Happy Full House Friday Everyone, Angela Bowen here, the host of Oh Mylanta Holy Chalupas: An Unofficial Full House Fuller House Podcast. Today, I conclude the SISTERS Double Feature PART 2 with Full House S5E14: Sisters in Crime, which aired on December 17, 1991. In this episode While the guys are at a hockey game, DJ is in charge, but when a hunky guy comes over and asks DJ to the movies, she agrees. Then she realizes that she has to take the girls. At the movies Stephanie spends all of her money at the concession stand, leaving DJ with no money for the tickets. So she asks Kimmy to sneak them in (Kimmy works there). The manager of the movie theater catches them and DJ has to cut the date short. Then she has to teach her sisters to lie so that she doesn't get caught. I really enjoyed this episode. Now, this Steve 1.0 we get(Scott Weinger's first appearance as Steve, only it's Steve Peters not Steve Hale, that comes in Season 6), I was not a fan of this version of Steve he just comes off as unlikeable, nothing like the heart of gold version we all know and love from Season 6-7 and Fuller House Season 1-5). It's interesting watching this episode this time around now that I work at a movie theater. I should have tried to figure how much money was spent on concessions by Stephanie and Michelle in 1991 vs. 2022. I'd say probably over $50 was spent on popcorn, drinks and snacks by 2022 costs. By 1991 costs, I'd say maybe $20 give or take and that's not including the tickets. Becky's Aunt Ida is getting spoiled by seeing the twins twice in two back to back episodes. That's probably twice more than Becky or Jesse parents. I bet anything you know Ida is bragging to Becky's mom about that. I mean this is the same woman who bought Becky the book, Wise Women, Foolish Choices (as a wedding gift). It's clear that none of Becky's family likes Jesse at all, even her cousin in Season 6 says (we all expected Rebecca to do better). I wish we could have see the charity hockey game with Danny, Joey and Jesse that would have been fun to watch. I mean Jesse constantly falling down because he can't skate (we see this in Season 6 Nice Guys Finish First), now seeing Danny on his hands and knees cleaning the slush around the goal crease since he's the goalie as pucks just slide past him into the net, I would have laughed at that. DJ got on my nerves with how selfish she was, doing whatever she had to do in order to go on her date with Steve, including pulling Stephanie away from her homework and taking a sick kid out of the house (to a movie theater no less, so many people especially kids to catch her cold). Then she has them lie on top of it so she won't get in trouble. Join me next week when we celebrate John Stamos's birthday with Full House S7E8: Another Opening, Another No Show, which aired on November 2, 1993. In this episode The Smash Club is about to open, but everything that can go wrong does: Joey books the wrong band, Kimmy gives her waitress uniform a "creative" touch, and no one can find the owner, Jesse. I hope you enjoy the episode and have a great weekend! To EMAIL The Podcast GO TO: omhcfhfhpodcast@gmail.com

Turning Readers Into Writers
103 - How to become an independent author with Helen Starbuck

Turning Readers Into Writers

Helen Starbuck started writing in her teens and even submitted a manuscript to Harlequin! After a career as a developmental editor in academic nursing, Helen found the time to work on her own stories when she retired. She rediscovered the beginnings of a manuscript and decided to work on it and see where it led. She liked the premise so much that she finished draft then hired an editor to help her revise and finesse it.After six months of editing, Helen Starbuck published the book through a hybrid publisher and was delighted when the book, The Mad Hatter's Son, won a National Indie Excellence Award.I asked Helen what the most challenging aspect of writing is for her and she told me it's writing the middle of her first draft. I think we can all relate to that! She's not big on outlining and as such has to work hard on keeping her characters from taking a turn she didn't expect, or her storyline diverging down a new route.Helen writes mysteries and romantic suspense, and I ask her about the differences and similarities between the structure of the two genres. When I asked how she decides which genre or series to work in next, Helen told me it is very much based upon her creative energy at the time.If she is struggling to write the next in series for her romantic suspense, she will move onto a mystery story. This gives her the opportunity to move past any writer's block.  Writing, she says, should be joyful, not a slog.Helen's stories are set in Colorado because it's where she grew up and the place she knows best. The towns in her novels may be fictional, but they are based on places that she knows, and she feels that this gives her books an extra element of authenticity.Towards the end of our conversation, we discuss Helen's decision to become an independent author rather than pursue the traditional space and we also talk about the research she does for her mystery novels. She cites Writer's Police Academy as being a mine of information and community, and Sisters In Crime, who recently hosted a talk called Burned, Drowned, and Eaten.I think you can guess the substance of that talk!We finish our conversation with Helen telling me about her current work in progress and where you can find her books.Links:https://www.helenstarbuck.com/Amazon Book StoreTana FrenchCraig JohnsonMichael ConnellyTami HoagSandra BrownWelcome to a new era in self publishing! | My Word PublishingWriters' Police AcademySisters in CrimeBBC One - Expert WitnessConnect with Helen:Helen Starbuck—author Book Editing Blueprint A Step-By-Step Plan To Making Your Novels Publishable Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Dressed in pajamas covered with stars, the little girl's body is perfectly still, her arms folded neatly over her chest. The wildflowers decorating her hair scatter across the grass in the sharp breeze. Her lips are parted slightly, as if to whisper goodnight for the very last time… When twelve-year-old Holly Mitchell's fragile little body is found on the steps of a mountainside church in the small town of Denton, a doll made from pine cones clasped tightly to her chest, Detective Josie Quinn rushes to attend the scene. She knows this little girl's angelic face, her mother had offered Josie help when she'd needed it most. Searching the girl's house, Josie is devastated to find that Holly's mother is dead too, and her little sister is missing. But why has this family home been stripped of all sharp objects? Re-tracing her steps, Josie finally finds a secret hiding place with Holly's sister inside, terrified, but alive. Moments later, another doll made of twigs turns up. Certain the killer is close by, Josie holds the little girl tight and tries to coax answers from her, but it's clear the pile of burnt photographs and letters found in the greenhouse is her only lead. No one is safe until Josie can figure out the dangerous secret that has escaped this remote family home. Just when Josie is finally closing in on the killer, the unthinkable happens, a tragedy that shakes her to her very core. And on the windshield of her car: a third wooden doll. Could stopping this twisted monster from taking more innocent lives come at the ultimate price for Josie? We had our monthly Living Poetry Poet's Connection meeting on January 9 2021 with special guest Denise Gibbon, Literary Attorney. She talked about copyright and answered several questions related to literary law and poetry protection. From the About section of Denise Gibbons website: "A publishing consultant as well as a licensed attorney in both California and New York, I represent and educate authors about contracts, copyright and other publishing issues. After graduating from the University of San Francisco School of Law over twenty-five years ago, I began my legal career as a litigator in Los Angeles, California, where I worked for two large firms — Crosby, Heafey, Roach & May, and a New York based firm (hold your breath), Wilson, Elser, Moskowitz, Edelman & Dicker. In the course of representing authors in California, I prepared and negotiated publishing contracts for the Los Angeles Chapter of the national mystery writers’ organization, Sisters In Crime, and wrote a legal column dubbed “The Legal Weapon” for the organization’s publication, Ransom Notes. As an attorney in New York, I persuaded a large New York publisher not to categorize my client’s already-published true-life-non-fiction work as fiction, successfully convinced producers of a popular TV tabloid to remove libelous material about a client from a segment prior to its national broadcast date, and persuaded a prominent and reluctant publisher to terminate three publishing contracts with a successful but dissatisfied author. Prior to that, I was a volunteer-attorney for the Author’s Guild, a distinguished national organization that educates writers about their legal rights. There, I reviewed, explained and revised contracts of various kinds for numerous Guild members. There was also life before and between the law gigs. As a reporter for a New York newspaper, I covered local news and interviewed artists such as Janis Ian, Richie Havens, and Cleo Laine for feature articles. In California, as a member of the Los Angeles Poets and Writers Collective, and tutored by the inimitable Jack Grapes, I published and edited poetry with Bombshelter Press and sang for three years with the San Francisco Symphony Chorus under the direction of Seiji Ozawa. Finally, for seventeen years, I had the presence of mind to earn a precarious and rewarding living as a professional singer in San Francisco. And between you and me, I’d do it again." This is a first for It's a Mystery podcast! Award-winning mystery author Kellye Garrett reads to us from a work-in-progress, which is a first for this show. When the publisher of her first two mysteries shuttered their doors, Kellye pivoted and began working on this domestic thriller. You'll hear her read from that book and then we discuss her two Detective By Day books and how they are still impacting readers, the #ownvoices movement, and how writing for the TV show Cold Case helped Kellye when it came to writing fiction. This week's mystery author Kellye Garrett’s Hollywood Homicide, about a semi-famous, mega-broke black actress, won the Anthony, Agatha and Lefty for best first novel. It’s also one of BookBub’s “Top 100 Crime Novels of All Time.” The second, Hollywood Ending, was featured on the TODAY show’s Best Summer Reads of 2019 and was nominated for both Anthony and Lefty awards. Kelly serves on Sisters In Crime's national board, and is cofounder of Crime Writers of Color. Welcome to the show. Kellye. Kellye: Thank you so much for having me, Alexandra. Alexandra: Oh, it's my pleasure. So you're going to read to us today. This is kind of unusual and I'm so excited. You're going to read to us from a work in progress. Do you want to set it up for us? Kellye: Sure. It's a bit more serious than my other books, but it's a stand alone. It's like a Lori Raider day or a Megan Miranda type book. Still very much about a woman, first person narrative, looking into a mystery. Alexandra: As we mentioned in your bio, you've got two books in the Detective by Day series. Tell us why you've switched to do this book about different characters. Kellye: For two reasons. First, my publisher closed, Midnight Ink, before my third book came out. And they still have the rights for the first two. So, for right now I can't write any more of those books. And although I've always loved cozies, I started reading a lot more domestic suspense, domestic thriller type books, like I was saying, Megan Miranda, Lloyd Raider Day. I really fell in love with the genre. But one thing I realized that there aren't really any Black women in those books. And I think there's certain reasons why. And so I wanted to write a book like that, but how Black woman would have it happen to her. Alexandra: That brings me to my next question then. Tell us about the hashtag #ownvoices movement. I don't know anything about it. I did a little bit of research when I was preparing for our interview. Why don't you tell us about it? Kellye: Sure. A few years ago, maybe like five or six, there was a big push, especially in for stories of more diverse, main characters. And, what happened is a lot of straight CIS white people started writing books with more diverse, main characters, which is a great, nothing wrong with that. But what happens is that they would sell the book, their book and then went to an actual person who was of that group tried to sell it they were told we already have a book like that. So the idea of #ownvoices - people of their own culture, writing about their culture - grew out of that.

She lives in Chicago, where she is co-chair of the mystery readers' conference Murder and Mayhem in Chicago and the national president of Sisters in Crime. "The Lucky One": From the author of the Edgar Award®-nominated Under A Dark Sky comes an unforgettable, chilling novel about a young woman who recognizes the man who kidnapped her as a child, setting off a search for justice, and into danger. Most people who go missing are never found. But Alice was the lucky one... As a child, Alice was stolen from her backyard in a tiny Indiana community, but against the odds, her policeman father tracked her down within twenty-four hours and rescued her from harm. In the aftermath of the crime, her family decided to move to Chicago and close the door on that horrible day. Yet Alice hasn't forgotten. She devotes her spare time volunteering for a website called The Doe Pages scrolling through pages upon pages of unidentified people, searching for clues that could help reunite families with their missing loved ones. When a face appears on Alice's screen that she recognizes, she's stunned to realize it's the same man who kidnapped her decades ago. The post is deleted as quickly as it appeared, leaving Alice with more questions than answers. Embarking on a search for the truth, she enlists the help of friends from The Doe Pages to connect the dots and find her kidnapper before he hurts someone else. Then Alice crosses paths with Merrily Cruz, another woman who's been hunting for answers of her own. Together, they begin to unravel a dark, painful web of lies that will change what they thought they knew—and could cost them everything. Twisting and compulsively readable, The Lucky One explores the lies we tell ourselves to feel safe.

Robocop The TV Series RoboCop: The Series is a 1994 Canadian television series based on the RoboCop film series. It stars Richard Eden as the title character. Made to appeal primarily to children and young teenagers, it lacks the graphic violence that was the hallmark of RoboCop (1987) and its sequel RoboCop 2 (1990). The series takes place between the original film and RoboCop 2. The RoboCop character has several non-lethal alternatives to killing criminals, which ensures that certain villains can be recurring. The OCP Chairman and his corporation are treated as simply naïve and ignorant, in contrast to their malicious and immoral behavior from the second film onward. While RoboCop was initially an American property, Orion Pictures received a $500,000 cash infusion for TV licensing rights to Canada's Skyvision Entertainment. This allowed access to co-production treaties and possible partnerships with other countries. The series was filmed in Toronto and Mississauga, Ontario and originally planned for a January 1994 debut, several months after the unsuccessful release of RoboCop 3. Skyvision was also in negotiation with Peter Weller, the original RoboCop, but this did not come to fruition. Twenty-two episodes were made, but the series was not renewed for a second season. The Market is not a quiet place. Thousands of people stroll the streets and sidewalks, chattering and calling to each other... Street musicians sing and play guitars... Vendors proclaim their wares, and customers barter for better prices on beans and broccoli... For one long moment, it all stopped, sucked up by my mother's sharp intake of breath. "Peggy Manning," she said. "I thought you were dead." -- Leslie Budewitz, Killing Thyme I am thrilled to have the opportunity to chat with Leslie Budewitz, whose Spice Shop Mysteries and Food Lovers' Village Mysteries are always on my must-read list.  First things first: check out her website for info on her books, upcoming events, and recipes -- definitely do NOT miss those! In addition, she is on Facebook and on Twitter. Writers out there, she also has an Agatha Award-winning nonfiction book, Books, Crooks and Counselors: How to Write Accurately About Criminal Law And Courtroom Procedure. Just sayin'. Leslie gives a shout-out to some of her favorite books and authors, including Sheila Connolly, who writes the Museum Mystery cozy series, and Cleo Coyle's series, the Coffee House Mysteries, set in Greenwich Village -- recipes abound there as well! Plus talent runs in the family: Leslie's cousin is New York Times Bestselling Author Laura Childs. Leslie and I both recommend Sisters In Crime for both published and yet-to-be-published writers. Leslie is a SinC past president and credits much of her success to being a member of The Guppies, the online chapter of Sisters in Crime.  And finally, here are Leslie's two series, in order: Food Lovers' Village Mysteries 1 - Death Al Dente 2 - Crime Rib 3 - Butter Off Dead Spice Shop Mysteries 1 - Assault and Pepper 2 - Guilty as Cinnamon 3 - Killing Thyme I'm sorry to all the other writers out there, but "Crime Rib" = Best. Title. Ever. Enjoy! - Laura ************************* Transcript of Interview with Leslie Budewitz Laura Brennan: Leslie Budewitz blends her passion for food, great mysteries, and the Northwest in two light-hearted mystery series: the Spice Shop Mysteries, set in Seattle, and the Food Lovers’ Village Mysteries, set in northwest Montana. Her books focus on strong women who share her passions, and have a talent for finding trouble. Leslie, thank you for joining me. Leslie Budewitz: It's a delight. Laura: So, normally, I write my own intros, but yours was so good that I just shamelessly stole it off of your website. It so accurately captures your heroine -- strong women who share your passions. And get into plenty of trouble. I love that so much. Leslie: When passion leads you into trouble, gosh, that's when a great story develops, don't you think? Laura: I do. I absolutely do. So before we talk about them, I want to talk about you. You do not get into trouble. Leslie: Not the same kind of trouble is my characters. Laura: But you are a lawyer. Leslie: Yes. Laura: That's how you started out. Now, is that fun? Leslie: I enjoyed the practice. But I will say that I enjoy killing people on the page more. Laura: So you weren't tempted to write legal thrillers? To use your legal background? Leslie: No, I never really was. I've been practicing law for about 30 -- oh good heavens -- 32 years. Now very part time, doing civil litigation, meaning personal injury work, business litigation and some employment law. And I have had some great experiences, met many wonderful people, met some not so wonderful people as well. Which is great because that gives me fodder for other stories. But I didn't really want to go into the courtroom world in my fiction. I have a lot more interests than just the legal world. And so it's been great fun to explore other things. If there are lawyers in my stories they tend to be herbalists, or retired lawyers who make fudge. People who have found other ways to make a living beyond their practices. Laura: Well, I love that about your books,

Jayne (J. A.) Hitchcock is one of many individuals giving their all in the grass-roots, front-line effort to help children and teens cope with cyber abuse. Jayne heads up Working to Halt Online Abuse (haltabuse.org and haltabuseKTD.org) to give not only advice, but hands-on free assistance to adults, as well as kids. Jayne passes on a steady stream of great tips for cyber citizens via Twitter (@Netcrimes) and is joined by her Siberian Husky (@Cybercrimedog) in visits to schools (and on Twitter!). Dr. J reviews with Jayne her longtime involvement starting with legislation addressing E-mail abuse after being targeted herself, back in 1997. Since then, she has worked continually to help train law enforcement in how to deal effectively and considerately with reports of cybercrime. As J. A. Hitchcock, she has turned her talent as an author to the subject as well. You can read her 2006, second edition, of Net Crimes & Misdemeanors: Outmaneuvering Web Spammers, Stalkers, and Con Artists (with a Foreword by Vint Cerf) and from 2013, True Crime Online: Shocking Stories of Scamming, Stalking, Murder, and Mayhem, which are discussed in our interview. Ms. Hitchcock explains how Phoebe, "The Cyber Crime Dog", has especially enabled discussion with early elementary school students. Problems online and with smart phones have become more of a problem for that age group in recent years, as online safety training has been aimed at older kids and teens for the most part. But Phoebe had developed cataracts, threatening to limit her participation in cybercrime fighting. Jayne and Dr. J discuss what needed to be done and the help Phoebe's supporters can offer to offset the high cost of her eye surgery through www.gofundme.com/v5z4sg Although mass media and social media are great ways to increase awareness and educate the public, one-on-one, face-to-face work such as done by Jayne, and other guests on The Social Network Show, such as Darren and Beth Laur (@crimefighterguy), Rich Guerry (@RichardGuerry) and Carol Todd (@c_todd). Jayne A. Hitchcock is an author and cyber bullying and cyber crime expert. She volunteers with the U.S. DOJ Office for Victims of Crime, the National Center for Victims of Crime, and law enforcement agencies worldwide. She has worked tirelessly with legislators in the drafting and passing of many of this country's Internet laws. As president of WHOA (Working to Halt Online Abuse) at haltabuse.org and WHOA-KTD (Kids/Teens Division) at haltabusektd.org, Jayne continues a mission to educate adults and children in online safety. Jayne conducts law enforcement training for local, county, state, military and federal agencies. Her speaking schedule on cyber crime and cyber bullying includes elementary/middle/high schools, universities and colleges. She also lectures at libraries, conferences, and corporations. She has been featured on Swift Justice, America's Most Wanted, 48 Hours, Good Morning America, Cosmopolitan and TIME magazines, and local, national and international newscasts, and was selected by Lifetime TV as their "Champion For Change." Jayne's eighth book, Net Crimes & Misdemeanors 2nd edition, covers just about anything that can happen online and how to stay safer (netcrimes.net). Jayne's ninth book, True Crime Online: Shocking Stories of Scamming, Stalking, Murder and Mayhem is now available (truecrime-online.com). The Social Network Show welcomes Jayne Hitchcock to the October 10, 2014 episode. Jayne Hitchcock, President of WHOA,  author and cyberbullying/cyber crime expert gives us an update on what is happening in the online world. One trend that has become more prevalent in the last few years is "swatting". Swatting is where an emergency service (like 911) is called upon to respond to an emergency but it is based on a false report. There are reports of teens getting revenge on a winner of an online game by reporting an emergency at the winner's residence. Jayne also shares some very important tips for parents on how to spot if a child is being bullied and how to get help from WHOA. Check out the resources and books listed on Jayne's website, the kids and teens website, and the schooltipline.com website. Jayne A. Hitchcock is an author and cyber bullying and cyber crime expert.
