The Cutting Edge Japan Business Show By Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

When you see someone do a very good presentation, your faith in public speaking humanity is restored.  There are so many poor examples of people killing their personal and professional brands with poor public speaking skills, it is refreshing to see talks done well.  It is not that hard really, if you know what you are doing and if you rehearse and practice.  This is where the majority of lousy, boring and uninspiring speakers trip up.  They don't rehearse or practice. Instead, they just unload on their poor unsuspecting audience.  Here is a pro hint.  Never practice on your audience!  The global CEO of a major pharma company jetted into town recently and spoke at a chamber of commerce event.  The presentation was well structured and flowed in a way that was easy to follow.  The slides were professional and clear.  He spoke fluently, wasn't reading from any script and instead was talking about the key points up on screen.  When we got to Q&A, he repeated the question, so that everyone could hear it and then answered it.  He did that while addressing the entire audience, rather than just speaking to the inquirer.  When he did not have the information referred to in a question, he admitted it straight up, without trying to fudge it.  This is not an admission of weakness, rather it builds trust and credibility.  I doubt he did any rehearsal for that audience, because it was a stump speech he has given so many times he was entirely comfortable with the content.  Could he have done better?  Yes, he could have added more stories into the presentation.  A few vignettes from the exciting world of white lab coats, where they were developing new medicines to save humanity, would have been good.  He could have delivered it with a bit more passion.  It was professional, but it came across as a stump speech.  He was supremely comfortable delivering it and that is one issue we have to be alert to.  When we are too comfortable, we can sometimes slip ourselves into cruise control mode.  We should keep upping the ante each occasion, to try and see how much further we can push ourselves as presenters. Another function I attended was an industry awards event and the main VIP guest made some remarks before announcing the winners.  Humour is very, very hard to get right.  For every professional comedian we see on television, there are thousands waiting tables and trying to break into the industry. When you see humour done well by a public speaker, you are impressed.  You need to have material that is funny for a start.  Then you have to be able to deliver it so that people laugh.  This sounds easy, but as professional comedians know, the timing of the delivery is key.  So are the pauses and the weighting of certain key words.  It has to be delivered fluently, so no ums and ahs, no hesitations, no mangling of words.  Getting the facial expressions to match what is being said is also tricky.  Our humorous VIP was delivering some lines that he had used a number of times before, so he knew his material worked.  It is always good when big shots are self depreciating.  We can more easily identify with them, when they don't come across as taking themselves too seriously.  “I am good and I know it”, doesn't work so well with the rest of us.  How do you become humorous as a speaker? Where do we acquire our humorous material?  We steal it.  Our speaker had probably heard those jokes somewhere else and just topped and tailed them for this event.  Very cleverly, he made them sound personal, as if these incidents had really happened to him.  This is important in order to build a connection with the punters in the audience.  So, when you attend an event and you hear someone make a good joke or tell a humorous story, don't just laugh and reach for another chardonnay.  Quickly write it down and later start using it yourself.  The secret though is to practice that humourous telling on small audiences, to test you have the delivery just right.  The cadence is important and that takes practice.  I would guess our speaker had told those jokes many times before.  It is fresh for us, but for him it was well within his range of capability.  This is what comedians do.  They introduce new material in small venues, filter out what doesn't work and then they bring the best gags to the big stage.  We should do the same.  Another place where we can find humour is in what we say that makes an audience laugh.  When I returned to Japan in 1992 as a diplomat and Trade Commissioner, I was called upon to do a lot of public speaking in Japanese.  I began with constructing jokes that I thought were humourous.  This was a pretty bold step, because I had no track record in being funny in English, let alone in Japanese.  These jokes of my own crafting all bombed completely.  However, I would say something, not meaning to be funny and the Japanese audience would laugh.  I took note of that reaction and realised that was a joke.  I would incorporate that into my other talks. Over a long period of time and a lot of speeches, I built up a stock of these humorous sprinklings of pixy dust that worked with Japanese audiences. It was refreshing to see two competent speakers in action recently and it is certainly a skill that all of us can improve in.  There are some simple basics of speaking we need to concentrate on - prepare, rehearse, learn – repeat!

From groundbreaking advancements in renewable energy and carbon capture, storage, and utilization, to revolutionary solutions for waste management and water conservation, Canadian cleantech companies are at the forefront of the global transition to a cleaner, net zero future. We have an abundance of talented, passionate cleantech innovators who are poised to deploy technologies, and make incredible impacts on global sustainability challenges. But our domestic market for the adoption of many of these technologies is relatively small. In order for many Canadian companies to remain competitive, achieve scale, and gain a foothold in their target market, finding customers outside of Canada is necessary. And while international markets are a good solution for the issue of adoption, expanding globally comes with its own set of unique barriers. Jeanette and the guests explore how Canada's official export-supporting programs like the Trade Commissioner Service and Export Development Canada help cleantech innovators as they navigate the challenges associated with international expansion. From foreign regulations and cultural differences, to infrastructure and logistics challenges, our guests break down how they are helping Canada's cleantech ecosystem grow beyond our borders. —--------Allan Edwards is the Senior Trade Commissioner and Head of Office at the High Commission of Canada's Trade Office in Johannesburg, South Africa. Jobs for mates – it's frustrating when it happens in everyday life. Even more so when it happens at the highest levels of politics. A plum job as Trade Commissioner for a former Deputy Premier. A spot on the Administrative Appeals Tribunal for a former staffer. State and federal governments make hundreds of appointments each year to public boards and tribunals – and many of them go to people with political connections. While it may seem harmless – after all, ‘everyone does it' – it can have pervasive consequences for Australia's democracy. Listen to Danielle Wood, CEO, Kate Griffiths, Deputy Program Director, Anika Stobart, Associate, and Kat Clay, Head of Digital Communications, discuss Grattan's latest report New politics: A better process for public appointments. Today we have the pleasure of speaking with an amazing leader and a legend in our industry, Gary Shapiro! Gary is President and CEO of the Consumer Technology Association- the association that owns the famous Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. He is a New York Times bestselling author and was recently awarded a Legend of Honor.  Gary is full of drive and passion! In this episode, he talks about his experiences and shares his fascinating views on the meetings and events industry. We hope you enjoy listening to today's inspiring conversation with Gary Shapiro! Bio: Gary Shapiro is an acclaimed author, lobbyist, president, and CEO of the Consumer Technology Association (CTA)®, which represents over 1,500 consumer technology companies and owns and produces the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) ® — The Global Stage for Innovation.  A Georgetown Law graduate, Shapiro began his career as an associate at the Squire Sanders law firm. After an extended tenure in law, he began working on Capitol Hill as an assistant to a prominent member of the U.S. Congress. Later in his life, Gary would use this combined law and legal experience to be named one of The Hill's top lobbyists numerous times throughout his career (2015-2021). As his experience in law and politics progressed, he became more aligned with the world of technology, which eventually brought him into the fold of the Consumer Technology Association in 1982.  Taking the role of President and CEO, Shapiro evolved the idea of the workplace over his 40-year-long tenure leading the organization. Directing a staff of 150 employees alongside thousands of industry volunteers, he built a forward-thinking and successful business focused on the further development and integration of technology in all industries of the world. Under his leadership, CTA has won numerous awards for its healthy workplace, family-friendly employment practices, and environmentally friendly exhibition practices. In 2019, CTA earned its sixth consecutive selection as a Washington Post Top Workplace.  Shapiro is a New York Times bestselling author whose books include “Ninja Future: Secrets to Success in the New World of Innovation” (HarperCollins, 2019), “Ninja Innovation: The Ten Killer Strategies of the World's Most Successful Businesses” (HarperCollins, 2013), and “The Comeback: How Innovation will Restore the American Dream” (Beaufort, 2011). Through these books, numerous television appearances, and as a columnist whose more than 1,200 opinion pieces have appeared in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and The Washington Post, Shapiro has helped direct policymakers and business leaders on the importance of innovation and technology in the U.S. economy.  Shapiro consistently stays active in policy, thought leadership, government, and community development alongside his position at CTA. He currently sits on the Northern Virginia Technology Council, CEO Update Roundtable, Council of Manufacturing Associations Board, and more. A subject of regular praise, Shapiro was once called a “mastermind” for his initiative in helping to create the Industry Cooperative for Ozone Layer Protection. His mind for an evolving workplace and consumers while staying environmentally conscious has paved a roadmap for bipartisan law and policymakers to follow in making a more innovative world.  Gary Shapiro is happily married and lives in Michigan. Gary's story Gary enrolled at Georgetown Law School as the youngest student. He started school with no money and immediately landed a job at Capitol Hill. In his second year, Gary started working for a law firm. He spent his third year working there almost full-time. He loved what the law firm was doing because they focused on the future. He became a summer associate and then an associate.  CES While still a student, Gary worked for a client at the law firm, which he loved and saw as the future of technology. The client was essentially the Consumer Technology Association and the CES. Gary fell in love with what an event could be after experiencing the excitement and action on the floor! Competition Gary feels that events are good for competition because competitors get brought together in one room. The best things tend to happen when you see what your competition is doing and how you need to improve, and that produces innovation for society.  A battle for the future of technology and innovation Gary found himself in the middle of a case about the legality of video cassette recorders. He debated the issue and formed an association of video retailers. They eventually went to the Supreme Court, and Gary testified many times. It was a huge battle, and Gary even debated live on the Today Show! They eventually proved that technology and innovation are vital for the future and for improving lives. Gary's motivating mission Innovation is vital for our destiny as human beings and the future of our nation. So we need to guard and protect it. That has been Gary's motivating mission for over thirty years.  A diverse nation The United States is an inventive nation partly because it is diverse and partly because it attracts some of the best and brightest immigrants from around the world.  The secret sauce  The best and brightest immigrants want to live in the U.S. and create a better life for themselves and their families. That is our secret sauce and strength!  Suffering One of the reasons we are suffering as a country right now is because we have lost our zest for immigration. So we are no longer welcoming immigrants who want to work hard and fill jobs.  An issue  Costs are increasing so much that it will soon be a real challenge to have meetings. Face-to-face meetings The pandemic has caused most thinking individuals to do some self-examination and consider what is truly important to them. Many CEOs have concluded that face-to-face meetings are important. CFOs, on the other hand, are more excited about people working at home. A different era Meetings and events are about relationships, transformation, change, and innovation. We are now in a new and different era where people skills are vital. Why have events? Events are all about business. They bring serendipity and discovery. They also help people find out what they do not know. From a business perspective, we need events to learn new things and build relationships.  Skills  Some skills were not valued much in the past but are valued now. (Like cross-cultural understanding and being able to think outside of your vertical sphere.) Skills like knowing how to deal with people, motivate people, set goals, and get results are vital. Valuable business skills include teaching teamwork skills, cross-culture skills, empathy, understanding, and motivation. Purpose In business today, purpose needs to be put above profit, and adopting a human approach is vital.  Novel questions Currently, CEOs face many new challenges. New questions keep coming up, like whether people have to go to the office every day, whether people can live any work from anywhere in the world, and how to maintain a culture and relationships. Employees Employees need to be taken care of, and they are all motivated by different things, like the purpose of the business, money, title, or recognition. CEOs need to understand that and have empathy. Virtual meetings and the metaverse Everyone should think that the metaverse is the coolest thing, yet no one seems to be able to understand it or define it, and no one can see it, conceptualize it, or even say what it is. It is also hard to put on digital events, and most people do not prefer to attend them. However, the metaverse promises more interactivity and a more immersive experience, and virtual events tend to cost less and be more profitable.  Succeeding in the world of discovery and innovation In the world of discovery and innovation today, you cannot stay only in your vertical sphere if you'd like to do well. You have to cross-license, partner, go outside of your vertical industry, and do many different things to succeed. Ecosystems  At some events, ecosystems combine with other ecosystems in new ways, creating better services and benefits for people. Virtual events versus the real world Gary feels that having a five-sense experience allows people to form relationships. It also allows for serendipity and discovery. That is also possible at virtual events, but it will take longer and be less effective and efficient. Even though virtual events may save travel costs and work during a pandemic, Gary would still choose to be in the real world. Impersonation fraud Security is an issue, and it's a big deal when your identity gets taken! Impersonation fraud has affected Gary as an event producer when people have used his company's logo to try to sell things, including exhibit space. He does whatever he can to shut those people down. He hopes the Trade Commissioner will sharpen its tools to help.  A revolution Even though we may not feel it, we are currently living through a revolution in the use of technology. Throughout history, every new technology has been a tool that could benefit humans or harm them. If people don't like how technology gets used, they want to make it illegal. However, in time, that technology might help us solve big problems.  Focus Ultrasound Gary is on the foundation board for Focus Ultrasound. It uses sound waves to quickly and easily treat various conditions, including tumors and tremors. It has been FDA approved for treating many different issues.   Using science in better ways   Many people are dying unnecessarily. On one side, we have wars where people go against one another intentionally. On the other side, we have the opportunity to use science in better ways to improve our lives. It is inspiring to know that we now have the technology to produce clean water out of the air and use solar energy. Government The government should set guardrails for new technology. However, it should not inhibit innovation. (Part of Gary's job is to ensure that the government values innovation.) Solve problems like a Ninja For Gary, being a Ninja is about doing anything you can to solve a problem. He used the concept of the Ninja with his children. Now, he uses it with his employees to help them get ahead in life by relying on skills and teamwork and finding new ways to solve problems.  Ready for the pandemic When the pandemic hit, Gary's organization was ready for it. So they were able to adapt quickly.  Risks Gary insists on his staff taking risks and making mistakes. But they must confess when they make mistakes because people learn from their failures, not their successes. The Legend of Honor Gary was awarded the Legend of Honor, by the President of France, in a personal ceremony. He got it for his passion for innovation, improving the world, and his willingness to share his work with France. Gary accepted the award on behalf of the meetings and exhibition industry and all those who put on CES. Politicians Most world-class events take place in Europe, and Europeans support the events. American politicians tend not to support events. Gary feels that every American event organizer should figure out ways to invite politicians, to help them understand and value the various aspects of events.   Connect with Eric On LinkedIn On Facebook On Instagram On Website Connect with Gary Shapiro On LinkedIn Consumer Technology Association Consumer Electronics Show Books mentioned: Jack Welch and the GE Way by Robert Slater Ninja Future: Secrets to Success in the New World of Innovation by Gary Shapiro

There is a very special relationship between these two countries, thanks to Jorn Utzon's design of the Sydney Opera House and Tasmanian born HRH Crown Princess Mary. However, it doesn't explain why Australians have embraced Danish products so wholeheartedly. My guest, Michael T Hansen, the former Trade Commissioner of Denmark, talks about how the 2008/9 global financial crisis offered an opportunity for Danish companies in Australia when the rest of the world was in recession. During his eight years in the job he assisted over 200 Danish companies to enter the Australian market. Michael talks about why he thinks Danish design, cuisine, food products and livability concepts are now well known and desired in Australia.  We discuss features of Danish and Nordic corporate culture which Michael has very successfully introduced to his staff as MD of iconic Danish company Nilfisk.  Michael also introduces how, against all odds, hel and his wife Parret have built a stunning, 100% off-the-grid Danish designed holiday house in Australia.   You will learn from Michael about   How he has succeeded in making hundreds of Danish companies into household names in Australia  The challenges and wins in promoting a country in the other side of the world  Nordic tips for a successful career  Follow Michael    Michael T Hansen in LinkedIn Nilfisk Pasific Michael and Parret’s holiday home (in Danish) Follow Nordic Insights  Visit nordicinsights.net Instagram Nordic Insights Podcast  Facebook Nordic Insights Podcast

Reflecting On Your Past Presentations   As the calendar year slowly winds down, now is a good time to review and reflect upon the presentations you have given this year in over the past few years.  What have you learnt not to do and what have you learnt to keep doing?  Those who don't study their own presentations history are bound to repeat the errors of the past.  Sounds reasonable doesn't it. We are all mentally geared up for improvements over time.  The only issue is that these improvements are not ordained and we have to create our own futures.   Do you have a good record keeping system?  When I got back to Japan in 1992 I was the Australian Consul and Trade Commissioner in Nagoya.  As far as the locals were concerned, I was the Australian Ambassador to the Chubu Region.  I am sure the parade of the various Ambassadors in the Tokyo Embassy never saw it that way, but that is how the locals viewed my vice-regal presence.  One consequence was you were regularly asked to give long speeches.  I say long because a one hour speech would be a dawdle, compared to the two hour monstrosities you were expected to fill.   I started writing down the speech number, the title, who it was for, what language was I speaking and how long was the speech.  I did this because Japan loves the devil they know and you would be asked back to speak again and it is embarrassing if you don't recall the first talk.  I am now over 535 speeches on my list.  Without knowing it I was compiling a body of  work as a speaker.  The list noted the topics I covered, which was a useful reservoir of things I could speak about if asked to venture forth a topic for the nominated speaking spot.   I would often use visuals.  When I started we were back in the dark ages and were using overhead projectors (OHPs) and breakthrough innovations like colour OHPs instead of just black and white images.  For photographs, we used a slide carousel and a slide projector.  At some point we moved to powerpoint and life got a whole lot easier, when it came to preparing presentations.  Somewhere I probably still have those OHP presentations stored away somewhere, except today you would struggle to find an overhead projector to show them with.  We can much more easily store our presentation materials today, so there is no excuse about not doing that.   I keep my presentations in digital files stored by the year in which they were delivered.  This is very handy because you can go back and see what you covered when you gave that talk.  Some of the images may be plundered for a current presentation, if they are relevant, so it is a nice resource to draw on.  You can also see how much you have grown in sophistication as a presenter, by looking at the quality of what you have been presenting.  This is a step we shouldn't miss because we are often so caught up in our everyday, we lose sense of the time progression in our  presenter lives.   A more difficult task is to grab the points that are additional to the slides.  These may be kept as notes on the print out of the slide deck or in a notes format for the talk.  If I have notes, which these days is pretty rare, then they will be very brief.  They are flags for me to expand upon when I am delivering my talk.  More frequently I will print out two or four slides per page and then write on those pages.  I will note some key points I want to make when we get to that slide.  If I am not using slides then the notes format plays the same prompt role.    Things occur to me during a talk, which were not planned.  Maybe I got a light bulb type of idea or a question exposed an answer and brought some additional information to the forefront.  One thing I strongly recommend is immediately after the speech, carve out thirty minutes for quiet reflection on the talk and think about what things you would change in order to make it better next time.  The tendency is to rush back to work, which usually means either meetings or catching up on email.  They can wait.  Don't schedule back to back activities after the talk – give yourself a little time to think.   What I find hard to do is to store the notes hand written on the pages and the notes on the ideas which occurred to me after the talk.  Paper tends to get lost and you throw it out in a bug of spring cleaning and lose it.  Either take photos of the notes on your phone or scan the pages and then file them together with the electronic slide deck in the file for that year of talks.  This way you never lose the inspiration and record of your thinking about this topic.   Time will pass.  You will deliver talks, will get ideas both before and after.  Capture them and learn from what went well and how you can improve on it for next time.  You need a system and if you don't have one today,  then now is a good time to think about creating one.
