Welcome to the daily304 – your window into Wonderful, Almost Heaven, West Virginia. Today is Friday, Nov. 29, 2024. Christmas at the Fair returns to the State Fairgrounds, showcasing the sights and sounds of the holidays…Plum Orchard Lake gets some major upgrades…and The History Project details the time when West Virginia had four governors at once…on today's daily304. #1 – From WV DAILY NEWS – Christmas at the Fair returns on Dec. 5 for the fifth season at the State Fairgrounds in Lewisburg. This year, Christmas at the Fair will once again allow patrons to drive through and, on special nights, walk the property while enjoying the sights and sounds of the holidays. There is no cost, but monetary donations are accepted. The event runs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays, as well as Monday, Dec. 23 and Tuesday, Dec. 24. GH Concessions will again have hot chocolate, coffee, funnel cakes, and deep-fried Oreos available for purchase. Read more: https://wvdn.com/148831/ #2 – From WVNS-TV – Thanks to the efforts of the local community, Plum Orchard Lake is a little closer to its former glory today than it was just a few months ago. Responding to requests from the community, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources made some upgrades to the lake and wildlife management area in Fayette County. Mark Scott, assistant chief of fish management for WVDNR Wildlife Resources, detailed some of the improvements made. Updates include the purchase of three new floating docks, resurfacing the fishing pier, repaving sections of the road and adding a new roof on the firing range. A part-time hire also has been brought on to help maintain the area. Plum Orchard Lake is one of the top producers of trophy-sized largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie and channel catfish in West Virginia. Read more: https://www.wvnstv.com/news/local-news/plum-orchard-lake-gets-needed-updates/ #3 – From WV EXPLORER – Think there's too much government? As complex as politics get in West Virginia, there was a time in the late 1800s when the Mountain State had four governors at one time. During that strange election year, 1888, two gubernatorial candidates pulled in a like number of votes. Nathan Goff, Jr., appeared to be the winner, though Aretas Brooks Fleming contested the vote, and both took the oath of office. Then, former governor Emmanuel Willis Wilson declined to vacate the office until the matter was settled. At the same time, Senate President Robert Carr came forth with the valid claim that the state constitution required the president to fill any gubernatorial vacancy. The matter wasn't sorted out for two confusing years. Check out the story in WV Explorer to find out which one was finally sworn in as the eighth governor of West Virginia! Today's show has two big stories, focused on the city of Detroit. The City has a new food truck ordinance. Detroit has lacked guidelines in this area for about a decade, limiting that industry. Cities around the world have been using this as a way to grow not only entrepreneurship but access to food in underserved areas of town. District six Councilmember Raquel Casteñeda Lopez - the author of the ordinance - joins us to talk about it. And second: It looks like that plan to save the historic Dairy Cattle Building at the State Fairgrounds and turn it into a transit center is in real jeopardy. I'll talk to Detroit's chief operating officer Hakim Berry about what the administration plans next, whichever way city council votes Tuesday on the proposal. I'll also talk to consultant for D4 and preservation supporter Francis Grunow about what's in the deal and the compromise it took to get here.

Walk-ins for those 16 years of age and older are now accepted at community vaccination sites in Bloomington at the Mall of America, St. Paul at Roy Wilkins Auditorium, Lino Lakes and Oakdale. Walk-ins for those 18 and over are being accepted in Mankato, Duluth, Rochester and St. Cloud. Walz says, since Minnesotans under 18 need to receive consent from a parent or guardian, the state is encouraging parents, guardians and families to walk in and get vaccinated together. The federally-supported State Fairgrounds is not currently accepting walk-in appointments. The increased availability of vaccine appointments comes as the state prepares to end capacity restrictions later this month, and double down on the vaccine push. Here’s Walz in a recent press conference. 2:07 WALZ: Back in March and April of last year, I said our only vaccine was social distancing and mitigation. That’s no longer true. We rank near the top for testing, fewest in cases and fewest in deaths. So, again: Walk-ins for those 16 years of age and older are now accepted at community vaccination sites in Bloomington at the Mall of America, St. Paul at Roy Wilkins Auditorium, Lino Lakes and Oakdale. Walk-ins for those 18 and over are being accepted in Mankato, Duluth, Rochester and St. Cloud. Minnesotans can continue to make Community Vaccination Program appointments ahead of time by visiting vaccineconnector.mn.gov. I’m Cole Premo.
WCCO TV NEWS AM HEADLINES for May 1 2021 Here are your news headlines from WCCO 4 news. I'm Jennifer Mayerle. Police are investigating the shooting of an 11 year old boy in North Minneapolis. They say several rounds were fired into a car with a child inside at 35th and Morgan Avenue North. He is in the hospital now after surgery last night and at last check he was in critical condition. Police are trying to find out who's behind the shooting and why. If you're still looking to get a covid-19 vaccine, you could head to the State Fairgrounds. The site is part of a vaccination effort by the Minnesota Health Department. Through May 4th, anyone 16 or older can just walk in or make an appointment for a free shot. If you like to schedule a time we have information at wcco.com slash links. Today the NFL draft wraps up with a final four rounds. They seem to show the Vikings are looking to the future at the quarterback position. They picked Kellen Mond with their first of 4 pics in the third round. He finished his career as the school's all-time career leader in passing yards, touchdowns and total offense. ESPN says Mond has excellent arm strength but his accuracy needs work. After Mond the Vikings added a linebacker from North Carolina, Ohio State guard Wyatt Davis another position of need and a defensive end from Pittsburgh. The team still has six more picks today. Script: Boozhoo, aaniin, I’m Cole Premo, here’s your Daily Update. Eligible Minnesotans now have the ability to book appointments at Minnesota’s community vaccination locations directly and at their own convenience, Gov. Tim Walz says. Minnesotans can use the Vaccine Connector tool to directly schedule appointments at the sites. If appointments are full, there’s an option to get notified when appointments free up. You can find the vaccine connector tool at vaccineconnector.mn.gov. These community vaccination sites are located around the state… locations include St. Paul, Bloomington, Oakdale, Mankato, Duluth, Rochester, Lino Lakes and St. Cloud. There’s also a federally-supported community vaccination site at the State Fairgrounds that is serving residents of socially vulnerable zip codes around the Twin Cities. Direct scheduling comes as the state has administered more than 4 million doses to nearly 2.5 million Minnesotansl since vaccinations began in late 2020. More than 56% of Minnesotans 16 years of age and older and 85% of adults 65 years of age and up have received at least one dose. In other news, the state will again be administering the Johnson and Johnson vaccine. Federal officials recently lifted the pause on the vaccine after a very small number of people developed blood clots after receiving the dose. Of the 8 million doses of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine already administered in the United States, there were 15 cases with blood clots discovered. Health experts say the risks from getting COVID-19 -- including getting blood clots due to the virus -- are higher than the rare risk associated with the vaccine. A safety warning will be handed out at vaccine sites. I’m Cole Premo.
DRG Media Group news and farm director Jody Heemstra chatted with South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (April 2, 2021) about this year's legislative session. Among the topics covered are: having $300+ million in one-time federal dollars to spend creation and funding of Freedom Scholarships funding increases for Medicaid providers, education and state employees the merger of the state departments of Agriculture and Environment and Natural Resources approval to build the Dakota Events CompleX (the DEX) on the State Fairgrounds in Huron special session to be called in late May or early June. Legislators will decide how to allocate the money coming to the state from Pres. Biden's economic stimulus plan. Speaker of the House Spencer Gosch has the power/authority to decide if legislators will also work out implementation of medical marijuana and if legislators will act on/pass into law Gov. Noem's executive orders restricting transgender girls/women athletes for competing in girls' K-12 or college level sports in South Dakota.
Top state officials and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, also known as FEMA, have announced that Minnesota will be home to one of the newest locations of a federally-run mass vaccination site. Gov. Tim Walz says the vaccination site comes due to the state’s request for a fully-supplied mass vaccination site to further strengthen the state’s vaccine push. The site will be located at the Minnesota State fairgrounds in Falcon Heights. Over eight weeks, this site will receive 168,000 vaccine doses, a combination of Pfizer’s and Johnson and Johnson’s vaccine. These doses are in addition to the state’s current allocation of vaccine doses. Vaccinations will begin at the fairgrounds on April 14 and will be available for those living in the certain zip codes near the fairgrounds. The zip codes have been highlighted by the CDC as having the highest Social Vulnerability Index. They are within Ramsey and Hennepin County and are listed at mn.gov. The site will be by appointment only. Minnesotans who live within these zip codes are encouraged to sign up for the vaccine connector tool. Information on directly booking appointments through a call center will be shared soon. There will be no cost for vaccination, nor will Minnesotans need to provide an ID or medical insurance. Meanwhile, COVID-19 community coordinators continue efforts to get vaccine information and other resources to the state’s diverse communities, including help with transportation, housing and language barriers during the pandemic.
FEMA will be taking over the vaccine site at the State Fairgrounds, MLB's All Star Game may be moving to Coors Field, your weather and more.
To mark the start of the new season for the Indiana Pacers , we will time travel more than 50 years back to explore the history that led up to their debut game against the Kentucky Colonels in the Coliseum at the State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis. The new team was part of an upstart professional league, the colorful American Basketball Association (ABA), and before any of the players had even scored a point, much civic, social and sports history already had been made. Two previous pro basketball teams based in Indianapolis had died. One of them, the Indianapolis Olympians, went down in scandal. Efforts at putting together the Pacers team had met a variety of challenges. Unsuccessful attempts had been made to woo household names in Indiana - including former high school basketball sensations Oscar Robertson and identical twins Tom and Dick Van Arsdale - to be part of the Pacers organization. And some of the African-American players who had been signed to the team encountered challenges finding housing in the Hoosier capital due to the racial discrimination that was unfortunately common at the time. To explore the rich history of the early era of the Pacers - including the years immediately following the team's first game in 1967 - Nelson is joined in studio by veteran sports journalist Mark Montieth in this encore of a show originally broadcast in 2017. As a boy growing up in Indy, Mark listened to the debut Pacers game on the radio. He is the author of Reborn: The Pacers and the Return of Pro Basketball to Indianapolis (Cardinal Publishing Group). In the early 1960s, Mark writes, the Hoosier capital was growing, "yet it had no national sports identity beyond the Indianapolis 500." Civic and business leaders wanted to change that. The result was a team that won three national championships in the ABA, which eventually merged with the National Basketball Association (NBA). As a sportswriter at The Indianapolis Star, Mark Montieth covered the Pacers for 12 of the team's NBA seasons. Early games in the ABA often were raucous, and fighting among the players was common. Several of the early Pacers were regarded as wild characters, including fan favorites Bob Netolicky and Mel Daniels. The starting salaries of early Pacers players? According to Reborn, one aspiring Pacer signed a contract for $10,000 (that would be about $78,000 in 2020), with the possibility of a $2,000 bonus. The ABA was distinctive for its red, white and blue basketball and the introduction to the pro game of the 3-point shot. "The Pacers were born and raised in a league and an era unlike any other in the history of professional sports," Mark writes in Reborn. The future of the team and of the league were considered so uncertain that Bobby "Slick" Leonard (the former high school basketball star from Terre Haute who later coached the Pacers to the national championships) was so wary of giving up a secure job as a salesman for class rings that he didn't initially seek the coaching opportunity. Some early players were essentially being offered second chances to achieve hoops glory. In high school and college, Netolicky was "more motivated to have fun than to play basketball" and had exotic pets such as an ocelot and a boa constrictor, according to Reborn. His eventual teammate Roger Brown had taken a factory job on the night shift after his links to a gambler ended opportunities as a player in college and with the NBA. Other Pacers history facts: Although Reborn indicates that it remains unclear who originally suggested "Pacers" as the team's name, initial announcements referenced the harness horse racetrack at the Fairgrounds near the Pacers' home court at the Coliseum (a pacer is a type of racehorse). Initial reports also referred to the Indy 500, which features a pace car. The team's colors, blue and gold, have remained the same for 50 years and are a tribute to the state's official colors - as seen, for example, on the state flag. Seven of the 12 players on the starting roster were African American. "That amounted to a bold statement in 1967," Mark writes in Reborn. "Most NBA teams were adhering to an unspoken color barrier that kept rosters half-white at the bare minimum. Even the New York Knicks and the Los Angeles Lakers, representing the nation's largest and most cosmopolitan cities, conformed."
The $400 million worth or so of development happening at the State Fairgrounds site in Detroit with the new amazon distribution center has turned a lot of heads. The project promises to create as many as 2,000 jobs at the amazon facility; not to mention the developments nearby on the same parcel. But it’s not without some questions and pushback. The part we’ll talk about today, since the fairgrounds is a site with generations of history. Should the long-standing buildings like the coliseum and the bandshell be preserved somehow, instead of demolished? And what about transit connections? A quarter of Detroit households don’t have a car and buses are a way lots of people here get to work. Our feature conversation raises some questions and gives us some historical context. Dave Gifford is a regional community and transit advocate who also has a passion for music. He wrote an interesting piece that appeared on medium and in the Metro Times about it that's gotten a lot of traction. Link: https://www.metrotimes.com/city-slang/archives/2020/12/14/dear-amazon-before-you-bulldoze-more-than-80-years-of-detroit-music-history-please-read-this And we dive into the question - could this, with some adjustments, be a much better development than it is? And Amazon has a response, too. Find Dave on Twitter: https://twitter.com/TransitGuideDET also https://twitter.com/DE_Gifford Then, I’ll share three things to know around town: Including an update on coronavirus relief in Michigan, Marathon is looking to create a green zone near their Detroit refinery, and an update on community benefits money on Detroit’s east side.
Episode Notes Sugar Law Center Attorney Tonya Myers-Phillips, State Fairgrounds Development Coalition members, Frank and Karen Hammer In this tenth episode of the Riverwise Podcast, we hear from three Detroiters fighting for public involvement as the Mayor looks to fast-track the sale of Detroit's State Fairgrounds property to one of the world's richest corporations. What does the Amazon deal offer besides unskilled jobs— jobs that aren't even promised to Detroiters? What broader economic and social opportunities do we miss out on when we continue to talk only in terms of the 'job system'? What about the environmental impact for thousands of Eastsiders? Should the Detroit City Council have insisted on more from Amazon in terms of community benefits? Frank and Karen Hammer from the State Fairgrounds Development Coalition, which conceived the community-driven METAExpo plan, and Sugar Law Center attorney Tonya Myers-Phillips divulge how Mayor Duggan is avoiding the truth about Amazon job creation and bypassing Detroit's recently established Community Benefits Ordinance (CBO). The Riverwise Podcast is bringing together Detroit citizens to consider new and forms of resistance to continuing economic and political marginalization in communities of color. For over three years now, the Riverwise collective has created media that depicts local activism and the profound new work being done in Detroit neighborhoods. Through the quarterly Riverwise magazine, Riverwise community conversations, and the Riverwise Writing Workshop, we're developing our collective voice.

Well, so much for a possible reprieve in the coronavirus spread in Michigan. The state on Friday reported 205 deaths in the last 24 hours, an increase of 43%. There were 1,279 new confirmed cases of COVID-19. Meanwhile, good news for the Uber drivers, freelancers and other independent contractors of the world: You’ll be able to file for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance starting Monday at michigan.gov/UIA. That brings an extra $600 a week on top of the maximum $362 in state unemployment benefits. Meanwhile, Mayor Mike Duggan says the city is working with the Wayne State School of Medicine to increase drive-through testing at the State Fairgrounds site to more than 1,000 per day. The city is also offering hazard pay to first responders, public employees and others whose jobs put them at risk of infection. Also on today’s show: We talk about the “war zone” conditions being reported out of Sinai-Grace hospital in Detroit, according to The Detroit News Speaking of the Detroit Medical Center, which operates Sinai-Grace, they won’t tell us how many confirmed coronavirus inpatients they’re treating, or how many staffers have been infected. Nor will Ascension Health, which operates St. John Hospital on Detroit’s east side, or McLaren Health Care, which operates hospitals in Pontiac and Mount Clemens. That’s despite a state order to do so. And Beaumont and Henry Ford are reporting their numbers daily. The TCF Center is now a field hospital and was set to accept its first patients Friday. This weekend, workers will start converting the Suburban Showplace Collection in Novi to the same. A major Detroit waste hauler is indefinitely suspending the pickup of all yard waste because people stuck at home are throwing away so much solid waste. And Hamtramck Stadium, former home to Negro League teams, won a half-million-dollar grant for renovations. Stay safe out there, friends, and take care of one another. On today’s show, we bring you a slew of short updates on the coronavirus situation in and around Detroit. The state on Wednesday reported 1,376 new confirmed cases and 114 deaths, bringing the overall total to 20,346 confirmed cases and 959 deaths. That might not seem like much to celebrate, but it’s the smallest jump in new daily cases since March 31. In Detroit, the epicenter of the outbreak in Michigan, Mayor Mike Duggan says testing at the former State Fairgrounds site is way ahead of projections. Meanwhile, we cover lots of other coronavirus developments around the region: The Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi is being converted into a 1,000-patient field hospital, the second in the region The coronavirus is expected to blow a huge hole in the city of Detroit’s budget, partly because the casinos are closed Thousands of employees of Detroit-area health systems are likely infected with COVID-19 Electric vehicle startup Rivian will delay the start of production to 2021, from later this year, as coronavirus stalls its progress retooling its factory in Illinois GM won a U.S. government contract worth $489.4 million to cover its cost to build critically needed medical ventilator for coronavirus victims And Little Caesars and Kroger have both made announcements related to the pandemic. With Maryland schools starting right after Labor Day this year, the first weekend in September is the perfect opportunity to make even more summer memories. I’ve compiled a list of some of our favorite local ideas to get you inspired for the season. 1. Maryland State Fair (August 23-September 3). No other event provides so much food, fun, and family entertainment for so little. There are both tame and thrilling rides, classic and local foods, livestock, garden and home exhibits, thoroughbred racing, and even live national concerts featuring star entertainers like Smash Mouth, Chris Lane, and Jefferson Starship. Hit up this event through September 3 at the State Fairgrounds in Timonium. 2. Maryland Week in Ocean City (August 26-September 9). I love a good bargain, and Maryland Week in Ocean City means discounts. Some hotels are offering 15% to 20% discounts depending on the length of your stay. Others are paring discounted room rates with gift certificates to restaurants or other amenities in the area. Use this as an opportunity to enjoy the last vestiges of summer and pack in a little more fun in the OC sun. 3. National Hard Crab Derby and Fair (August 27-September 2). This is a unique crab-themed festival at Summer’s Cove in Crisfield that features crab races, crab cooking and picking contests, carnival rides, arts and crafts, live entertainment, beauty pageants, a parade, and fireworks shows. Remember to bring your mallets! “The first weekend in September is the perfect opportunity to make even more summer memories in Maryland.” 4. Rhythms & Reels (August 31-September 1). Join Baltimore City Recreation and Parks Department for the third season of Rhythms & Reels, a free series of music and movies in our local recreation areas. On Friday, August 31, you can bring the whole family to see “Wreck-It Ralph” at the rec center in Cartonsville. On Saturday, September 1, you can watch “Despicable Me 3” at Lakeland Park in South Baltimore. Come hungry, because there’s free popcorn. 5. Sunset Paddle on the Middle Branch (Friday, August 31 from 7-9 p.m.). If you prefer nature to the movies, this event is for you. You can explore our waterways on a guided tour with the Recreation and Parks Department. You’re likely to see fish, crabs, and maybe even a great blue heron. There will be 10 canoes and 10 kayaks, so RSVP early to reserve your spot in a boat. There will be small fee for both residents and non-residents, but everything you need is provided for paddling. 6. Waterfront Wellness Series (Saturday and Sunday mornings from 7-9 a.m.). Go get healthy at the harbor with free local fitness classes, featuring yoga, boot camp, dance, and even just plain running. To find out more ideas or details about fun Labor Day activities, check out our Facebook page. You’ll also find a ton of great real estate information there. For any other questions, feel free to reach out to me.

“I show American Saddlebred Horses and we used to have a couple big shows up here at the state fairgrounds which are no longer available. And it was very sad to see that the Michigan legislature decided not to pay for the maintenance of the coliseum and the grounds.

This week we feature yes another show from 1980.. this one was the last show of the summer tour that year, and took place up in Lewiston Maine, at a big outdoor festival there at the State Fairgrounds on September 6th, 1980. This is a wonderful show, and while this recording does suffer some issues (this is a soundboard/audience matrix) it still captures what is a superb performance and I'm certain you'll enjoy it. The boys come out strong out of the gate, with a rocking 'Alabama Getaway' into 'Greatest Story Every Told'.. when Garcia starts out with 'Sugaree' you might think things are about to settle down, but hold on for one of the better versions of this number you are likely to hear.. this is fantastic! The band is not about to slow down however as the remainder of set one contains plenty to like, including a rare, mid-set 'Feel Like A Stranger' and a great China->Rider->Promised Land to close out set 1. While we will hear set 2 next week, with its own spectacular jamming, I hope you find this set a great way to spend a late summer day... State Fairgrounds, Lewiston, ME (9/6/80) Alabama Getaway Greatest Story Ever Told Sugaree Me and My Uncle Mexicali Blues Tennessee Jed Feel Like a Stranger Friend of the Devil Far From Me Little Red Rooster China Cat Sunflower I Know You Rider Promised Land You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod082815.mp3 As I send off my two sons to college this weekend, I'm left with the feeling best expressed by the boys when they sang: "Wo Oh, what I want to know, where does the time go?" I wish all of you well, and thank you for giving me the opportunity to share this magic music with you...

In our first videocast, we attended the second annual Indiana Microbrewers Winterfest at the State Fair Grounds in Indianapolis. At the festival, we were lucky enough to interview members of Hoosier Beer Geek, who helped organize the festival, as well as head brewers Caleb Stanton and Clay Robinson from Upland and Sun King breweries, respectively. Along with the interviews, we included a montage of pictures we took at the event. Enjoy!
This week we celebrate our one year anniversary of the Podcast... hard to believe, really. Thanks for listening each week and allowing me to spin a few selections for you.I recently saw some previously uncirculated Widespread on bt.etree.org and thought I would share it. I recommend listening to the following loud and with your eyes closed. The material from 1992 has been selected because the band is just TEARING through these songs. In particular I enjoyed listening to Todd beating the skins like a madman and Mikey burning through the leads on these songs. The Flewzy is an interesting one and features some adjusted lyrics - for those fans who were around in 1997 you might just recognize what Dave is singing about there. I might bring you more from this 10/15/99 Warfield show in the future, but this is what would fit this week, so it'll have to do for now. Thanks for listening - I look forward to doing this each week, so knowing you are all listening and reading means alot.
