All I knew was that I was whisked to the famous “glass island” on an overcrowded, stinky boat. I waited behind two dozen tourists to pay an exorbitant price for a little glass fish—what a bewildering experience! Still, it was the artistic traditions of the world that lured me to travel and inspired me to pursue art history. Today, my mission is to EDUCATE, ENTERTAIN, and INSPIRE with the stories of art history, both real and imagined. Join me at lauramorelli.com to read a free story, take an online art history class, or to learn more about my work. Thank you! LAURA MORELLI holds a Ph.D. in art history from Yale University and is an award-winning, USA Today bestselling historical novelist. Laura has taught college students in the United States and Europe. She is a longtime trusted guide in the world of cultural travel and authentic shopping, known for her Authentic Arts guidebook series that includes MADE IN ITALY and other guides. She has been a columnist for National Geographic Traveler and Italy Magazine, and has also developed lessons for TED-Ed. As a historical novelist, Laura's passion is bringing the stories of art history to life. Her debut novel, THE GONDOLA MAKER, was one of the first independently published novels to earn a starred review in Publishers Weekly; it went on to win an IPPY Award and Benjamin Franklin Award. THE PAINTER'S APPRENTICE was a finalist for the 2018 Writer's Digest Self-Published Book Awards grand prize, and was an Editor's Choice in the Historical Novels Review. THE GIANT won an IndieBrag Medallion. THE NIGHT PORTRAIT was a USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestseller and book club pick at Costco, Target, Veranda, and Hudson News. Andrew Harvey - Radical Regeneration Sacred Activism And The Renewal Of The World

Radical Regeneration: Sacred Activism and the Renewal of the World https://www.andrewharvey.net/ https://www.andrewharvey.net/library Andrew Harvey is Founder & Director of the Institute for Sacred Activism, an international organization focused on inviting concerned people to take up the challenge of our contemporary global crises by becoming inspired, effective, and practical agents of institutional and systemic change, in order to create peace and sustainability. Sacred Activism is a transforming force of compassion-in-action that is born of a fusion of deep spiritual knowledge, courage, love, and passion, with wise radical action in the world. The large-scale practice of Sacred Activism can become an essential force for preserving and healing the planet and its inhabitants. Early Years Andrew was born in south India in 1952, where he lived until he was nine years old. It is this early period that he credits with shaping his sense of the inner unity of all religions and providing him with a permanent and inspiring vision of a world infused with the sacred. He left India to attend private school in England and entered Oxford University in 1970 with a scholarship to study history. At the age of 21, he became the youngest person ever to be awarded a fellowship to All Soul's College, England's highest academic honor. Coming Home By 1977, Harvey had become disillusioned with life at Oxford and returned to his native India, where a series of mystical experiences initiated his spiritual journey. Over the next thirty years he plunged into different mystical traditions to learn their secrets and practices. In 1978, he met a succession of Indian saints and sages and began his long study and practice of Hinduism. In 1983, in Ladakh, he met the great Tibetan adept, Thuksey Rinpoche, and undertook with him the Mahayana Buddhist Bodhisattva vows. Andrew's book about that experience, Journey in Ladakh, won the Christmas Humphreys Award. Enter Rumi In 1984, Andrew Harvey began a life-long exploration and explication of Rumi and Sufi mysticism in Paris with a group of French Sufis and under the guidance of Eva De Vitray-Meyerovitch, the magnificent translator of Rumi into French. With Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee, he founded the Sufi Conferences, which have played a prominent role in uniting Sufis of all persuasions during the past six years. He has close connections with great Sufi teachers in America, Africa, India and Pakistan, and a very clear, comprehensive grasp of the state of modern Sufism in both the west and the east. Andrew has written three books on that subject: The Way of Passion: The Celebration of Rumi and Perfume of the Desert, an anthology of Sufi mysticism. The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying In 1990, Andrew collaborated with Sogyal Rinpoche and Patrick Gaffney in the writing of the international bestselling book, The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. In 1992, he met Father Bede Griffiths in his ashram in south India near where Andrew was born. It was this meeting that helped him synthesize the whole of his mystical explorations and reconcile eastern with western mysticism. All Around the World Andrew has since lived in London, Paris, New York, and San Francisco, and has continued to study a variety of religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity. He has written and edited over 30 books. Other honors he has received include the Benjamin Franklin Award and the Mind Body Spirit Award (both for Mary's Vineyard: Daily Readings, Meditations, and Revelations). Among Harvey's other well-known titles are: Dialogues with a Modern Mystic, Hidden Journey, The Essential Mystics, Son of Man, The Return of the Mother and The Direct Path.

Speaking From Our Hearts
Success And The Soulful Leader – Paul D. Lowe & Ravi Nair

Speaking From Our Hearts

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 3, 2022 16:45

On this episode Paul is joined by returning guest, Ravi Nair to talk about success and the Soulful Leader which goes on a few tangents and areas of conversation. KEY TAKEAWAYS A soulful leader is a universal citizen who doesn't care about borders, colour, gender, age, ability or disability. You can only change the world when you have this kind of ideology. If you're doing something in your life out of your own choice – be that homemaker, salesman, podcaster – then you can consider yourself successful. When you do something by choice your heart and soul are involved which means you are experiencing success every day. Success has a lot to do with patience. If you are patient with yourself you have confidence. If you start showing patience with people who are close to you when they mess up or make a mistake it comes across as love. When you show patience with people who aren't close to you, you reflect respect. When you show patience with God, even when things are going wrong, it reflects faith. BEST MOMENTS ‘Success is an experience, it's not an end outcome for us.' ‘A soulful leader is someone who sits on a chair which has four legs made up of confidence, love, respect and faith. All these stem from patience.' ‘Most people think the only way to the top is alone, nobody thinks of taking their team along with them. Soulful leaders are absolutely about comradeship, anybody who goes through our training of social leadership will definitely experience love at the top, not lonely.' Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler and Ames talks about  the challenge of balancing personal dreams and family life and why she loves the creative process. Six things you'll learn from this Joys of Binge Reading episode: How Ames realized her life long dreamWhy 'writing what you know' worked for herThe family operetta that sparked it allThe challenge of work and family life balanceThe writers she admires mostHer latest project Where to find Ames Sheldon: Website: amessheldon.com/ Facebook: @AmesSheldonAuthor Goodreads:https://www.goodreads.com/author/show/14651368.Ames_Sheldon What follows is a "near as" transcript of our conversation, not word for word but pretty close to it, with links to important mentions. Jenny: But now, here's Ames.  Hello there Ames, and welcome to the show, it's great to have you with us. Ames Sheldon - Historic fiction author Ames: Thank you. I am thrilled to be able to talk with you. Jenny: It's just a real pleasure. So tell us all. Was there a Once Upon a Time moment when you decided that fiction was writing was the thing that you had to do? And if so, was there a catalyst for it? Where it all began Ames: Yes, there was. It all started with the fact that I love to read. And when I was nine years old, I was reading Stuart Little by E.B. White. And I loved that book so much. I thought, I want to be a writer. So I proceeded to write a story, a short story, a long, short story, and I've continued writing stories and poems ever since I was nine. I wrote a couple of novels. Neither of them were published. I spent years trying to get one of them published, in and out. Out to publishers and editors and back with comments, rewritten and out again. I did that for quite a number of years. And then I stopped. Throughout my adult life, I've had jobs that involved writing but non-fiction writing. I was a newspaper reporter and academic writer, a grant writer for a university for the Minnesota Historical Society, for the Minneapolis Public Library. How non-fiction helped fiction Not all of the same time, but one after another. And I thought this was a way I could keep my writing tools sharp in terms of being able to express my thoughts. This work helped my fiction in that I got used to getting feedback, getting criticism, revising and revising and revising. Jenny: So that first novel that you've mentioned. Did that ever evolve into the ones that you later published or was it something completely different? Ames: It was something completely different. And actually, it is the book that it is, I hope, going to be my third published novel. I had discovered an developmental editor along the way with my current novels and I worked with her to rewrite it. And I am currently querying agents and publishers about that novel. And I would be happy to tell you more about that novel maybe at the end or now what ever you wish. A thrilling new voice in fiction Jenny: I think at the end. We will concentrate on the ones that we have been publishing so far. That will be your work in progress I think. So that very first one that you managed to get published  - and wonderful that you stuck at it with such determination. It must have been thrilling that you won the Benjamin Franklin Award as the Best New Voice in Fiction for that first book, which was Eleanor's Wars. And I must when I first saw that title, Eleanor's Wars, automatically my mind jumped to the fact that this might have a connection with Eleanor Roosevelt, but in fact, it's a different Eleanor altogether, isn't it? Ames Sutton, Eleanor's Wars. Ames: That's correct. Yes, it is a different Eleanor.

Andrew Harvey is Founder Director of the Institute of Sacred Activism, an international organization focused on inviting concerned people to take up the challenge of our contemporary global crises by becoming inspired, effective, and practical agents of institutional and systemic change, in order to create peace and sustainability. Andrew was born in south India in 1952, where he lived until he was nine years old. By 1977, Harvey had become disillusioned with life at Oxford and returned to his native India, where a series of mystical experiences initiated his spiritual journey. Over the next thirty years he plunged into different mystical traditions to learn their secrets and practices. In 1978 he met a succession of Indian saints and sages and began his long study and practice of Hinduism. In 1983, in Ladakh, he met the great Tibetan adept, Thuksey Rinpoche, and undertook with him the Mahayana Buddhist Bodhisattva vows. Andrew's book about that experience, Journey in Ladakh, won the Christmas Humphries Award. In 1984, Andrew Harvey began a life-long exploration and explication of Rumi and Sufi mysticism in Paris with a group of French Sufis and under the guidance of Eva De Vitray-Meyerovitch, the magnificent translator of Rumi into French. Andrew has written three books on that subject: The Way of Passion, The Celebration of Rumiand Perfume of the Desert, an anthology of Sufi mysticism. With Llewellyn Baughn Lee, he founded the Sufi Conferences, which have played a prominent role in uniting Sufis of all persuasions during the past six years. He has close connections with great Sufi teachers in America, Africa, India and Pakistan, and a very clear, comprehensive grasp of the state of modern Sufism in both the west and the east. In 1990, he collaborated with Sogyal Rinpoche and Patrick Gaffney in the writing of The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying. In 1992, he met Father Bede Griffiths in his ashram in south India near where Andrew had been born. It was this meeting that helped him synthesize the whole of his mystical explorations and reconcile eastern with western mysticism. Andrew has since lived in London, Paris, New York, and San Francisco, and has continued to study a variety of religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity.

The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Robert Matzen, Author of Mission: Jimmy Stewart and the Fight for Europe. About Robert Matzen: Robert Matzen is the author of seven books, including the award-winning Errol & Olivia: Ego & Obsession in Golden Era Hollywood and the bestselling Fireball: Carole Lombard and the Mystery of Flight 3, which rose to #2 on the Amazon bestseller list for Biographies, won the 2015 ‘Biography of the Year' Benjamin Franklin Award, and earned praise from the Smithsonian Institution. Regularly interviewed by international press, including the New York Post, Hollywood Reporter, and BBC, Matzen's previous print work includes many articles about classic films, and the Greenwood Press reference volume, Carole Lombard: A Bio-Bibliography. His work as a filmmaker earned national awards and his feature documentary about George Washington, When the Forest Ran Red, is a genre classic. He has also written and directed several films for NASA. In March 1941, Jimmy Stewart, America's boy next door and recent Academy Award winner, left fame and fortune behind and joined the United States Army Air Corps to fulfill his family mission and serve his country. He rose from private to colonel and participated in 20 often-brutal World War II combat missions over Germany and France. In mere months the war took away his boyish looks as he faced near-death experiences and the loss of men under his command. The war finally won, he returned home with millions of other veterans to face an uncertain future, suffering what we now know as PTSD. Younger stars like Gregory Peck were now getting roles that might have been Stewart's, and he didn't know if he would ever work in Hollywood again. Then came It's a Wonderful Life.

Celebrate Moon Day with Award-Winning Illustrated Children’s Book (GRAND RAPIDS) Storytellers for centuries have told exciting and imaginative stories of the moon from ancient tales to space exploration and aliens attacking from the unknown, which is why people landing on the moon for the first time was such a monumental moment for all of mankind. Moon day is celebrated every year on July 20 to commemorate this exciting event. For many cultures the stars, moon and planets play an important role in their day-to-day lives. Thousands of Native American stories have been written about the moon, including many that cover relevant topics that exist today like bullying. Nearly 75 percent of U.S. students will eventually fall victim to bullying done by acquaintances, classmates, or even kids from across the country, but no matter where they are from they can seriously damage the victims’ self-confidence. An award-winning illustrated children’s storybook by Janet Heller, How the Moon Regained Her Shape (Sylvan Dell Publishing), is a tool that allows parents and educators to discuss bullying with children. Influenced by Native American legends, Heller’s story portrays a full moon who shrinks due to bullying. Through the book, bullied children learn how to rebuild their self-esteem. How the Moon Regained Its Shape is a favorite in the children’s fiction category, having recently won a Children’s Choices award for 2007 as well as the 2007 Benjamin Franklin Award in the category of Interior Design--Children's/Young Adult. Most recently, the book won a Gold Medal in the Moonbeam Children's Book Award competition for a Picture Book for 4- to 8-Year-Old Children. Janet Heller was born and raised in Milwaukee and currently teaches for the English and Women’s Studies Departments at Western Michigan University.
