risen in popularity since the first season (hint: steve's hair). They also go into topics such as free-range childhood, how the early 80s were actually the 70s, and how Buzzfeed quizzes can tell you everything you need to know about who you really are.
Those African Chicks - Exploring Identities of African Women
Today’s guest is Safaa Peregrino- Brimah , a Nigerian-Ghanaian woman who lives with Sickle Cell. What I particularly enjoyed about this episode outside of the education piece is this young’s woman drive to live a life with intention. We talked about everything from the social stigma’s of being a “sickler”, accesses, emotional stress this illness brings on family and of course Sex. My biggest take away from my conversation with Safaa is that YOU determine the fullness of the life you live and not the card you have been dealt. If only we could all be this courageous. Please find the details to the event she talks about below and make sure you find her at the event, also follow her on her social media handles listed below.
