The first question in the Westminster Shorter Catechism is this: “What is the chief end of man?” I have found that the answer informs all that we are and everything we do in our lives. The answer is this: “To glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” Everything we do in life is an act of worship, and everything we do in life should be done to glorify God. This includes how we drive. This should cause us to think about the speed we drive, how we react to and interact with other drivers, and how we respond to traffic jams and slowdowns when we are in a hurry. Parents, as the one's who train our kids to drive, it's about more than how to operate an automobile. New findings from the 2023 Drowsy Driving Survey from the National Sleep Foundation found that one in six teens report driving drowsy during their first two years behind the wheel, and most believe that drowsy driving is not as dangerous while driving drunk or distracted. Parents, this is an aspect of driver training we mustn't avoid.

Teen Driver Faces Charges in Fatal Accident Involving Pope High Student Local Marietta Resident Miraculously Survives Headshot During Motel 6 Robbery Attempt Pebblebrook High School Teens Arrested for Possession of Firearms on Campus   All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!    BREAK: CU OF GA   STORY 1: 18-Year-Old Driver Charged in Crash That Killed Pope High Student An 18-year-old driver, Oliver Luis Roman, from Powder Springs, was arrested following a fatal car crash on Jan. 9 in Woodstock. The crash resulted in the deaths of two teens, Gabriel Escandon, 17, and Esteban Cortez-Rendon, 18. The Cherokee Sheriff's Office reported that the Mazda 6, carrying five occupants, left the roadway and hit a tree. Roman and two other teens were injured. Speed was identified as a contributing factor. Roman, a student at Hillgrove High School, faces charges including vehicular homicide, serious injury by vehicle, reckless driving, and license violation. He is currently in custody without bond at the Cherokee County jail. STORY 2: Marietta Man Survives Gunshot to Head in Attempted Robbery at Motel 6 A Marietta man, Garrett Osteen, was shot in the head during an attempted robbery while dropping off a friend at a Motel 6 on Delk Road on Jan. 14. Five armed individuals, linked to a recent carjacking at Kennesaw State University, demanded money from Osteen and his friend Willie Ruffin. Osteen attempted to drive away but was fired upon, sustaining a head injury. Remarkably, Osteen recovered quickly and provided witness testimony the following day. Four suspects are in custody, with one juvenile outstanding. The arrests, involving multiple law enforcement agencies, are part of a larger crackdown on a series of carjackings and robberies. Collaboration between agencies and advanced technology have facilitated swift communication and coordination in combating crime. STORY 3: Teens Charged With Bringing Guns to Pebblebrook High School Two Mableton teenagers, Malik Ta'Veon Watkins, 18, and Heaven Marrow, 17, were arrested for bringing handguns, one of which was stolen, to Pebblebrook High School on Jan. 31. Watkins allegedly concealed a loaded Glock 44 handgun in Marrow's backpack to evade detection by staff. Both face charges including felony carrying weapons within a school safety zone and felony theft by receiving firearm. Marrow was arrested on-site by Cobb Schools Police, while Watkins was apprehended by Cobb County Police later. STORY 4: Attorneys Accuse DA of Improper Handling of Police Shooting Case Attorneys representing the family of Devonte Brown, shot and killed by a Cobb police officer in 2021, allege that the Cobb District Attorney's office failed to present a complete case to the grand jury, which could have indicted the officer, Ian McConnell. Brown was killed after a car chase where he drove recklessly in a stolen vehicle. The DA's office disputes the claims, stating that investigations must be completed before presenting to the grand jury. The first question in the Westminster Shorter Catechism is this: “What is the chief end of man?” I have found that the answer informs all that we are and everything we do in our lives. The answer is this: “To glorify God and enjoy Him forever.” Everything we do in life is an act of worship, and everything we do in life should be done to glorify God. This includes how we drive. This should cause us to think about the speed we drive, how we react to and interact with other drivers, and how we respond to traffic jams and slowdowns when we are in a hurry. Parents, as the one's who train our kids to drive, it's about more than how to operate an automobile. New findings from the 2023 Drowsy Driving Survey from the National Sleep Foundation found that one in six teens report driving drowsy during their first two years behind the wheel, and most believe that drowsy driving is not as dangerous while driving drunk or distracted. Parents, this is an aspect of driver training we mustn't avoid.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. Teen crash rates are nearly four times higher than those of adult drivers. Carrying passengers, particularly other teens, greatly increases crash risk for teen drivers. Those statistics are from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. What can be done to make young people better and safer drivers and make the roads safer for everyone? The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has done research on teen drivers using a driving simulator. Cognitive neuroscientist Liz Walshe was the study's lead author and joined us on The Spark Tuesday. Walshe was asked what scenarios presented the biggest challenges for the teen drivers on the simulator,"Some of them are in urban or more rural, like suburban settings. There's some that are hazard zones where there might be construction going on. There's some scenarios where an ambulance comes up and we have some scenarios where a hazard suddenly appears in the road. And so there is one where there's a children's playground on the side of the road. There's a ball that comes tumbling out of the playground. And that seems to be a challenging scenario. We didn't in this study specifically compare the different scenarios, but having looked at this drive in a number of different studies, we do see that that's a sudden hazard situation that can be difficult for some teens to handle if they're not doing the right things, coming up to that environment and thinking I should slow down or I should be scouting for children or for other things." Walshe added speeding, tailgating and lane control as three other areas many of the young drivers struggled with. How does Walshe envision the research and the stimulator being used?,"I think the path we really see going forward is to say we know there are very specific skill deficits that some young drivers still have even after they get their licenses. And so we really need to intervene early. The highest lifetime risk of being in a crash is in the first few months after you get your license. So that's a critical period where we could definitely be doing better and doing more to reduce our crash risk. So I think we can use this tool to say these are the skills we need to focus interventions on, and these are the specific teens who need them because they're at higher risk than others. And I think also just reassessing the kind of the value of more formalized driver training as well. And that's coming from some of our other work that we've done in Ohio. But it does seem to be a trend about states that have requirements for behind the wheel training with an instructor, that there can be a lower crash risk for young drivers. A crash on Sunday in south Charlotte left a high school student dead. Ella Lukse, a 10th-grade student at Providence High School, was killed after being involved in a car crash on Raintree Lane on Sunday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools confirmed on Tuesday.The school's principal sent a message out to parents saying school officials were heartbroken by Luske's death and asked everyone to keep her family and friends in their thoughts. CMS's Crisis Response Team will be at the school to assist with the emotional needs of anyone impacted by the situation.Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say the crash happened around 8:57 p.m. on Raintree Lane. A 2006 Jeep was traveling south when it struck a 2019 Volkswagen. The Jeep then overturned and the Volkswagen struck a tree.
