And a Dallas man, wanted for homicide, is caught in another state.  But first…     PC News   Former President Jimmy Carter honored his late wife, Rosalynn Carter, at a national tribute service in Atlanta yesterday.   Mrs. Carter, the lifelong companion of the 39th President, passed away at 96 on Nov. 19 after 77 years of marriage.   The invite-only event at Glenn Memorial Church boasted a high-profile guest list, including President Joe Biden, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Second Gentleman Douglas Emhoff.   Dignitaries like Former President Bill Clinton, Melania Trump, Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, and local figures Governor Brian Kemp and Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens paid their respects.   Her funeral will take place in Plains today.   This from 11 Alive.     PC News     Authorities in Tennessee successfully apprehended a suspect from Dallas.   Loudon County Sheriff's Office employed a combination of  phone ping and FLOC camera techniques to track down Brandon Howard to the 300 block of Get Good Hollow Road in Loudon.   Swift action by SWAT and Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers resulted in Howard's capture after a brief chase.   The 37-year-old suspect, wanted in Dallas for homicide, is now held at the Loudon County Detention Center awaiting extradition.   This from the Loudon County Sheriff's Office.     PC News In a move to tackle the potential winter surge, the U.S. government is making it easier for Americans to access COVID-19 tests from the comfort of their homes. Those who missed the September distribution can order up to eight free at-home virus tests at COVIDtests.gov. The U.S. Postal Service will deliver them at no cost. The distribution coincides with the onset of flu season and reports of increased RSV cases in various regions. Though COVID-19 hospitalizations saw a recent rise, overall numbers have stabilized, thanks to vaccinations and previous infections. The release also precedes the first winter without mandatory insurance coverage for at-home tests, which now average $11. This from 11 Alive. Coach John Mosley can still remember the day his life changed forever. Gang members fired bullets outside his Los Angeles high school in a drive-by shooting, and Mosley was on his way to get revenge. But as he was about to jump in his friend's car, he asked himself, “What am I doing?” Soon afterwards, two words took him down a different path: “Basketball tryouts.” Mosley came late to the game, but his stellar point guard play earned him minutes at East LA College (ELAC), The Master's College (now University) and with pro teams in Brazil and Australia. Next, he went back to guide the Mustangs on the sidelines with Coach Keith Oates and then took the assistant coach position at Cal State Bakersfield with Keith Brown. His other alma mater, ELAC, came calling, and Mosley took his first head coaching job, believing he'd just be there for a year before accepting a D1 offer. Yet 11 seasons later, he feels called to remain at ELAC to develop troubled young men as players and people. Just before the pandemic, his squad got international airtime in season 1 of Last Chance U Basketball. In season 2, Coach Mosley and his assistants Ken Hunter and Rob Robinson guided a new crew led by Bryan Penn-Johnson, Dez Washington, Shemar Washington and Demetrius "DC" Calip II to D1 and D2 scholarships, and ELAC won the conference title.  In this episode, Coach Mosley shares:How faith and basketball saved his lifeWhy growing up in a tough neighborhood prepared him to lead young menWhen he almost turned down NetflixHow he and his kids survived a terrible car wreckWhy he continues to turn down offers from prestigious programs to serve at ELACHow his father passing unexpectedly galvanized his missionWhy impacting lives is even more important than winning games or trophiesLearn more from Coach Mosley at his website, https://coachjohnmosley.com/ and on Instagram @coachjohnmosley

Is it a distraction trying to fully understand where the impacts of Brexit begins and ends, where the impacts of Covid begins and ends, where the impacts of the cost of living crisis begins and ends, where the impacts of the war in Ukraine begins and ends, where the impacts of the climate crisis begins and ends? Quite a conundrum, which arose from today's listener question, sent in by Billy, in Saugus, Massachusetts, USA. “I spent some time in the UK recently, and like many countries at the moment, the wheels seem to be coming off many aspects of your country and systems. Do you think this is caused by Brexit, Covid, Cost Of Living crisis, the climate crisis, or something else? Not sure where one issue begins and another ends currently, do you guys?”  Your co-hosts Stuart and William feel it's potentially a mixture of Brexit, Covid, the Cost Of Living crisis, the climate crisis and much more, as Billy concisely states in his question. Though Covid could probably be more impactful than Brexit in some instances for example. Brexit is though a contributing factor in the UK, as we chose to do it ourselves. They suggest maybe we should all do some research to try and fathom where all these things begin and end, whether it is Brexit, Covid, Cost Of Living crisis, the war in Ukraine, or the climate crisis. We may not find any definitive conclusions, but it might widen our shared perspective a bit more. How many times do you say Yes, Maybe or No? You know you can run but you cannot hide. Though raging storms come and you tossed and driven aside, He knows. Perhaps you like me have run and kept on running from somebody or something, perhaps a calling of sorts but like runaway Jonah you have come to realize that you can run or hide from people and other things but you cannot run and hide from God....simply because He Knows. So if God instructed you, he will guide you, lead you, separate you from what or who can harm you. As Jonah was disobedient running away from an Instruction, at times that's you or I. Though Covid caught your attention and mine, but through it all, you got a glimpse of His Glory Divine....simply because He knows. So when the Lord speaks heed His voice and be sheltered under His wings for He knows. May this be for someone who feels like giving up today. Hopeless Helpless and Hungry...He Knows.

BrownTown chops it up about WORK. Building on previous episodes about labor, unions, and trying to do liberatory work within capitalism, BrownTown contextualizes recent inflation hikes, the state of "hustle culture," and the seven-decade growth of corporate profits on the backs of the working class. While the majority of adults WORK, the propaganda that you must "earn" the right to live and be productive constantly in order to have any value has normalized harmful policies, language, and attitudes towards one another. Though COVID, the great resignation, Striketober, and other large phenomena have chipped the armor of capitalist logics and apparatuses, how do we better utilize that energy to sustain better material conditions forever and for always? She didn't see the representation of neurodiversity in books, particularly picture books, while growing up which sparked the idea behind the first book. After teaching for a couple of years, Abigail decided to pursue a dream of living abroad. Though Covid changed those plans, it pushed her to start writing and publishing children's books. The first book in the series, "D is for Darcy Not Dyslexia" is partly based on her life growing up with dyslexia and is published by The Passage Press which was co-created by Abigail and Cecilia, the illustrator of The Empower Empathy Early Series. 10% of the profits from their book sales go to the Inclusive Children's Book Fund which provides free inclusive books to teachers. The ICB Fund includes books from other authors and publishers. The use of face masks in classrooms made “no significant difference” in COVID-19 infection rates, according to a new study. A cohort of researchers from several universities and hospitals in Spain came to the conclusion by analyzing COVID-19 transmission rates, age, and the mandated use of face masks in classrooms across the region of Catalonia. The study – “Unravelling the Role of the Mandatory use of Face Covering Masks for the Control of SARS-CoV-2 in Schools: a Quasi-Experimental Study Nested in a Population-Based Cohort in Catalonia (Spain)” – compiled data from 1,907 schools with a total of 599,314 pupils during the first term of the 2021 academic year. It was included in August’s edition of the peer-reviewed journal Archives of Disease in Childhood, which is a part of the British Medical Journal (BMJ) Group. Though COVID-19 variants such as Omicron occurred outside of the timeframe of the study, researchers maintain it is “unlikely that the effectiveness of the mask mandate measure will increase with a more transmissible variant.” “We analysed routinely collected health data to compare the incidence of SARS-CoV-2, secondary attack rates and the effective reproductive number among school children, comparing those without mandatory face covering masks (FCM) and those with FCM during the first term of the school year 2021–2022, to assess the effect of FCM mandates on SARS-CoV-2 transmission within schools,” explains a summary of the work. Researchers focused on comparing children in the last year of preschool (P5) and the first year of primary education, as the younger group had no face mask mandate, whereas the older group did. “The main findings of the study show no significant differences for children in the last grade of preschool (P5) and the first year of primary education in COVID-19 transmission indicators during the study period, despite their difference in FCM mandate and the strong age dependency of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in schools,” explained researchers. “In conclusion, FCM mandates in schools showed no significant differences in terms of transmission. Conversely, we found that age is a key component explaining transmission in children,” summarized researchers. The Spanish case study follows additional studies demonstrating the failed efficacy of face masks to prevent the spread of COVID-19, even exacerbating the spread of the virus in certain demographics. https://www.theepochtimes.com/study-americans-own-more-than-415-million-firearms_4737834.html?utm_source=partner&utm_campaign=BonginoReport Study: Americans Own More Than 415 Million Firearms Americans now own more than 415 million firearms, according to Georgetown professor William English. This was a key finding of the National Firearms Survey that was conducted last year by Denver-based research firm Centiment at the request of English, a professor at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University. English is a political economist interested in ethics, education, and public policy. The survey, which is part of a larger book project, is reportedly the largest ever undertaken regarding U.S. gun owners. The survey was administered to about 54,000 U.S. residents aged 18 and older, focusing on 16,708 gun owners who were provided with in-depth questions about their ownership and use of firearms, including defensive uses. The purpose of the survey was to “shed some light from a social-scientific view on the reality of how guns are used and owned in America today,” English said during a Sept. 11 podcast produced by The Reload, a publication focused on the policies and politics surrounding firearms. “And the attempt was to make it the largest survey of gun owners yet done, particularly so that we can get statistically informative information in all 50 states. Probably the last survey of this scope was done back in 1994 … but it’s now more than a quarter century old,” he said. English teased the findings of the survey in a May 18 summary on an academic website called Social Science Research Network but updated the summary on Sept. 13 to add the 415 million figure for gun ownership. Because the U.S. Census Bureau now estimates the U.S. population to be 333 million people, the 415 million figure means that there are now about 1.25 firearms for every person living in the United States. Of those 415 million firearms, Americans own about 171 million handguns, 146 million rifles, and 98 million shotguns, according to the update. About 39 million individuals, or 48 percent of gun owners, have owned magazines capable of holding more than 10 rounds. Some jurisdictions regulate magazine capacity. The newly released information helps to put facts that English previously released from the study into a broader context. The study found that the United States has an overall rate of adult firearm ownership of 31.9 percent, which suggests that more than 81.4 million Americans aged 18 years and older own firearms. The average gun owner owns about five firearms, and handguns are the most common type of firearm owned, the summary states. Among gun owners, 57.8 percent are male and 42.2 percent are female. About 34.3 percent of whites own firearms, compared to 28.3 percent of Hispanics, 25.4 percent of blacks, and 19.4 percent of Asians, according to the summary. Nearly a third of gun owners, or 31.1 percent, reported in the survey that they have used a gun to defend themselves or their property, often more than once. The report summary estimated that firearms are used defensively by their owners in about 1.67 million incidents each year. Handguns are used in 65.9 percent of defensive incidents, although in most such incidents no shot was fired. About a quarter (25.2 percent) of defensive incidents took place inside the gun owner’s home, and a little more than half (53.9 percent) happened outside their home but on their property. Almost one in 10 (9.1 percent) of defensive gun uses took place in public and about one out of 30 (3.2 percent) took place at work, according to the summary. The report comes after a landmark Supreme Court ruling on June 23 finding for the first time that there’s a constitutional right to carry firearms in public for self-defense. The court also found that gun regulations must be deeply rooted in U.S. history if they’re to survive constitutional scrutiny, prompting a raft of new lawsuits across the country challenging gun control measures. Applications for gun permits in states that require them have been rising following the court decision. President Joe Biden is pushing for a federal ban on so-called assault weapons after Congress approved new gun control measures in June, including financial incentives to encourage the enactment of state-level red-flag gun confiscation laws. The research paper also comes as major credit card companies, at the behest of gun control activists, are implementing what critics characterize as backdoor gun control. The International Organization for Standardization recently announced that one of its subcommittees had decided to create a new merchant category code for firearms, which were previously under the general merchandise category. Critics say the policy change will make it easier for governments both to track and discourage firearms purchases and could lay the groundwork for a national gun registry. That is not a typo. Rather than devoting federal resources to improving our national infrastructure, Biden is wasting millions to address the problem of “racist roads.” What makes a road racist? I’m just the messenger here, but according to MSNBC, so-called “racist roads” being targeted by Biden were “designed to facilitate white flight and deprive black communities of housing and commercial opportunities.” Fellow white dude Pete Buttigieg, who occasionally makes appearances pretending to be the Transportation Secretary, confirmed that $104.6 million in federal funds from last year’s bipartisan infrastructure bill will be used to dismantle Interstate 375 in Detroit. “This stretch of I-375 cuts like a gash through the neighborhood, one of many examples I have seen in communities across the country where a piece of infrastructure has become a barrier,” Buttigieg told the Associated Press. “With these funds, we’re now partnering with the state and the community to transform it into a road that will connect rather than divide.” https://www.foxnews.com/media/don-lemon-roasted-royal-expert-answer-britain-paying-reparations-ready And now this! But, then again, mix passionate fandom with eleventy bottles of beer, and ill-advised decisions will ensue. Such was the case at the Texas-UTSA game on Saturday when a fan attempted to jump into the pit with the University of Texas’s mascot, Bevo. The mascot’s handlers tried to wave the fan off but to no avail. Thankfully, a Texas DPS officer intervened and prevented the fan from getting himself killed. Mental health impacts millions of people and is one of those things people can avoid dealing with their entire lives depending on the culture and part of society they were exposed to. Some cultures view seeking therapy and professional help as a sign of weakness and embarrassment.  Among black communities, mental health is only recently being openly discussed. According to NAMI.org, 63% of black people believe that mental health is a sign of weakness, which leads to shame and not having the conversations or seeking the help they need.  Over 11 million adults are estimated to have had serious suicidal thoughts (source)  More recently, there has been the normalization of mental and emotional health in the workplace. Though Covid took us through one of the worst periods in modern global history, it was also part of the change in mental health conversations between employers and employees.  Today's episode is dedicated to a dear friend, Dansby White. Like many people lost to suicide, his sudden and unexpected departure serves as a wake-up call for all of us to check in with our friends, family, and loved ones, especially the ones that appear to be fine.  Beverly is giving you 8 tips to maintain mental and emotional health during your job search. Episode 3 brings us Jennifer Taylor and Sarah Goletz from the Indiana Area Health Education Center (AHEC) to talk about ripple effect mapping (REM). We knew very little about REM, so we sat like schoolchildren at the proverbial feet of Jennifer and Sarah as they patiently walked us through the basics. If you too are unfamiliar with REM, it's a method that combines elements of appreciative inquiry, mind mapping, and participatory evaluation to ascertain how participants and others involved in or affected by a program describe the program's outcomes and impact. It can also be used to identify a program's unintended consequences (both positive and negative) and inform recommendations. This page on the University of Minnesota Extension School's website has some great resources that help explain how it all works. At a high level, it involves gathering 12 to 20 stakeholders in a room, guiding them through a process where they talk in pairs about elements of the program they appreciate or find impactful, and then facilitating a discussion wherein participants share out their ideas while facilitators organize and map these ideas on a large sheet of paper, whiteboard, or projector at the front of the room. The result is a cool map that visually depicts a program's impacts (see example here). Jennifer and Sarah stumbled upon REM in their own work at AHEC, and now they not only use REM in their own research, they also happily teach others how to do so. Though COVID has put a temporary damper on some of this work, they were able to host a workshop in Fall 2020 and are happy to serve as evangelists for the method in any way they can. If you have questions, hit them up!

Bo Burnham's Inside (2021) is one of the most unique things you'll see on Netflix. It's an angsty and existential one-man musical comedy about isolation. In Edible-Alpha® podcast #92, Tera chats with Henry Aschauer, co-founder of Forage Kombucha and Forage Kitchen in Madison, Wisconsin. What began as a single healthy fast-casual restaurant on State Street has expanded to include two more local eateries plus a budding beverage brand now sold in nearly 800 retail doors across 18 states. In launching Forage Kitchen in 2015, Henry and his partners hoped it would be the first of many locations. After some slight menu tweaking, the restaurant became a hit, attracting a broad clientele with its fresh-made salads and grain bowls—and proving that the concept worked. This paved the way to open a second outpost in March 2019 and a third in September 2019. Originally, Forage Kitchen crafted its own juices and lemonades but brought in kombucha from elsewhere. “Maybe being young and naïve, we began to tinker with the idea of making our own, not knowing full well what that entails,” Henry explains. Once his team developed a HACCP plan and got the proper regulatory clearance, they began brewing and bottling kombucha in the Forage Kitchen basement and selling it to customers in January 2017. Just like the restaurant, the fermented tea beverages were also a hit. Plus, producing and serving them onsite allowed them to trial different flavors in a real-life setting, giving them excellent feedback. They secured a distribution partner and established retail sales outside of Forage Kitchen. To build capacity and grow the brand, Henry and partners looked to move kombucha production into a dedicated facility. Additionally, intent on offering a convenient, approachable and affordable—yet still high-quality—kombucha, they switched from bottles to cans. They contemplated the co-packer route, which is notoriously difficult for small beverages brands, especially those involving fermentation, but no suitable partner emerged. Ultimately, they found production space locally and began self-manufacturing in October 2018. From there, Forage Kombucha grew tremendously, having expanded capacity and added a few more regional distributors to widen its territory beyond Wisconsin. After banner kombucha and restaurant sales in 2019, Henry expected sustained growth in 2020—but a certain virus had other plans. Though COVID-19 pandemic hit the restaurant industry hard and made it tough for beverage brands to land new retail accounts, both Forage Kitchen and Forage Kombucha managed to grow. Now that the pandemic is winding down, Henry says more doors are opening on the retail front. Currently, Forage Kombucha is in the process of gaining USDA Organic certification, which should broaden its appeal further. Henry and Tera talk about the valuable interplay between the restaurants and kombucha business, in terms of consumer recognition, brand proposition and cash flow management. He hopes the future includes an even broader reach, additional Forage Kitchen locations and more brand-aligned beverage launches.

Anyone who has taken care of someone really sick at home knows how difficult and stressful it is. Yet care at home is what most people with serious illness want. Too often, they don't know that's possible and don't know where to turn. I wish more people caring for a critically ill person knew, that rather than asking advice of doctors or friends or searching for advice online, they only had to make ONE phone call to get immediate world class 'in home' help regardless of where they live in the US and regardless of their ability to pay. Seriously.  And as serious illnesses go, heart disease and heart failure are at the top of the list. Heart disease is the silent pandemic that affects every American family. Unlike Covid it is never going to end. 1 in 3 Americans have heart disease and 1 in 4 eventually die of it. My own fabulous father was one of those people. He passed away soon after I returned home from college from heart failure at the age of 55. I remember the pain my Mother and brothers and I went through watching him suffer. Heart failure takes hearts and breaks a lot of hearts like mine. Though Covid has consumed out attention this past year you should know that heart failure is still the number one cause of death and the leading cause of hospitalization. "Tens of thousands of heart failure patients wind up dying alone in a hospital room or ICU", says Steve Cone, Chief of Communications, Marketing and Philanthropy of Capital Caring Health. "Many of those hospital stays could have been prevented and many of those patients could have lived longer and better lives through palliative /advanced illness and hospice care delivered directly to where they live, be it their home or a family members home or in an assisted living facility. In-home care, so patients don't have to be rushed to the hospital and caregivers don't have to call 911 and people don't have to end up dying by themselves." Capital Caring Health one of the largest not-for-profit hospice and advanced illness care providers in the nation are also a leading provider of in home advanced cardiac care. Their highly respected President and CEO Tom Koutsoumpas, came up with this national advanced cardiac home care initiative and got 70+ other not-for-profit hospice and advanced illness providers who offer at-home care in communities nationwide to join him. The organization is called 'National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation' and Tom serves as  it's CEO. Together they have made a national toll free hotline available to help families find a care provider near them, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.Families in need of hospice or care for an advanced illness can call to find a care provider near them. HOTLINE: 1-844-GET-NPHI (1-844-438-6744) (NPHI) National Partnership for Healthcare and Hospice Innovation The joint mission prioritizes patients and not profits. Thus, regardless of ability to pay — they turn no patient and their family away.  Ever. NPHI and the American Heart Association jointly released a Free Advanced Cardiac Care Patient and Caregiver Handbook. They  believe every family in America should have a copy and provide the handbook at no cost on their respective websites. People in the heart business with heart! Doing my part to share this important information and also share the enlightening conversation I had with Steve Cone of Capital Caring Health.   Please share this information with anyone you may know who needs it. Especially hard-hit are racial minorities and people of all races with low incomes and a high school education or less. The report, released March 2 by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, provides the most comprehensive look at premature deaths in the United States to date. A picture is emerging of how the interplay of known and often preventable risk factors, including rising rates of opioid overdoses and obesity, is contributing to declining U.S. life expectancy (SN: 12/21/17). Since the 1990s, drug overdoses, alcohol abuse, suicides and obesity-related conditions have resulted in the deaths of nearly 6.7 million U.S. adults ages 25 to 64, a 12-member committee finds. Mortality rates from those causes tended to accelerate in the 2010s. Aftershocks of the sharp economic recession in 2008 may have contributed to that development, the report suggests. “This is a public health crisis that isn't getting better, and in some ways is getting worse,” Kathleen Mullan Harris, a sociologist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and chair of the committee, said during a March 2 webinar to discuss the report. The report shows that declining life expectancy among racial minorities and working-class white people before the pandemic “set the stage for the challenges we saw during COVID-19,” says epidemiologist Sandro Galea, dean of Boston University School of Public Health. Galea assisted in the peer review of the committee's analysis. People with underlying health conditions — often the very conditions driving the trend of premature deaths — have been especially vulnerable during the pandemic. For instance, studies have found that obesity creates a substantial risk for hospitalization and death following a coronavirus infection (SN: 4/22/20). And federal data cited in the report reinforce that the virus has not affected all groups equally. From January 1, 2020, to January 9, 2021, 4.3 percent of all deaths among working-age white residents involved COVID-19. That figure reached 10 percent for Black residents, 21.4 percent for Hispanics, 14.2 percent for Native American groups, 13 percent for Asians and 16.1 percent for Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders. Though COVID-19 is currently a leading cause of death, what prompted the new report was the fact that U.S. life expectancy had dropped for three years in row starting in 2015. Harris' team analyzed data on mortality of working-age people in the United States from 1990 through 2017, as well as reviewing research on social trends related to disease and death. Cardiometabolic diseases, including diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, high blood pressure caused by heart disease, narrowed heart arteries and stroke, led to more than 4.8 million premature deaths, a trend that accelerated after 2010. While the mortality rate from these causes for Black people varied over the study period, at times dipping, it consistently remained twice that of white and Hispanic people, the report found. Researchers screened 789 players who had tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 infections for signs of myocarditis or pericarditis — inflammation of the heart or its surrounding sac. Only five of those athletes (0.6 percent) had evidence of the inflammatory heart conditions and were restricted from play for at least three months to give their hearts time to heal, researchers report March 4 in JAMA Cardiology. Those results contrast with findings from previous studies of college athletes, which suggested that as many as 15 percent of young athletes may have developed the potentially deadly heart conditions after a coronavirus infection --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thes3podcast/message

When people compare COVID-19 to the flu, it's often to minimize the impact of COVID. However, as a health threat, the flu is nothing to sneeze at. As Dr. Fauci testified before Congress, “The seasonal flu has a mortality of 0.1%, whereas coronavirus is 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu.” Though COVID is much more dangerous, tens of thousands of people still succumb to the flu each year. In this podcast, Sherah Bateman, Lead Infection Preventionist at MarinHealth, breaks down the differences between the two infections. What are the most common symptoms of each, and how long does it take to develop symptoms? How long are you contagious? Can masking help protect us—and others-- from both illnesses? Get the answers to these questions and more.

Advent, it is the time of expectant waiting. Every year during the four Sundays before we celebrate the Nativity of Jesus on Christmas, we have a season of waiting and preparation. It is a time of elaborate preparation in many ways. Because we are creatures with senses and bodies, our imaginations strain to take it all in. We decorate, we cook, we gather, we ponder, we pray, and we go to all this excess because of the God of excess we serve. We respond to the over-the-top love of God for sinners like us with elaborate ritual. Of course, like the culture around us, this can be just a diversion from real life, but if we are mindful our hearts and minds are taken up in rapturous wonder that the infinite would become finite, the eternal would become temporal, that the immortal would wrap himself in mortality—for what? To reconcile sinners to himself—no wonder we gild the lily! Every year we seek to look at the birth narratives of Jesus from a different angle. This year we are looking at it from the perspective of angels. Angels don't show up much in the Bible and, when they do, it is a terrifying event, usually to bring some great message from God. So, of course, there are a lot of angels in the birth narratives of Jesus. This week we start with an angelic visit from one of just two angels in the Bible that have names given to them. He appears to an aged country parish priest who is too old to have children, serving a once in a lifetime tenure in the temple in Jerusalem. And with this encounter, God begins to break into history in a new and glorious way. The message he brings changes everything! I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving and got a good start on this season of feasting. Though COVID may have dampened the festivities and made our scattered tables somewhat smaller, nothing can totally kill this season if you know the God of the Incarnation. So, join us Sunday, live and in person or via livestream, as once again we begin Advent. The church is gilded and decked for the season. As we will talk about Sunday, may we know afresh the certainty of God's promises—especially in a time of pandemic. Blessings, Jim

Jumanne Mtambalike in a Tanzanian entrepreneur and technologist. Jumanne is best known for championing stable innovation ecosystems in Africa. He is a founder of Sahara Ventures, the parent company of Sahara Sparks event, Africa's largest event on innovation and technology entrepreneurship, and Sahara Accelerator. Jumanne started Sahara Ventures in 2015 as a group of companies with the specific focus of helping start-ups and entrepreneurs to identify potential opportunities and partners to build sustainable businesses, accelerate them by providing technical assistance and help them to connect with potential sponsors and donors. Sahara ventures include three separate businesses, Sahara events, which hosts business events, the accelerator program that helps businesses get investor ready and a consulting arm centered around investment, technology, and innovation. Jumanne talks about the difficulty generating accurate post-program data from accelerator program participants and the reticence of African entrepreneurs to disclose when they have raised follow-on funding. This adds a level of challenge on the part of incubators and accelerators to accurately communicate the evidence of the impact of their efforts. Jumanne also shares his thoughts on the impact of COVID-19 on entrepreneurs and SMEs in Africa and how Sahara Ventures is helping SMEs to capitalize on the digital economy. Though COVID is a crisis, there are opportunities for African entrepreneurs to adopt technologies to manage and even thrive through the crisis and beyond. He also talks about the missing gap in scale and growth funding for African entrepreneurs where there are smaller funds to start-up seed funding and then the available funding jumps to $1M+ and investors will complain that entrepreneurs are not investment ready but the issue is that there is a gap in the flow of funding which contributes to the problem. Investors are more interested in investing in SMEs that are established with a track record to minimize their risks. They are less interested in start-ups with a novel idea. Fintech however leverages more investor money with the success of M-pesa. We talked about localized African investors and Angel Investors. Jumanne touched on the need for capacity building for local angel investors for them to understand how start-ups work. They are more accustomed to investing in more traditional assets such as land and real estate where they can understand how they will make money. There are other issues around the weak participation of local investors connected to weak regulations that bar local investor support for local ventures looking to scale and grow. Examples of African venture funds include: Ghana Venture Capital Trust Fund, East Africa Venture Capital Association You can check out Sahara Ventures on their website and follow them on LinkedIn and you can read Jumanne's articles on entrepreneurship and the African ecosystem on Medium.
