For this episode of the DCF Show podcast, Data Center Frontier Editor in Chief Matt Vincent and Senior Editor David Chernicoff speak with Tom Dakich, CEO of Quantum Corridor, about compute possibilities for his company's super-fast, super-secure fiber-optic network operating in the area of Chicagoland and Northern Indiana. Almost exactly a year ago, Quantum Corridor launched what the company bills as "one of the fastest, most secure fiber-optic networks in the Western Hemisphere" with its first transmissions from the Chicago ORD 10 Data Center at 350 E. Cermak Rd. to a data center in Hammond, Indiana.  Formed in 2021 as a public-private partnership with the state of Indiana, Quantum Corridor was established to enable advanced Illinois and Indiana tech innovators to exchange data nearly instantaneously, the better to achieve frontline technology breakthroughs.  Funded through a $4.0 million grant from the state of Indiana's READI grant program and with the cooperation of the Indiana Department of Transportation and Northwest Indiana Forum, Quantum Corridor's network is utilizing 263 miles of new and existing fiber-optic cable beneath the Indiana Toll Road to link data centers, quantum research facilities, life sciences and genome scientists and hyperscalers with industry-shattering speeds and throughput. Transmitting at data speeds reportedly 1,000x faster than traditional networks, on its launch in 2023, Quantum Corridor said the new network aims to enable regional businesses and institutions to achieve breakthroughs in the segments for defense, financial modeling, biotech, cybersecurity, machine learning, research and more. This optimism came on the heels of the Biden-Harris administration's designation last October of of the Chicago MSA as a U.S. Regional Technology and Innovation Hub. With its first transmissions, Quantum Corridor achieved a latency of 0.266 milliseconds of information exchange over its current 12-mile network—a transmission speed 500 times faster than the blink of an eye and far exceeding the average network's existing 12-times-longer latency.  The combination of near-instantaneous transmissions paired with massive throughput is expected to enable exponential breakthroughs in modeling and problem solving across myriad industries. Quantum Corridor continues to expand its mileage and connect research facilities. According to the company, the network already has the capacity to transmit nearly the entire current content load of the internet in a single transmission.

Here are my sources and resources for my trip a few weeks ago to Namibia and South Africa. I am also including a link to an organization dedicated to conserving and protecting the white rhino in Namibia. The Rhino Momma Project saves rhinos by trimming their horns to avoid poaching. The horns grow back in five years, and the animals are never hurt, but it takes a team of specialists to do this. Please feel free to donate to this organization. And, the most grateful thanks to my friends Suzette and Ben Bussey, who invited me to share their love of Africa with them, and planned a wonderful trip filled with unique experiences. I was also very impressed with: Patrick Mavros's line of silver accessories. Beautiful tabletop objects, silver jewelry, and the best-looking belt buckles. From his cowboy boots to his tall stature, Governor Eric Holcomb is a presence. You've likely heard him, though not like this. How did Indiana's leader come to be? He joins us today to tell his story, to dive into his sense of urgency headed into the final 12 months of his administration and to talk about, of course, agbioscience. More specifically, its critical role in securing Indiana's economy of the future.  Indiana has evolved rapidly under his leadership and Holcomb has established a new approach to economic development – from the READI program and the LEAP concept just north west of Indianapolis, to name a few. How do these assets shape our future? Holcomb talks about being ready for what's coming and making sure we've not put our eggs in one industry basket. He also talks leadership, having a plan and being ready to keep eyes and ears open to adapt to the moment.  Heading into the fourth turn (a little IndyCar reference), where is Holcomb focused? This is our time, he says, and carpe diem. And because we like basketball in Indiana – it's time to step up to the line, block out the boos and knock down those important shots to make great things happen.

Indiana authorities have identified an Indianapolis man who vanished in 1993 as the ninth presumed victim of a long-deceased businessman suspected in a string of killings in the 1980s and 1990s, a coroner said Tuesday.  A bone that was recovered in 1996 on Herbert Baumeister's Indianapolis-area property was identified through forensic genetic genealogy testing as remains of Allen Livingston thanks to a DNA swab sample his mother provided, Hamilton County Coroner Jeff Jellison said.  Indiana University and Purdue University will examine the effectiveness of the state's Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative, or READI, grant program.  The study comes as the state is moving forward with its second round of READI grant funding.  Some local organizations received more money to help them address the root causes of violence after a fourth round of funding through the Elevation Grants was announced this week.  The program aims to reduce violence by funding grassroots groups. It was renamed last year.  This round of Elevation Grants provides more than $12 million in funding to 72 organizations. It reaches more neighborhoods and aims to empower young people, build resilience and support those who have been justice-involved.  Care farms are agricultural places for people with physical or mental health challenges to process their emotions, while performing farming tasks and working with animals. It's a popular concept in Europe that hasn't gained as much traction in the United States yet. But a new national network hopes to change that. Scott gets into his vision for the company and the rewarding feeling of connection consumers to nutrition.    About Anu Anu™ is a health and wellness brand that empowers consumers to grow Pure Produce® within the convenience of their homes through their proprietary Rotary Aeroponics® technologies.  This 'Nespresso for plants' business model supplies consumers with recurring seed pod subscriptions to sustainably grow Pure Produce that has superior flavor, nutrition, and food safety.  Anu was founded by former Purdue University NASA research engineers, and is now commercializing these technologies funded by the Purdue University Research Foundation Venture Capital Fund, the NSF (National Science Foundation) to develop computer vision AI algorithms, and State of Indiana Manufacturing Grants accelerating their seed pod mass manufacturing capabilities to support commercial partnerships.

In this episode Rich Czyz and I talk about getting creative with professional learning opportunities, how to make professional learning not be too much on teacher's plates, and most importantly how to be a Rogue Leader in your district. Rich is amazing and I am so proud of all that we discuss to keep education fun and meaningful. Rich's insight to professional learning is second to none. This is an amazing listen.   Rich Czyz is an author, educator, and speaker. He started his career as a fifth grade teacher, has served as a Basic Skills teacher, instructional coach, elementary supervisor and Director of Curriculum & Instruction. Rich is currently the Proud Principal of the Yardville Elementary School in NJ and Co-Founder of FourOClockFaculty.com, as well as author of several books including The Four O'Clock Faculty, The Secret Sauce, and his newest book, ROGUE Leader: Make the Rules, Inspire Others, and Take Control of Your Own Professional Development Destiny. Rich is passionate about engaging all stakeholders in meaningful and relevant learning opportunities.   About Rich's new book, Rogue Leader, Make the Rules, Inspire Others and Take Control of Your Own Professional Development Destiny: Known and dreaded by most educators, professional development is often viewed as one more item to tick off the list of obligations that's not necessarily useful or meaningful to teachers. But it doesn't have to be that way! As Czyz argues, “pursuing learning and professional development is the single most important action we can take to hone our craft as educators.” In Rogue Leader, Czyz offers the READI method (relevance, embeddedness, alignment, design, and impact) to assess and improve PD programs. He also offers smart principles and practical advice to jumpstart the practice of professional learning at your institution, building on the ideas introduced in his revolutionary Four O'Clock Faculty. Prepare to go ROGUE! Mentioned in this episode: Rich's book: Rogue Leader: Make the Rules, Inspire Others, and Take Control of Your Own Professional Development Destiny Rich's website: https://fouroclockfaculty.com/ One of the most influential books Rich has ever read: Creative Trespassing by Tania Katan, about people stuck in non creative jobs and how to get creative. ------------------------------------------------------------ If you like what you've heard, please share-out with our friends on social media and tag me. Discussing the rising violence is Susan Lee, chief of strategy and policy at Chicago CRED – an anti-gun violence organization. CRED works with men at risk – of being shooting victims or becoming a shooter themselves. It connects them with cognitive behavioral therapy, life coaching and job opportunities, conducts street outreach to defuse conflict and broker peace agreements between rivals, and advocates for more funding for programs like theirs. Preliminary studies suggest CRED and similar organizations, like READI and Communities Partnering for Peace, are working. A Northwestern University analysis of CRED's impact starting in 2019 shows program participants were potentially 50% less likely to be shot and and 48% less likely to be arrested. That work is, again, preliminary, but in a span of crime like Chicago's experienced recently, it's worth doubling down on, Lee argues. A.D. Quig talked with Lee on Dec. 13 not only about her work at CRED, but also her brief time as Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot's deputy mayor for public safety. Lee left after a little over a year amid a rash of other high-profile exits in the city's public safety space, and has since been critical of the city's response to the spike in homicides and shootings. Lee talks about what she believes is driving that surge, how it compares with – and outstrips – other big cities, and what a shallow bench of public safety policymakers means, long term. Lee also discusses why she believes 2022 is a turning point year, as the city invests tens of millions in anti-violence efforts.
