One of my favorite automation tools is Social Jukebox at https://socialjukebox.com I love it because it's truly a set and forget type of tool. I've setup posts in there 4 years ago that still give me leads. The other tools I use, like Buffer or OnlyWire need to be “fed” to be useful. Why do I love Social Jukebox so much? The main reason I love it is that whatever you setup today, as long as it's evergreen content, will be reshared forever. Cool right? So, is it really a good idea though? Well… Automation is about doing the things you normally need to do using tools so you don't need to do them, right? What does Social Jukebox let you do? With Social Jukebox, you setup a list of posts in a rotating queue. Instead of being a queue of 50 items that would be empty after 50 days if it posted daily, the queue is never empty. Obviously, if you only have 50 items, it might be repetitive, so you'll need more than that, but you get... It can easily be dismissed as trash and full of negative comments, but look below this surface and there is a wealth of value in being active and using the platform. In this episode we’re chatting with Jim Fuhs of Fuhsion Marketing, a full service social media marketing company. Jim is known for his social expertise and personal training to get your rocking on multiple platforms. In this episode we strip it right back and discuss the all the Twiiter fundamentals you need to maximise your influence on this channel. Jim also mentions so, so, so many apps and tools that I’m not even sure if I caught them all for the show notes!!! (Let me know if I haven’t). Watch the episode video: https://youtu.be/f-pf0qpW9Mw Takeaways - Lets cover the first steps again – Get your Bio and your header right. Don’t use a logo, use a picture of yourself (that can be used across multiple platforms) and make sure you utilize your bio and username to add engaging elements such as keywords and hashtags - Have a Hashtag of your own (that people can use, follow or engage with) or use the hashtag of a live event to engage with those there and those that can’t make it! For example Social Media Marketing World used #SMMW20, which Jim was at AND was in the top Tweeters while there. - And finally, Jim’s four E’s to guarantee growth on Twitter that we should all be using right now; - Education - Entertain - Empower people - And last but most importantly Engage (this is what the platform was built on and a fundamental for any success now and in the future) Music Featured on this Podcast: Sleepy in the Garden Lobo Loco www.musikbrause.de Creative Commons License

I am a corporate employee with an entrepreneurial mindset. This is an interesting interview with Tim Fargo, we talk about his initial businesses in Fraud investigation and selling this successfully. His career took an interesting view on startups and other interests. He then changed his career with his new venture which is Social Jukebox which is a business that automates social media. Here are some of the best ways to promote your online community. You have a lot to offer them, but you can’t make the impact you want to make unless you grow your community. In this episode, we shared the best ways we have found to grow your online community. 1. Smart sharing on your social media channels In Episode 46, we interviewed Tim Fargo from Social Jukebox and we talked about evergreen sharing. Having evergreen content on social media really works and Social Jukebox does an amazing job. Start using livestream on your social media platforms to deliver valuable content. It’s a great way to get your content in front of people. Change your profile link (especially in Instagram) for whatever you’re promoting or launching. 2. Create bonus content This gives people a taste of what you’re offering and also helps to grow your email list. Email and chatbots can be helpful in delivering content to people who are interested in it. We have an episode about how to use Chatbots effectively from the founder of ManyChat. 3. Nurture the people already on your email list Todd Giannattasio from The Growth Suite was on Episode 55 talking about building a funnel to grow your community. There’s a lot to learn from him in how grow and nurture your email list. Bundle your content thematically and share them in your drip email sequences to warm up your list and add value. 4. Use testimonials to show value Social proof is incredibly important because people want to see how you got results that they relate to. We talked about this in Episode 48. We went in depth about how to get and use testimonials. Create a Twitter Moment “buzz from others” when other people say something good about you. This is a great way to showcase testimonials and also let the other person know you find their feedback as valuable. There’s nothing better than people saying nice things about you or your services. Social networking is all the rage. Unfortunately, all of those platforms that allow us to share our story can be hard to keep up with. When you want to reach out to customers on more than one platform then it is time to look at these social site management tools. Social Site Management Most of the tools we discuss start with the ability to post content to multiple platforms. While that is highly useful (and time-saving), it is just the beginning. The more advanced tools offer the ability to track responses, view analytics reports, and even manage all your social networking from one location. The List There is a broad range of solutions that fall into this family of applications. Thus, it may help to see a list of products that may fall into this category that we did not cover in the podcast. Here is a link to that list: Big list of possible tools: https://www.capterra.com/social-media-marketing-software/?utf8=%E2%9C%93&review_stars=4&users=&platform%5B1%5D=8&feature%5B1%5D=38280&commit=Filter+Results&sort_options= Buffer: buffer.com - This is a solid solution for anyone that wants to post to more than one or two sites on a regular basis. The $10/month subscription should also be easy to manage in any budget and pays for itself in time saved. Planoly: https://www.planoly.com/ - This Instagram focused solution is well-suited for visual platforms. It may not help a typical blogger, but if you use images and visual stories a lot then this tool will be a better fit than the other text focused tools. There is a free plan or you can bump up starting as low as $7/month. Agora Pulse: Slightly expensive at $39/month: https://www.agorapulse.com/ but it does have a free trial and has some very useful features for marketing and analytics. Meet Edgar: https://meetedgar.com This runs $25/month and is an excellent solution for evergreen content. It makes it easy to repost content and managing recurring touches. Sendible.com $24/month higher end buffer with more outputs and analytics Hoot Suite: https://hootsuite.com/ $29/month Co-schedule: This is more of a calendar and a full social content scheduling tool than just a way to post material. It makes it easy to track mentions and manage relationships. It starts at $40/month but also has a referral option that can reduce your costs to $0 Social Jukebox: https://www.socialjukebox.com/ $19.99 monthly
Business Owner's Freedom Formula | Actionable Advice for Small Business Owners
In 2013, Tim Fargo wanted to promote his new book, Alphabet Success. Using Twitter, he quickly realized his evergreen content scheduling was a time-suck. He thought there had to be a better way. Reaching out to a colleague to build what he needed, Tim quickly had a solution to his problem of automating posts in a deliberate manner. Now, Social Jukebox serves hundreds companies from micro businesses with no staff to personal brands to major companies. Tim understands what it takes to launch a business. His first major success with Omega, an investigation company, started in an extra bedroom. Tim led the company through growth to over 300 employees in just a few years, selling it off for $20 million. Now he’s helping others reach larger audiences through social media marketing automation with his company Social Jukebox. In my interview with Tim, he shares all sorts of valuable business tips based on his massive success, including, why most big ideas suck!
We tend to believe that leaders have all the answers. But the truth is, real leadership is about a willingness to reach out to people with a wide range of knowledge and expertise, solicit feedback, and take the responses to heart. Tim Fargo is an American entrepreneur, author and angel investor. He was the founder and CEO of Omega Insurance Services, a business he sold in 2003 for $20M. In 2013, Tim was using social media to market his book, Alphabet Success, and getting increasingly frustrated with the time it took to schedule evergreen posts. He asked friend and colleague Len Sixt to develop an app for his personal use, and that tool eventually became Tim’s current business, the popular automated social media posting system known as Social Jukebox. Tim sits down with Emerald to explain why you should avoid chasing an ideal and set goals that work for you. He speaks to his decision to walk away from a $20M business, discussing how the company’s growth and advice from peers informed his choices. Tim walks us through the inception of Social Jukebox, describing how his own frustration with posting consistently to promote his book led to the creation of the tool. Listen in for Tim’s insight on creating a support system of people who possess a wide range of knowledge and learn why true leaders seek out feedback—and really listen! What You Will Learn Why you should avoid chasing an ideal and set goals that work for you How Tim fostered the courage to walk away from a $20M business How little Tim’s relationships or lifestyle changed after selling Omega Tim’s view that the people in your life are most important Why Tim prefers the comradery of a smaller organization How Tim’s frustration with posting consistently inspired Social Jukebox The value in repetitive sharing on social media How Tim continues to leverage relationships from a 2003 mastermind Tim’s insight on a leader as someone who reaches out to experts How Tim uses travel as a way to celebrate success Connect with Tim Fargo Social Jukebox Resources Alphabet Success by Tim Fargo Connect with Emerald GreenForest Creative Age Consulting Group Emerald’s Website Emerald on LinkedIn Emerald on Twitter Email: listeners@menonpurposepodcast.com This episode is sponsored by the Creative Age Consulting Group. If you wonder how to promote your evergreen content efficiently, you might want to check out Social Jukebox, a tool that allows you to share your content over and over again on Facebook, LinkedIn or Twitter. In this episode, we talk with Tim Fargo from Social Jukebox. He is a two-time Inc. 500 winner, an entrepreneur, an international speaker and bestselling author and the creator of Social Jukebox. We are paid users of Social Jukebox and use it on a daily basis to promote the Communities That Convert podcast. It may even by why you are here. Tim shares with us some of his best tips and practices to get the most out of your evergreen content.Social Jukebox is an automated content delivery system. So it’s essentially Buffer that just keeps on going, When you get to the end of one of your content databases on Social Jukebox, the content will keep recycling over and over again like an hourglass that just keeps turning over. Question: What is Social Jukebox and why did you create it? Answer: In 2013, I published the book Alphabet Success. I was trying to build an audience to promote the book and found the process of scheduling posts to be mind-numbing things. You could carve your tweet on a granite tablet and send it on horseback to be delivered. The person receiving it on Twitter will have no idea that ever happened so they don’t care how it got there. As a result, I started looking around for a more efficient way to deliver the content. I ended up calling my former head of IT from Omega, that I sold in 2003, and asked him to build a tool to help me deliver my content to the social media sites. I didn’t intend to sell it, but I quickly found people were much more interested in why I was posting 24 hours a day then they were my book. I thought maybe it’s time to abandon the book and try the software business. So here we are. I just shared it with a few people in the beginning and it had a lot of utility. It just didn’t look very nice. So for people that are thinking about starting something, don’t get too hung up on getting it perfect. Just go for “good enough” when you’re getting started. Question: When you started, it only worked with Twitter, but now you have added a few more platforms, correct? Answer: We added the other two biggies in my mind, which are Facebook and LinkedIn, where most people have at least some presence. Almost everybody I think has a favorite go-to platform whether they’re doing a lot of Facebook marketing or whether they’re Twitter-centric. So we added those two platforms and, of course, we continue to look at other platforms to possibly add in the future. Question: What is evergreen content in your mind? Can you give us some examples? Answer: World Cup scores are great to share live or comment on. I have a connection with Sweden because my kids are half Swedish and Sweden’s actually South Korea right now as we are speaking. So that’s a great thing to live tweet because the game is happening now. It’s not a great thing to put in Social Jukebox because in a couple months it’ll be like, yeah we kind of know what happened with that event (Sweden won that match 1-0). Things that make great evergreen content include a social media tip, a great graphic, podcasts, blog posts are very often great, especially if they cover leadership or management. A good example is a plumber that creates videos about how homeowners can take care of jobs that are super easy, like how to tighten the washer onto someone’s sink can then be put in a Jukebox to be shared on Facebook and Twitter to develop a social community. It’s anything that would resonate with your audience on an ongoing basis. Today everyone’s their own media company. Media companies have editorial calendars and you can have an editorial calendar, too. You can create a Jukebox to share seasonal items only at a certain time of year. For instance, you could have content in a Jukebox for Black History Month, if that is something that would resonate with your audience. Question: For people that have not been on the tool yet, can you describe how it works? Answer: Jukeboxes are basically miniature databases of content that post over and over in a random pattern. When people quiz me as to why I chose to do it this way, I tell them that every time I tried to accurately predict the perfect time for the perfect content I was almost universally incorrect. If you have a particular kind of content that you want to share at a certain hour of the day, then that’s great, but don’t get too hung up on it being a specific post. In the Jukeboxes, the content is randomly going, and we also have a calendar for targeted posts where you’ve got a greater level of control. There are actually three different ways to schedule things: Auto-schedule allows you to decide how many times per day you want something to post from each Jukebox. It does it all for you and spaces out the posts. You can set a specific schedule for an entire Jukebox to be used over a specific period of time. You can also visual schedule, which looks like a giant excel spreadsheet. You can move posts around on that for people who want to tweak and get more specific with the time slots. What I recommend for those people is to use auto-schedule to create the massive schedule to start with and then go into the visual schedule and pinpoint different times. Question: What is the effectiveness of the system? Answer: The effectiveness and engagement will depend on the content. If you have a post that’s great, it’s going to get picked up and shared, but if you have a post that sucks, it’s not going to go anywhere. No amount of wizardry is going to make and uninteresting piece of content resonate with people. Think back to the TV shows Friends and Seinfeld. The whole idea was to get eyeballs and once you have those eyeballs, have enough trust generated that those eyeballs will stick around and watch the commercials. There’s lots of different ways to skin a cat and I think driving engagement comes from different ways, right? Some of the ways I have seen work include: Helpful content General interest content Things people find interesting or amusing. Interesting content could be just facts or something that you share that might be relevant to your audience and develop some pickup. Other things could just be pure entertainment. The key is going to be in what does your audience care about. Take the home shopping network, for instance. By my estimation, that whole channel is spam, right? But it’s a business. They don’t exist for no reason. There are people who sit at home and call the place up and order stuff. If they didn’t they go off the air. So it’s all about serving your audience and that’s the key. All that my tool can do is deliver that message to the audience you have. You can automatically add a hashtag to every post in a Jukebox by just adding it once in options instead of adding it to every post in the jukebox, which is much more efficient. But it does always go back to don’t try to put lipstick on a pig. If you don’t have good content you need to focus on fixing that because getting a new tool isn’t going to take you across the goal line. Question: Twitter has new policies in place when it comes to duplicating tweets. Does your tool violate any of these new rules? Can you talk a little bit about the new Twitter policy? Answer: Twitter has had a no duplicate policy since 2009. I don’t want to tempt fate, but the amount of resources that it would require for them to check every post that’s coming on against everything that’s been posted on your account before–you’re talking about a gargantuan amount of overhead. We run an algorithm now to make sure that people aren’t duplicating content too quickly as it goes out because we’re enforcing a 72 hour rule. I’m sure that if I contacted people at Twitter, they’d say it’s absolutely forbidden. But I haven’t heard from anybody that’s having a problem. My impression about these rules and what they were trying to combat is the rise of fake news. Particularly on Twitter where we’d see trends pop up and it was a six word phrase. How does the six word phrase trend? The only way a six word phrase trends is because a bunch of accounts are coordinating the posting. I could add a wrinkle to Social Jukebox where you could update a thousand accounts because you’d have a shared jukebox between all 1000 accounts or 10,000 accounts for 100,000 accounts. There really isn’t an upper limit as long as you have the server resources and you can automatically have that post go out to all those accounts more or less simultaneously. That is something Twitter specifically talked about when they were reaching out. And I’m sure it was the same for everybody that has a posting tool for Twitter. They were very keen to know how you could move content back and forth between accounts, how quickly it could be shared, things like that. So my impression, and I think it’s correct, was they really wanted to find a way to limit people who are trying to make something look as if it was news. And if and if you can have something trend and the articles look newsworthy, people only read the headline and don’t necessarily click on the link but that message becomes the takeaway. I think from Twitter’s perspective, you don’t want to be caught in the middle of this kind of chaos, with people putting out things that are just patently false on your platform.. I’m pretty sure what they were really after was to prevent that kind of thing. And by the way, they don’t like repetitive stuff, so I do think there’s going to be a higher level enforcement where you have to maybe wait, say six or seven hours before you can repeat a post and I’m sure the time table is going to continue to increase. But the idea that you could never share the same post again, I’m not saying never. I said I don’t want to tempt fate, but I don’t see that happening. Question: What makes Social Jukebox standout over similar services on the market? Answer: I like to keep the platform somewhat simple. I think there’s a tendency among almost all software tools to keep adding stuff until you have a product that is so complicated that you need a master’s degree to turn the thing on. It’s great to add features, but at the same time you add overhead to the process, you add complexity to the product, and as a result it very often it becomes intimidating to use it for the simple task that it was made for from the beginning. I’m much more interested in having it be really effective at the things that it’s really meant to do. I’d even include in that having a predictive tool about the best time to tweet is an idiot’s game. All you do is take everyone’s followers and tell them that at 8:00 AM in your area, most of your followers are online. Wow, that’s a real insight. And by the way, it’s not like you’re buying super bowl airtime. You’re adding posts, so why wouldn’t you post around the clock just with the idea that maybe you’ll get a great client from Malaysia? Maybe you’ll find somebody that’s really interested in what you do in New Zealand. Don’t be parochial and think that just because your existing audience is in a certain time zone that you should restrict yourself to that. In the ideal world, you’re not just serving who you’re talking to now. You’re expanding the number of people you’re talking to. At least that would be my key to marketing. I would say really our key is just keep simplifying the tool. I’m not saying take things away, but just try to make it easier and easier to use. If you ever have a support question for Social Jukebox, you get me, there is no support department. If you create a support department, they will do what you’ve mandated them to do. They will give great support on the product. Right? Very rarely are they going to try to figure out a way to eliminate their own job. And the reality is clients don’t want great support. They want a product they understand. And if you keep getting the same questions from customers, don’t figure out a great support answer, figure out a way to redesign the product so that the person doesn’t have a question anymore. That is my mindset. I’m incentivized as the entrepreneur because not only am I the one who’s going to have to ask the questions, but I’m also the person that can affect change. For me that’s a really important distinction, making sure that you’re constantly trying to eliminate the number of questions people might have about something rather than just try to find great ways to answer those questions. Back in July of 2013, I started using Twitter to try to help sell my book, Alphabet Success (a story about success built around my last business). In an effort to keep things interesting, I scheduled a fair number of tweets. One thing became clear very quickly: scheduling tweets took an incredible amount of time. Much of what I was tweeting was “evergreen” and wouldn't change much over time, so I ended up scheduling things repeatedly over the course of a month. However, it had to be done, and it was better than sitting in front of the computer doing it live. But the thought stuck in my mind: “There's got to be a better way.” Finally, on November 7, 2013, I asked my friend and long-time colleague Len Sixt, if he wanted to develop a Twitter™ app for me. At this point, there was no thought of marketing the tool as a product. I just wanted a tool to save me the time of scheduling tweets. Even though the app was pretty expensive as a private toy, I figured it saved me hiring someone to schedule things on my behalf. By January 2014, a “baby” Social Jukebox was born, I had some basic functions to use, and it automatically saved me a ton of time. So we just kept plowing away and improving the program. Over the next few months, I would occasionally mention it to people. They seemed intrigued. Then, at the end of January 2015, we finally said, why not? So we pushed the app out into the market. Quietly, but “out” nonetheless. The response was wonderful. People liked it. We've had some more work to do, as with most projects, but the overall consensus was quite positive. After a very successful free trial when over 30,000 users signed up, we decided to launch a paid version. Over 1,500 users took advantage of the new offering over the next few months. While we were delighted with the success of the product, nothing stands still. So in early 2016, plans began to launch Social Jukebox with posting to Facebook and LinkedIn, in addition to Twitter. As these plans progressed, Len made a decision to move forward with his retirement. He knew the product would only continue to grow and wanted to step to the side to allow a development team take over the coding for the product. In July of 2016, beta testing of Social Jukebox began. In spite of some inevitable glitches, the initial users were pleased with the product. The current product was rolled out to all users in August of 2016. To automate or not, that is the question? Actually, it really isn’t the real question. The real question is how do I automate without losing my audience? In this episode, we take an old measurement acronym and adapt it for how to automate SMART. See what we did there? Automated Episode Highlights: Set it up. Define what you are hoping to gain from the automation and choose tools that help you achieve your goals. It’s not a good idea to set up your automation and forget about it. Never automate your interaction with people. Social Jukebox, Bulkly, RecurPost and CoSchedule are all tools that integrate with most social media platforms to help organize and automate your content. Try video as a way to thank people for their engagement and connect with people. Measure it. Your automation tool should include measurement so you can see how it is working. Before you start, have a measurement plan in place. If you missed it or need a refresher, we discussed measurement in episode 21. Activate and Automate. Part of activating an automation is to watch it closely to see how it performs, which relates to your measurement plan. Be on hand to interact with people. Be an active part of the automation and engage with people. Your participation shouldn’t be automated. Refine it. Make changes to what you are doing based on the results you are seeing. Look at what is working and what isn’t to refine and further refine your automation. Social media platform algorithms are ever-changing and what people see changes with that, so you may have to refine your efforts as a result. Test it. Check new ideas against the old and A/B test for best results. Try different types of posts, different times of the day and different platforms to test what works best. Never set it and forget it. Tim has one of the shortest bios known to man, which essentially says "started a company. Went bankrupt. Started another one. Sold it for $50mm. Now run Social Jukebox." That's it. Obviously, I think there's a little more to the man than that, and you'll hear about it on this interview. And it's a good one. Got kids who have ever failed? You ever failed? This is the episode for you. And of course, Tim is massively ADHD. We knew that from his bio, though. Enjoy!
Welcome to Episode 66 of the No Quit Living Podcast. NQL is a personal development podcast designed to help listeners achieve their goals and desires. Through hearing the inspiring stories and tips from the greats, we will all find it easier to stay motivated. Our 2nd ever, with many more to come, over seas interview was with Tim Fargo. The theme of today's show is "dreaming big," and Tim's story is sure to inspire you to do so. He's living proof that anybody is capable of achieving anything they put their minds to. His no quit story involves him getting served a lawsuit with his first business partner at a Christmas party that was filled with clients. That was terrible timing for Tim, but to make things worse, his partner had a background in law and the suit took years to complete. Though it was difficult, Tim let his lawyer do his job and focused his time and efforts into running his business. Tim talks about the importance of focus and how there are times where he puts unimportant tasks at the top of his priority list subconsciously to mask the important ones that are essential. When this happens, he checks himself and re-prioritizes. One of the most memorable parts of today's episode for us at NQL was Tim's quote - "If you want something different, do something different." Smooth Business Growth – 15 Minutes Of Pure Marketing Strategies Proven To Move The Needle
Hani Mourra is a dad, softwarepreneur, and the founder of the Repurpose.io, a software designed to help content creators automatically publish their Podcasts and Facebook Lives to all major media platforms and grow their audience faster. He’s also the CEO and founder of Simple Podcast Press Plugin, a company that specializes in online software for content creators. Main Questions Asked: What is Repurpose.io and how does it help content creators? Are content creators nervous about repurposing content? What does Simple Podcast Press do? What are some mistakes that podcasters do? How difficult is it to get started with Simple Podcast Press? Key Lessons Learned: Repurpose.io Repurpose is software that is meant to automate the creation of content in different formats and publishing it to a variety of platforms. You can create one piece of content like a Facebook Live and then create a set of rules that upload the video to YouTube, convert the video to audio and then upload it to Libsyn so you can use it as a podcast. Content creators are cautious about reusing their content but people consume content in different ways. People have different learning styles and having your content in a variety of formats is a good way to reach a larger audience. Repurpose doesn’t ask you to change your workflow, it takes over after you hit the publish button and does everything automatically. Repurpose also comes with templates for when you are converting audio to video, that makes uploading a podcast to YouTube easy. It also adds a Call To Action link in the first two lines of the description so it’s always visible when the episode is viewed on YouTube. Simple Podcast Press Simple Podcast Press started out as a tool that focused on automating publishing your podcast onto your WordPress site. The focus later became the player itself and the buttons that encourage the user to take action. It’s customizable for whatever platforms and actions you need and also encourages the listener to opt in to your email list. It also has an option for custom buttons that allow you to give away custom content that is specific to that episode. Another great feature is the clickable timestamps, they make it very easy for the listener to zero in on exactly what they want and creates a better listener experience. When it comes to the opt in box, it’s important to offer something that is short, actionable, and valuable. Podcasting Many podcasters edit too much, focus more on the content than the presentation of the episode. Ask for feedback and provide the content that your listeners are asking for. Email the segment of your list that opted in for the content that makes sense to them, don’t blast your whole list if it’s a topic that doesn’t interest them. Recycle your episodes with tools like MeetEdgar and Social Jukebox. Send people to your site to listen, don’t send them a link to the mp3. Don’t neglect Facebook, Facebook videos often have more views than the same video on YouTube. Podcasting is not usually the core of your business, you should focus on creating good content without spending hours on manually posting it on various platforms. Simple Video Press Simple Video Press is a WordPress plugin that brings in all your YouTube videos and creates blog posts for each video. It also incorporates the comments on the video automatically. Simple Social Press does essentially the same thing but for Facebook Live videos. Final Tips If you are a content creator, save yourself some time by using the suite of tools that Hani has built. Don’t be afraid to repurpose and recycle your content in different formats. Thank you for listening! If you enjoyed this podcast, please subscribe and leave a 5-star rating and review in iTunes! I was listening to the Book Feed the Muscle Burn the Fat and he relayed the story of a man at a Tony Robbins event (Tony is a major Business Guru). He told Tony that he had done EVERYTHING to grow his audience. Since he had tried everything Tony asked him, "Tell me the last 100 things you've tried." To this, the man answered, "Well I haven't tried 100 things." Tony then stated, "Then tell me the last 50 things." The man replied, "I haven't tried 50 things" Tony replied, "Then tell me the last 10 things you've tried." It turned out the man had tried about four things. We think we've tried everything, but there are more ways to connect with your audience, many of them that require just a little bit of time to setup up some technology. Today we need to look at ourselves in the mirror and ask, "Have I really done everything I can to promote my show, connect with my audience, and increase my reach? I think if we look deep into our hearts we know there is more. Here Is The Low Hanging Fruit Social media: You should be promoting your show on the social media channels. There are plugins such as social warfare. There are automation tools like Social Jukebox. Media hosts like Spreaker and Blubrry will publish your audio file as a video on YouTube. Spreaker will tweet out about your episode. Blubrry will create a sample of your show to tweet out and paste on Facebook. Libsyn will post to Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, iHeart Radio, LinkedIn, Blogger, Tumblr. Podcast Directories: There are four main directories you should be listed in. Apple Podcasts (formerly iTunes), Stitcher, TuneIn, and Google Play Music. Do You Have Subscribe Buttons On Your Site? One way to keep your numbers going up is to get people to subscribe. This includes buttons for ANDROID. Subscribeonandroid.com is a free site from blubrry where you can point people to that site (using your RSS feed) and if they don't have any apps to subscribe they will be prompted to download one. My friend Daniel J Lewis has a great plugin call Social Subscribe and Follow that creates amazing looking subscribe buttons Do You Have Share Buttons on Your Website? There are plugins (again I love social Warfare) that make it easy for your audience to tweet out your show. There are players like the coolcast player, the Smart Podcast Player, the Simple Podcast Press player. Don't get hung up too much on players as 80% of people are listening on on portable devices. With that said, can people share your episodes from their phone? Local Meetups I've had three people sign up for the School of Podcasting and I got to be on TV all from meeting local podcasters in Ohio. If you don't have a local meetup, do what I did. I created one. In the words of my friend Glenn "the Geek" Hebert, it's not who you know, it's who knows you. Check it out at www.meetup.com I run a local podcasters group for Northeast Ohio www.neohiopodcasters.com Reach Out to Other Similar Podcasts Some of my best friends are my "Competition." Daniel J. Lewis from the Audacity to Podcast, Ray Ortega who does the Podcasters Studio, Mike Dell works for Blubrry and does the Podcast Help Desk, there are others as well. Reach out to them and see if they'd like to co-host an episode or a segment, or be interviewed, or... or ... or.. Remember there really isn't any competition in podcasting. They can listen to you on Monday and your competition on another day of the week. It's not like radio where you are both on at the exact same time. Reach out to Businesses? If I did a show about weddings, I would reach out to every dress shop in the area and see if I could put some CDs at the check out for exchange for a link to their site, or a mention in the show. Go Record People at Events You can get a portable recorder for as little as $99 for the Zoom H1 or just use your phone. Then give these people your business card, and tell them they will be on a future episode. You do have business cards right? There are TONS of ideas Speaking of Daniel and Ray, we do a show together called the Podcasters Roundtable and we did an episode pointing out ways to promote your show (how to grow your audience from 100s to 1000s). The point here is you can't think about these ideas, you have to do them. In a recent (not safe for work) video Gary Vaynerchuck explained that he would Google his topic and connect every blog/podcast about his topic. He said 1 in every 347 will write your back, and that is better than zero. You Need to Quit Reading, Quit Watching, Quit Listening, and Start Doing If you're thinking of getting into podcasting, you can read articles, get confused cause some say to launch with 15 episodes, and some say (like me) it doesn't matter. Some say New and Noteworthy is the goal, and others (like me) say it's not that great. You can't improve what you don't start. How NOT to Make Money In Podcasting She's back! Jessica Kupferman runs the JKM Agency has a fun story today. In the same way that you learn new skills when you start podcasting, you will learn new skills when you take on a sponsor. You will need to learn how to read an advertisement. It's not as easy at it sounds. If you just read the bullet points, you can be boring. If you stray too far from the bullet points, you may forget to hit all the talking points. Today she talks about someone who had to redo an advertisement three times. The lesson is, read all the paperwork that comes with the sponsor. Know what you HAVE To say, know what you are ALLOWED to say, and then try to say it in an entertaining fashion. If you mess up, you don't get paid for that sponsor. For more information about getting a sponsor for your show check out Jessica at http://www.jkmagency.com Because of My Podcast Story Jessica Rhodes of Internet Connections had a live panel on her latest episodes. Want to know how to get more followers on social media? I've got you covered. This posts is the third in a series on Why Your Audience Isn't Growing. You should also read Why Your Social Media Isn't Growing to see mistakes you might be making! One of the biggest questions that people have about social media is how to get followers. No matter how many you currently have, we all seem to want to get MORE followers. And more. We can never have enough!! I especially know what it feels like to be just starting out where you have under 1000 followers. I remember my first year on Twitter with something like 300 followers, feeling like I would never grow. Getting followers feels like an impossible task. You need more followers so that you have some kind of social proof, so that more people will follow you, but no one will follow you without more followers. And I have found it to be true that once you pass a certain benchmark of at least a thousand people, it gets easier to grow. Getting followers is kind of like a chicken and egg problem. So let's talk about how you get more followers on social media, especially when you are just starting out OR when you are stuck. Note: This post contains affiliate links! That means at no extra cost to you, I will receive a commission if you purchase something through some of the links I share. Listen to How to Get More Followers on Social Media You can listen right here or on iTunes, Stitcher, or your favorite podcast app. Or keep reading below! HOW TO GET MORE FOLLOWERS ON SOCIAL MEDIA Before we even get into the specifics of how, I want to talk about the WHY. Specifically YOUR why. If you are not super clear on your why, you are going to struggle to grow your social media presence, your blog, and your audience. Your WHY is your purpose. My background is in writing, so I like to think of it as your theme. A theme isn't the beginning-middle-end of a story, but the ideas that run throughout, tying the story together. For an example, my WHY is that I want to help writers and bloggers build an online platform without being smarmy. I love helping people connect with their perfect audience online, using all the tools and strategies that smart marketers use, but without the icky salesy tactics. Knowing my WHY means that if I have a post idea that doesn't fit into that overarching purpose, I don't write it. Or I write it in a guest post somewhere else. Or on my other blog. If you aren't clear on your why or the audience you serve, you are going to really struggle! Take some time to write out a clear statement of purpose. This should include who you serve, how you serve them, and what is unique to you. HOW TO GET FOLLOWERS THROUGH CONTENT Once you have your why in place, you can both create and curate content that fits under the umbrella of your why. In the second post of this series I talked about curating content, which is essentially the way that you share other people's content on social media. I want to go even deeper on this idea of sharing relevant content. Consider your perfect audience (see my series on how to find your perfect audience) when you are coming up with content ideas to create. In the same way, think about your target audience when you are choosing Tweets to Retweet or pins to share on Pinterest. Ask yourself: Does this serve my perfect audience? When you share awesome content (your own and others), a really cool thing happens. People start to see you as an authority. You become their go-to for news, trends, and resources. You save them the time so they don't have to research all the latest trends or news. Sharing quality content will help you get more followers that are truly interested in you. That's why it's really important to share relevant content. PRO TIP: On Facebook in particular, you need to not only consider the topic, but the kind of content. If you keep sharing viral videos because they get great reach, but you don't CREATE video, this may hurt you in the long run. When you share your blog posts as links, your page is used to doing well with video, so the reach may diminish for link posts. An active page doesn't help you if it's active for video, but you are trying to drive traffic to a blog. Examples of People Sharing Consistent Quality Content Here are a few of my favorite creator/curators in different niches: The Sell More Books Show - Each week Bryan Cohen and Jim Kukral share five big newsworthy items and three tips related to book writing and marketing, especially in the indie space. I want to know what's going on, so I follow their podcast, follow them on Twitter, and like their Facebook page so hopefully I won't miss anything. Jenn's Trends - Jenn Herman has a blog focused on social media, specifically Instagram. Even though I've temporarily told Instagram, "it's not me, it's you," I can count on her to share big news I need to know about social media. I joined her Facebook group to keep up with what she's sharing about social media. Social Media Examiner - While this seems like a no-brainer because this is a hugely established site, I love Michael Stelzner's curiosity and passion for social media. (You can hear this particularly through his podcast, where he seems genuinely excited and interested in the guests.) HOW TO GET FOLLOWERS THROUGH CONTENT-SHARING TOOLS Sharing consistent quality content is HARD. Especially when you are also creating content too. I really rock at creating content. I love it. Give me content creation all. day. long. And while I shared in my post on why your blog isn't growing that it's not just about promotion, YOU HAVE TO PROMOTE your awesome content. If you are trying to curate good content from other people as well (which you should do), then you have even more posts to share and schedule. Promotion is a lot of work, so you'll want some tools to help with that. Note: Don't forget that you can't JUST promote. You have to engage with people as well! Read the previous post in this series for ideas. So what tools can help you get followers on social media through content sharing? My favorite tools to share quality content- Quuu - (Facebook & Twitter) This app will generate and autopost relevant content to your Twitter or Facebook feeds for you. Like most apps, you can use some features with the free version and then upgrade. I honestly don't LOVE pushing out content that I haven't seen first. But they have a great vetting process for the posts that they take, so you will get great content! Quuu Promote - This is a paid part of Quuu where you can submit posts to go in the Quuu feed. I've seen really great results from putting my posts in here. This means that when other people sign up for Quuu and autopost links, YOUR links go in the pool to be shared on a particular topic. This has resulted in a good amount of traffic and also shown me what content is working well. Check out these two posts, both about email marketing. (For reference, another promoted post I did had 17 clicks from only 80 shares, as compared to the 300-something shares for only 8 clicks.) They don't accept posts automatically, but look through each. Promo Republic - I love this social sharing tool because it comes with templates and stock photos that you can edit (think: Canva), but you don't have to LEAVE the platform to share them. Instead, you create them right there, write your text for a post, then choose to share on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, or Instagram (reminder, not autoschedule, since Insta doesn't allow that). They share trends that may help you come up with post ideas and you can create a queue of content that will post at optimal times. Get this on AppSumo for a limited time with my referral code (that gives me credit at no extra cost to you) HERE. Tailwind - I love this app for Pinterest! (It also does Instagram, but I don't use it for that.) It has one of the easiest scheduling dashboards I've used. You can click a button to shuffle them all, choose the best time slots you want per day, how many shares per day, and even join tribes of other Pinterest users to promote each other's content. If you use my affiliate link, you'll get a free month to try it out! Learn how to use tribes and where to find them Hootsuite - I have been using Hootsuite maybe longer than any other social tool! It's very similar to Buffer, which a lot of people like, but because I have never seen a reason to switch! Choose which one works for you. You can manage up to three accounts with Hootsuite's free plan, including Facebook (page, group, or profile), LinkedIn, and Twitter. I create Twitter lists within Hootsuite and then can easily go in and schedule content on a weekly basis. (Though I've been HORRIBLE about this lately.) It clears the clutter when you just want to pop in and see what's going on over on Twitter. This makes it easier to get in, engage and schedule, then get out without getting lost. How to Use Twitter in 15 Minutes a Day Iconosquare - Iconosquare is NOT a social scheduling platform and is strictly for Instagram. But it's a really helpful tool to manage your followers and to see what content people engage with so that you can create more of the same. You can even track details like which hashtags performed well for you. As with most tools, you can get more when you pay. Social Jukebox - This is a great tool to create a content library (or "jukebox") of evergreen content that get shared again and again over time. RecurPost - Similar to Social Jukebox, this tool will let you schedule posts to share again and again. If you don't want to pay for Edgar or SmarterQueue, you can use these two together to get the max number of posts without paying. PRO TIP: Remember to share your own posts with as much gusto and passion as you share other people's posts. This tip comes by way of Paula Rollo of Beauty Through Imperfection and her Facebook Group, Actionable Blogging Tips. HOW TO GET MORE FOLLOWERS THROUGH FOLLOW FOR FOLLOW I know that in the past year, the idea of getting followers by following people brings out the eye rolls. Especially on Instagram, people talk about getting 300 new followers in a day, then losing 294 two days later. (True story.) That's a LOT of people doing it wrong. The BEST way to follow people to get followers on Instagram and Twitter is to follow people you are actually interested in, interact with them in a way that isn't smarmy (ex: DON'T follow, then tweet at them telling them you followed and asking them to follow back), and then in a few weeks or month, unfollow the people who aren't following you back UNLESS they are stellar content creators and you want to keep following. Give this practice a little more of a personal touch and a little more time to see it actually work for you. A Note on Facebook I have not mentioned much about growing a Facebook page here. There are a few reasons for this. First, this can be one of the harder platforms to grow. Because of the way the Facebook algorithm works, people often won't see your content. Even huge pages have very little reach on posts. I'll talk more about this in a separate post, because it's a HUGE topic. HOW TO GET MORE FOLLOWERS...SPARINGLY Facebook groups - Many blogger Facebook groups have threads on a weekly or daily basis where you can link to your social profiles and then follow everyone and have them follow you. You really want TARGETED followers, so these don't always work well. But depending on your goals or while you're trying to get past that social proof number, this may really help. Giveaways - You can definitely grow quickly and with big results using giveaways. But you are more than likely going to end up with people who don't care about you or your content. Particularly if you are giving away money or a gift card to a store. Try to be more targeted to your audience and give a great prize, but one that is specific to writers or moms or your audience. Ads - You can run Facebook ads to get likes for your page, but this is something I would do sparingly. Facebook seems to drop your reach right after you pay for things to make you think you NEED to pay for things. So, realize this is an option in the ads manager, but don't rely on this. Remember the Context When You Are Trying to Get Followers! If you are trying to get more followers on social media, don't forget your overall purpose. Think of the kinds of followers you really want and the long-term goals. Consider all these tips in conjunction with the reasons your social media isn't growing, particularly thinking about the idea that you need to be SOCIAL. What are YOUR tips for getting more followers on social media? Share in the comments!

I'm a big dreamer and an ideas person. But today I'm going to tell you to stop creating content! Yes. I said it. Stop. Keep reading (or listen to the podcast) to learn why AND what you should do instead. A big thanks to our sponsor, Ambition Ally, the makers of PopUpAlly Pro! Stop Creating Content I'm the kind of person who loves to START. If I could hire a team of finishers, I would be the most productive person on the planet. I have half-finished books everywhere-- both books I'm reading and books I'm WRITING. I like to paint and I have half-finished paintings stacked up against the wall in one room. I even have a half-finished hallway. So creating content is my jam. I DO finish blog posts (though I have a ton of drafts in my lifestyle blog, waiting for an image or a few more paragraphs) because they are shorter. As a lover of starts, I can just keep on churning out blog posts. I used to post every day of the week, multiple times a DAY. Then I moved down to once a day, seven days a week. Then five days. Then three days. Then one day a week. And you know what? My pageviews didn't drop. (Not until I became a blogging derelict and stopped posting weekly at all...) There are two main problems with creating so much content: You get stuck on a hamster wheel of creation and feel like you can't stop. You don't give each piece of content the attention it deserves. The Hamster Wheel of Content Creation When you create content over a period of weeks, months, or years, sometimes you get to a point where it's like the schedule owns YOU instead of the other way around. If you've ever ruined a vacation because of your blog, you know what I mean. (Yep. I've done it.) It's time to stop creating content when the content owns YOU. If there is guilt when you don't post every day. Or every week. Maybe you should STOP. Take a breath. Take a break. Remind your content who is boss. (Spoiler alert: it's YOU.) If you feel constantly behind and stressed and rushing for a deadline or to get that Instagram post up at just the right time, then maybe you should stop creating content. I don't mean forever, by the way. I'll get to that later. Being a Good Steward of Gondor...and Your Content One other way you may know you need to stop creating content is if you are not giving each piece of content the love it deservers. If you are rushing to post. Not proofing. Not creating awesome content because you don't have time and just want that post up. Or if you don't have time to promote the content. Because let's be honest: this isn't 2007. If you create content and write a blog post, people DON'T just come. (Unless you rock your SEO and Fred-- the new Google update-- doesn't hate you.) You must promote posts for people to find them. If you aren't promoting your content well, then you are just tossing it into the abyss. Don't waste your content. Share your content well so that it gets the attention it deserves. This means that you need to set up some kind of system by which you are constantly sharing your content and promoting it. (More on that in a minute.) If you aren't being a good steward and sharing your already existing content, maybe it's time to stop creating content. Stop Creating Content and Do THIS Instead If it's time to stop creating content (even for a bit), here are two big things you can do instead. Repurpose existing content Set up an evergreen sharing system for your content I love, love love repurposing content. It can be a fine art. I'm going to share a few really helpful posts on that here instead of going into detail in this post. Repurpose existing content into a paid product. Read my post, listen to episode 90, and download the free case study on how I took a few live trainings that were free and turned them into over $1500 worth of income. Update old content to increase traffic. This post from Becky and Paula goes into great detail about how you can update old posts to see more results. It's super detailed from your title to the amount of whitespace in your post! The point of repurposing existing content is to take something that is already working and make it work better. Do more with it. Change and tweak rather than starting from scratch. It saves you time and it makes better use of your old posts. Which brings me to the second thing you can do instead of creating new content. In order to be a good steward of your content, you should set up an evergreen sharing system. This is not simply scheduling every week in something like Hootsuite or Buffer. This is setting up automation that means your posts will keep on sharing after you set it up ONCE. (Read more about the difference between automation and scheduling.) You can use tools like Social Jukebox (which I use), Recurpost, or Meet Edgar to create sort of content libraries with your links and images and even how you want to word the post itself. Set a schedule of how often you want it to post and where, and then YOU'RE DONE. For Pinterest, you can use something like Tailwind or Board Booster. These aren't quite automation, but close. You can set things up for a long time and even loop things in Board Booster. You are not being a good steward of your content if you aren't sharing it well. Unless you want your blog to be a diary that only you read, you need to get it in front of people. This should happen with the double-edged sword of SEO and social promotions. If you aren't doing these things for your current content, maybe you should stop creating content until you have a system in place. So...what do you think? Are you on board with this movement to stop creating content? Are you treating your current content well?
