Send us Fan MailThe word "merger" makes a lot of nonprofit leaders flinch — and honestly, that's understandable. When you've poured years of your life into building an organization, considering a structural change can feel like waving the white flag. But here's the reframe: a merger isn't the end of your mission, it might actually be the most powerful way to advance it. In this episode, we dig into what it really looks like when nonprofits explore collaboration, formal partnerships, and mergers — and why the leaders who avoid these conversations entirely may actually be putting their organizations at greater risk.On this week's episode of The Small Nonprofit Podcast, Maria sits down with Jon Hoffmann, Director of Elevate NP of Southwestern Pennsylvania, a capacity building initiative supporting small and midsize nonprofits. Jon brings a rich background spanning human services, executive leadership, fundraising, and consulting, and has guided many organizations through partnership and merger processes. Whether you're an ED who's quietly wondering if a merger might make sense, or a leader who just wants to understand the full spectrum of collaboration options, this episode will help you get clear, get strategic, and get moving. If this episode was useful, grab the 30-Day Board Fundraising Challenge at gofurthertogether.ca/boardchallenge — it's free and it gives your board actual structure. Q&A on the series American Rust: Broken Justice with actor & executive producer Jeff Daniels and writer/co-showrunner/executive producer Adam Rapp. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. Amidst the arrival of fracking to Southwestern Pennsylvania, Del Harris and Grace Poe try to rebuild their lives after a series of harrowing events, but a string of seemingly unrelated murders hints at a much larger conspiracy that threatens everything they've grown to love.
The Robotics Manufacturing Hub helps small and medium-sized manufacturers in the Southwestern Pennsylvania region: Evaluate their operations Explore if robotics will improve productivity Prototype solutions without a commitment to installation Select solutions that offer the highest return on investment Understand how robotics can augment workforce gaps Manage the impact of robotics on their workforce The Robotics Manufacturing Hub leverages the ARM Institute's Mill 19 facility in Pittsburgh's Hazelwood neighborhood to prototype solutions and demonstrate proofs-of-concept at no-cost for small and medium sized manufacturers. ARM's Tasha Miller gives us more details on how the hub is a robotics "petting zoo" for manufacturers to get to know more about robotics and how they can help their operations, growth and bottom line. Also through the Southwestern Pennsylvania Region's Build Back Better Challenge grant, the ARM Institute is managing and has awarded $6M in funding to four regional Innovation Accelerators, formerly called Makerspaces. These are: Community College of Allegheny County (CCAC) – CCAC's Entrepreneurial Labs and Makerspace The Digital Foundry at New Kensington (DFNK) – Penn State New Kensington IUP STEAMSHOP – Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) MAKERSPACE District – Westmoreland County Community College This funding helps to build upon existing capabilities within the Innovation Accelerators, enhance their equipment and offerings, and make their services more readily available. The services offered through each Accelerator are unique. Through the grant, the ARM Institute will advise the Innovation Accelerators and help to expand the scope of their services to benefit small and medium-sized manufacturers and manufacturing entrepreneurs. This week on The Open Door (November 29th), panelists Jim Hanink, Mario Ramos-Reyes, and Valerie Niemeyer continue their discussion of the art of translation, Eastern Catholicism, and the relation between Thomism and Ressourcement theology with special and returning guest Professor Matthew Minerd. He is a Ruthenian Catholic, raised Roman Catholic in a mixed American-Slavic and Appalachian cultural context in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Matthew is a husband and father, a seminary professor, and a translator.Has your work as a translator triggered new questions for you about biblical translations? Are there any translations that you think are especially helpful? You are an Eastern Catholic and teach in an Eastern Catholic seminary. What do Western Catholics especially need to know about Eastern Catholic spirituality? After Vatican II there were major changes in the Roman liturgy. Some now prefer what Benedict XVI presented as the Extraordinary Rite; others have embraced the liturgy of Eastern Catholicism. How have Eastern Catholics reacted to the liturgical changes in the West? What are some distinctive theological influences in Eastern Catholicism?Has Eastern Catholicism experienced special difficulties in addressing the relation between Church and State? Some speak of Jacques Maritain as the single most influential Thomist of the last century. Was he open to Ressourcement theology? You have a leadership role in the American Maritain Association. Where do you see the spirit of Jacques and Raïssa Maritain active today?Maritain was deeply engaged in the politics of his time. Does Thomism offer a foundation for constructive politics? What's your view of the American Solidarity Party?Could you tell us a bit about your current projects?
This week on The Open Door (November 15th), panelists Jim Hanink, Mario Ramos-Reyes, and Valerie Niemeyer discuss the art of translation, Eastern Catholicism, and the relation between Thomism and Ressourcement theology. Our special guest is Professor Matthew Minerd. He is a Ruthenian Catholic, raised Roman Catholic in a mixed American-Slavic and Appalachian cultural context in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Minerd is a husband and father, a seminary professor, and a translator. You have become, in recent years, a distinguished translator. How did this come about? Some say that to translate is to betray: Traduttore, traditore! It's a provocative charge, but could it be that where there is smoke there is fire?Is the art of translating a kind of interpretation? Does it involve compromisesYou are an Eastern Catholic and teach in an Eastern Catholic seminary, Ss. Cyril and Methodius. What do Western Catholics especially need to know about the Eastern Catholic heritage? How does it serve the Universal Church?Do you have any distinctive challenges in presenting Thomism to Eastern Catholics? How are you working to resolve the tension between Thomism and the Ressourcement of the Nouvelle Théologie?Reginald Garrigou-Lagrange has been dubbed “the sacred monster of Thomism.” Your recent translations of his books are Thomistic Common Sense: The Philosophy of Being and the Development of Doctrine, The Order of Things: The Realism of the Principle of Finality, Philosophizing in Faith, Essays on the Beginning and End of Wisdom, and The Sense of Mystery: Clarity and Obscurity in the Intellectual Life. What is your own assessment of Garrigou-Lagrange?Some speak of Jacques Maritain as the single most influential Thomist of the last century. You are active in the American Maritain Association. Where do you see the spirit of Maritain active today?Maritain was deeply engaged in the politics of his time. Does Thomism offer a foundation for constructive politics? What are some of your current projects?

The NIEHS Superfund Research Program (SRP) is sponsoring a Risk e-Learning webinar series, hosted by CLU-IN, focused on research efforts to develop tools for sampling, monitoring, detecting, and characterizing per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination. The three-part series will feature SRP-funded researchers and collaborators whose research focuses, in part, on understanding the distribution and fate of PFAS in the environment. The second session will highlight case studies featuring SRP research to understand PFAS sources and to predict fate and transport. To learn about and register for the other sessions in this webinar series, please see the SRP website. Matthew Farrell is a Ph.D. candidate working in the Planchart Lab at North Carolina State University (NC State) working under Antonio Planchart, Ph.D. Matthew will present on the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of several PFAS through aquatic food chains. He will expand on how this research was modeled through a system beginning with contaminated water and continuing with periphyton, larval mayflies, and zebrafish — tracking PFAS burdens through each step in the food chain. Mark Brusseau, Ph.D., of the University of Arizona will discuss the conceptual and mathematical models for PFAS retention being explored in his lab. He will also describe the chemometric tools used to develop the first quantitative structure-property relationship model for predicting interfacial adsorption coefficients for PFAS. This QSPR model can be combined with our comprehensive retention model to predict the retention and migration potential of PFAS in soil and groundwater systems. Carla Ng, PhD., of the University of Pittsburgh will provide an update on activities to reveal PFAS contamination in Southwestern Pennsylvania, an area that has received relatively little focus compared to other parts of the state. The talk will specifically address a case of accidental release in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, and efforts to understand the life cycle and contribution of legacy and ongoing industrial activity on PFAS profiles in the region. Tonight's guest, Tom Danley, is a farmer who lives in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Tom had his first Sasquatch sighting in 1983, when he was 12. His sighting/encounter happened near Emporium, Pennsylvania, while he was on a fishing trip with his grandfather. Tom wasn't the only one who had a sighting that day, however. His grandfather saw them too. You see, it wasn't just one Sasquatch that they saw that day. They encountered a whole family of Sasquatch. That isn't the only sighting Tom's had in his time, though. He's had several over the years. We hope you'll tune in and listen to him share them with you. After watching her page grow, Eve started writing blog posts, created a website and added much more information for people to discover.
