Have you ever dreamed of being famous? Imagined what it would be like to have all your dreams come true? Recognition, adoration, basking in the limelight. Sounds wonderful, doesn't it? But dig a little deeper and you'll find that “The Road To Fame” is a prickly path, filled with twists & turns, backstabbing & betrayals. Experience a captivating journey into fame as the performers of Letters Aloud bring to life personal and illuminating letters from renowned figures like Stephen King, Dorothy Parker, Vincent Van Gogh, Emily Dickinson, Bruce Lee, Oprah Winfrey, and Tom Hanks, and explore the steep cost and evolving nature of what it means to be “famous” from those who have traversed its path. A riotously funny, movingly poignant, and thought-provoking experience brought to life by a gifted ensemble of professional actors, with live musical accompaniment, and a dynamic slide show, “Before They Were Famous” is a show that leaves audiences with smiles on their faces and much to discuss on their drive home. Letters Aloud is a performing arts company that brings to life intimate, thought-provoking, and often humorous stories hidden within private letters of the past. Their performances are a unique combination of literature, theatre, and live music that celebrates the beauty of the written word and the human experience. (If you take NPR's Selected Shorts, cross it with The Moth podcast and add just a pinch of the old A Prairie Home Companion, you pretty much have their show…except, of course, with letters.) They believe that letters are more than just pieces of paper; they are windows into the past, bridges between people, and tools for empathy and connection. Reading them aloud in front of an audience makes for a truly unique and powerful collective experience. Whether you're a fan of literature, history, or simply good storytelling, we invite you to join us on a journey through the written word. Letters Aloud is a celebration of the human spirit and we look forward to sharing it with you. “As I get older, I get bolder.” This week, Hillary takes political consultant Luis Miranda, Jr's quip from our last episode and runs with it. She's talking to three “women of a certain age” who have defied expectations, and stereotypes, to do great things throughout their long lives. First, we hear from U.S. Representative Maxine Waters, who has represented southern Los Angeles for over 30 years, earning a reputation as a stalwart champion for progressive values who speaks her mind. Next up is actor Glenda Jackson, who, between winning two Academy Awards and a Tony Award, served in the British parliament for 23 years. We finish the hour with a conversation with U.S. Senator Mazie Hirono from Hawaii, who has raised her voice many times, speaking out against family separation, in defense of the Affordable Care Act, and, most recently, as an advocate for anti-hate crime legislation.  Bios U.S. Representative Maxine Waters has served as a congresswoman for southern Los Angeles County since January 1991. She is the first woman and first African American to chair the House Financial Services Committee. She's also a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and a member and past chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. British actor Glenda Jackson has received two Academy Awards, two Primetime Emmy Awards, and a Tony Award. In 1992, she left the stage to run for office, winning election to the British Parliament and holding office for the next 23 years. In 2016, at age 80, Glenda returned to acting with award-winning performances in Shakespeare's King Lear, Edward Albee's Three Tall Women, and the BBC drama Elizabeth Is Missing. Senator Mazie Hirono is the first Asian American woman elected to the U.S. Senate, and the only currently serving immigrant. Mazie sits on the Armed Services, Judiciary, Energy & Natural Resources, Small Business and Entrepreneurship, and Veterans' Affairs Committees, and championed the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act to support better reporting and tracking of hate crimes perpetrated against the AAPI community. The bill passed both chambers with bipartisan support and was signed into law on May 20th, 2021. Mazie's memoir, Heart of Fire: An Immigrant Daughter's Story, comes out in paperback in April. Inspiring award-winning performances from your talent: Crossover applications to business leadership from the theatrical development process with Charles Newell, Artistic Director of Court Theatre in Chicago A CEO’s Virtual Mentor Episode 24   Welcome to Episode 24, Season 5, of the Leadership Lyceum: A CEO's Virtual Mentor®. I'm joined in the program today by Charles Newell, the Marilyn F. Vitale Artistic Director of the renowned and critically acclaimed Court Theatre in Chicago. This interview was recorded in the summer of 2019 as the Court Theatre's production of the play, The Adventures of Augie March, had completed its record-breaking performance run. We had intended to publish this episode early this year in 2020, but COVID hit and it seemed a little bold to put this out at the early stage of the pandemic. The world had other pressing items that deserved attention. But now, in the middle of the holiday season, we've been without live theater and entertainment for nine months, we thought this interview might be not only informative, but also soothing at this stage of the pandemic.   This interview is timeless and gets deep into a theatrical production's creative process as seen through the mind's eye of the director. In general, we, as an audience of entertainment, be it sports or the performing arts, are often spoiled with the perfection and professionalism of the finished product. But what is involved or required from a leadership perspective to develop and burnish the performance into the form to which we are also accustomed? What goes on in the business of theater has crossover applications to all business leaders. We'll cover a wide range of topics in today's program. We'll outline the organizational form of the Court Theatre, including its governance, funding and management structure. But the majority of our time will be spent stepping through the phases of the creation of a production from script selection to closing night.   Program Guide A CEO’s Virtual Mentor Episode 24 Inspiring award-winning performances from your talent with Charles Newell, Artistic Director of Court Theatre in Chicago 0:00     Introduction to the program and Charles Newell, Artistic Director of the Court Theatre in Chicago 3:20     Court Theatre’s history, governance structure, funding sources and unique structure with the University of Chicago. 5:09     Achieving high caliber of performances on a smaller budget than peers theater companies in Chicago 7:25     Unique mission and social-societal outcomes of Court Theatre in the realm of national theater. 10:39   Break 1 11:19   Phase 1 of the Theatrical Development Process: Finding and developing a script. 17:11   Break 2 17:27   Phase 2 of the Theatrical Development Process: Developing the look and feel of the production. If it weren't for her singular acting abilities, Alison Pill would be best known for her boisterous laugh. (That is only kinda a joke.) The chameleonic actress–Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Midnight in Paris, The Newsroom–has been at it since the age of 10. And so we begin on set, unpacking her life as a child actor, and how she managed to find a voice as she grew up on (and off) screen. We also discuss her transcendent work on stage (from Blackbird to Three Tall Women), rejecting precocity, the film that almost made her quit acting, the trials and tribulations of dating in your 20s, approaching #MeToo with a politics of grace, and why Thornton Wilder has irrevocably changed her life. There's also laughing. Lots and lots of laughing.

The great Glenda Jackson is back on the stage. In 1992, the Emmy and two-time Academy Award winner was elected to Parliament. She spent the next 23 years in Britain’s House of Commons. Since returning to theater in 2015, she’s played King Lear on London’s West End and won a Tony Award for her performance in Edward Albee’s "Three Tall Women." Now, she’s playing Lear again in a new production, directed by Sam Gold, on Broadway. We were thrilled to get Glenda Jackson into the studio to talk about playing a king, opportunities for women in the arts, and the intricacies of her performance in the new production of "King Lear." Jackson is interviewed by Barbara Bogaev. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast series. Published May 14, 2019. © Folger Shakespeare Library. All rights reserved. This podcast episode, “What Have You Performed?”, was produced by Richard Paul. Garland Scott is the associate producer. It was edited by Gail Kern Paster. Ben Lauer is the web producer. Technical help came from Robert Auld, Helena DeGroot, Deb Stathopulos, and Larry Josephson at The Radio Foundation studios in New York.

Note: this interview was recorded before Roseanne's tweet and the subsequent cancellation of the show. Alec says he has never enjoyed being on-stage with a fellow actor more than when he performed with Laurie Metcalf in Arthur Miller's All My Sons.  Her genius is on full display in the new production of Albee's Three Tall Women, currently on Broadway, for which she just won a Tony.  On Here's the Thing, Metcalf and Alec discuss her evolution into an accomplished actor from her days as an aspiring German-English translator who'd never considered a career in the arts.  She recounts the early days of Steppenwolf, the legendary Chicago theater company she founded with John Malkovich, Gary Sinise, whom she met while she was still in college.  We learn what it was like working with Greta Gerwig on Lady Bird -- and toiling through the grueling "publicity circus train you have to get on for three months" when you're in a hit movie.  And finally, Metcalf shares stories from both sets of Roseanne: her insecurity about the show's staying-power in 1989, and the political dynamic on set for the reboot alongside her Trump-supporting friend.

Kurt Andersen speaks with Laurie Metcalf, the actor who is striking gold everywhere: she was nominated for an Oscar for her role as the mother in “Lady Bird,” stars in the Broadway play “Three Tall Women,” and, with most of the rest of the original cast, has returned to the reboot of “Roseanne” on ABC. Wes Montgomery is a legend of jazz guitar, and much of that notoriety first came from a 1960 album, “The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery.” Somewhere between theater and installation art, “Flight” tells a story of child migrants entirely through miniature models. Kurt talks with Jamie Harrison, co-creator of the piece. And Yesika Salgado breaks down her poem “What I Know,” a love letter to her home of Los Angeles. Learn more about your ad choices. Daryl Roth is an American ten time Tony Award-winning producer who has produced over 90 productions on and off Broadway. She is the only producer of seven Pulitzer Prize-winning plays: Bruce Norris’ Clybourne Park (Tony Award); Tracy Letts’ August: Osage County (Tony Award); Nilo Cruz’s Anna in the Tropics; David Auburn’s Proof (Tony Award); Margaret Edson’s Wit; Paula Vogel’s How I Learned to Drive; and Edward Albee’s Three Tall Women. Other Broadway shows she has produced include Nick & Nora (1991), Desire Under the Elms (2009), A Little Night Music (2009), Driving Miss Daisy (2010), Annie (revival, 2012), Kinky Boots (2013, Tony Award), This Is Our Youth (2014), and An Act of God (2015). Off-Broadway productions include Tea at Five (2003), Esoterica (2006), The Judy Show (2011), and The Velveteen Rabbit (2012). Daryl took a break from being one of the most prolific Producers around and chatted with me about her perspective on Broadway, Off Broadway and much more, including . . . How listening to a voice inside her that she never heard before got her to produce her very first show.  And how you should listen to the same one. Why aren’t there more women lead Producers?  Is there still an old Broadway boys’ club? And what can we do about it? How Kinky Boots was born. What she looks for when picking a producing partner (listen to this podcast to hear from one of those partners himself). Why after all this Broadway success, she still remains committed to Off Broadway.   Keep up with me: @KenDavenportBway www.theproducersperspective.com Learn more about your ad choices.
