A single radio station can explain an entire era if you listen closely enough. We rewind to WLIR 92.7 and the Screamer of the Week, when DJs pitched their favorite new songs and listeners called in to vote, turning early 1980s rock radio into a hands-on discovery engine. That lens lets us hear 1981 the way it actually felt: unpredictable, genre-blurring, and way ahead of the mainstream curve. We jump from The Tubes' “Talk To Ya Later” to the behind-the-scenes web that connects Vince Welnick, the Grateful Dead, and Steve Lukather's instantly recognizable guitar work. From there, we track the early MTV effect and why music video exposure changed record sales, then land on deep-cut details around PhD and Squeeze's “Tempted,” including the kind of production and guest-vocal surprises you'd never catch without liner notes and obsessive re-listening. We also dig into the UK approach to singles versus the American “greatest hits” mindset, which helps explain how some songs live outside the album cycle. Stevie Nicks' “Edge of Seventeen” brings in influence, misheard words, and that Police-inspired guitar feel, and Duran Duran's “Girls On Film” turns into a mini history of censorship, nightclub cuts, and what MTV could and couldn't show. Along the way we veer into peak real-life tangents: a legendary misheard-lyrics moment, a tabloid Brooklyn Bridge headline, a dog casually attending Rush at Madison Square Garden, plus a quick “Minute with Jimmy” review of the Strokes' new album Reality Awaits. If you love alternative rock history, 1980s music stories, and the weird little facts that make songs stick, hit play. Learn Something New orRemember Something OldPlease like and follow the Music in My Shoes Facebook and Instagram pagesReach out to us at musicinmyshoes@gmail.comSend us a one-way message. The New Discourses Podcast with James Lindsay, Ep. 217 A very relatable feeling today is that of having something incredibly important to say while nobody listens. We go on screaming about the nearly existential horror of the situation we are in while everyday life goes on beside us, ignoring us, denying us. It's incredibly frustrating. This now far-too-familiar circumstance was written about eloquently at a time when it mattered as much as it may ever have mattered, in January 1944. In that month, Arthur Koestler, writing in the New York Times, published a monumental essay titled, "The Nightmare that Is Reality," (https://www.nytimes.com/1944/01/09/archives/the-nightmare-that-is-a-reality-the-grim-stories-of-nazi-atrocities.html) describing the madness of screaming the truth about the unfolding Holocaust in Germany. In this episode of the New Discourses Podcast, host James Lindsay shares Koestler's landmark essay with you in full and then explores the unsettling question it raises: with so many "screamers," which ones, like Koestler, are crucially right, and which ones are cranks and fools, if not worse? How can we tell them apart? Join him for an important exploration. Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 629 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Oh, it's just another Tube Screamer, and do vintage parts make a difference or do we just want to believe in magic?Blake opens up with a traffic report before the guys jump into a most luciferous episode about pedal schematic similarities. The guys somehow manage a full ten minutes on nothing but pedals and schematics before anyone checks they're on the right podcast. Brian explains how one humble skeleton - your 808, your OD-1, your DOD 250 - can be filtered into a fuzz, a distortion or very nearly anything in the dirt realm, while Richard tinkers with pedal number two for Oliver FX. This leads straight to the vintage-versus-modern-components hill Richard is prepared to die on, well maybe, a cautionary tale about the '69(ish) fuzz face he sold for peanuts, and exactly why germanium is still a nightmare to build with. It was Blake's birthday, which somehow means two boxes of Katz's pastrami, a proposed rebrand to Chasing Food, and a heartfelt happy birthday from Brian that lands with the opposite of the intended effect. Trigger warning - he does a Marilyn Monroe impersonation. The D'Addario AI saga finally gets a verdict, Richard coins the snark reflex, and NAM turns up everywhere...Random string packs, the great vinyl-versus-CD debate, desk maxing, a fill-it-yourself color-changing guitar, and one very unlucky arrested guitarist...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Courses and DIY mods:https://www.bluesguitarmethod.comhttps://www.betterguitartone.comhttps://www.wamplerdiy.comhttps://www.guitarpedalcourse.comCheck out Oliver Effects:https://oliverfx.co.ukYoutube:https://www.youtube.com/@chasingtonepodcastFind us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Support the show

About Wayne: Wayne is the Author of the Vampyre Tales Series. He began writing when he was in grade school because he found it relaxed him, and helped him to “escape” the real world. As time went on, he was given the opportunity to teach a drama class at a local high school, to which he accepted and focused on the importance of stage presence and character building. This later led to a request that would change everything for him. He was asked to create a “believable” Vampire character, and not only did he comply, but his character went on to become his personal persona that would later thrive as the main character of the Vampyre Tales. His books have been taking vampire fans on a journey of their own, leaving a trail of rave reviews and one award thus far, and it's only the beginning. He was also the “head vampire” for one of Canada‘s largest theme parks, for the Halloween season several years running which attracted the attention of other organizations. He was hired as a consultant, to build their theatrical haunted houses for the and Screamers in Ottawa Ontario Canada, operated by the Kiwanis was the first, then went on to become a well-known Halloween hotspot . Being non for profit, other Kiwanis divisions throughout the country have since based their Halloween haunts on the Ottawa location, and the creativity behind the origins, have come from Wayne Mallows. Wayne owned a haunted Gothic Revival Manor House for over a decade, and is no Stranger to the Paranormal He has also appeared on paranormal television, with a few honourable mentions being Paranormal Survivor S3, Paranormal Night Shift, There's No Such Thing as Ghosts, Much Music, and more. During that time, Kira recorded three albums, three EPs, and toured relentlessly with Black Flag. Simultaneously she was also busy studying for a degree in applied engineering from UCLA. Kira also recorded several albums under the name DOS with her then husband Mike Watt from The Minutemen. But that's not the end of it. Kira has also had a very successful career in film—winning an Oscar in sound editing for Mad Max: Fury Road. She's also won two Emmy awards for her work on the John Adams miniseries and for Game of Thrones. Kira is about to release her second solo album “Enigma” on July 10th.
