The Buddha talked about beings that are volitional (driven by personal will) or functional (performing their function seamlessly in an awakened state). The transition from adolescence to adulthood is when we find out who we actually are by performing our function and not thinking we are special. A skilful human being moves like a stick through water and does not leave much of a trace. There are countless ways of being of service and performing our function.

A reading for meditation of excerpts taken from the text "All Else is Bondage". Terence James Stannus Gray (14 September 1895 – 5 January 1986), better known by the pen name Wei Wu Wei, was a 20th-century Taoist philosopher, writer, Egyptologist and theatre producer. Gray was born in Felixstowe, Suffolk, England on 14 September 1895, into a well-established Anglo-Irish family. He was educated at numerous prestigious institutions including Eton and Oxford University. After he left his theatrical career, his thoughts turned towards philosophy and metaphysics. This led to a period of travel throughout Asia, including time spent at Ramana Maharshi's ashram in Tiruvannamalai, India. Between the years 1958 and 1974 a series of eight books appeared attributed to the mysterious 'Wei Wu Wei'. These works draw on a variety of sources, including Taoism, specifically the texts attributed to Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu, Buddhism, especially The Heart, Diamond and Lankavatara Sutras, and Chan Buddhism as taught by Hui Neng, Huang Po, Hui Hai, etc., as well as the teachings of Padma Sambhava and Sri Ramana Maharshi, among others.

C. Abstract: Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by gait dysfunction in the advanced stages of the disease. The unilateral 6-OHDA toxin-induced model is the most studied animal model of Parkinson's disease, which reproduces gait dysfunction after greater than 68% dopamine (DA) loss in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). The extent to which the neural activity in hemi-parkinsonian rats correlates to gait dysfunction and DAergic cell loss is not clear. In this paper we report the effects of unilateral DA depletion on cerebellar vermis activity using micro-electrocorticography (ECoG) during walking and freezing on a runway. Gait and neural activity were measured in 6-OHDA lesioned and sham lesioned rats at 14d, 21d, and 28d after infusion of 6-OHDA or control vehicle into the medial forebrain bundle (MFB) (n=20). Gait deficits in 6-OHDA rats were different from sham rats at 14d (p less than 0.05). Gait deficits in 6-OHDA rats improved at 21d and 28d except for run speed, which decreased at 28d (p=0.018). No differences in gait deficits were observed in sham lesioned rats at any time points. Hemi-parkinsonian rats showed hyperactivity in the cerebellar vermis at 21d (p less than 0.05), but not at 14d and 28d, and the activity was reduced during freezing epochs in lobules VIa, VIb, and VIc (p less than 0.05). These results suggest that DAergic cell loss causes pathological cerebellar activity at 21d post-lesion and suggests that compensatory mechanisms from the intact hemisphere contribute to normalized cerebellar activity at 28d. The decrease in cerebellar oscillatory activity during freezing may be indicative of neurological changes during freezing of gait in Parkinson's disease patients making this region a potential location for biomarker detection. Although the unilateral 6-OHDA model presents gait deficits that parallel clinical presentations of Parkinson's disease, further studies in animal models of bilateral DA loss are needed to understand the role of the cerebellar vermis in Parkinson's disease. Abstract: Preclinical models of Parkinson's disease are imperative to gain insight into the neural circuits that contribute to gait dysfunction in advanced stages of the disease. The PTEN-induced putative kinase 1 (P1) knockout (KO) early onset model of Parkinson's disease may be a useful rodent model to study the effects of neurotransmitter degeneration caused by loss of P1 function on brain activity during volitional gait. The goal of this study was to measure changes in neural activity at the cerebellar vermis (CBLv) at 8 months of age. Gait deficits, except run speed, were not significantly different from age-matched wild-type (WT) controls as previously reported. P1KO (n=4) and WT (n=4) rats were implanted with a micro-electrocorticographic array placed over CBLv lobules VI (a, b, and c) and VII. Local field potential recordings were obtained during volitional gait across a runway. Power spectral analysis and coherence analysis were used to quantify network oscillatory activity in frequency bands of interest. CBLv power was hypoactive in the beta (VIb, VIc, and VII) and alpha (VII) bands at CBLv lobules VIb, VIc, and VII in P1KO rats compared to WT controls during gait (p less than 0.05). These results suggest that gait improvement in P1KO rats at 8 months may be a compensatory mechanism attributed to movement corrections caused by decreased inhibition of the alpha band of CBLv lobule VII and beta band of lobules VIb, VIc, and VII. The P1KO model may be a valuable tool for understanding the circuit mechanisms underlying gait dysfunction in early-onset Parkinson's disease patients with functional loss of P1. Future studies investigating the CBLv as a potential biomarker and therapeutic target for the treatment of gait dysfunction in Parkinson's disease are warranted. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.11.08.515718v1?rss=1 Authors: Navarrete, J., Schneider, K. N., Smith, B. M., Goodwin, N. L., Zhang, Y. Y., Gross, E., Tsai, V. S., Heshmati, M., Golden, S. A. Abstract: Background: A key challenge in developing new treatments for neuropsychiatric illness is the disconnect between preclinical models and the complexity of human social behavior. We aimed to integrate voluntary social self-administration into a preclinical rodent stress model, as a platform for the identification of basic brain and behavior mechanisms underlying stress-induced individual differences in social motivation. Here, we introduce an operant social stress (OSS) procedure with male and female mice, where lever presses are reinforced by freely moving social interaction with a familiar social partner across social stress exposure. Methods: OSS is composed of three phases: (i) social self-administration training, (ii) social stress concurrent with daily reinforced social self-administration testing, and (iii) post-stress operant social reward testing under both non-reinforced and reinforced conditions. We resolve social stress-induced changes to social motivation behaviors using hierarchical clustering and aggregated z-scores, capturing the spectrum of individual differences that we describe with a social index score. Results: OSS captures a range of stress-related dynamic social motivation behaviors inclusive of sex as a biological variable. Both male and female mice lever press for access to a social partner, independent of social partner coat color or familiarity. Social stress attenuates social self-administration in males and promotes social reward seeking behavior in females. Hierarchical clustering does not adequately describe the relative distributions of social motivation following stress, which we find is better described as a non-binary behavioral distribution that we define by introducing the social index score. This index is stable across individual mice. Conclusion: We demonstrate that OSS can be used to detect stable individual differences in stress-induced changes to social motivation in male and female mice. These differences may reflect unique neurobiological, cellular and circuit mechanisms not captured by preclinical models that omit voluntary social behaviors. The inclusion of volitional social procedures may enhance the understanding of behavioral adaptations promoting stress resiliency and their mechanisms under more naturalistic conditions. It will leave you yearning for your English classes of yore, or wondering why on earth your English classes weren't as good as this one. We puzzle through Stephen's ‘theories' about Shakespeare and Hamlet and we consider the performativity of Stephen, Shakespeare's plays, and our own social existence. - Check my video for more details! - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaB7oOC5ius&t=531s ========================================================== つもりです(tsumori desu): to Intend to Do Verb + つもりだ The function is to express what you intend to do. One important point here is that the decision should have been made a while ago. Therefore, you cannot use this for decisions made on the spot. お酒をやめるつもりです。 osake o yameru tsumori desu I intend to quit drinking. 明日は家にいるつもり です。 ashita wa ie ni iru tsumori desu. As for tomorrow, I intend to stay at home. 海外の大学に行くつもりです。 kaigai no daigaku ni iku tsumori desu I intend to go to a foreign university. Adding “to omou” or “to omotte iru” (~と思う, ~と思っている) after a verb that is in Volitional Form changes the meaning from “let's [verb]” to “I am thinking that I will [verb].” Since “to omou” means “I think,” you can picture this grammar pattern as expressing a volitional thought or feeling that you are holding in your mind. For example, a person who has said “let's do it” to themselves, internally. The difference between “to omou” (which is present/future tense) and “to omotte iru” (which is progressive tense) in this pattern is that the former implies a new thought (something you have just now begun to think that you will do). The latter implies a longer-term thought (something that you've been thinking for a while that you will do). お母さんに手紙を書こうと思います。 Okaasan ni tegami o kakou to omoi masu (I think I will write a letter to my mother). お母さんに手紙を書こうと思っています。 Okaasan ni tegami o kakou to omotte imasu (I'm thinking I will write a letter to my mother). お酒をやめようと思います。 osake o yameyou to omoimasu. I intend to quit drinking. 明日は家にいようと思います。 ashita wa ie ni iyou to omoimasu. As for tomorrow, I intend to stay at home. 海外の大学に行こうと思います。 kaigai no daigaku ni ikou to omoimasu. If the verb is a Group 2 Verb, simply remove the final “masu” syllable and replace it with “you:” 食べます → 食べよう (Tabemasu → Tabeyou) b. If the verb is an Group 1, its final vowe" imasu" must be changed to “ou,” which means its final syllable must be replaced (for example, if the verb in question is “Yomimasu ” change it to “yomou”. 読みます → 読もう (Yomimasu → Yomou) c. If your verb ends with a syllable that is just a vowel (e.g. “Kaimasu,” to buy), the pattern is the same: 買います → 買おう (Kaimasu → Kaou) d. The irregular verbs “Shimasu ” (to do) and “Kimasu ” (to come) conjugate thusly: します → しよう (Shimasu → Shiyou) 来ます → 来よう (Kimasu → Koyou) e. Plain Volitional Form can be used in the same way as Polite Volitional Form. First, conjugate the verb in question into stem form. Then, add “-mashou” to the end of the stem. For example, the stem form of the verb “yomu” (to read) is “yomi;” so the Polite Volitional Form of “yomu” is “yomi mashou.” 読む → 読み → 読みましょう お茶を買って、外で教科書を読みましょう。 Ocha o katte, soto de kyoukasho o yomi mashou (Let's buy tea, and read the textbook outside). 私達はカフェに行きましょう。 Watashi tachi wa kafe ni ikimashou (Let's us go to the café). If you would like to make your suggestion into a question, simply add the question particle “ka” to the end of the sentence: 教科書を読みましょうか。 kyoukasho o yomi mashou ka (Shall we read the textbook?) If you were to translate both 教科書を読みましょう (kyoukasho wo yomi mashou) and 教科書を読もう (kyoukasho o yomou) to English, it would be hard to differentiate between the two sentences. Their essential meaning is identical. The only real difference between “yomi mashou” and “yomou” is that the latter is much more casual, and should be used primarily with peers or with those younger than oneself. (This is as opposed to bosses, adults older than oneself, strangers, etc). f. Just as with Polite Volitional Form, a “ka” question particle can be added onto the end of a Plain Volitional Form suggestion if you would like to turn the suggestion into a question. 教科書を読もうか。 kyoukasho o yomou ka (Shall we read the textbook?) =============================================== Check out my Youtube Channel! Your volition guards the gate of your soul, the mentality of your soul. If you want to be a spiritually mature believer, it requires a series of volitional decisions every day. You made the decision to believe in Christ. Now you must make the decision to handle personal sin as soon as it occurs using rebound (1 John 1:9). Then make the decision to consistently learn the Word of God and grow in grace and knowledge. You must be willing to stand boldly and proclaim Christ. “Always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you” (1 Pet 3:5). You must decide to keep your priorities straight and finish the race. “I fought a good fight, I finished the course, I kept the faith” (2 Tim 4:7). The final challenge is done—you have the strength to walk alone if you need to. You must take responsibility for your own decisions and actions. Your unhappiness and suffering are often brought on by your own bad decisions. Bad decisions limit future options. Under the law of volitional responsibility, we inflict on ourselves suffering by unconfessed personal sin, living in the cosmic system or failing to follow divine establishment principles. “Be not deceived, God will not be mocked; for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. When we sow to the wind, we reap the whirlwind” (Hosea 8:7). In arrogance, you will fail to see yourself as you really are. You can get off the path to self-destruction through the use of rebound and then God can turn cursing into blessing. Decide to make a course correction and get back to learning and applying God's Word and making decisions based on divine viewpoint. Modern psychologists often use the word volition in preference to “Will”. Volition is the cognitive process by which an individual decides on and commits to a particular course of action. It is defined as purposive striving, and is one of the primary human psychological functions (the others being affection [affect or feeling], motivation [goals and expectations] and cognition [thinking]). Volitional processes can be applied consciously, and they can be automatized as habits over time. Most modern conceptions of volition address it as a process of action control that becomes automatized (see e.g., Heckhausen and Kuhl; Gollwitzer; Boekaerts and Corno). Willpower is the colloquial, and volition the scientific, term for the same state of the will; viz., an “elective preference”. When we have “made up our minds” (as we say) to a thing, i.e., have a settled state of choice respecting it, that state is called an immanent volition; when we put forth any particular act of choice, that act is called an emanant, or executive, or imperative, volition. When an immanent, or settled state of, choice, is one which controls or governs a series of actions, we call that state a predominant volition; while we give the name of subordinate volitions to those particular acts of choice which carry into effect the object sought for by the governing or “predominant volition”.Willpower is a concept that assumes we are under rational control, and the reduction of the same results in a lack of willpower. The fact is that we turn our rationality to serve our impulses or wishes, and sometimes have great willpower in pursuing them. Thus an alcoholic can be very cunning in achieving his determination to drink, and may display great willpower in achieving this goal. Tune in and learn how to re-activate. your personal will!

This show is about renovating your thinking, changing the way you think. Not thinking in terms of human viewpoint, but thinking in terms of divine viewpoint. That's why the Bible says, “Let this mind be in you that was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5). Learning to think as He thought requires that we learn the Scriptures. That's why Proverbs 2:10-11 says, “When wisdom enters your heart, and knowledge becomes pleasant to your soul; then discretion and understanding will guard and protect you.” When you have to make a decision, don't make it based on emotions—make decisions based on what you think. The mind responds and the emotions just react. Full Transcript: https://rhem.pub/volitional-responsibility-d2d422 --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rick-hughes/message

Volition is your ability to choose. God gave us free will. With our freedom to choose, using volitional responsibility, most of the time we cause our own misery and suffering by the bad decisions we make. Wrong thinking, a human viewpoint is a self-imposed misery. Volitional responsibility applies to wrong thinking; wrong motivation; wrong decisions; and wrong or impulsive actions. “For he who does wrong will receive the consequences of that wrong for which he has done for there is no partiality with God” (Col 3:25). We can make a wrong decision based on sin, human good, evil resulting in evil, erroneous emotions in our life, bad judgment, and false teaching. Self-induced misery and divine discipline can result. “He who sows wickedness reaps trouble and the rod of punishment will surely come” (Prov 22:8). “Occupation with the Lord is the instruction for wisdom but before honor, there must come humility” (Prov 15:33). “He who gets wisdom loves his own soul and he who cherishes understanding prospers” (Prov 19:8). God gave you volition, your decider – your chooser. 90% or more of the suffering you'll have is self-induced by mismanaging your relationships, your finances, or your health. “For they sow the wind and they reap the whirlwind” (Hosea 8:7). The decisions you make determine the life you will lead. Spiritual growth gives you wisdom and discernment to make good decisions based on divine viewpoint, not human viewpoint. “Do not be deceived, God will not be mocked; for whatever a man sows this he will also reap” (Gal 6:7). Abstract: Can the human brain, a complex interconnected structure of over 80 billion neurons learn to control itself at the most elemental scale : a single neuron. We directly linked the firing rate of a single (direct) neuron to the position of a box on a screen, which participants tried to control. Remarkably, all subjects upregulated the firing rate of the direct neuron in memory structures of their brain. Learning was accompanied by improved performance over trials, simultaneous decorrelation of the direct neuron to local neurons, and direct neuron to beta frequency oscillation phase-locking. Such previously unexplored neuroprosthetic skill learning within memory related brain structures, and associated beta frequency phase-locking implicates the ventral striatum. Our demonstration that humans can volitionally control neuronal activity in mnemonic structures, may provide new ways of probing the function and plasticity of human memory without exogenous stimulation.
