From the influence of governmental systems to the nuances of coding, coverage, and payments, Karandeep shares real-world insights for MedTech companies developing their global market strategies. This usually involves navigating government programs (like Medicare) or private insurance, and it determines how easily hospitals, clinics, or individuals can buy and use a product.Simple Analogy: Think of it like getting a movie produced: regulatory clearance is getting your movie rated, but reimbursement is making sure theaters agree to pay you to...

Isaac White is a Mohawk journalist based in Akwesasne, upstate New York. His story highlights the importance of and dangers to local and Indigenous media. Then Mickey Huff speaks with John Collins, the founder of the independent journalism site weavenews.org, about the responsibilities of the non-corporate press in the years ahead, as the biases and failures of corporate media become increasingly evident. Collins is a professor emeritus of global studies at St. Lawrence University. He explains that journalism is too important to be left to the powers that be and what we need right now more than ever is news of, for, and by the people. John also talks about his books and years of work on Palestine and how Palestine is in fact not only an issue unto itself but also a lens for examining colonialism, capitalism, media, the politics of representation, and more.   The post The Special Challenges to Indigenous Reporting, a Case from NY / The Mandate for Grassroots Journalism appeared first on KPFA.

Suburban and Rural Courts: Their Perspective Do Remote Hearings Pose Special Challenges?

November 21st, 2023, Court Leader's Advantage Podcast Episode Suburban and rural courts often face distinctive issues.  These issues are different from those of truly small courts, but also different from the issues faced by massive metropolitan court organizations. It is tempting to always talk about big problems in big courts. It is easy to forget that two-thirds of the courts in our country are benches made up of fewer than 10 judges.   Today's episode is going to revisit a relatively recent phenomenon: remote hearings. But it is going to look at it from the perspective of courts that are sometimes overlooked: suburban and rural courts.   As recently as 2019, remote hearings were an oddity.  Few courts offered them; few parties asked for them. Then came COVID and remote hearings became a regular part of many court calendars.  The long-term future of remote hearings is still a question mark. Most litigants, attorneys, and the general public seem to enjoy the convenience of appearing remotely. Judges seem less enthusiastic.   Appearance rates are up; more cases are being cleared.  But, technology glitches, scheduling problems, and the casual nature with which some litigants treat remote hearings dampens that support.  How do suburban and rural courts address the challenges that come with remote hearings. Here to discuss this issue are Angie VanSchoick:  Town Clerk and Court Administrator for the Municipal Court in the town of Silverthorne, Colorado; Stacey Fields: Court Administrator for the Municipal Court in Crestwood, Missouri; Danielle Trujillo:  Court Administrator for the Municipal Court in the City of Littleton, Colorado; Frank Maiocco: Court Administrator for the Superior Court in Kitsap County, Washington

That jumped to $1.4 million a month during the first year of the pandemic, and has remained high ever since. According to their president & CEO, Richard LeBer, they're currently having to spend almost a million dollars a month to provide food to those in need. Add the challenges and increased need brought about by Hurricane Ian, and the coming summer months when kids are out of school and seasonal workers have less income, and it's easy to see how hard the staff and volunteers at the Harry Chapin Food Bank must be working to continue meeting the demand for food across this region.

But many people don't fully appreciate the particular risks women face when it comes to heart health. In this episode, our host Melissa Eagan speaks with Dr. Joanne Armstrong, Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Women's Health and Genomics at CVS Health. Dr. Armstrong explains how heart disease looks different in women and how the reproductive journey can increase lifetime risk. We also hear from Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, Vice President and Chief Health Equity Officer at CVS Health. Dr. Khaldun discusses the need for the health care system to move from a one-size-fits-all approach to recognizing the unique needs not only of women but of particular groups of women. “A Black woman is actually more likely to have high blood pressure than a White woman,” she notes. Meanwhile, “Hispanic women are actually twice as likely to have diabetes, which we know contributes to heart disease.” CVS Health is working to improve women's heart health right in the community through screenings at local CVS MinuteClinics. Minoka McPherson, a family nurse practitioner and a Senior Practice Manager for MinuteClinic, talks to Melissa about the services that they provide. In addition, she discusses how mental health conditions like depression and chronic stress can also be risk factors for heart disease. Learn moreLearn about hands-only CPR training from the American Heart AssociationSchedule an appointment at a MinuteClinic

THE BEAUTIFUL FACES OF CM MAMAS series continues with Annette Dionisio - "Will CM methods work for my child with special challenges?" This might be a question that has been asked when considering a CM education for a precious child with special challenges. Join Mariana as she speaks with Annette, our dear IRL friend and a CM homeschooling mama who is devoted to providing a Charlotte Mason home and homeschool for her 3 young children, one of whom has special challenges arising from ADHD, and various processing and developmental delays. We are deeply thankful to Annette for sharing her journey with us - both the heartbreaking difficulties, as well as the beautiful triumphs, as she intentionally implements the Charlotte Mason philosophy and methods. “Mothers owe a 'thinking love' to their Children.––"The mother is qualified," says Pestalozzi, "and qualified by the Creator Himself, to become the principal agent in the development of her child; ... and what is demanded of her is––a thinking love ... God has given to the child all the faculties of our nature, but the grand point remains undecided––how shall this heart, this head, these hands be employed? to whose service shall they be dedicated? A question the answer to which involves a futurity of happiness or misery to a life so dear to thee. Maternal love is the first agent in education." "We are waking up to our duties and in proportion as mothers become more highly educated and efficient, they will doubtless feel the more strongly that the education of their children during the first six years of life is an undertaking hardly to be entrusted to any hands but their own. And they will take it up as their profession––that is, with the diligence, regularity, and punctuality which men bestow on their professional labours. That the mother may know what she is about, may come thoroughly furnished to her work, she should have something more than a hearsay acquaintance with the theory of education, and with those conditions of the child's nature upon which such theory rests.” - Charlotte Mason, Vol. 1, p. 2 Resources mentioned and others Annette has found helpful over the years: A Delectable Education ( ADelectableEducation.com. The suits challenge the executive orders Gov. Roy Cooper has used during the COVID-19 pandemic to keep bars shuttered. Jessica Thompson, attorney with the Pacific Legal Foundation, discusses the suit she filed on behalf of owners of a popular Greenville bar. It has been closed for more than nine months because of government mandates. The U.S. House of Representatives recently voted to decriminalize marijuana. Among those objected: U.S. Rep. Dan Bishop, R-9th District. During a speech on the House floor, Bishop outlined his concerns about potential negative consequences of changing marijuana’s legal status. Voters selected Mark Robinson to serve as North Carolina’s first black lieutenant governor. The second-highest-ranking office in state government’s executive branch marks Robinson’s first job as an elected official. Ep. 010 - Two Lawyers Care for Their Souls

Break Form

On this tenth episode of Break Form, in addition to talking about what's been happening in their respective lives (Sarah gets crafty in anticipation of her son's first birthday, itches to write, and has an (awake) dream involving a bear. Annette remembers what makes legal work stressful as she attempts to balance contract work while building her business and trying to write), Sarah and Annette get soulful by discussing Thomas Moore's book, Care of the Soul. Unlike self-help books which tout quick fixes and five-step programs for increasing happiness, Moore, a Catholic monk turned psychotherapist, writes that care of the soul "is not a project of self-improvement, nor a means of being released from the pains of human existence. It is not at all concerned with living properly or with emotional health. Soul is its own purpose and end. We know we are well on the way to soul when we live with attachment to the world and the people around us, and when we live as much from the heart as from the head." Join us as we discuss how attention to rituals, symbols, dreams, and everyday poetics help deepen a sense of soul.
