Episode No. 704 features artist Wafaa Bilal. The MCA Chicago is presenting "Wafaa Bilal: Indulge Me," the first major survey of Bilal's work. Across his genres-busting career, the Iraqi-American Bilal has made performances, sculptures and related digital presentations that have interrogated the United States' relationship with and conduct within Iraq, the Middle East, and broader geopolitics. Bilal's work also investigates the notion of cultural cannibalism, the ways in which the culture of one people may be used, disassembled, and consumed by another. "Indulge Me" was curated by Bana Kattan, and is on view in Chicago through October 19. An invaluable catalogue was published by the MCA. Amazon and Bookshop offer it for $20-32. Bilal's work is in the collections of museums as unalike as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art Qatar. His work has been included in exhibitions at the Sharjah Art Foundation, Sharjah UAE; the Art Gallery at NYU Abu Dhabi; and the 32015 Venice Biennale. Instagram: Wafaa Bilal, Tyler Green.
At Arm, open source is the default approach, with proprietary software requiring justification, says Andrew Wafaa, fellow and senior director of software communities. Speaking at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe, Wafaa emphasized Arm's decade-long commitment to open source, highlighting its investment in key projects like the Linux kernel, GCC, and LLVM. This investment is strategic, ensuring strong support for Arm's architecture through vital tools and system software.Wafaa also challenged the hype around GPUs in AI, asserting that CPUs—especially those enhanced with Arm's Scalable Matrix Extension (SME2) and Scalable Vector Extension (SVE2)—are often more suitable for inference workloads. CPUs offer greater flexibility, and Arm's innovations aim to reduce dependency on expensive GPU fleets. On the AI framework front, Wafaa pointed to PyTorch as the emerging hub, likening its ecosystem-building potential to Kubernetes. As a PyTorch Foundation board member, he sees PyTorch becoming the central open source platform in AI development, with broad community and industry backing.Learn more from The New Stack about the latest insights about Arm: Edge Wars Heat Up as Arm Aims to Outflank Intel, Qualcomm Arm: See a Demo About Migrating a x86-Based App to ARM64Join our community of newsletter subscribers to stay on top of the news and at the top of your game.
This week. Dana's back? She and Duncan sit down with artist Wafaa Bilal and curator Bana Kattan to discuss Bilal's powerful and deeply personal mid-career retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Known for his provocative, often participatory works that grapple with war, trauma, displacement, and surveillance, Bilal has long made the body both a site of resistance and a vessel of memory. We talk through key moments in Bilal's practice—from early performance pieces like Domestic Tension to newer, installation-based works—and reflect on how his work has shifted, expanded, and endured over the past two decades. Kattan, who curated the exhibition, shares insights into the retrospective's structure and the challenges of contextualizing work that refuses easy categorization. While reminiscing, Duncan and Wafaa also talk through what it means to make art as a form of witnessing, how museums hold space for pain and politics, and why Bilal still believes in the power of beauty… (Spoiler: Duncan isn't sure, but Bana and Dana side with Wafaa.) A conversation on one of the most destructive elements in Arab culture: shame AKA 3eeb.
Twenty years ago 9/11 took place, leading the United States to announce its 'War on Terror' and involving Iraq in an ongoing conflict. This war was deemed as the first 'smartphone war' due to the introduction of the smartphone as an object of mass consumption in 2007. The widespread use of digital cameras enabled millions of users to capture the conflict from angles which had previously been out of sight. What formerly had been the domain of photojournalists and governmental agencies, became a limitless stream of images shared on the internet. This gave digital media a vital role in portraying the confrontation's countless layers. In this podcast, curator Mirjam Kooiman engages in a conversation with artists Alexandra Rose Howland (b. 1990, US/UK) and Wafaa Bilal (b. 1966, IQ/US). Through their distinctive artistic practices, they reflect on the role of remote-access technology, social media and online and offline participation in the Iraqi conflict from opposite sides of the spectrum. Today’s guest is Wafaa Arbash, the founder & CEO of WorkAround — a company helping refugees and displaced populations find sustainable income through data labeling for machine learning algorithms. However, Wafaa’s story goes much deeper than her role as a founder and CEO — she also is a great example of the power of resilience. She originally came to the United States from Syria in 2013, with a plan to stay 8 weeks. However, shortly after arrival, a crisis emerged in her home country which made it clear to her and her family that she would be much safer staying in the U.S. a little longer. The crisis in Syria continues and her original 8 week visit has turned into 7 years, where she’s now leveraging her talents to help displaced people that are still being affected by the unrest in her home country.Wafaa says that one of the keys to her success was: “You need to be proactive. You need to build a toolbox for yourself that allows you to be resilient”You can follow the podcast and host Chuck Swoboda on Twitter for further exploration and discussion on innovation. The episode is also available wherever else you listen to podcasts. Please consider supporting us here at The Muslim Vibe, just £10 per month would go such a long way: https://themuslimvibe.com/support -- This week our host Salim invites Dr Wafaa Eltantwy and Habeeb Akande to speak about sex and intimacy in Islam. They talk about the perception of sex in Muslim communities, looking at the existing taboo and the harm it perpetuates, and where it originated. Habeeb and Dr Wafaa both stress the importance of sex education, how it's lacking, and how important it is to address it. They highlight some of the things that we, as a community, are doing wrong, and how these contribute to a detrimental cycle that only hurts us in the long run. The conversation touches on Habeeb's book 'A Taste of Honey', the perceived separation between sensuality and spirituality, and the paramountcy of communication, opening the door on this all-too-important topic and taking those first steps towards shedding the taboo. Dr Wafaa is a gynaecologist, counsellor and therapist. She is an expert in psychosexual & relationship therapy, whilst also being a GMC licensed medical doctor with extensive clinical experience in sexual medicine. Habeeb Akande is an alumnus of Al Azhar University in Cairo. He is a British-born writer, sex educator and historian of Nigerian descent. She has been fighting HIV-AIDS around the world for 3 decades and believes that her patients and their supporters offer broader lessons: “People who are affected by cancer, for example, have learned a lot from the HIV movement.” Broader still, the public health efforts she champions are a model for democratic governance – egalitarian, activist, humane. With music from Stephanie Coleman.
Two doctors at the epicentre of the AIDS crisis - Glenda Gray and Wafaa El-Sadr - have worked tirelessly to care for those affected by the virus, to combat its spread, and to get the drugs to those who need it. Glenda Gray is a South African paediatrician and world-renowned scientist who currently directs the HIV Vaccine Trials study, which is the largest of its kind ever conducted in South Africa. Thanks in part to her work on mother-to-child transmission, the number of babies born with HIV has dropped dramatically from 600,000 a year to 150,000. Glenda herself grew up under Apartheid in a family of activists, and carried on her fight for social justice into medical school and beyond. Wafaa El-Sadr is director of ICAP based at Columbia University in New York. Born in Egypt to a family of physicians, Wafaa was working as a young doctor in Harlem, when the first AIDS cases began to appear in the 1980s. She didn't know she was witnessing the start of an epidemic that was to sweep across the globe. Wafaa helped develop a treatment programme that is now used as a model around the world.
