EPA DOCUMENTS REVEAL MORE SPECS ON THE 2022 GMC HUMMER EV PICKUP | CAR & DRIVER - General Motors submitted a preliminary test document to the EPA revealing a few interesting specs on the 2022 GMC Hummer EV Edition 1 pickup. - The new electric truck will go 329 miles on a single charge with 212.7 kWh of usable energy and achieve 47 MPGe combined, according to GM's test data. - The Hummer is as heavy as 9063 pounds, and the big battery alone weighs 2923 pounds - General Motors claimed that the electric pickup would travel 350 miles on a single charge of its 200.0-kWh Ultium battery - According to the EPA filings, the Hummer will achieve a 329-mile EPA combined range, consuming electricity at 47 MPGe EPA combined, some 33 percent less than the Rivian's 70-MPGe rating. - Obviously weight is a huge factor, and we now know a few more details about that, too. The big battery pack alone weighs 2923 pounds, almost as much as an entire Honda Civic. GMC reports in the EPA document a curb weight of 9063 pounds, which is nearly 2000 pounds heavier than the Rivian R1T Launch Edition we just tested. - The data also shows a battery capacity of 617 amp-hours. Multiplied by its 400-volt operating voltage, that yields 246.8 kWh, which should equate with the double-stacked pack's gross capacity. That would mean its usable capacity is 86 percent of the total - GMC says that this test is the final certification for the Hummer's 2022 model year. - Cheaper models will arrive in the next few years, including the dual-motor base model in 2024. EV drivers will be able to use about 35 Tesla Supercharging stations in the country (at least several more are planned for 2022). The document was shared on the TMC forums by member Oliver's MX, who says it came from a relative who works at the facility, and shows the 4860 production yields for Kato Road on January 22, 2022. - 13 of the 14 machines had very good production yields with the majority of each bar being “green” and above 90%. - On the right side of the document, we see the list of defects which caused batteries to be “bad.” The leading cause at 1.4% was “Flap folding in – Cathode”, followed closely by “Single Wind Cut Position Recovery – Cathode” at 1.2%. - If accurate, this one day of production would be enough to build about 10 Model Ys. - While that number does seem low, Oliver was also told by his relative that Tesla has approximately 1,000,000 good cells stockpiled to support the production ramp of Giga Texas. This would be enough for about 1,666 Model Ys. Welcome to a new Patreon Producer KEVIN SHERTZ ELECTRIC CAR BOOM: AUSTRALIA SHOULD BE AN EV LEADER, SAYS INDUSTRY Sales of new electric cars in Australia have more than tripled in the past 12 months, growing to more than 24,000 off the back of state government rebates, discounts and a more competitive domestic market driving down prices. Data reveals battery and plug-in hybrid electric car sales grew to a 2.39 per cent market share of new vehicles, up from 0.78 per cent in 2020. Tesla topped the list, selling 15,054 Model 3s. The Electric Vehicle Council data, released on Monday, shows five of the top 10 highest-selling models in Australia last year retail under $50,000 drive-away. Chinese-owned MG ZS SUV was the second highest with 1388 cars sold. The MG HS model, which retails for about $46,990 was fourth while the electric Mitsubishi Outlander, Hyundai Ioniq and Nissan Leaf also made the top 10. The Morrison government has been heavily criticised by carmakers and advocacy groups for its refusal to set targets in the sector and previous public ridicule of the technology. It has ruled out subsidising new cars to encourage widespread uptake. https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/ev-boom-australia-should-be-an-electric-vehicle-leader-20220127-p59rou.html TESLA ACCUSED OF INFLATING SALES NUMBERS IN AUSTRALIA DAYS AFTER REGISTRATION DATA RELEASED Tesla has been accused of inflating its sales figures in Australia after a report released by the electric-vehicle lobby group claimed 15,000 examples were sold locally last year – just days after registration data revealed 12,000 Tesla cars were added to the nation's roads in 2021. Based on unsubstantiated figures released by Tesla and the Electric Vehicle Council, the Tesla Model 3 sedan has scuppered the 28-year winning streak of the Toyota Camry in the mid-size sedan class in Australia based on national registration data, the Tesla Model 3 finished a close second Tesla delivered a record number of vehicles in Australia in 2021 – more than triple its tally from the prior year – and outsold the entire line-ups of long-standing car brands such as Lexus, Skoda, Volvo, and Jeep, even though Tesla only had one model. industry insiders are concerned about the sizeable discrepancy of 3000 vehicles – or 25 per cent – between Tesla's claim and the registration data sourced by the National Exchange of Vehicle and Driver Information System the Tesla-supplied figure of 15,000 sales in Australia last year was 3000 more than two independent sets of registration information. https://www.drive.com.au/news/tesla-accused-of-inflating-sales-numbers-in-australia-days-after-registration-data-released/ EUROPE: PLUG-INS SURGED TO RECORD 29% SHARE IN DECEMBER 2021 The European passenger car market was not able to rebound from the chip supply crisis and noted another decrease last month. According to the data, in December, the plug-in car share increased to a new monthly record of 29.3%. That's over 278,000. "In December, low emissions vehicles also set a new monthly market share record with 29.3%. The popularity of PHEVs and BEVs were boosted by better availability at dealerships, and the continued efforts from governments to incentivise consumers to shift away from traditional segments. This level of growth meant that EVs accounted for a major portion of all new car registration in several markets, including Norway (90%), the Netherlands (64%), Sweden (61%), and Denmark (57%)." - JATO Dynamics In 2021, plug-ins noted about 2.25 million registrations (28 European markets), which is 19% of the total market. December brought huge news, as the Tesla Model 3 was the best-selling car of any type, regardless of the powertrain, with 27,358 units. It's actually the second time, as the Model 3 was #1 also in September 2021. Tesla is now bigger in Europe (at least in a peak month) than brands like Kia, Citroën and Fiat! https://uk.motor1.com/news/563973/plug-in-sales-europe-december/ WORLD EV SALES — TESLA MODEL 3 WINS 4TH CONSECUTIVE BEST SELLER TITLE IN RECORD YEAR The second half of 2021 brought a record fest for world EV sales, with 3 record months in the last 4 setting new sales records. December was one of them, with over 900,000 registrations. Full electric vehicles (BEVs) ended the year growing significantly faster than PHEVs — +69% year over year (YoY) versus +31% YoY. That allowed them to end the year with 71% of plugin EV sale Interestingly, though, if we look at the quarterly average, because that's the proper way to look at Tesla performances, the Model 3 ends up being below the Model Y (52,000 units for the Model Y vs. 47,000 for the Model 3). So, in reality, the Model 3 could be winning its last monthly best seller titles, as the Model Y has greater potential to grow in 2022. After years of being limited to the Tesla Model 3, the midsize category is now experiencing true inflation of models, with several models ramping up deliveries. There's the sensible BMW iX3 (7,338 registrations), passing by the flashy Ford Mustang Mach-E (6,488 registrations), the tech-friendly XPeng P5 (5,037), the minimalistic cool Polestar 2 (5,334), and let's not forget the Korean cousins Hyundai Ioniq 5 (7,294 registrations) and Kia EV6 (5,072 registrations). Added to the Tesla Model 3 & Y, there is now a little for everyone in the midsize category. In the final 2021 table, the Tesla Model 3 won its 4th consecutive Best Seller award, thanks to over half a million deliveries. https://cleantechnica.com/2022/01/30/world-ev-sales-tesla-model-3-wins-4th-consecutive-best-seller-title-in-record-year/ MUNRO TESLA MODEL S PLAID TEARDOWN BEGINS While examining the structure under the frunk, he comments that everything appears to have been engineered rather than just thrown together. The clips and trim are all easy to remove and don't fall apart — unlike what was witnessed with the Model Y. However, the Model S Plaid in question featured a spacer applied to one fender and not the other. Munro notes such alignment issues are common with cars constructed using aluminum pressed panels. Tesla is still a low-volume manufacturer, but when it comes to higher rates of production, these issues can spiral. Another annoyance included a rear window seal that just didn't fit properly, adding an excessive amount of wind noise. The seat squab itself was at a poor angle, and the backrests caused backache https://www.carscoops.com/2022/01/tesla-model-s-plaid-teardown-begins-qc-is-improved-but-there-are-still-lapses-says-engineer/ TESLA CYBERTRUCK SPOTTED PLUGGED IN TO GIGA TEXAS SUPERCHARGERS The latest Tesla Cybertruck prototype arrived at Giga Texas on Sunday, and has been driven around the factory by Elon Musk and others, possibly even Joe Rogan. With all that driving the Cybertruck's battery needed to be recharged today, and it was spotted plugged in to the Superchargers outside Giga Texas. This is the first time we have seen the Cybertruck plugged in to a Supercharger, but had suspected the charge port would be located at the rear of the truck based on recent videos and drone flyovers. https://driveteslacanada.ca/cybertruck/tesla-cybertruck-spotted-plugged-in-to-giga-texas-superchargers/ BREAKING: NON-TESLA EV SUPERCHARGING SPOTTED IN NORWAY Tesla's pilot program, which enables non-Tesla electric vehicles to use Superchargers, has reportedly spread to Norway. According to elbil24.no, non-Tesla EVs can now use some of the Tesla Superchargers (CCS2 plugs) in Norway too. various non-Tesla EVs were seen charging at the Nebbenes kro Supercharging station in Eidsvoll Municipality, north of Oslo. The video, posted by elbil24.no, shows an Audi e-tron. On today’s podcast: Arrival list at a $13bn valuation Rimac opens R&D centre in the UK Tesla Claims EPA Range Needs A Drained Battery Europe: More Than 600 Tesla Supercharging Stations The End of Tesla’s Dominance The new Normal Kona EV owners say Hyundai mishandling recall Used hybrid values slashed Heavy-duty trucking may be 'next big frontier' Show #1032 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Thursday 25th March. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. ARRIVAL LIST AT A $13BN VALUATION "Arrival, a British startup that produces zero-emission public transit vehicles, has listed on the Nasdaq with a current valuation of $13bn, making it one of the largest-ever listings of a UK tech company. The company’s founder, Russian telecoms tycoon and former deputy minister Denis Sverdlov, owned a 76% stake in Arrival at the point of IPO, according to SEC filings, making his share worth $9.8bn." says sifted.eu: "For the first five years of Arrival...Sverdlov funded the company himself, piling $450m into it. In 2020, the company raised $300m from investors Hyundai Motor, BlackRock and Vladimir Potanin, one of Russia’s richest people. It’s developing zero-emission electric vehicles for commercial use: they’re made from a composite material that the company says is lighter and cheaper than steel. Arrival says its cars can be customised to specific companies’ needs. In October last year, it signed a deal with the United Parcel Service to provide 10k vehicles and an option to buy a further 10k — a deal worth $1.2bn. Arrival will also begin trialling electric buses on public roads in the UK from this autumn in a partnership with British bus operator First Bus. Arrival said it projects being cash-flow positive by 2023 and generating a gross profit of nearly $4bn by 2024." Their philosophy is about micro factories in, or close to, major cities. They say there are 560 cities with a 1million+ population which have the potential to support a micro factory. Starting just north of London and Rock Hill, S Carolina. https://sifted.eu/articles/arrival-nasdaq-listing/ RIMAC OPENS R&D CENTRE IN THE UK "Rimac has cut the ribbon on its first R&D office in the UK as it gears up for the launch of the production version of its C_Two electric hypercar" reports Autocar: "Based in Warwick Enterprise Park, Warwickshire, the office is planned to employ 30 people by the end of 2021. However, Rimac said it could “expand significantly in the years to come” as the company progresses its product lines. The office will collaborate with Rimac’s Croatian headquarters, enabling the firm to take advantage of British engineers, whom Rimac founder and CEO Mate Rimac regards as among the best in the world." https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry-news-environment/rimac-opens-rd-centre-uk TESLA CLAIMS EPA RANGE NEEDS A DRAINED BATTERY "In response to an independent range test, Tesla has reportedly claimed that the EPA range on its vehicles can be achieved by draining the battery pack beyond the zero-mile displayed range. Last month, [Electrek] reported on Edmunds conducting independent range tests on a bunch of electric vehicles to compare them to their EPA estimates. The results showed that Tesla is using the most optimistic versions of its EPA estimated range in its advertising compared to other automakers." according to Fred at Electrek: "Now Edmunds is out with a follow-up report in which they claim that Tesla reached out to them following their test to state that they should have accounted for the “buffer” that comes after the displayed range reaches zero miles" Edmunds said: "Needless to say, Tesla was not happy with our test results, and we received a phone call. Tesla’s engineers disputed our figures. They argued that we’d underestimated their cars’ true range because our test ran to an indicated zero miles rather than to a stop. Tesla argued that even when the indicated range hits zero, there’s still a safety buffer. The engineers reckoned that if you add this buffer, the distance measured to when the battery is spent, their cars would match the EPA results. Our answer to Tesla’s dismay with our initial results is that, yes, two of the automaker’s vehicles can match the EPA’s range estimates in the Edmunds EV range test. But that’s only under specific circumstances and by driving each vehicle past zero indicated miles of range." https://electrek.co/2021/03/25/tesla-claims-epa-range-achieved-electric-cars-by-draining-battery-beyond-0-mile-range/ EUROPE: MORE THAN 600 TESLA SUPERCHARGING STATIONS "The number of Tesla Supercharging stations in Europe has recently exceeded 600 in 27 countries (with more than 6,000 individual charging stalls). On average, that's 10 stalls per station. The network has grown significantly over about eight years since Model S entered the market (initially in 2013). There were less than 20 stations as of the end of 2013. As of the end of 2014, it increased to more than 110 and then to almost 200 as of the end of 2015. At the beginning of 2020, the number of stations increased to 500 and now it's 600." says InsideEVs: "The largest station in Europe is in Norway at Nebbenes with 44 stalls. Europe is no longer the second biggest market for Superchargers because China has accelerated in 2020 and now has more than 925 stations. That's actually pretty close to the 1,125 in the U.S." https://insideevs.com/news/496754/europe-600-tesla-supercharging-stations/ THE END OF TESLA’S DOMINANCE "He doesn’t date a synth-pop star, publicly puff on blunts, or profess to want to die on Mars, but Herbert Diess is starting to look and sound an awful lot like Elon Musk. The chief executive officer of Volkswagen AG kicked off a March 15 news conference modeled after Tesla Inc.’s “Battery Day”—Diess called his “Power Day”—by declaring that there’s only one way to quickly reduce emissions from transportation: Go electric." writes Bloomberg: "EVs are shifting from what seemed like a one-man show to an extravaganza with an increasingly crowded stage. Although VW has as good a chance as anyone to share top billing with Tesla, what’s less clear is the rest of the cast. Tesla has done to the auto industry what Netflix Inc. did to cable TV, speeding the shift away from internal combustion in much the same way easy access to Breaking Bad and hundreds of other shows spurred consumers to take the scissors to their Comcast contracts." https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-24/tesla-tsla-and-elon-musk-s-dominance-is-threatened-by-volkswagen THE NEW NORMAL "Central Illinois, best known for auto insurance, corn and soybeans, finds itself hosting a startup that touts its own expertise in lithium ion battery architecture and cloud computing. The majority of new vehicles sold worldwide in 2040 are forecast to be electric, and Rivian appears set on taking a big slice of that pie." reports CNN: "Bloomington-Normal can feel the effects of Rivian's growing significance. Some real estate agents are asking potential home buyers to submit their offers just hours after open houses end, a practice local real estate agent Greg Zavitz said he hadn't previously seen in 35 years of business in the area. Hotels are filling with Rivian employees, defying the national trend of vacancies brought on by the pandemic." https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/24/cars/rivian-illinois-town/index.html KONA EV OWNERS SAY HYUNDAI MISHANDLING RECALL "Some owners of Hyundai Motor's Kona electric vehicles say the South Korean automaker is bungling a major recall with delays and poor communication, and risks losing buyers as it targets the No.3 spot in the fast-growing sector. Hyundai said last month it would replace the battery systems in some 82,000 electric vehicles globally at a cost of $900 million following fires in 15 Kona EVs." says Yahoo! Finance: "But Hyundai has yet to convey a clear plan to owners on when and how they can expect to have a potential fire hazard they are driving fixed, some of the owners have complained." https://finance.yahoo.com/news/kona-ev-owners-hyundai-mishandling-230000921.html USED HYBRID VALUES SLASHED "The pandemic’s impact on the private hire industry has severely affected second-hand hybrid car values. Non-plug-in models have traditionally been the tool of choice for the likes of Uber drivers, thanks to the reliability and suitability for town and city driving, and this generated good demand and healthy prices for used examples" says Autocar News: "Prices of petrol hybrids at three years and 60,000 miles dropped by 10.1% year on year in January. Values of used petrol hybrids fell by 16.9% during the week beginning 8 February" https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/industry-news-environment/analysis-used-hybrid-values-slashed-demand-falls-pandemic HEAVY-DUTY TRUCKING MAY BE 'NEXT BIG FRONTIER' "Transitioning all of the United States' medium- and heavy-duty trucks to zero-emissions vehicles by 2040 would lead to cumulative pollution-related savings of $485 billion by 2050, according to Jennifer Helfrich, senior manager of state policy at Ceres." says Utility Dive: "California is the national leader when it comes to electrifying transportation, though other states are following suit, according to experts. Zero-emissions vehicles are planned to make up 100% of California light-duty sales by 2035, including short-haul and drayage trucks. The state's full transition to ZEV buses and heavy-duty long-haul trucks is expected to be completed by 2045." MADE IN CHINA MODEL 3'S LEAVE FOR EUROPE NEXT TUESDAY "The first batch of Gigafactory Shanghai’s China-made Model 3 is about to begin their journey to Europe. The vehicles are reportedly en route to the port of Zeebrugge in Belgium, where they will be distributed to countries such as Germany and France." says Teslarati: "Recent reports from Chinese media have announced the shipment of thousands of Made-in-China Standard Range Plus Model 3s from Gigafactory Shanghai. As noted by Tesla owner-enthusiast @Ray4Tesla, the shipments will start next week on Tuesday, October 27. Tesla owner-enthusiast Armand Vervaeck suggested that the China-made Model 3s could be shipped by train to Europe due to the vehicles being fitted with protective wraps. Based on comments under Teslarati’s previous article, it seems that shipments by train would have an estimated arrival time of two weeks." This does point to towards Model Y coming to Europe, if demand in China allows. And Model 3 from Fremont no longer has to do the 20 day journey down the West Coast, Mexico etc, through the Panama Canal and across the Atlantic. Plus the margin on those MIC cars is much better. As a commenter notes: "Tesla can charge more for an SR+ in Europe vs China, LFP Version provides better margin compared to the US Model 3 might be battery cell constraint along with the model Y ramp. So to supply Europe, they can further diversify their cells. So I believe they bypass Chinese demand in favor of supplying Europe. Can't wait to see first European YouTube reviews about the MIC M3 build quality etc." https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-model-3-china-export-europe-start-date/ TESLA RESEARCHERS PRESENT BATTERY WITH 2 MILLION MILE LIFECYCLE "Tesla battery researchers around Jeff Dahn have presented updated test results for their battery cells. Instead of one million miles, the batteries are now expected to last 10,000 cycles and provide traction power for more than two million miles – that’s about 3.2 million kilometers." says electrive: "With “special additives”, the batteries should be able to withstand 10,000 cycles. Assuming a relatively conservative 350 kilometer range per cycle (i.e., a full charge from 0 to 100 percent), this would be 3.5 million kilometers. Whether 3.2 or 3.5 million kilometers: the one million miles or 1.6 million kilometers announced in September 2019 seem to be clearly surpassed. If the batteries were only discharged by 25 to 50 per cent of their capacity, they would show almost no degradation. This is a charge level range that many electric car drivers use in practice – the battery is rarely discharged to less than 20 per cent, on the other hand, it is rarely charged over 80 per cent." https://www.electrive.com/2020/10/19/tesla-researchers-present-battery-with-2-million-mile-lifecycle/ TESLA HAS OVER 120 OPERATIONAL MICROGRIDS "Tesla has over 120 operational microgrids around the world using its batteries and renewable energy, according to a new comment from an executive. Ever since the launch of Tesla Energy and its stationary energy storage products, Tesla started working on microgrid projects" says electrek: "Michael Snyder, director of engineering and construction, energy projects at Tesla, released the information in a Linkedin post about a new position on the microgrid team: If you like solving problems at the nexus of power systems interactions, protection coordination, system and product level controls, and DERs (Powerpacks, Megapacks, solar, and generators), check out the link below for a microgrid-focused product engineer. We have 120+ operational microgrids around the world with high impact to a variety of communities/customers. This is a unique and rewarding role." https://electrek.co/2020/10/19/tesla-120-operational-microgrids-world/ TESLA EXPANDS CHARGING IN EUROPE Tesla’s Supercharger network has rapidly expanded since the beginning of the quarter with over 250 new Supercharging stalls located all over Europe, with around 240 of these being V3 Superchargers. All our chargers are placed on well-travelled routes which allow you to explore every corner of Europe. The following Tesla Supercharging sites have been opened since July 1st 2020: Denmark: Ikast – 12 stalls Finland: Huittinen – 6 stalls (2 V2) France: Angoulême, Sisteron, Les Herbiers - 28 stalls (4 V2) Germany: Berlin EUREF Campus, Braak, Eschborn, Herzsprung, Wismar, Hilden – 72 stalls (4 V2) Iceland: Fossvogur – 4 stalls (V2) Italy: Forli – 4 stalls Netherlands: Akersloot, Apeldoorn Oost, Middelburg, Rijswijk – 40 stalls Norway: Aksdal South, Bamble – 36 stalls Portugal: Loule – 8 stalls Spain: Aranda de Duero – 4 stalls Switzerland: Bulle, Martigny – 16 stalls UK: Fort William, Hilton Park Southbound, Leeds-Whitehouse, Lifton, Manchester South, Wyboston – 42 stalls (14 V2) Across Europe there are over 5300 Supercharger stalls spread across nearly 530 locations and 29 countries in Europe. The Tesla Supercharger Network will continue to expand around the globe to enable all-electric journeys to be effortless. PORSCHE PANAMERA TURBO S E-HYBRID "Porsche has announced two new hybrid powertrains for its Panamera hatchback and Panamera Sport Turismo estate, bringing back the 4 E-Hybrid and Turbo S E-Hybrid models to the range. These join the 4S E-Hybrid that was launched when the Panamera was facelifted a few months back" writes evo.co.uk: "The Turbo S E-Hybrid reclaims its position as the most powerful Panamera derivative, now peaking at 690bhp, 9bhp more than before. The extra power is derived from the 4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine at the core of the powertrain, which on its own produces 563bhp. Despite its near 2500kg kerb weight, the Turbo S E-Hybrid will reach 62mph in 3.2sec (0.2sec quicker than the previous model) and go on to 196mph, while also being able to cruise for up to 31 miles on the electric motors alone. Show #528 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Sunday 14th July 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. We have another PRODUCER of the podcast to join the gang it’s CRAIG VLADIMIROVS HYUNDAI KIA BUILDS NATIONWIDE CHARGING NETWORK IN SOUTH KOREA "Hyundai Motor Group (Hyundai and Kia) decided to prepare the ultra-fast charging network for upcoming new models in South Korea." says InsideEVs: "Through investment of 10 billion won ($8.5 million) Hyundai-Kia intends to install roughly 100 DC fast chargers rated for 350 kW in 20-30 locations. The South Korean media reports that the network reminds it of Tesla Supercharging, although Hyundai-Kia will keep the chargers open to all other models compatible with the CCS Combo 1 inlet." https://insideevs.com/news/359565/hyundai-kia-nationwide-charging-network-south-korea/ NO COMPANY CAR TAX ON ELECTRIC VEHICLES, SAYS UK GOVERNMENT In the UK: "The Government says that company car drivers choosing a pure electric vehicle will pay no benefit-in-kind (BIK) tax in 2020/21." reports FleetNews.co.uk: "for a pure electric vehicle with zero tailpipe emissions, company car drivers will be taxed at 0%, paying no BIK tax at all. Furthermore, the zero percentage rate is also extended to company car drivers in pure electric vehicles registered prior to April 6, 2020, who were already looking forward to a much reduced rate of 2% for 2020/21." Let me explain BIK and why it's important. Take a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus. The government put a value of £42,400 on it, which is the list price before incentives. The current BIK charge is 16%, so you take 16% of the list price of £6,784. Then you apply your tax band for your income tax, and you either pay 20% tax or 40% tax in England (Scotland slightly different). Anyone earning over £50,000 pays 40% tax. So for those higher rate earners buying a Tesla Model 3, the individual had to pay 40% of £6,784, so £2,714. That for a Model 3, if you go to a Model 3 Long Range Performance, and chose that as your company car, an individual would be £6,307 a year. There are also additional costs for our National Insurance employer contributions. https://www.fleetnews.co.uk/news/fleet-industry-news/2019/07/09/no-company-car-tax-on-electric-vehicles-says-government TESLA TAKES 28% SHARE OF WESTERN EUROPE BEV MARKET IN H1 2019 "In the first half of the year, the Tesla Model 3 and Tesla brand took a solid first place in the Western Europe BEV market." according to Mark Kane at InsideEVs: "Since the introduction of the Model 3 in Europe, Tesla has become the top choice for those buying all-electric cars. Tesla's position is nowhere near the dominance seen in the U.S., but according to industry analyst Matthias Schmidt (schmidtmatthias.de), in the first half of 2019, Tesla was the #1 BEV OEM with 44,900 new registrations and 28% market share in Western Europe. 37,300 new registrations of the Model 3 allowed for an easy first place among all BEVs (and plug-ins in general)." https://insideevs.com/news/359636/tesla-28-western-europe-bev-market-h1-2019/ SERES STOPS US LAUNCH OF ELECTRIC SUV SF5 "The Chinese EV startup Seres, formerly known as SF Motors, has fired 90 employees at its Silicon Valley base as well as officially putting off the US launch of their electric SUV SF5." says a report by Electrive: "An unnamed employee said that before the cuts, around 300 people worked at the factory and that cuts affect all areas of the business, and people have been let go from “sales, marketing, IT, HR, legal, operations, and design”. The company itself was not available for comment." https://www.electrive.com/2019/07/12/seres-stops-us-launch-of-electric-suv-sf5/ HARLEY-DAVIDSON’S LIVEWIRE IS MORE ELECTRIC MOTORCYCLE THAN I’LL EVER NEED Sean O'Kane for The Verge just said: "There’s not a lot I can tell you from the 20 minutes I spent riding Harley-Davidson’s first electric motorcycle this weekend at the Formula E race in Brooklyn, New York. One thing I can tell you, though, is it’s certainly more electric motorcycle than I’d ever need. Every time I turned on to one of the long straightaways of Formula E’s Brooklyn circuit, I raked the throttle and was greeted with giddying acceleration. What sets the LiveWire apart is that acceleration almost never quits. As 50, 60, 70 miles per hour ticked by on the small digital display between the handlebars, the motorcycle never let up. If there had been more room to run, I likely would have cracked 100 miles per hour before thinking about whether I really wanted to go that fast." https://www.theverge.com/2019/7/14/20692388/harley-davidson-livewire-electric-motorcycle-test-drive QUESTION OF THE WEEK First of all, props to Mikhail Grozovski who sent me a screenshot of him asking exactly this question on Twitter. He says: "You stole my question ;-)" DAVID ALLEN The very fact that people are now asking this question demonstrates that EVs are making progress in becoming mainstream. The question doesn’t even occur to folks until they are presented with the contradictory situation of watching EV race cars hauled to a track by diesel/petrol trucks. Once the question is asked, pressure will then mount on the racing teams to replace fossil burning transport/support vehicles with EVs. Tesla ran into the same problem with its mobile service fleet, and is now phasing out the gas-powered vans with modified S/X vehicles. That said, this highlights the need for heavy electric vans, medium trucks, and of course, the Tesla semi. Leszek Grzyl Yes,we should consider what we do while we promote EVs. We should be restricting our unnecessary journeys and consider travelling by trains if we need to. Train travel across Europe needs to by simplified so that we can get to Mediterranean from UK or North countries without flying. If popularity stints are designed to improve ev awareness and involve driving ev they should continue, as they will bring lower co2 emissions as a result. RICH FOWLER Yes, these events are more important in terms of PR for EVs than the minimal detrimental effects they have on the environment in terms of CO2 emissions. I say this because these events are outliers. If these events were smack in the middle of the bell curve of EV activities, then I would say they should be restricted. But since they're uncommon, and therefore designed to attract attention to EVs, I think the harm they do can be considered an investment in getting more people interested in converting their middle of the curve day to day fossil gobblers into EVs. The only thing that could change my mind is the Fully Charged Live discussion on how tires are a fossil-based pollution nightmare. If these sorts of outlier activities generated significantly large amounts of tire-based pollution, then I might change my mind, but I'd have to see some data first. RENE SCHNEIDER The main problem about fuel burnt is, that it was questioned in several news around the formula-e approximately like „the need 200 diesel trucks to carry ..., so it is only a pseudo event about energy saving.“ Really relevant is moving the public: The review of the Formula-e in Zurich 2018 states that 160’000 visitors came; 71% with public transport, which runs nearly with 100% electricity here in Switzerland. Moving 160’000 people around is the big number, not a few 100 trucks to carry goods. Dafydd Cheung No doubt in my mind, that racing is a big advertising opportunity. The greater the number of people who are exposed to the idea of EVs, either as race vehicles or private/public transport the better. What is then also needed, are EV load carriers and that can tow, with a decent range. Only then will the EV racers be transported to venues by other EVs. DAVID NYE Yes we should burn some fossil fuels where necessary for anything which actively promotes EV’s, as they have a long way to go to become the rule rather than the exception. The day will come when the vast majority of people drive sustainable vehicles running from clean power, but we still have a very long way to go to get there, and a lot of people with whom we need to get the message across with respect to EV’s and sustainable transport in general. IAN SEAR EVs should be making as much noise (not literally) and doing as many fun stunts as possible to get a buzz going, I feel we are at the Gladwellian tipping point for EV technology with the mainstream media reporting quite a few positive EV news stories and the much criticised BBC having some very fair EV articles DEREK LYON Anything that helps sell “the electric solution” is fair game. Some people will only care about coolness, speed or economics, (IE not saving the world.) What is great is “the electric solution” answers cool/fun & economics. People just don’t know that yet. Showing off those qualities in a race & building overpowered e-cars is awesome and speeds acceptance. Creating some sort of purity rules are short sighted and will slow electric adoption. Show #472 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Wednesday 15th May 2019. It’s Martyn Lee here and I’ve been through every EV story I could find today to save you time. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they’ve built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It’s a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. ONE YEAR INTO ELECTRIFY AMERICA There's a great, long-read CNBC article all about Electrify America which I recommend today. "Almost a year to the day after opening its first charging station, Electrify America says it is rolling out the country's fastest-growing network of fast chargers. Funded by $2 billion from Volkswagen's 2016 diesel emissions settlement, it has a goal of building hundreds of stations and putting nearly 2,000 chargers in place by the end of this year." says CNBC: "Setting up a nationwide infrastructure is the next big challenge, according to many analysts. An August study by McKinsey & Co. projected it will cost as much as $50 billion to ensure public charging stations are as easily accessible as gas stations in three key markets — the U.S., Europe and China. The U.S. alone is expected to require an investment of as much as $11 billion, McKinsey estimated." But why replicate the gas station model? Shouldn't we charge at home and work? "Electrify America's new Level 3 systems will almost all provide a minimum of 150 kilowatts at 400 volts and many will push even further, taking that up to 250 kW and 800 volts. That's far more than most of the current crop of electric cars can handle. The new Porsche Taycan will be the first to be able to make full use of the technology, which can add about 20 miles of range per minute. To make things easier and speed up the charging process, Electrify America this week is rolling out a new smartphone app that can be used to locate its charging stations and see how long it will take for someone already hooked up to finish charging." https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2019/05/10/vws-2-billion-penalty-for-diesel-scam-builds-ev-charging-network-across-us.html PORSCHE TAYCAN'S INTERIOR SEEN FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SPY PHOTOS "In these two spy images taken from the Taycan Forum, you can see that the cabin of the first all-electric Porsche is almost the same as what the Mission E concept had in its debut three years ago." says Motor1.com today: "The resemblance starts at the dashboard layout, which is crowned by a horizontal digital display that flanks across the dashboard. Moreover, the touchscreen control panel by the center console has been carried over from the concept." https://www.motor1.com/news/349137/porsche-taycan-interior-spy-shots/ AUDI NETWORKS WITH TRAFFIC LIGHTS IN EUROPE Audi is introducing the vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) service “Traffic Light Information” to Europe. From July Audi will network new models with the traffic lights in Ingolstadt/Germany; further European cities will follow from 2020 onwards. Then cars will be more likely to catch a “green wave” in the city: Audi drivers will see in the cockpit what speed is required to reach the next traffic light on green. If that is not possible within the permitted speed limit, there will be a countdown to the next green phase. Driving in cities will thus become more relaxed and efficient. In the USA, Audi customers have already been using this service since late 2016. Audi is the first manufacturer worldwide to network its series-production models with traffic lights in cities. In the USA, Audi customers have been using the “Time-to-Green” function for two years: if the driver will reach the lights on red, a countdown in the Audi virtual cockpit or head-up display counts the seconds to the next green phase. This service is now available at more than 5,000 intersections in the USA, for example in cities including Denver, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Portland and Washington D.C. In the US capital alone, about 1,000 intersections are linked to the Traffic Light Information function. Since February Audi has offered a further function in North America. The purpose of this is especially to enable driving on the “green wave”. “Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory” (GLOSA) shows to the driver in the ideal speed for reaching the next traffic light on green. Audi etron will get this function. SK INNOVATION TO INVEST $490 MLN IN 2ND CHINESE CAR BATTERY PLANT "South Korea’s SK Innovation said on Wednesday that it plans to invest 579.9 billion won ($488.30 million) to build its second China factory for electric vehicle batteries, in a bet that China will open up its market to Korean battery makers." reports Reuters today: "The latecomer to the battery market is aggressively expanding its production capacity globally, starting to build new factories in Hungary, China and the United States since last year with a total investment of 5 trillion won. SK Innovation said its second China factory aims to meet rising orders for EV batteries globally, without elaborating on its Chinese partner, the site and capacity of the proposed plant." https://uk.reuters.com/article/sk-innovation-china-batteries/sk-innovation-to-invest-490-mln-in-2nd-chinese-car-battery-plant-idUKL4N22R03B SCANIA TO PURCHASE BATTERIES FROM NORTHVOLT "Scania, the Swedish truck and bus manufacturer (part of Volkswagen Group), signed a battery supply deal with Northvolt, according to what Chief Executive Henrik Henriksson told Reuters." according to InsideEVs today: "Northvolt, founded by former Tesla executive Peter Carlsson, plans to build a battery gigafactory in Skellefteå in Sweden, which will cost some €3 billion ($3.36 billion). The first step will be raising €1.5 billion ($1.68 billion) split equally between debt and equity. There is also the potential for a second factory in Germany. According to the article, Scania (and many other known companies) is in talks with Northvolt about equity investment. Northvolt already raised €80-100 million. The list of investors includes Scania, ABB, Vestas, Vattenfall, Siemens and BMW. Various customers are currently in talks about the volume of batteries: Atlas Copco, Husqvarna, Vestas, Volvo Cars, Jaguar Land Rover, Daimler, BMW." VOLVO TAPS ASIA'S LG CHEM, CATL FOR LONG-TERM BATTERY SUPPLIES "Swedish carmaker Volvo said on Wednesday it had signed long-term battery supply deals with Asian firms LG Chem and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL), as it pushes its EV target of 50 percent of sales by 2025." as reported by the New York Times: "The agreements follow a series of pacts between Asia-based battery companies and global carmakers, who are planning a $300 billion (232 billion pounds) surge in spending on electric vehicle (EV) technology over the decade." https://www.nytimes.com/reuters/2019/05/15/business/15reuters-lg-chem-volvo.html AUDI GOES AFTER TESLA SUPERCHARGER V3: ‘SUSTAINED POWER BEATS TOP POWER’ "With the launch of Supercharger V3, Tesla pushed the industry to higher charge rates, but Audi argues that it doesn’t mean much if they can’t sustain it for a decent period of time. Charging speed is seen as one of the main features that need to be improved in order to facilitate the widespread adoption of electric vehicles." writes Fred at Electrek: "When combining its new Supercharger V3 and the Model 3, Tesla pushed the charge rate to 250 kW, which is a new high for electric vehicles currently in production.
