In a stunning escalation of tensions between academia and federal policy, the Trump administration has taken unprecedented action by targeting Harvard University’s ability to enroll international students—an institution where nearly one in three students hails from abroad. Citing national security concerns, links to foreign influence, and a crackdown on antisemitism, the administration's move has sparked outrage, legal battles, and global concern. As Harvard pushes back in court and international partners scramble to support displaced students, the decision raises far-reaching questions: What does this mean for academic freedom in the US? How will this reshape the future of international education? And where do we draw the line between national interest and intellectual openness? Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s meeting with US President Donald Trump ended in disaster last Friday before the world’s media at the White House over the war with Russia. The visit by Mr Zelensky was designed to help Ukraine convince the US not to side with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who ordered the invasion of Ukraine three years ago. Instead the Ukrainian leader disagreed sharply with Mr Trump and Vice-President JD Vance over the conflict. Mr Trump quickly took to Truth Social to accuse Mr Zelensky of disrespecting the United States. How does the new administration in Washington undermine Kyiv’s attempts to maintain Western support for its war effort? With the public fallout from this meeting, how might US-Ukraine relations be impacted in the future? Her research focuses on data-driven innovation and its impact on organizations and society. Alaimo co-authored the book Data Rules: Reinventing the Market Economy with Jannis Kallinikos, which MIT Press published in 2024. She also serves as a senior editor of the European Journal of Information Systems. Summary In this episode of Talking About Platforms, Cristina Alaimo discusses her work on platforms as new enterprise forms mediating heterogeneous actors' participation, highlighting the central role of data in transforming social and economic relations. She introduces the concept of "de-centering," which distinguishes platform-based organizations from traditional organizations focused on boundaries, resources, and concentrated knowledge. Platforms, unlike traditional organizations, thrive on the dispersed and heterogeneous participation of actors, recentralizing data to produce value. The discussion explores the cognitive revolution in business and the importance of data as a resource of knowledge, not just economic value. Cristina emphasizes that data is not simply found or given by users but is actively made through the engineering of platform participation. She also touches on the impact of regulatory frameworks, like the EU's Digital Markets Act, on digital platforms, noting that their effect may be limited due to the dynamic nature of the environment and developments in AI. We delve into the complexities of privacy in the data economy, question the concept's operationalization, and advocate for a more specific discussion about citizen rights. Cristina calls for academia to avoid ideological battles and instead focus on understanding how data is produced, who benefits, and the various dimensions of data, urging a more nuanced approach to data economy discussions. Additionally, she highlights the need for a cautious yet flexible approach to regulation, considering the broad impact on knowledge access and societal norms. The leaders of the European Union's member states are set to meet in Brussels to discuss the Israel-Hamas war and the possibility of issuing a joint call for a 'humanitarian pause' to allow more emergency aid into the Gaza Strip. Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron has paid a visit to Israel, where he said the ‘first objective' in the conflict should be to secure the release of those held hostage by Hamas. Joko Widodo's recent trip to four African countries marked the first ever by an Indonesian head of state. The President's five-day visit took him to Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique, before finishing in South Africa where he attended the meeting of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) group of nations in Johannesburg. In his address to the BRICS conference Jokowi evoked the ‘spirit of Bandung' in reference to the Asia-Africa conference held in the West Java capital in 1955 and called for solidarity and cooperation between the nations of the Global South. But Indonesia stopped short of accepting an invitation to join the expanding group, which is seen as a potential challenge or alternative to Western hegemony in a changing new world order. So, what motivated such a high-level trip to Africa? Why did Jokowi choose to make such an historic visit at this stage in his presidency? What is the current state of Indonesia-Africa relations and what might Indonesia's ambitions be for its future in the continent? In this week's episode Jemma Purdey chats with Dr Christophe Dorigné-Thomson who holds a PhD in Politics from the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences at Universitas Indonesia, and a Master in Business/Management (Grande Ecole Programme) with a major in Finance from ESSEC Business School. His research focuses on foreign policy (Indonesia, Asia-Africa, and European nations notably); political economy; external powers' engagement with Africa, Asia, and Europe, including political, economic, and defense and security approaches; and Indonesian, Asia-Africa, and Western politics. His forthcoming book, Indonesia's Engagement with Africa, will be published in 2023 by Palgrave Macmillan. In 2023, the Talking Indonesia podcast is co-hosted by Dr Jemma Purdey from Monash University, Tito Ambyo from RMIT and Dr Jacqui Baker from Murdoch University.

In an article in We Are the City, Viviane de Beaufort (a professor of European Law at ESSEC Business School and an expert in public policy and lobbying), explores the reasons why women were turning down professional leadership positions. The article showed that 80% of the women interviewed, feared the job title wouldn't reflect reality, and 36% cited imposter syndrome.   With Joanna's purposefully curious nature, this written piece became the catalyst for this episode as she pondered whether we, as Introverts, repress our aspirations due to fear or limiting beliefs.   Listen in as our Host helps us understand what aspirations are, discover how we as Introverts can reclaim ours authentically, and recognize the actions that will keep us in alignment with our purpose, goals, and aspirations.   KEYPOINTS: What are Aspirations? One of the primary issue plaguing R&D for new drugs is the experimental discovery (trial & error) process. Success rate is very low and capital intensive and takes a long time to market. NOVA's mission is to instill an engineering mindset into drug R&D (model, simulate, predict) to help companies design more targeted trials. Imagine having 78,000 trial patients in a phase II clinical trial compared to the usual 150 patient trials. Using AI and mechanistic modeling is becoming a trend. In fact, the model-informed drug development pilot program by the FDA is one of the most successful trials by the FDA.  Today's guest François-Henri has been the CEO of Novadiscovery (NOVA) since its founding in 2010.  NOVA is a leading health tech company which has developed a hybrid approach combining mechanistic models & artificial intelligence to de-risk research programs and optimize clinical development. Essentially simulating clinical trials with virtual patients - called in silico, which has really taken off in the last few years.  About François-Henri Boissel:François-Henri holds an MSc in Management from ESSEC Business School. Prior to founding NOVA, he spent four years with investment bank Lehman Brothers in London and Tokyo where he has developed an expertise in financial engineering, deal structuring & execution. François-Henri has participated in securitization deals across a wide range of assets representing total completed financings in excess of $500 million USD in Europe and Asia.As NOVA's cofounder and CEO since 2010, François-Henri has honed a variety of skills ranging from corporate structuring to business development and people management.About Novadiscovery:Nova accelerates and de-risks clinical development. For this episode, Eric shares the lessons he's taken away from Obvious Adams, which was first published in 1916. From his own experience in higher education, specifically in the field of MBA programs in world-renowned institutions, Eric has seen both the respect the book has garnered in business academia and the impact of the book on his own life and work. Obvious Adams offers a great lesson in how often we overcomplicate our lives, work, and business, forfeiting the choices that can be more obvious for the more complex path. Eric is the founder of Candidate Coach, a boutique admissions consulting and career coaching agency, working with people worldwide, who seek admissions into top-ranked MBA or masters programs. As the former Director of Recruitment for the Global MBA program at ESSEC Business School, he leverages his vast network and knowledge of the industry to provide customized services for his clients. Eric has presented as the keynote speaker at various colleges and universities on the topic of careers, and is also the author of the MBA guide book series, including "Getting into an MBA in France", "Getting into an MBA in the UK", and "Getting into an MBA in the USA" (coming out in November). Some highlights from the episode: · Even when we know what we should do, we still put things off – a practice Eric and I can still be guilty of. · What we're called to – what we should be doing and is most natural and fulfilling – can come to us in a roundabout (globe-trotting) way – as Eric experienced in his career. · There can be power in reaching into the unknown, starting form scratch, and designing a new world for ourselves. Even without having read this book (yet), do you tend to take the most obvious path in life, work, and leadership – or do you tend to overcomplicate both the resources you have and what it is you want?
