“It is important to have faith when you're making something,” says Florence Shaw, frontwoman for U.K. post-punk band Dry Cleaning, regarding the hyper-specificity of her lyrics and how they can still feel very relatable, even when she's referencing something unfamiliar. (This, by the way, is one of my favorite things about Dry Cleaning's music.) “You don't have to dumb everything down and you don't have to explain absolutely everything to the audience,” she continues. “I do feel like people will pick things up. I feel like people get it still, and that's a satisfying thing. You have to believe in the perceptiveness of the audience.” As you'll hear episode 134 of the LSQ podcast, the band — Flo, guitarist Tom Dowse, drummer Nick Buxton and bassist Lewis Maynard — have more to say about the idea of faith in the audience and also faith in each each other as bandmates. We also talk more about Secret Love, their brilliant third LP (and I think their best to-date), and we zoom out to discuss their creative histories individually and how they came together as Dry Cleaning. Get tickets for their upcoming tour here.
On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got two women whose singing styles are similar in that they're both absolutely singular, unmistakable, and wonderfully out of step—just don't call it spoken-word. It's Florence Shaw of Dry Cleaning and Sue Tompkins of Life Without Buildings. As you'll hear in this chat, Dry Cleaning sort of fell together in London around 2017, when the three instrumentalists approached their friend Florence Shaw to add some vocals to the music they had been writing. It turned out that Shaw's approach—speaking dense, clearly crafted but never obvious words—slotted in perfectly with the sort of nervous-yet-precise songs they had been working on. By 2020, Dry Cleaning had signed with the venerated 4AD label and the next year released a debut album, New Long Leg, that earned comparisons to post-punk greats like Siouxsie and Sonic Youth. For their third studio album, Secret Love, Dry Cleaning worked with producer-slash-musician Cate Le Bon, and they stretched out a bit, mellowing the sharp corners a bit while Shaw experiments more with vocal melody than before. Check out “Cruise Ship Designer” from Secret Love right here. Another person that eagle-eared listeners have compared Florence Shaw to is Sue Tompkins of the legendary, kinda-lost Scottish band Life Without Buildings. Life Without Buildings only released one album, Any Other City, in their brief three-year run, but it had a focused impact. Shaw remembers hearing the record as a teen. “It blew my mind that you could free yourself from the pressure of making traditional sense in lyrics,” she told the website Hearing Things, before mentioning that she'd love to meet Tompkins one day and thank her. Well, with some recent activity on the Life Without Buildings front—Tompkins contributed vocals to a new Sleaford Mods song, and the band just announced a couple of reunion shows—it seemed like the perfect time to get them together. In this delightful chat, Tompkins and Shaw talk about the similar origins of their respective bands, how genuinely kind the dudes of Sleaford Mods are, and their understandable reticence about the term “spoken word.” They also chatted a bunch about the TV shows Dragons' Den and Eastenders, but we had to trim that in the interest of time. Trust me, it was great. Enjoy. Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast, and thanks to Sue Tompkins and Florence Shaw for chatting. What happens if Roz and Mocha secretly fall in love on the show — would they have to hide it, and how jealous would Maurie get? Plus, should you tell your partner when someone flirts with you, Roz shares his favourite and least favourite parts of growing up in Acton, and we debate whether you call out someone who leaves the washroom without washing their hands. We also get into the pain of blowing a kiss to the wrong person and the ultimate bread‑slice controversy: do you eat the ends of the loaf?
Ep. 179. In this episode, I sit down with renowned playwright and theatre innovator Stan Lai for a rich conversation about his extraordinary journey in theatre, his philosophy on creativity, and the cultural forces that shape artistic expression. We explore how his experiences shaped his voice as a playwright and director, and how improvisation became a breakthrough in his early work.Stan shares insights from his book CreativitRy, expanding on his ideas about making space for inspiration by clearing mental clutter and using constraints as catalysts for creativity. He walks me through his Wisdom-Method triangle, a practical framework for unlocking creative energy, and we discuss the habits required to de-label ourselves and unlearn limiting beliefs like perfectionism. Finally, we explore the story behind the Wuzhen Theatre Festival and its role in fostering global cultural connections, nurturing new talent, and building artistic community. Throughout our conversation, we reflect on how Chinese culture informs universal themes in playwriting and how festivals and cultural exchange programs help shape the future of theatre.BioStan Lai has been called ‘the major contemporary Asian playwright of his time, perhaps of all time' (Robert Brustein), ‘the best Chinese-language playwright and director in the world' (BBC), and ‘Asia's top theatre director' (Asiaweek). Born in the US and raised in America and Taiwan, Lai earned a PhD from UC Berkeley before launching a groundbreaking career in Taiwan. His 40+ plays are celebrated across the Chinese-speaking world, including masterpieces such as A Dream Like a Dream and Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land. He is the co-founder of the Wuzhen Theatre Festival and Huichang Theatre Village in China. Theatre Above in Shanghai is a venue dedicated to his works.Check out Stan's Book

This week we're talking to UK band Dry Cleaning who just released their excellent third album Secret Love via 4AD. We've got all four members with us: vocalist Florence Shaw, guitarist Tom Dowse, bassist Lewis Maynard, and drummer Nick Buxton. We talked about making the album with producer Cate Le Bon and recording at Wilco's Loft Studio in Chicago and at Black Box studios in France's Loire Valley. Florence tells us about her decision to sing more on Secret Love, and other topics of discussion include: their upcoming North American tour that had to be rescheduled, the Grammy-winning but polarizing artwork for 2022's Stumpwork and the uncanny artwork of the new album, and their first visit to the US which happened days before covid lockdown in 2020. Plus: a surprising amount of talk about food, albums they think everyone should own, and things devolve into chaos when Lewis accidentally knocks his laptop off his coffee table. It's one of a few wild moments that make this episode extra fun. -- Credits: Hosted & produced by Bill Pearis Mixed and mastered by Nick Gray Theme music by Michael Silverstein

La seconde partie de RTL2 Pop-Rock Station se fait plus apaisée, avec Queens Of The Stone Age, Air, Tom Petty ou The Cure. La recommandation de Francis Zégut est signée Fast Money Music.

Why do so many high-achieving women have success in every area… except love?
Ever since the 1870s, rumours have swirled around Queen Victoria and her Highland servant John Brown. Were the pair in love? Could they have got married? And might they even have had a secret child? Historian Fern Riddell investigates these claims in her book Victoria's Secret, and has made some dramatic discoveries that she believes cast the story in a new light. Speaking to Ellie Cawthorne, she outlines her findings. (Ad) Fern Riddell is the author of Victoria's Secret: The Private Passion of a Queen/ (Ebury, 2025). In 1939, Robert Moses sprung his latest project upon the world -- the Brooklyn-Battery Bridge, connecting the tip of Manhattan to the Brooklyn waterfront, slicing through New York Harbor just to the north of Governor's Island. To build it, Moses dictated that the historic Battery Park would need to be redesigned. And its star attraction the New York Aquarium would have to be demolished. The aquarium was housed in the former military fort Castle Clinton which had seen so much of New York City's history pass through its walls under the name Castle Garden -- first as an early 19th century entertainment venue and later as the Emigrant Landing Depot, which processed millions of newly arriving immigrants. This valuable link to American history would surely have been lost if not for activists like Albert S. Bard, a revolutionary landmarking advocate who countered and disrupted Moses every step of the way.In this episode, Greg interviews another landmarking superstar -- author and civic activist Anthony C. Wood -- on the occasion of his new biography of Bard titled Servant of Beauty: Landmarks, Secret Love, and the Unimagined Life of an Unsung New York Hero.In his research, Wood discovered a personality far more interesting than his public persona and a man with far more at stake than just his beliefs in preservation.Visit the website for more information and images of things discussed on this show.
