A flight attendant on a Southwest Airlines plane lost two teeth over the weekend after allegedly being punched by a passenger who had "repeatedly ignored standard inflight instructions," according to an airline spokesman. The Port of San Diego Harbor Police Department charged Vyvianna Quinonez, 28, with battery causing serious bodily injury in the incident, which was caught on video and later went viral. The incident sparked widespread outrage, but for flight attendants it was just the latest example of an increase in travelers becoming disorderly and in some cases turning violent against those tasked with enforcing federal and airline rules. Southwest Airlines said Friday it would delay its return to serving alcohol to passengers "given the recent uptick in industry-wide incidents of passenger disruptions inflight." "We realize this decision may be disappointing for some Customers, but we feel this is the right decision at this time in the interest of the Safety and comfort of all Customers and Crew onboard," the airline said in an email. The FAA is keeping track of attacks The number of unruly passengers on U.S flights has taken off in 2021, with many more people boarding planes as the pandemic eases. According to the Federal Aviation Administration, from Jan. 1 through May 24, there were roughly 2,500 reports of unruly behavior by passengers, including about 1,900 reports of people contravening the federal mask mandate, which is still in place. The FAA has not always tracked unruly passenger reports but began keeping a tally last year as it started to observe a surge in complaints, specifically around noncompliance with the face-covering mandate, said FAA spokesperson Ian Gregor. "Based on our experience, we can say with confidence that the number of reports we've received during the past several months are significantly higher than the numbers we've seen in the past," Gregor said in an email. The FAA does, however, keep data on the number of "unruly passenger" violations it has identified. Through May 25, the agency has already recorded 394 potential violations, while in all of 2019 and 2020 there were just 146 and 183 violations, respectively. Flight attendant unions say the hostility is unprecedented Sara Nelson, president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, which represents nearly 50,000 flight attendants across 17 airlines, said the level of hostility toward flight attendants is unprecedented. "We've never before seen aggression and violence on our planes like we have in the past five months," Nelson said in a statement. "The constant combative attitude over wearing masks is exhausting and sometimes horrific for the people who have been on the front lines of this pandemic for over a year." Nelson said the strained situation is causing some flight attendants to quit. The surge in unruly passenger complaints is also getting the attention of federal officials, who have warned travelers to be on their best behavior in airports and on planes or risk facing the consequences. "Let me be clear in underscoring something," Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said during a Tuesday press conference. "It is a federal mandate that one must wear a mask in an airport, in the modes of public transportation, on the airplane itself — and we will not tolerate behavior that violates the law." Just this week the FAA announced that it was proposing civil penalties as high as $15,000 against five more passengers for violations that included allegedly assaulting and yelling at flight attendants. In an open letter, Lyn Montgomery, president of TWU Local 556, the union for Southwest flight attendants, suggested the airline be more consistent in banning unruly passengers and called for an increase in the number of federal air marshals on planes. From The Points Guy: There has been a succession of news stories lately about unruly passengers causing trouble in the air during this recent travel surge. U.S. airlines are taking precautionary measures as they’ve witnessed a recent uptick in disorderly passenger behavior. American Airlines is the latest airline to ban alcohol sales in its economy cabin this summer. According to an internal memo sent to flight attendants on Saturday and first obtained by CNN, economy passengers flying with the airline will have to wait until at least Sept. 13 before they can order a mid-flight drink. This comes at the heels of the Southwest Airlines announcement that they too are pausing alcohol sales after a flight attendant was physically assaulted in-flight by an inebriated passenger. In the memo, vice president of flight service Brady Byrnes stated the reasoning behind the airline’s decision: “Over the past week we’ve seen some of these stressors create deeply disturbing situations on board aircraft. Let me be clear: American Airlines will not tolerate assault or mistreatment of our crews. While we appreciate that customers and crewmembers are eager to return to ‘normal,’ we will move cautiously and deliberately when restoring pre-COVID practices.” The Sept. 13 date coincides with the federal face mask requirement for airplanes, airports and other modes of transportation that currently runs through Sept. 13. American was planning to resume full main cabin beverage service, including alcoholic beverage options, as well as its buy-on-board food program later in the summer. However, those plans have now been put on hold. For now, pre-departure beverage service remains suspended in premium cabins. In the main cabin on flights under 250 miles, non-alcoholic beverage service is available upon request. On flights of 250+ miles, non-alcoholic beverage service with be offered with a snack. “Alcohol will continue to be offered in premium cabins (First/Business class),” according to the memo — but only inflight. American notes that “Pre-departure beverage service continues to remain paused.” When asked whether or not it had plans to change its alcohol sales policy, Delta Air Lines said in a statement to TPG there are “no changes” to on board services including beer, wine and cocktails for purchase in the main cabin “on most domestic flights.” The spokesperson continued, “Nothing is more important than the safety of our flight crews and customers. And as part of our values-led culture, respect and civility among all are key components of the Delta experience for our customers and people.” TPG also reached out to United Airlines for comment and will update this post with additional information.

With two sons playing sports, Kellie and Allen have seen a lot of cringe-worthy behavior among some parents at the games. Over the years Ahtoosa Dale sent in multiple submissions to be on What Should I Read Next, each one reflecting her ever-evolving reading taste. Olivyah Bowens two pregnancies and births were very different. With her first child, her circumstances didn't allow for her to prepare or truly connect to her pregnancy. Understanding the impact that it had on her birth, as she found out she was pregnant with her second child Olivyah became a sponge, soaking up all the information she could find. She expressed that the gathering of information was transformative for her, even leading her to become a doula. It was wonderful to explore with Olivyah some aspects of parenthood preparation that sometimes go without focus. The mission behind her support of families and what she shares is the role of the mind-body connection. We currently live in a space where medical culture isn't valuing the power this connection possesses — realizing that it is essential that we discuss the role food and nutrition play in our pregnancy, birth and postpartum. That the most crucial preparation we do for birth starts in the mind, accepting and releasing the fear that we incapable of sitting in our strength. Her Holistic Path began when Olivyah started posting intentionally on Instagram as a way to document her journey of holistic freedom. It has now shifted into a shared community space for other women doing the same!In honor of Mother's Day, Olivayh will be highlighting the issue of Mommy Shaming. Using this to challenge us to help put an end to mommy shaming and create a space where we can share our journeys without being attacked or attacking others. Through May, she is discussing different aspects of motherhood and posing questions encouraging the community to answer. If you would like to connect Olivyah, gather support or join the #noshame challenge head to Her Holistic Path for all the information.Resources:Her Holistic Path | Instagram accountInclusive-tee | #noshame challenge t-shirt

This episode celebrates the 100th anniversary of the most influential design school of the twentieth century, the Bauhaus, and Connecticut’s connection to it. Connecticut Explored’s Assistant Publisher Mary Donohue and conceptual artist, photographer and frequent Connecticut Explored contributor Bob Gregson talk about pioneering Modern artists Anni and Josef Albers, who escaped Nazi Germany in the 1930s and made New Haven their home in 1950. The story behind this episode started with the high-profile heist in 1991 of a stained-glass window from the nineteenth century mausoleum of a New London industrialist. Tiffany, best known for his brilliant innovations in glass, had deep Connecticut roots. A new permanent exhibition about his work, including 100 fine- and decorative-arts objects, is now on view at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London. Join host Mary Donohue and curator Tanya Pohrt and museum director Sam Quigley to discover more about Tiffany’s career, his family ties to New London, and his life-long pursuit of beauty. It’s Wednesday 13th June 2018 and this is your EV News Daily. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening! Wherever you're listening around the world, a very warm welcome from London, UK. Here is today’s news about electric cars and the future of transport. My name is Martyn Lee and I go through every EV article online so you don’t have to. TESLA LAYS OFF 9% OF EMPLOYEES Edited Highlights… We are conducting a comprehensive organizational restructuring across our whole company. Tesla has grown and evolved rapidly over the past several years, which has resulted in some duplication of roles. We have made the difficult decision to let go of approximately 9% of our colleagues across the company. No production associates were included, so this will not … Model 3 production. This week, we are informing those whose roles are impacted by this action. We made these decisions by evaluating the criticality of each position, whether certain jobs could be done more efficiently and productively, and by assessing the specific skills and abilities of each individual in the company. We have decided not to renew our residential sales agreement with Home Depot in order to focus our efforts on selling solar power in Tesla stores and online. I would like to thank everyone who is departing Tesla for their hard work over the years. Tesla is providing significant salary and stock vesting (proportionate to length of service) to those we are letting go. Tesla will still continue to hire outstanding talent in critical roles…there is still a significant need for additional production personnel. We are a small company in one of the toughest and most competitive industries on Earth. Yet, despite our tiny size, Tesla has already played a major role in moving the auto industry towards sustainable electric transport and moving the energy industry towards sustainable power generation and storage. We must continue to drive that forward for the good of the world. Thoughts – Spare a thought for those involved, less of the ‘trim the fat’ comments online please! Tesla has grown significantly with the acquisition of SolarCity In the last year has grown by 10% too. Some say, when you hire quickly you have to fire quickly. Hard on morale and remaining employees DAIMLER ORDERED TO RECALL NEARLY 774,000 DIESELS Here's a short follow up to yesterday’s story on the show about a potential Daimler recall. I was careful to say let's give them the benefit of the doubt. That didn't last long! Mercedes-Benz Vito commercial van, C220d sedan, and GLC220d vehicles sold in Europe are all affected by a diesel recall involving 774,000 vehicles in total. Up to five control devices were reportedly found but there's an interesting case of them being legal. Something my U.S. listeners find interesting, VW were fined for using so-called 'cheat devices' and there have been criminal trials. But here in Europe, legally, they did nothing wrong. And i should point out Daimler have probably done nothing wrong. You see, because we didn't think anyone would actually do what they've done, Europe doesn't have a specific law to break. I guess we assumed no company would be as brazen to try and game the system, bend the moral rules if you like, rather than break them. Whatever the situation, it creates more bad headlines for diesel, and accelerates the adoption of EVs. In many ways we should look for a silver lining in all this and be grateful for how #dieselgate moved EVs up the priorities of lawmakers. ALMOST 7% OF BMW SALES ARE ELECTRIFIED Staying in Germany but good news for their rival, BMW, where almost 7% of all their sales are now electrified. "Electrified vehicles accounted for nearly 7% of all BMW and MINI models sold in the US in the first five months of the year and more than 7% of BMW and MINI sales in the UK" according to Green Car Congress: "In some markets, electrified vehicles already account for more than half of all BMW and MINI sales. Examples here are Norway (4,125 / +5.8%) and Malaysia (2,313 / +37.9%). The BMW Group said that it remains well on target to achieve its stated aim of selling more than 140,000 electrified vehicles in 2018." I mentioned on the show recently that BMW was investing in its Leipzeig plant, where the i3 and new i3s are made, to increase production by more than 50% by the end of this year. PORSCHE LAUNCHES DIGITAL CHARGING SERVICE Porsche want to make different logins for your various charge providers a thing of the past with one unified app. The service searches for suitable charging stations and uses centrally stored data to handle the payment process – across multiple countries and currencies. Information about the location and availability of charging stations, as well as the cost of charging a vehicle, are available in real time via the app. At the charging pedestal, the user identifies themselves either using a QR code via the app or with their “Porsche ID card”, which the user receives free of charge after registering for the service. The charging service is currently available in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium and Finland. The service will gradually expand to include other countries from the end of 2018. The app is available on all mobile devices with iOS or Android operating systems and can be downloaded now. The service is in principle open to all drivers of hybrid or electric vehicles; its use is not limited to Porsche vehicles. https://newsroom.porsche.com/en/company/porsche-charging-service-electric-vehicles-plug-in-digital-online-platform-app-innovative-15607.html NEW JERSEY INVESTS $400 MILLION IN EV INFRASTRUCTURE AND STORAGE Charged EV's has more good news for those who think EV infrastructure is lacking: "New Jersey’s Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG), the state’s largest utility, has revealed plans to invest $300 million in smart EV infrastructure, along with $100 million in utility-scale energy storage projects and $2.5 billion in energy efficiency measures. The company will file the plan with the state Board of Public Utilities later this year." CHINA MAY SALES Last year, Chinese customers purchased nearly 600,000 EVs out of a total EV's sold of just over a million worldwide. That took the total number over 3 million of EV's on the road. And last month in May, China showed no appetite for slowing down. Sales of electric and gasoline-electric hybrids rose 126 percent over a year earlier. Through May, sales of electrics and hybrids rose 142 percent to 328,000. At this rate, Chinese buyers will purchase over one million EV's this year. VAUXHALL ECORSA Vauxhall, or Opel depending on where you're listening to this, have a new electric car release date and design revealed in a leaked picture. "Vauxhall has confirmed that it will be building a new electric car called eCorsa. The car manufacturer announced the name for the new EV today alongside plans to introduce a new version of the standard combustion-engine Corsa." reports the Express: "From an image leaked of what appears to be the new electric Corsa, the car will launch with a bold new design It retains the overall shape of the standard car and looks about the same size but has an extensively updated front end. This includes a completely reimagined bumper, shorter but taller bonnet, and redesigned grille. As the car does not need a traditional grille to cool the engine it features a smooth curve with the Vauxhall badge fixed in the centre of it instead." No word yet on battery or motor specs, or indeed pricing. KIA SOUL GOES ELECTRIC FOR EUROPE Matthias Schmidt tweeted that #Kia's Soul will become a BEV only model in Europe. According to @AIDNewsletter data, 5.4k of the 12.1k sold in the region last year were pure electric. Of which 3k were registered in Germany and then likely exported to Norway as part of 3k Soul EV Norwegian used imports last year. NEW LG CHEM ON-BOARD CHARGERS UP TO 11 KW I've said before I'm a big fan of Pedro Lima at Push EV's, who doesn't blog a lot but always writes insightful articles. Now he's turned his attention to LG Chem which makes batteries, motors, inverters and now on-board chargers. "In Europe, 3-phase on-board chargers will soon become standard and LG Chem acknowledges it by making the 11 kW variant available from the start." SWITZERLAND TO GET EUROPE’S LARGEST ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING HUB As for where you can charge your car, if you've ever been frustrated by turning up to find all the bays full, maybe you need a trip to Switzerland. A new innovation centre will feature 280 charging points for electric vehicles including 60 superchargers. Energy requirements for the hub were expected to hit 20,000 megawatt hours a year within 10 years, equivalent to the power needs of some 5,000 households. This energy will be fully supplied by local power sources including solar energy, hydropower and wood fuel. UK GOVERNMENT INVESTS IN EV CHARGING A new pioneering technology to ensure a next generation of safer, high-powered electric car batteries can be charged by drivers in ultra-fast time is just one of 12 innovation projects to receive the green light from the government’s Faraday Battery Challenge. The PowerDrive Line project being led by Southampton-based company Ilika is focusing on sold state battery cell development, in particular how to manufacture at scale in the UK and how to build in ultra-fast charging technology of less than 25 minutes for a vehicle as is seen in some current battery systems. In total £22 million grants are being rewarded to consortia across the UK as part of the latest round of funding through the Faraday Battery Challenge, part of the government’s Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. CITY OF LONDON TRIALS UK’S FIRST ALL-ELECTRIC REFUSE COLLECTION VEHICLE The final story comes via Waste Management World, my favourite Waste Management website. I used to have prefer Waste Management Digest but it was rubbish. A trial of the UK’s first fully-electric waste collection truck has begun. The City of London explained that the trial will last for two months in the Smithfield area, and that the vehicle will also be trialled in two other UK cities later this year. I’d love to spread the word about electric cars so, if you can, share this somebody who might be interested. Through May and Jay let your spirit evolve with our first episode covering Digimon Frontier! Jay remembers how Digimon can be, May is upset about gender and literal plot holes. We compare Frontier with Appmon, Jay has a new name for Kouji, and May realises a secret about Junpei.Plus a special, probably incorrect Japanese lesson with May!Linkdump: http://lostintranslationmon.co.vu/post/155830037897/ep85Screenshots of the WeekMay: Is this a pigeon? At the farthest western edge of Spain, where it meets the sea and looks to the setting sun over the Atlantic this desolate landscape is formed by the constant wind and waves. It is a harsh land, this tip of Galicia, where the most valued natural resource is the sea. And on this westernmost point, Finisterre, also known as the coast of death because of a long history of shipwrecks, perches one of the most moving pieces of modern architecture, a cemetery for sailors and fishermen, by architect Cesar Portela. Through May 1, 2006, at the Museum of Modern Art in New York there is a new exhibit of modern Spanish architecture. For more information, visit www.moma.org. And visit www.tedwells.com.
